Such a cool environment - whether it's working on an assignment or catching up with friends over coffee (or beer/wine/whiskey) this is such a pleasing ambience. Hands down best coffee shop in Ottawa. Also the perfect location. So stoked on the find!!
I recently visited Ottawa and took the opportunity to visit the Ministry of Coffee on Elgin. Johnny, the manager, is personable and definitely is proud of his cafe. My first beverage was a black coffee. Honduras medium roast was good. Next day I had a delicious flat white. Finally, I had an espresso that was one of the best I've ever had. It is a wonderful cafe with a simple but very enjoyable coffee menu.
The staff is fantastic and the coffee is delightful!!!! I highly recommend checking this place out!
The best place to study! Especially yesterday by the window seat, soaking up the sun rays :)
That mushroom sandwich was the most delicious sandwich I've ever, ever had. I am in sandwich heaven. I don't ever want to eat again (unless it's here)! #MeltInMyMouth
Recommended by a friend. Great flat white (more like a machiato but I'm not complaining). Best was the carrot cake cookie. Think whoopie pie but with carrot cake inspired cookies and cream cheese frosting
Exceptional coffee, great beer, lovely staff and the cleanest ladies washrooms in Ottawa, maybe even Ontario? #itmatters
Thank goodness for the Ministry. Great flat white coffee served by a fellow Aussie. Streuth! It was a bloody ripper brew
Best Latés around!
And don't forget to order a Candied Bacon breakfast sandwich.
Good coffee. Good beer on tap (at the hintonburg location) and great snacks. Wandered in around 10pm and had a lovely chat with the staff and enjoyed some Karaage chicken. Exquisite
I will quote a friend of mine "these guys are the real deal". I live in the ByWard Market area of Ottawa and walk by a dozen coffee shops to these guys on Elgin St. I even pay a few cents more, but it is entirely worth it! The best in Ottawa.
best coffee in town. get my fix twice daily.
One of the Best Coffee Shops in Town! Every time I come downtown gotta stop for a Daily Cortado
Excellent Coffee Shop With A Great Atmosphere
The lattes and baked goods at the Ministry of Coffee are always great. This coffee shop normally rather busy as it is rather small inside but service is always fast and friendly.
The Only coffee shop I make sure to stop at when I'm downtown or on Wellington. These guys care for their coffee and know what they are doing.
All of the sandwiches are delicious; hard to beat the espresso. Intimate quarters make this feel like a public house without the alcohol. Very few interiors can match these; warm and welcoming.

This place was, without a doubt, worth the detour out of the touristy area for a ten minute walk. It is small and cozy and has the most interesting art in the walls. The guy working was friendly eccentric though it was busy and he was alone. Our coffees - americano and capuchino - were flavourful and delicious, and whatever the heck the lemon things were, you need to have one. It was like lemon meringue pie and some sort of cookie had love child. The brownie was good too but the lemon thing was Kevin spacey good. To sum up, a great find and fun detour.
I have never had a tea latte before, but I looked at their menu and saw an 'Almond Tea Latte', which sounded interesting, so I decided to give it a go. It tasted absolutely fantastic.
My only complaint was the price was $4.50 for the equivalent of a small cup from Tim Horton's.
I have also had their coffee though, and it was definitely very high quality. I would like to try their nitrous cold-brew coffee.
Coffee geek nirvana, both locations. Superb beans sourced from the best roasters across North America- Heart from Portland, Phil & Sebastian from Calgary, Social from Toronto, among others- made with care. I made it to the Elgin location three times this past 6-day visit to Ottawa and the Hintonburg (sp?) location once and on my next visit I'm going to make proximity to one of these a priority- it's that good. Ottawa needs twenty more places like Ministry of Coffee.
This review is for The Ministry of Coffee on Wellington (and will hopefully be transferred over when the Wellington page is created).
The Ministry of Coffee on Wellington is like a mullet: Business in the front and a party in the back. From the street, The Ministry of Coffee looks like any other coffee house located on Wellington, but if you go further inside, you'll find yourself at a comfortably dim bar area. Window seats take advantage of natural lighting and are a great spot to people watch, a long table down the middle gives off the feeling of eating as a community but not as overwhelming as Ikea, and seats closer to the bar are covered by both natural light and muted lighting. It was a peaceful spot to wind down after biking around the area in search for breakfast...

The Ministry of Coffee is the Best Indie Coffee shop I visited during my Weekend in Ottawa.
The interior is small and cozy. It can be quite difficult to get a seat especially if you come in group.
I tried Cappuccino, Cortado and Cold Brew which were all well made. Love the latte art.
The Ministry of Coffee is no hidden gem as this little coffee shop is just so busy. A lot of regulars come here for take out!
Worth visiting as a local or a tourist like me.
Nutella Croissant, Solid beautiful teapot. Title says it all. My newest favourite coffee/tea break spot.
Best coffee on Elgin.. Fantastic service, fresh coffee and the best croissants on Elgin by far. I always stop there for a coffee and a treat for my toddler.
Fantastic little place. Had a great cappuccino, delicious little English muffin sandwich (with real cheddar), and poppy seed muffin that was just the right sweetness (not a ton of sugar).
Amazing Coffee in Downtown Ottawa. The Ministry of Coffee is some of the best coffee you can find in Ottawa. The place is small, but the venue is warm and welcoming. The staff are very friendly and laid-back (And I think Australian)!
What's cool about the Ministry of Coffee is the fact that they rotate their brews with different blends every week. This is sure to spice things up for regulars that spend their weekends holed up in this quaint cafe.
The menu is interesting, especially any menu item with nutella in it. It sounds too sweet, but it's not; seriously, give it a try! It's sooooo smooth and creamy.
Joe Louis Heaven. This little gem is a hidden gem on Elgin Street. The coffee is excellent and the barista skill only adds to your coffee experience. Last week I bought my first bag of beans - Colombian from HEART roasters ... best morning coffee!
Today, I popped in and had their homemade Joe Louis - what decadence ... a little taste of chocolate heaven!
Must try. With Ottawa littered with terrible franchise coffee places, this location is a fresh of breath air... For my taste buds.
The barista clearly knew what he was talking about and answered questions clearly and concisely without sounding like a pretentious jerk. He was super friendly and very happy to have us there. He talked with others in the store and knew some by name! Clearly a fresh expression of what local businesses should be.
Everything is freshly made and they change up their coffee roast with a large variety of flavours each week making you want to come back.
Definitely a place to check out if you enjoy real coffee and not the unfiltered, mud-vomit "coffee" they serve at starbucks.
See you later Starbucks.. MinOfCoffee is in town.. First time going to the Ministry of Coffee, having walked by it a million times. The atmosphere was relaxed and unpretentious with great music playing in the background.
I ordered a 12oz Nutella Hot Chocolate to go and needles to say it was deliciousness in a paper cup. It was the perfect combination of sweet and creamy hazelnut-ty goodness without being overpowering.
Definitely a go to place if you are on Elgin looking for something caffeinated and can bear parting w/ Starbucks.
Nutella Hot Chocolate. :). Excellent little coffee shop on Elgin. The coffee is great, the Nutella Hot Chocolate to die for, delicious homemade goodies and the staff are really great. Check it out. :)
Aussie's invade. Finally a friendly, non-corporate coffee option on Elgin!
I just moved here from Toronto and was on the search for a great coffee shop. After testing several shops in Ottawa and leaving disappointed, I passed by The Ministry of Coffee, and thought 'what the hell'. I can honestly say I was blown away! The owners are so knowledgeable and passionate about coffee, but not pretentious about it. I tried the 'cortado' and felt as though I died and went to heaven. I also had a chocolate cookie that was stuffed with a Reeses pb cup. Again, died and went heaven...I am just so happy I found this place!!! Hands down the one and only place in Ottawa for coffee. Next time I shall try the Nutella latte, although I might just have another cortado. What the hell, maybe I'll have both! Well done Ministry of Coffee!!!
Amazing Lattes. Their Vanilla Latte is one of the best I have ever had. Flavorful without being too sweet. Atmosphere in the shop is great, friendly service. Highly recommend!
THE PLACE in Ottawa to get a coffee and maybe a snack. I always prefer to support local business and ministry of coffee has that "small" feel without being pretentious. Ideal decor, very tasty snacks and quick eats, good coffee and very nice service.
Awesome coffee.... Ministry of Coffee is a great addition to Elgin for all coffee lovers. In my experience, nowhere in Ottawa has come close to the coffee available in BC. These guys are using 49th Parallel beans, and they know how to pull an espresso. Try the cortado!
The one thing we've had a little bit of trouble finding in Ottawa is a good cup of coffee but we think the search is finally over. The Ministry of Coffee is a little café on Elgin and Somerset and we had a feeling it would be good just walking into the shop. Left to right: Sweet & Salty Dulce de Leche Pretzel Blondie ($2.75), Cappuccino ($3.50) We weren't disappointed. During our first visit, we ordered a Cappuccino ($3.50) and the Sweet & Salty Dulce de Leche Pretzel Blondie ($2.75). The espresso was on point and the pastry was everything its description promised it would be. This review wouldn't feel right if we didn't mention the Doughnut Waffle ($3.15) that we discovered during our next visit. It seemed like just a regular waffle but upon closer inspection, we noticed that it was covered in a melted butter brown sugar glaze and upon first bite, we realized that wasn't the only surprise--there are bacon bits inside too. Be still our beating hearts.
Found myself downtown today for a few things and decided to venture down Elgin Street to check out The Ministry of Coffee ( 279 Elgin Street, Ottawa ) which I had heard rave reviews about. Located just south of Somerset Street in the same building as the Fox & Feather pub, the Ministry of Coffee is a small coffee shop with decent amount of seating in the front and a small counter in the back serving all types of coffee. You want an Americano? they have that, you want a cappuccino? They have that. Want a boring old black coffee? They have that too. I visited shortly after 12 Noon to a couple of tables enjoying their coffee and one person being served at the counter. I normally do not like anything extravagant coffee wise. So no Americappucino stirred over flame with hot or cool whip drizzled in some chemical chocolate for me thank you very much. Just simple coffee will do. I was next and placed my order. The Order : 1 Medium black coffee. The guy behind the counter looked at me qui

"Quality driven. Expertly crafted." I have another coffee shop to add to my list of top shops in Ottawa. The Ministry of Coffee opened June 8 at 279 Elgin Street, just south of Somerset and across the street from Boko Bakery. They are in the spot once occupied by Hava Java, who held court here since 1992. One of the co-owners, Fadi Karam, was part of the start-up team that brought Illume Espresso Bar to Wellington Street near Island Park last December. Those early visits and conversations gave me a sense that Fadi has coffee passion as well as a depth of coffee knowledge. I credit him and opening day barista, Amy, for giving me a big wow first impression . Although his time with the Illume team was short, I was pretty pleased to hear he surfaced again with another opportunity to bring good coffee to java fans in Ottawa. For this recent venture, Fadi has teamed with Alex Dhavernas. It was Alex who was in the store today to show off his talents. Their bean for the espresso drinks is fro
