Review The Belmont - Ottawa

Just enjoyed their vegetarian dinner for two and was absolutely blown away by not only the food but the drinks and the service! Carney, our server, made sure we were taken care of, was super funny and kind and as a fellow vegetarian really hyped the dishes for us. and they delivered! literally every dish was a hit. the braised tofu is maybe the best tofu I've ever had (I've had a lot of tofu!!). we will definitely be back!

Great restaurant for date night or a celebratory dinner. Not cheap but the food was delicious and well presented. Some really original dishes, too. The cocktails were also pretty good although mostly classics. Definitely recommend!

INCREDIBLE experience here. I went with a few friends and we were BLOWN away by the service and food. Every one of our meals was expertly crafted with very unique and delicious tastes. The prices are incredible for the fine-dining style dishes. Our server was fun and kind, and our food came out in very good time! Will definitely be coming back again soon đź’•

Ordered one of the Famous Trini Doubles and added slow roasted pork, and the half piri piri chicken with Potatoes and Seasonal veg. Half chicken is definitely plenty for two people! Also really nice that they have a small menu. This is one that we'll recommend for sure.

Last night my wife and I shared the dinner for two for take out. It did not disappoint. All dishes travelled well and everything was as it should be once we got home (I know I've been concerned about how a meal will travel and hold up for take out when it isn't pizza or Chinese food). All of the flavors were just so balanced and well thought out. I feel grateful to have The Belmont so close to my home (I am new to Old Ottawa South). Thank you for an awesome first meal! We will absolutely be back (hopefully IN your restaurant!)

Only great things to say about the team at The Belmont and what they serve! The coziest and coolest atmosphere, tasty cocktails and a creative menu that never disappoints. Good vibes all round. The trini doubles are a MUST!!

Very unsuspecting high level restaurant. Went here before a show at the Mayfair and was extremely surprised by the quality of food. Tried the Belmont on a recommendation so had no idea what to expect. Don’t go here expecting to get stuffed but if you want unique flavors to share with your friends or SO come here. Really cute date spot. Can’t wait to come back.

Good potential. Great atmosphere, food was just ok. My steak tartare was so so, brussel sprouts were good and the gatrique on the bottom of my plate of my brownie desert tasted like pure vinegar. Glad I tired it but would not go back.

Visiting from Chicago for Ottawa family Christmas. At AirB&B nearby. Friday night, flight fatique, hungry. Wife, son and I Uber over. No reservations. Found us a table. Wonderful chef prepared casual dining. Casual, cheerful atmosphere, great price. Worth going to Ottawa just to relax over fine, fun food and be treated by friendly, professional staff. Meet he chef / owner. Great guy.

What A Night! Sat at the bar with my friend and had the most amazing experience. Atmosphere was infectious and the food was to die for. Started with Dumplings which were incredible, steak tartare was hands down the best in the city. Do not miss the brussells sprouts and the cauliflower smothered in hollandaise. Finished off the night with both desserts (brownie & brule) Delicious and inventive. Our new go to!

Had an amazing time. Great atmosphere, and every plate we had was on point. Decent cocktails, good (incredibly affordable) wine, and top notch service. Definitely worth the trip down bank! Will be back for sure

Thank you for arranging a card waiting on the table for my girlfriend's graduation! Lovely mocktails and the food was still as great as when it opened (if not even better).

Excellent food (quality ingredients) and exceptional service. I loved the repurposed vintage cups and dinnerware as well as the cloth napkins for less waste. Cool decor ďż˝

That was probably the best brunch I've had in Ottawa. Good job cooks!

Had our first experience at the Belmont last night and were very impressed. Cocktails were excellent and So was Sam's service. Were thrilled to try the doubles and they were as good as they look online. Lots of gorgeous veggie options, cute decor and comfy resto. Xo

In short: an awkward dining experience.

A member of my party had made a reservation three weeks earlier for four. We were there celebrating a birthday of which the restaurant was aware. My wife and I entered the restaurant on-time and stated that we had a 5:45pm reservation for four under the name of my friend. The restaurant was not busy, there was one other table occupied. The server that greeted us did not check any kind of reservation book and told us to sit anywhere with two chairs. We said that it was actually a reservation for four and the server promptly guided us to a table with four chairs. Not five minutes after (still on-time), the other two people in our party arrived and they too stated that they had a reservation under the same name. Again, the server did not check any reservation book and somehow did not clue in that they were part of our party. Unprofessional, disorganized staff was the first impression. Unfortunately, the first impression held up for the rest of the evening.

We started with a 2-meat, 3-cheese charcuterie board. It was presented beautifully with salami, capocollo, aged cheddar, blue cheese, and brie. After we had finished that, the server didn’t come back for ages. After waiting too long, we finally made our entrée orders. We ordered an elk salad dish, an order of jerk chicken, and two orders of chipotle lime pork, in addition to some beef and cabbage dumplings. After we placed our order, the server explained that the restaurant does not try to have a table’s food come out at the same time, and that food comes out as it’s ready. We were fine with that idea. One entrée came out very quickly; however, the other three came out about 45 minutes later. No matter the philosophy on how a restaurant is run, that is way too long for one to wait for food after another has already been served. We noticed that other guests who arrived after us were being served before us. No acknowledgement or apologies for this, by the way. What is worse is that the two people that were served last had to speed eat so that we could make our movie at 7:30. So they could not even take their time to savour and enjoy the food.

In the end, Belmont ultimately disappointed and ruined the birthday party we had planned. We arrived at 5:40 and didn’t leave until 7:20pm. One hour and forty minutes. We didn’t make it to our movie and had to get our tickets exchanged for an 11:00pm show.

As for the food, my friends enjoyed the chicken and por. I had the elk. The elk was cooked beautifully, nice and tender, not gamey at all, but the rest of the dish—basically a cabbage salad—was absolutely disgusting. It was doused in this awful, vinegary dressing that made me pucker up like a character on a sour candy wrapper. I ended up eating it because I was hungry—anything is palatable when you’re hungry enough, and we had a movie to make—but any other night I would have sent it back. The dumplings were quite ordinary, and I’ve certainly had better, more tasty dumplings at home. And for $12 you only get six dumplings
.

Now, I realize I am nitpicking here, but when I’m spending $45 per head on food (alcohol not included), I expect service excellence. The Belmont did not deliver the service expected at that price point. I also feel like there is a tension in the atmosphere at The Belmont. The aesthetics, rustic décor, and level of service suggest casual dining, but the restaurant name and pricing suggest finer dining. It can’t decide what it wants to be. Whatever it is, it’s not working for me, and I’m never going back.

If you’re looking for a casual dining spot, go to Kettleman’s Bagels, if you’re looking for finer dining, go to The Keg. Those restaurants never disappoint.

We went for the dim sumdays (1/2 price dim sum on Sunday) and it was delicious. Food was ordered quickly and accurately by our server. Everything was spot on and we felt that we would have gladly paid full price for the dim sum on a regular day. Not the cheapest place but I find it easier to spend on great food. Not very big inside but it has a sit up bar and I like smaller places for the atmosphere. Call ahead for large group.

We will be returning!

The service was great. The small plates were nicely executed but all seemed to be on the acidic side. As a collection of small plates to share it was hard to find things on the menu that went together.

I came here for drinks with friends one evening. The atmosphere was really good and the beer selection wasn't large but they had very good beer. Definetly would recommend for a date night place.

Great cocktails and great food. The signature dish is the chicken skins and they were amazing. We also had the ravioli and the corn on the cob with green onion and cilantro. All were very very tasty. Some may feel the salt needs to be reduced a bit. It was a Sunday night and many things were no longer available. Ambience very nice.

First off, the atmosphere and drinks are great. However, it felt like the menu was conceived primarily to be avant-garde rather than delicious. I understand the need to push the customer's palate but there were definitive flaws in the two dishes I ordered (turnips and quail). The ravioli were pretty good.

Great spot for any occasion!. This restaurant is an awesome venue for almost any occasion - catching up with friends, first date, birthday gatherings, etc. Highly recommend the funky and eclectic atmosphere and menu. Great addition to the neighbourhood and a refreshing break for the franchise-y restaurants found down the street at Landsdowne.

Great drinks. Terrible food.. Loved the drinks. Although quite limited in choice. The steak was nice however the pairing with a funny tasting quail egg and kimchi was odd and off putting. The squid was inedible. Chewy and tasteless. The blooming onion was quite good. The deep fried chicken skin was sooooo salty it was also inedible. Very disappointing. And the topper was watching the waitress take a sip of wine from a glass before she gave it to a customer. Wow! So sad because the neighbourhood needs a fun funky place like this.

Great addition to the Ottawa restaurant scene!!. Checked out Belmont tonight and wow.... it was great. Great cocktails and amazing small plate dining. The Roasted Cauliflower with hollandaise and truffle oil was insanely good!! The Fried Chicken Skin was also great although eating it made you feel like you could have a coronary anytime.... but in a great way!! The Beef Tataki was also incredible. Some of the best small plates dining I have had in Ottawa.

Excellent small plate menu. I like how they integrate big flavour with texture. We showed up at 8pm and there were a lot of people and the vibe was really cool. I ended up leaving at 1am and that rarely happens. Terrific drinks and good music kept us there. This is an excellent addition to Ottawa.

Fabulous vibe.... A perfect local bar/restaurant with a great underground vibe. The earthy, homey, rustic/cozy decor makes you feel like you are in a different city. Sitting at the bar is fun, intimate, and you never know who you will meet. So cool to chill with locals in the area and with the cool bartenders and owners.
The dishes are completely different and so interesting! You must try the sweet potatoe pot stickers dumplings, and the foie on cinnamon raison bread. Yup, sounds weird...it's absolutely decadently amazing!!
Bonne Vivante
Great time!. A really FUN restaurant; amazing ambiance and service; inventive tasty cuisine; superb cocktails. GO NOW!!!

Inside Belmont Tucked away in a one-storey building along Bank Street in Old Ottawa South is the city’s newest entry onto the dining scene: Belmont Snack & Liquor . Once the home of Carmen’s Veranda (1169 Bank St.), Belmont threw its doors open to the public this past Wednesday evening after a soft opening for family and friends over the weekend. Having snagged an invite, a good friend urged me to join him for dinner last Saturday. Needless to say, I did not need any convincing as I love checking out new restaurants. Sadly for Don, he was still sick, but encouraged me to take a break and have some fun. I have such an understanding husband! Attending soft openings are always interesting. Staff are seeking input from the diners. Compliments, suggestions and complaints are usually passed on to the chef and crew. The menu is still in need of tweaking and kinks in the service are being ironed out.
