Review Brothers Beer Bistro - Ottawa

Laura F
Great food and a great beer selection. I got the gnocchi and my partner got the bratwurst which were both fantastic. Our waitress was pleasant. However I found the beers to be a little too pricey.

First time here and one of the locals recommended this place to me. It was an excellent suggestion. The menu isn't huge but has enough variety to please just about any taste. The portions are not huge in size but they easily make up for that by being huge in taste. I asked what they recommend and ended up doing the Duck and a Pancake, an amazing cider by Collective Arts called Floating in the Void and the Figgy Pudding. Each item was bold in it's tastes and delighted the tongue with the variety of flavor it offered. I smelled some of the other dished that came out from the kitchen as they passed my table and it was amazing. The staff was friendly and amazing just like the food. I will certainly come back here next time I'm in town.

They served only small plates on Sunday and Monday nights. Our favorite was the the Smoked duck breast. It was nicely presented, good portion, flavorful, and the fatty layer not too thick. The beer expert of our party claimed that their IPA was the best he ever had and he had travelled the world and tasted countless beer.
Vic & Oli's Mom
Perfect patio that captures the Markets late afternoon sun. Great selection of drinks and as always with Chef Mitton, the food choices on the menu were amazing and hard to pick just a few. Service was great, fast and friendly and staff suggestions were spot on for our tastes once we gave a little overview of us (we like everything and all with no omitions the stranger the better). Recommendations: duck and asparagus, looks simple but the flavor is so rich, corny but so true. The duck wings, a Chef Mitton signature from a past life, always perfect and the snitzel and tongue in toast - no way to describe it, amazing, you have to order it, melt in your mouth.

Do you like craft beer? Sours? Triples? Saisons? Casks? They got it all! Varieties you have never heard of and all so different. Had a flight of 6 amazing and different beers. The food on Sunday/Monday is $12 small plates for sampling. The are a little smaller than a full meal, so you might need one of our own and one to share. The food was good. Have the fish tacos! Edit Apr 15 - Still amazing beers, but I have been back twice in the last week and the food was underwhelming. Had the Gnocchi with braised rabbit and had to try and find the rabbit, there was so little. Second meal was the Grilly Philly Cheesteak sandwich and found it was dry and not very flavourful.
RALF HUGGER
Great place for beer and wonderful food. Some of the best beers in the world on tap and in the fridge! The staff is highly efficient and friendly! Love this place. Must visit in Ottawa!!!
James Irvine
Excellent place. Great atmosphere, food and rotating taps. Customer service is perfect.
Brittany Pollock
Amazing beer selection. Charcuterie platter is out of this world. Staff is great and knowledgable, a wealth of facts about the products!

Nice little foodie spot. I tried the rabbit quesadilla, duck wings, pork belly, and ox tongue on cheese toast. All were very good; the ox tongue was exceptional. I got the fig cake for dessert - great flavor but rather dry. I will strongly consider coming back. Probably not really a 5, but it was the best meal I had on this visit to ottawa, so I will round up.

The beer selection is peculiar, not your run of the mill beer. Most beer here is only available here. The Mitt Nuggets (named after one of the chefs) are rabbit meat served in a duck sauce: these were fantastic. I have gone back but it won’t be go-to place for me.

The food is fantastic. We were a large crowd and tried just about everything on the menu. No complaints there!
However, the bar service is horrendous! We waited 35 minutes for a second round of drinks at 6:00pm and the restaurant wasn't even full. Come on, it's Friday night, we wanna a few drinks, not get cranky with the wait staff. The tables all around us also waited, and the staff kept apologizing for the delay. At one point, 20 minutes into our wait, the bartender left the bar unattended, brought drinks to a table and then proceeded to have a chat with the group for over 5 minutes.
I'm no expert on running a restaurant, but I love going to them a lot, trying new ones, and recommending great ones to my friends. And if you have "Beer" in the name of your restaurant, you may want to give us patrons a chance to actually try your "beer".
There are a lot of restaurants to choose from in The Market. I might have to give this one a miss next time I'm out for a quick meal and a few drinks.

We didn't plan this visit but aren't I happy I found this place. The employees are very nice and also helpful when making decisions for beers and cheeses. The beers we had were absolutely amazing! Very different in taste and exactly what we needed. The cheese platter was also perfect. The environment is very nice, simple, elegant and modern. I will definitely go back

Tried Brothers as the rating was good and posted menus were interesting. Asked to sit at the patio, the server said he wasn't sure what the sun was doing, nor did he take interest in checking. We passed several packed patios coming here and several after some that we enjoyed later. Service turned out to be non-existent, had to call a waiter to get a drink. Never did get a second. Menu only had 6 entries so had the hand cut Fries, they were okay, bit soggy and the Battered Pickled Things. They were not great. The charcuterie plates didn't appear to have much on them and are pricey. Waiter turned out to be disinterested in providing service and not friendly at all. Won't be going back.

Got the megatron board. It was amazing. It defeated two of us and we called in reinforcements. Service was generally good, nice atmosphere. Interesting beers on the hoppy side.

Loooove Brother's. The beer selections is awesome. The menu is creative and always changing. Service is great and prompt. And it's a really cute place. Probably my favorite place in the Market !

One of my favourite places to grab a pint in the city. Good mix of rotating taps and old favorites. And the bottle list is always interesting. The food is upscale gastro, always something fancy and delicious. Staff is great, engaged and knowledgeable.

I've had lunch here a few times and got steak tartare each time and it's always been good. Although the last time I went it was a little bit less flavourful. I had a bite of my friend's scallop when we went together, and that tasted pretty good as well. The staff is always friendly, service is decent and I like the atmosphere and decor. Will defnitely return again.

Pricey and pretentious. We started with a three cheese appetizer. I was surprised at the small portions for $17. They suggested beer pairing with the triple A sirloin. I am a traditionallist and stuck with a $12 Cabernet Sauvignon, I guess that's the going price these days. If they would have had tenderloin/filet mignon, I would have jumped on it. The offering was a good portion, but not of melt in your mouth category. The beer based options seemed interesting, but my heart was set on a good steak, and there was only the one option. The burgers were around $20. It is not what I was expecting.

Brother's Beer Bistro is quite a nice place for a drink with friends. But I was just a little disappointed at the beer selection. Maybe I was expecting a more beer selection from the local breweries. Most of the beers on draft are mainly from the Bigger local breweries instead of those producing small batches.

There are only 2 choice of flights available: I wish they let us pick our own Mix and Match 6 taster. $16 for a Flight of 6 Beers though each sample was quite sizable. I love Dominion City Brewing Earl Grey Marmalade Saison which was included in on my flight!

The bottle list though quite extensive with choices from Belgium, USA and Ontario.

Service was excellent.
Sharon.rundle92
Good horrible service worse. After noting one of our party was a vegetarian they brought bacon pizza

My steak was to be well done and it came bloody waited almost an hour for our food service horrible

Worst dining experience ever
Mr.Portly
Expensive and Worth Visiting!. The beer selection is phenomenal and the staff are friendly and knowledgeable with good memories as they remembered us from our previous visits! The food we have had was wonderful and I really appreciate the fact that they put a lot of thought and effort into their vegetarian options! I wish more restaurants would see vegetarians as valued demographic and vegetarian food as a cuisine. We will be going back very soon!

Tough Decision, but I went down....Good food, poor draft list. So, i had a hard time chosing positive or negative..I went negative because this is a beer bistro.

Let me start by saying, great food. For a pub, its great. I'll leave it at that.

The beer, poor. Any play that serves multiple Mill street brewery is a fake brew pub. Get some local Ontario Microbrews. You are in otatwa, no Beyond the Pale? All you see is Beau's Lugtread, which isn't a beer you want at a place like this.

The selection of taps is so pour (spelling pun intended). Look at places in Toronto like Volo, like Bar Hop...why can't we have this? If you want real microbrews and a good selection, go to the Arrow and Loon.

But like i said, they have some good, but really overpriced bottles and good food, but taps are very poor.
SAAD
Nicest discovery in Ottawa so far!. I have been there 3 times the last few weeks, with coworkers after work and once with the whole family for dinner. Appetizers and full course meals are exceptionally good and original, no exception. Will definitely go back!

Parents of Nate from Philly. In August, we visited Brother's Bistro on the advice of our son, who is an award-winning home brewer. In his opinion, and now ours, it was the best place to eat and drink beer/ale in Ottawa. We liked it so much that we ate there twice during our week's stay. The ales were terrific, as was the food, and we were most impressed that the chef put as much care into the vegetables as into each main course. The dishes that really stood out were the steel head trout and the quail. The wait staff for both of our visits was efficient and friendly and the food was served promptly and perfectly cooked. I would be thrilled if the chef would send me the recipe for the edamame/pea salad with lemon, ricotta and tarragon. Wish we lived closer to Ottawa!
Rae
Their charcuterie boards are amazing and the staff is super knowledgable about all the beers they serve.

So good!. 1) Atmosphere/Decor was great
2) Server was friendly and knowledgeable
3) Beer selection is impressive
4) Food was delicious
a) I could drink the red curry coconut milk broth that came with the mussels
b) the creme brule was also delicious

I would definitely recommend this place for a large party or a date. They have a nice patio that faces George Street as well. I can't wait to go back.

Edit: I've been back many times and every time it's gotten even better than before.

Just wow. Let's start off by saying the best craft beer list in the city it is easy to get lost in the beer list but ask they will answer your questions. now the good part the food for the beef tartar to the fries they never sever you something they would not eat themselves. great food every time you go

Best gastro experience in a long time. I can't say enough, you have to try this bistro. the food was amazing! I ran home to write this review. Reasonable prices. Beer pairings were great. Fine dining in a casual atmosphere, love love love. Michael, our server, was so knowledgeable about the food and beers. Thanks for making my son's birthday so delic!

Pretty good. Went last night and it was completely dead, so the service was very good! Staff were friendly and knowledgable. Food was "ok". Bread plate was nice. Carpaccio was generous but kinda bland. My friend had the arancini, which were good, albeit a tad too crispy. Steak Frites was average. Beer was tasty, and there is a huge selection here.

Will return, but unfortunately did not meet my high (based on previous reviews) expectations.
Doctorole
Small portions for the meat & cheese platter. Large selection of beers but the decor and vibe is dull. Won't be going back but worth a look for the variety of beers.

Went to Brothers Beer Bistro with a friend after work. Definitely a hipster place. The atmosphere was pleasant. The waitress was friendly. We enjoyed the mason jars as the water cups. The food impressed us! We had the charcuterie and cheese platter, fries and the wedge salad. Everything was exceptionally tasty. The homemade confit was delicious. Definitely would return!
F
Excellent quality food. The staffer are very professional and kind. Good ambiance for a good price. This is a very good restaurant!
Brenda
Impressed by the service and product knowledge of the waiter! The meat and cheese plate was a disappointment. The appetizer should include a magnifying glass, as to see the miniature portion size.

Love this place!. Went to Brothers Beer Bistro last week for the first time to celebrate my birthday. I called ahead to reserve and they set up a nice table for 8 by the window. It's charming and classy - similar in feel to the gastro pubs in Hitonburg, so it’s nice to be able to have a different pub experience in the market! The food was incredible, water glasses were never dry and they had some great wines available for my non-beer fan friends. Did I mentioned the beer was fantastic!! Everyone was pleased and I'll definitely be going back!
Yasmine
Impressive Lunch. Our office goes to Brothers about once a week to treat ourselves for lunch and we absolutely love it. The attention to detail in their presentation and flavour combinations are incredible, and not to mention everything is $13! Quick and friendly service, cozy booths, and delicious food!!! You have to check it out if you haven’t been for lunch.
Thank you,
Jessica McNeil
Exceptional Food, Service, and Beer Selection!. I have been to Brothers countless times and I can honestly say it never disappoints! Their staff is awesome - very attentive and impressively knowledgeable of their long list of brews, don't hesitate to ask for a recommendation or try one of their beer flights. It is a "Gastro Pub" style restaurant so the menu is a little small, but they offer a great variety to please anyone. And the food is absolutely delicious (the tuna tartare is my favorite)! If you are a craft beer lover like me, then you have to check this place out, they have an incredible beer selection and lots of local brews on tap!

Great service, fantastic food, and awesome beer list - AND the best afternoon sun in the market!
Toufic
Steak and fries is excellent.
Great service by Mike.
Excellent selection of drinks

Recommended
James
Too loud! Nice place, but they must invest I'm acoustic dampening...

Went for lunch on a weekday. I expected it to be busy but it wasn't. I had the burger, which would have been awesome if the pattie hadn't been overcooked. The fries were good.
Kirsten Erickson
Absolutely amazon! Food was excellent (get the shrimp starter), the beer selection was even better and the atmosphere was great. Definitely will be returning eager to try different beer and different menu items!
Jaykay
Excellent selection of beers. The waitress was knowledgeable and made good recommendations.

The food was good, but overpriced. Steak frites at $25... Just too much. $18 or $20 would be reasonable. To be brutally honest, part of it is that I just don't want to pay mid $20 range for food that I eat with beer. I fully approve of a high end beer bistro, but this is pushing it. I'll pay 16 or 17 dollars for a burger, but if I am being charged $25 plus for my food, I can think of plenty of excellent restaurants in Ottawa that will deliver a truly upscale dining experience.

If the ingredients are too expensive, do something simpler.

Close, but a miss.

Great beer selection. Great service. Was there last night. Belly and shrimp was amazing. Fries were great but steak was avg. My wife liked the trout and organic greens and we both loved our desserts. Will be back for sure : )
Jennyran
Top notch stuff!. Went with a friend to sample the beer flights and ended up staying three hours! Excellent service, exactly what I had hoped. Knowledgeable but not pushy. Tried several of the charcuterie and cheese options, and all came beautifully prepared if sized small for the price (we are talking about simple food here, minus the duck). Delicious, and well-recommended I might add. Late night pate was a huge portion! Caesar was worchestershire heavy, but hey I like it like that! This is a place to go for a great date or to catch up with an old friend. Spend some time. Late night pate was a huge portion!
Manu
Our fav new place in the market. Great beer selection, amazing service and just all around great food. We LOVE Brothers :)
Shawn
Small Portions. Went for a drink and apps with a group of 4. We shared the asparagus salad, shrimp/pork belly and beef tartare. Their specialty is beer, so they had a good selection. No cask when I went. Good location. Food was good and well displayed. Cashew butter amazing. Portions to price though very small. The small portions is what left a lasting impression. Would only go back for a drink.

Must try the shrimp and belly appetizer. Very well thought-out menu, will definitely come back. My friend and I went for late night apps and had the mussels and chips, shrimp and belly as well as the beet salad. Everything about our dishes were perfect, I wanted more.

Whereas the food is impeccable, the service was pretentious. The server floated around in an intrusive manner and talked down to us when we asked questions about the apps. At the end of the meal, he made it painfully quiet during the payment process so I attempted to make conversation. He told us that he'd only been working there for 2 months and I can only hope he smartens up. The hostess and bussers were very friendly however.

Great food. Ate at Brothers on Saturday night with my girlfriends. We ordered drinks and shared a cheese plate (delicious). I ordered the Lemon Spaetzle as my main and it was amazing; I would highly recommend it! We split the Chocolate Mint Bread Pudding and Pavlova plates for dessert. Both were good, but not great. I would definitely eat there again, but just stick with the cheese and main plate! The restaurant has a great vibe (it is a tad bit loud, but it didn't bother me) and the waiters were very attentive with refilling our drinks.
Georges
Impeccable. We had the 3 meat and cheese. Wonderful presentation and a taste that made me do the "A-OK" hand symbol while turning my head slightly and say "hmm". Service was great, ambiance was to my liking and waiters took the time to describe to us anything we had questions about since it was our first time. Cured Sausage, Duck Speck and Grey Owl cheese. All excellent, along with each and every little topping it was bundled with.
Kboczar
Very poor service. Ate here with a larger group recently. While the food and beer were great, I was greatly disappointed by the service. The server was aloof and bordering on rude the whole evening. I was really looking forward to trying this place out--had the steak frites and a flight of beers which were fantastic; however the treatment from our waitress was just off-putting. Will certainly not be back anytime soon.
BigW
Excellent venue for small or larger groups. We had a table of 8, and service was quite good. No long waits for anything, and the wait staff was knowledgable about the different beers they had. The food was top notch, although it would have been nice to have the bread on the table when the drink orders were being served. All in all a very good experience and absolutely a return visit will happen.
Picky Shrew
Food was good, beer was very good. Service could be much improved on, as we had to wait a long time for food. I got the soup & appetizer at the same time! Training for staff & good flow between the kitchen and dinning room is necessary. Don't go if you have to leave by a certain time, you might looking again and again at your watch. A bit noisy. Will go back to try other beers.
Marc Charron
For those of you who enjoy authentic BBQ, this is the place to go. The brisket is amazing and the UBS are to die for.
Naddoushe
Great brunch. Went for a brunch there, the menu is not very varied but the food was great. Had the egg sandwich with home fries and a scone with some spreads. The scone was just amazing, should definitely try it. Will go back for sure.

Very good meals. Great service and food! Make a reservation - it fills up fast - and that speaks to the popularity!
Njam Njam
Great atmosphere and service. I would say beer selection is good but in my opinion is missing few staple beer brands. I didn't eat but did try Pavlova dessert and would not have it again. Quite difficult to eat and different from the menu description in my opinion. Overall a nice place to unwind or start the night with few drinks.

Lots of Beer, limited Menu. I went to have diner here the other day and was some what disappointed. They have an amazing collection of beers but I was surprised on the very limited menu. We only had about 5 entrees to choose from and not one really jumped out at me. They seemed very costly at 22-26 a plate. So we had a drink and app and went some where else. The overall layout and mood of the place was very nice and welcoming. May try it again but hope they adjust the menu.
Iluka
Good food, small portions. The food is always amazing and the beer pairings are a nice touch. I love how everything is either baked in beer, presented with porter, or steeping in stout. Those kinds of fun details make it an experience instead of just a meal.
I wish the portions were larger as I tend to leave wanting more, but the specials are a great deal and come with beer pairings.
Will revisit.
Hoping for a full day service too. No breaks between lunch and dinner and full service on Sundays.
Beer Lover
Food is always amazing. Great atmosphere and staff. I have to say that the beer choices can be pretty disappointing. A few great breweries in this province are are missed in the menu. No Great Lakes, Amsterdam, or even mill st. If you are going to have a beer bar it would be nice to see more craft support. Czechvar and Steigl on tap? Even Spearhead which technically isn't even a brewery is taking up precious tap space.
Heather MacDonald
Six of us tried this place tonight. The beer was fantastic and the appetizers were good - but the entrees were disappointing. Two of us ordered the steak frites and the steak was cold. They offered to reheat them and ten minutes later the steaks were warm and the plate and veggies super hot as the whole plate was just reheated. The porkchop was tasty but overcooked. Seafood stew was only ok. The burger was great as was the trout. So 4 out of 6 of us thought it was only ok or we're disappointed. For a shared app, two mains and a beer flight each, at 150$ a couple the food is just not up to expectations. And no discount or comp for either steak even though we didn't end up eating them.
ILikeFood
Disappointing Brunch. We went for dinner at Beer Brothers when it first opened and were pretty disappointed, but since they've been open for awhile now, and presumably ironed out any kinks, we decided to give their brunch a try.

Overall, it was a pretty disappointing experience.

I don't eat eggs, so I ordered home fries, greens and toast:
- home fries and home made ketchup were really good
- greens were just lettuce with a pretty underwhelming dressing, and not worth the $4
- toast was dry baguette slices. I asked for butter which never came
Overall, the home fries were good, but I could have done without everything else.

My partner ordered the eggs benny which came out cold. Considering there was only 1 other table, this was pretty unacceptable. The server offered to reheat the meal, not remake it, which would have overcooked the eggs, so he just ate his meal cold. The hollandaise was pretty mediocre, there were no extras on the benny like spinach, and the pork belly was just okay. It was also served in an awkward bowl. Plating it differently with a little salad or fruit on the plate would make it look more appealing. We were not offered any sort of discount either, and paid the full price for a sub-par cold meal.

Coffee costs $3 per cup, which is outrageous!

Overall, breakfast will cost you $35 for 2, which was absolutely not worth it. For that price I'd rather eat at Fraser or the Manx, where I know the food is always amazing and hot and they will insist on fixing any sort of problem you may have.

Love this place!. We were stuck on a Friday not wanting to make dinner at home and were looking for a restaurant last minute. My husband said he was in the mood for steak frites and racking my brain I remembered some some good reviews about Beer Brothers, so luckily we were able to get in. There is definitely a great buzz to this place, atmosphere is very upbeat and very inviting when you enter. The server was attentive and helpful. We started with a greatest hits, sampler of beers (and I am not a beer person at all but these were amazing! actually tasty beer!) The food was good not amazing, both having the steak frites which was definitely seasoned but missed something . That said, I can't wait to go back again because of the atmosphere, relaxed, fun but also the yummy comfort food they served.
Beerisgood
Went for lunch today at Brothers and tried the 6 tasters "flights of beer".
It was most excellent as was the burger.

Great Food Concoction. There last night for a late dinner with parliament workers and boy were we tantalized by the array of choices and better yet, the fact everything is cooked and or dabbled in beer, it makes the digestion even better. It seems like they have got the hand at concoction the concept of food which tastes good, falls good and sits good. All well for a great price.

Good eats and you do not feel as guilty nor bad for your late night 'cheat' snack.

Plus, you stomach will love you for it.

Cheers Brothers
MStri
Beer was great, service was amazing. But the food was very hit and miss. Half of my table of six was not happy with their order. I think a few kinks still need to be worked out, but great potential!
Jenny Green
Great burger, great fries. The malt aeoli is really good on burger (peppercorn mayo just so so)
Roll_dabonz
Great place!. Excellent menu. Beer selection is superb. Portions are generous so bring your appetite. Very good and friendly service. Definately going back again.
IAMIFUN
Not bad. Been here a couple times. nice atmosphere - very relaxed and good place to hang out with a group of friends. huge selection of beer. i particularly enjoy the flights.

one problem - wish they were open later.

My Kingdom for a Bun. My experience here was excellent with one important exception. The food was tasty, service was good and the beer was excellent. It would have been a nice dinner out except for one glaring problem. The cute artisanal bun could not stand up to the hefty, juicy burger I ordered. Within seconds of biting into the very tasty burger, my bun was a mushy, disintegrating mess that left me essentially eating a burger wrapped in wet dough. They could have wrapped the burger in kleenex and it would have been better than that bun.

It's been a few weeks, so hopefully they've addressed this.

Other than that, it was excellent.
Kat_p_stephens
Food was a major let down. I had been to Brothers once or twice to try the beer and some appetizers, and knew that I liked the space and the atmosphere, but was unsure about the food and the service.
When my sister said this was where she wanted to have her birthday dinner, I was totally excited to really try the food.
I was so disappointed. I had the trout, it was overcooked. The skin was really nice and crispy though. The vegetables ( carrots and parsnip) weren't peeled, and as a result were slightly bitter. The entire dish was underseasoned (and I'm not the type of person that puts salt on everything). I thought the Mad Tom compressed mushroom was aggressively bitter, but that is just my own personal taste.
The general consensus among our friends was really all over the place, some were very pleased and others also felt that it was a bit lackluster.
I will go back for drinks and charcuterie, but I wont be paying $24 for a dinner plate that will make me wish I were somewhere else.
Mountaingirl
Burger was great. Bun was wrong. It crumbled after the second bite. It needs to be more substantial. Great place for beer.
Steph
We loved it. Visiting from Toronto and are so glad we found this spot. Beer, food and service all fantastic.
MrNoNameBC
Food is... solid if not spectacular. Deserts are fantastic. But you go here for the beer. Microbrews and imports only. If you want a good beer, this is the place to go. Expand your taste buds beyond the usual mass produced beers and give this a try.

But bring your money... Some of the beers are not cheap (especially the stuff from BC/WA/OR... ouch!). But there is plenty of local stuff which is worth trying and isn't going to break the bank.
Vee
Ew.... Just go to Union and get a real education in food. :)
Connor Rielly
Great Experience. I went there with three friends because a coworker was leaving. It was a good atmosphere for small groups, the service was fast and very cheerful - and the beer was of course varied and excellent. Ask for La Trappe!
I also had the burger - flavourful but likely to fall apart, recommend eating with a knife and fork..
Eric Fortier
Good food and beer but a little on the pricey side...
Phil
Amazing chicken drumsticks! licked up every bit of the honey-based sauce. poutine with pork belly was medicare and Hawaiian pulled pork sandwich was only $6 but was a bit dry.

and, we ordered at 1:10 am on a Thursday night :-) beers are endless! music is at a great volume, lighting a bit bright

Tops for date night getaway!. With two young children at home my husband and I don't often have occasion to hit the town for dinner. So, when we do go out, we try to pick wisely. Before trying BBB, we scoured the local blogs and reviews to get the scoop on the newest spots around town. Brother's had garnered some great reviews. And, as the idea of a beer bistro seemed enticing, we decided to give it a try.
Impressive! The attention to detail is evident in this restaurant. Everything from the warm, genuine smile of the host, to the perfectly prepared, hot coffee to close out our evening was deliberate and thoughtfully presented. We ordered the pierogi as an app; the steak/frites and octopus as mains; the pineapple cake for dessert; and two, tall glasses of artisanal beer as refreshing accompaniment.
Simply put, the meal was delicious and, despite claims to the contrary, very affordable. Our entire meal rang in just shy of $100 and included complimentary homemade bread and spreads. For us, Brother’s Beer Bistro is a real gem in Ottawa’s burgeoning culinary landscape and we will be adding it to our list of date night getaways!

Good. Not great.. Went for lunch yesterday. It was okay. A single small room, done in dark colours. We sat at a big table with banquette seats.

Beer is in any food that can have beer added. Pricing was reasonable to high - normal Market rates. A rather small menu, which included some upper-crusty options, including beef tartare and a beef tongue sandwich. I got "a burger and a Beau's (beer)". The beer was considered the side dish; I could have ordered fries or salad instead. Salad was just a salad mix like I get at the grocery store. Burger was good, but very drippy, which is hard to eat in a fancier place, unlike Hintonburger or Five Guys, where it doesn't matter if you're messy. It was served on a pretzel bun, which was yummy but fell apart pretty quickly. I got a "deconstructed s'mores" dessert, which I would give a 7/10. Presentation was nice. Service from Nick was great. With lots of beers to choose from, he was patient and enthusiastic and able to answer a lot of questions on the food and the beer options.

Overall, I'd be willing to go back, but there are better options in the Market in terms of food. For about the same money, I'd go to Smoque Shack or Play first.
LibbyC
Popped in for some beers and snacks and was happily impressed. The Pierogies and Steak Tartare were tasty and a good size. Also got malt and hop flavoured butter with plenty of bread. Service was prompt and friendly, and sat at the bar watching it is very well run!

Relatives to great taste. Thanks Brothers for bringing a little class to the market in an environment that is welcoming!

hipster dufus, if you didn't have an overwhelming sense of self loathing you would know that the servers can tell you all you want to know about the beer you want to order. Descriptions are for rookies when the beer is categorized by "style" and although your cut off jean shorts and my cargo shorts can be categorized as shorts, they do vary in "taste". The service staff is more than willing to give you a sample of draught if you're unsure.

We (my girlfriend and I) had a relaxing evening taking a tour of beer styles and it's nice to know that people who own businesses are starting to understand that 14 taps of big brewery crap won't win you any brownie points with people looking to have something crafted as carefully as the food on offer.

The parings on the menu looked pretty good, although a few caught me by surprise; I'm glad using one beer as an ingredient doesn't automatically dictate that beer being the suggested paring. Well defined, the style of the menu fits the setting and really sets you up for trying something out of the box. The tartar was a good portion, served with fresh chips and an amazingly spicy Dijon. The aloi didn't stand out, but presentation of both the tartar and perogies was refined and fresh. I could eat an entire bowl of the sweet potato sauce on the perogies and the pork cheek was a delightful addition.

My advice, talk to your server, they know their stuff and can suggest something that will exceed your expectations... on a side note chocolate porter and cherry beer as a "black and tan" will knock the socks off anything most market venues have to offer for some after dinner delight.

Amazing sevice, great environment. I have been living in downtown ottawa for a few years and I have had a hard time finding a place that both my partner and I can go to and relax without completely busting the budget. We had been watching the construction of brothers patiently over the past month, hoping that it would be our new spot downtown. Brothers did not disappoint. The staff is very friendly and professional (yet not overbearing like they are at some restaurants), the food is amazing and the beer menu is extensive and exciting. If you like new things, try the banana bread beer. Definitely will be back over and over again. The waitress told us they will eventually have over 60 beers on their menu, giving us 60 reasons to go back. If you're tired of the commercial, over priced restaurants downtown, go to brothers. You'll never consider going anywhere else again

Beer you say!. Stopped in last night with another couple to try Ottawa's newest Bistro. Bread was great with a killer malt butter that should be patented. My perogies were very yummy with a rich sauce to die for and some pig cheek that put the dish over the top. Only three to a plate was a bit disappointing since the sauce was left to ones own device to get sopped up. My chicken and waffles were a bit underwhelming as well for $24. Only a small chicken breast with it's wingett detached making you think you actually got two pieces. The sauce on the dry waffles could have more sweetness to it or maybe a pat of that flavorful butter would be a nice touch. Seasoning levels need to be adjusted on this dish as well as portion size for the price. There was no real beer flavor to the dish that I could detect could be the point who knows. Steak and frites on the other hand was very tasty with the clod shoulder steak charred to perfection yielding to fresh cut fries nice to see a different cut of steak from the tough boring strip you see all to often. The ice cream to finish things off was a disaster weird crumbly texture lacking any creaminess or sweetness a lesson from Pascale is in order.

Brothers Beer Bistro HamburgersThis restaurant in Ottawa is a gold mine if you love beer and good american food. I probably had the best hamburger in Canada here and definitely I drunk the best beer in my USA-Canada trip.

The food. Oh my, the food. Chef Darren Flowers, who comes by way of Play Food & Wine, Luxe Bistro and Beckta, has quite obviously found a niche that he loves, because it truly comes through in his food. You won’t find Buffalo Chicken Wraps (which I shamefully admit that I love) or soggy french fries with a droopy, sad looking pickle at Brothers. What you will find, on the contrary, are artfully prepared takes on some classics.

Brother’s Beer Bistro attracted me initially after I saw a grilled octopus entrée on their online-menu. When I visited the place recently, however, I was disappointed to discover that the offering had been discontinued a few weeks earlier and I almost went elsewhere. I didn’t, as it happened, and, though the meal I ended up having wasn’t exactly spectacular, by any means, I still enjoyed a pretty nice evening…

Every item in the menu is cooked with beer or used beer in some form. Each dish can be paired with the suggested beer to balance the taste of the dish - same as wine pairing. You can also choose from a fine selection of draught and bottled beers to enjoy throughout the meal. Not to mention that some beers are gluten-free. The staffs are quite knowledgeable with the taste profile of each beer, so don't hesitate to ask the type of beer you desire. As my knowledge of beers is quite limited, it is interesting how the right choice of beer can contribute to the dish. First, the bread was served with two beer-infused butter. The malt but

Although I don’t frequent the market as much these days, this place is worth the trek. They have a beer-inspired menu with all beers organized by type. It’s a great place to take someone who doesn’t know much about beer because their knowledgeable staff and the menu itself provide a great learning environment.

Chef Darren Flowers cooks “Grain-to-Beer” at newly launched Brothers Beer Bistro (366 Dalhousie Street) in the ByWard Market, employing everything from malt to the beer it produces and even the spent grains. “There are only so many ways you can use beer in food,” explained Flowers. “We decided to draw on elements from the brewing process itself.”

Thankfully the food is fantastic, it has a great location in the market and I am a determined beer drinker.
