Review Aulde Dubliner & Pour House - Ottawa

Carl Cencig
I stopped here for a quick drink and bite to eat today. The service was fast and did a very good job as far as the Market goes. I ordered the summer sausage plate and it did not disappoint. Generous amount of diced and sauteed vegetables came with the plate. Good experience, would go back again.

Average food as pub foods, nothing special. But the ambiance is great, old style pub; very good for groups. If you don’t drink then not a special place for food only. Customer service was not good, but you have to pay 18% as tips.

Love the atmosphere, the staff, the waitress we had was amazing. Food is always great. One of my favorite places in the market to go. The entertainment was fantastic. My meal was the spicy chicken Curry and it was so tasty and not over the top spicy it was perfect.

Neat little pub in the heart of Byward Market Ottawa. We were seated quickly and given a great place on the patio, there are some cool patio tables on the 2nd floor too. Service was friendly and prompt, no complaints. Prices seemed fair for the area and representative of the food served. My partner loved the veggie burger and fries, I however found the wings really tough and overcooked, they were okay but I would not recommend. A huge pet peeve of mine at any restaurant is when the website menu does not match the restaurant menu. Here, some items online were not on the real menu. I get changes happen, but some folks pick your restaurant based on your menu online and for me, it's really bad practice not to keep that updated.

Nice spot for drinks. Ended up also ordering onion rings although we had just eaten but they looked so good!! Did not dissapoint. Service was really good too! I was a bit cold at some point and had a nice cup of tea. Place was really busy and noisy but it is what you can expect for a pub.

Beautiful place. It was walking distance from our hotel, so I can't say something about a parking, but it seems to me that parking is a trouble in this area. My husband had a short ribs- yammy!!! Best dish in our table of 6. I had a smoked duck- well done, but I didn't like the sous- not good choice for me. Our friends were happy with their dishes. We enjoyed our food, drinks, beautiful flowers, atmosphere, very nice weather and our community of course 😊. We had a very good time here. Thanks for helpful staff.

First time here with my friend. We love it. The place amazing and full of flowers 🌸, amazing service and great environment. A lot if choices for Irish food.

The waiter was cool and nice and I only had sweet potato fries and non-alcoholic Beck's. I'll probably review again later after a proper meal. Oh I forgot about the live music. I wish it wasn't so loud or that the equipment transmitted the sound better. I'm sure the musician was good but it was uncomfortable listening.

Great atmosphere, great server, big portion of fish and chips, all worth it. Amazing cool crowd Convenient location. Its all a winwin.

Just stopped in for a pint. Great decor! We sat upstairs on the patio. We had a great server who was very helpful and kind. We will be back...
Diane Payne
Had an early dinner here yesterday. Loved everything about our experience. Service was great, efficient and friendly. Food was very good, I had the salmon plate with rice, my husband had the jambalaya, spicy and delicious. Sat outside on the patio. Tables are close together but we were fine. Will be back!

Visited the Aulde Dubliner twice this week-end, that's how much we loved it! The staff was friendly, our server attentive and fun, the guinness and black velvets were great, their late night food is simply unbelievable. I know where I'm going for a pint next time I'm in Ottawa!
Devin MacDonald
Great place for a pint when in the Market area!! Service was great beer was cold. What else can you ask for !!
Alan Smith
It is always good to sit out in the patio to have a drink and a bit of eats

We ate there for the first time, this past Sunday (Jan. 28th)! We had a great server who was attentive, engaging and ensured that my off-the-beaten-path order was served to perfection! We will be back!

Went for St Paddy and enjoyed and pitcher and burger and great and friendly staff will come again!
Robin Robitaille
Food was good and came out quickly once we had ordered it but took forever for a server to come over initially. Then again to Even get our drink order. Probably won't return.
Ron Clement
The atmosphere and servers are fantastic. Give us excellent service The wings are to die for.
Jodi Morton-Parcey
Food was great! Service wasn’t the best. I would come back tho!
Danielle Pilon
Had the fish and chips there yesterday for lunch and they were good. Fish was a bit soggy but good none the less. Fried pickles were amazing and out waitress (Sasha) was very friendly and good fast service. Will go back again soon and next time I will try the Shepards Pie
Jeanine Noseworthy
We had the friendliest bartender which made our experience that much better. It was our 1st visit to Ottawa and we are planning on coming to Ottawa again and this pub is on our list of stops for sure!!
John Bridgeman
Absolutely loved the Bison Burger It was delicious Much more than I expected. The service and atmosphere were great Totally recommend it!!

Lots of beer on tap, great food & service in the heart of Byward Market

great food and service very crowded waiter was wonderful! the bartender needs to re read the ingredients in drinks,we watched him make our drinks wrong

Great atmosphere. Great service. Great food. I would definitely recommend it!

Try the fries with garlic and a pint of Kilkenny Red beer and you won't go wrong.

Great location, excellent patio and balconies. The cheese ball dip was cold and unpleasant.
Ashley Lynn Estabrooks

Very nice atmosphere. Food was OK, however we had the pasta. Probably should have keep to Shepards pie. Very friend staff.
Louise Donegani Constantineau
Lovely staff, nice atmosphere. Had fish and chips, very good. Will be going back. Thank you ladies for the good service...

Service was great and food was really good with one exception. Did not enjoy the sweet tomato sauce on the flatbread. The house cab Sauvignon was excellent.
Tony Kulbisky
Great food and atmosphere. Would highly recommend

Great place for a drink, especially on the patio. However, the food is disappointing. We ordered nachos and they were soggy. I don't know why a lot of restaurants put the salsa on top of the chip, followed by the cheese. Of course, they will get soggy! And my friend ordered tacos. They should be call leaky tacos! They were very messy.

Nice place for some good evening dinner and drinks. We went with a bunch of office colleagues and our server was quite nice and she did not shy away from offering her advice when asked. All the suggestions were outstanding - and we loved the evening. Would love to go back and dine again.
Michel
Very nice place and very nice reception by the receptionist and the waitress. I ordered a fish and chips and it was served hot and efficiently. But it was good but not as good has the one I had in Britain and Ireland sorry guys. Also ordered shepherd pie and serve hot very tasty.

Decent pub fare as well as a good selection of drinks. It's one of the first pubs that you see when you enter the market and has a pretty large patio space for the summer. The drinks are pricey, as any place in the market. It's not my first choice for drinks, but it's not terrible. The nachos here are quite good, but they don't top the nachos at Blue Cactus.
Smart Cookie
The Byward Market where this pub is located is buzzing with energy - especially when the sun is shining. They have a beautiful patio adorned with big hanging baskets of blooming flowers - which really puts you in a summer mood. Not only is this a great spot to sip a pint while people-watching, they have great wings! Try them with the Salt and Pepper dry rub, or if you like them saucy, the Guinness BBQ is quite nice.
Hang T
Their fish and chips is quite decent and so is the beer. The cocktails, not so much. This is a good place to start if you are bar hopping or if you are just having a chill night and only want to grab drinks with friends and head home early.
FoodAficionado
Typical pub food. I ordered the chicken fingers and fries... standard flavours, nothing special and the coleslaw clearly went bad. They were out of stock of a few beers which was unfortunate. Service was slow and unpleasant. Won't be back.

We decided to take a group of friends here today for lunch. Our server was blah. Walked away while we were still trying to order: funny because we joked about how she wasn't writing anything down and seemed stressed when we were asking for our 6th person to also order (since our server skipped her and didn't take her order down). She came with all our food and one of our plates was a completely different order. She took it away and our son waited 20 mins extra for his meal. Worst part? Wasn't even checked on once past that point to see if our meals were ok. Not everyone got waters that we asked for. I didn't get asked for a top up on my coffee. Overall terrible service. And go figure not even so much as a discount on my sons meal that came 20 mins late! Unreal. Will never go back due to lack luster service! Not even rectified by our server in any way. Meal was just ok.
James Birchall
Great ambience. Had apps on a quiet Sunday night. Shared a poutine and a French onion soup Service was fast and the food was great: will definitely come back. Prices are reasonable also.

Worst Breakfast I ever had. I never wrote a review before but I felt compelled to after eating their breakfast. Everything was extremely bland and the bread tasted stale.

Will not return.

* Worst service I have ever had and nicely topped with arrogance! *. We were in Ottawa for Victoria Day holiday and visited the restaurant on the 19th of May, 2014. We were a group of 13. A young waitress did not want to write our orders (so not cool for her, I guess), despite us having vocal doubts she could really remember it all, and rest assured it was all screwed up royally! My son's kids meal, for example, came last (when asked for kids meals been rushed in), wrong and with cold mashed potatoes--oh, and it was 90+ mins into our sitting.... And that just one example out of too many to bore you with--I don't think it's that important anyway (see below).

The highlight of our visit was the management though. Initially, we tried to bring the situation to the manager's attention (to get our food) and got sent this "floor" guy Rick to us. He came out EXTREMELY arrogant that was noted unanimously by all 6 adults at our table. His only remorse was that they were allegedly busy... We decided to escalate this further and asked for the real manager who we told was not available but insisted on his business card anyway.

And here's the best part: When I called his office (in the back of the restaurant), he picked up though and said that we had already been dealt with (by Rick) and he was not talking to us any more. After that he just hung up! Now, how's that for a customer service!

So, who wants to go in there to try it out? I wonder if that's just part of a new type of attraction in the Market area...

My dad & I from Calgary had lunch. Stephanie was great & burger was tasty.
Jason.flynn
Terrible. Decor was nice when walking in, but the service and the food were both TERRIBLE. I wouldn't feed that food to my dog
Richard Birney-Smith
Outstanding weekday lunch. I do not understand the negative reviews below. My partner and I received prompt and courteous service. The food was exception. Ordinary? Not in the least. We have experienced ordinary and we know what it is. -- I had the lamb sandwich (St. James' something) with fries and she had the smoked salmon sandwich with tomato basil bisque. Both were outstanding. Our only regret is that we live six hours away from Ottawa. - rbs, Dundas ON

Don't let the nice hanging flower baskets fool you! We waited forever to be served by a cold and unfriendly waitress. Food took a long whole to arrive and it was mediocre at best. This place is on a prime location and the unknowing tourists must keep it alive. Give this one a miss.
The Cars
You would think sitting on the patio would be great, but think again. Smells like dity diapers. Makes you want to puke. The poopy aroma is overwhelming. Recommend elsewhere.

My partner and I were here earlier this week for a mediocre dinner. Unfortunately, there was some sort of billing mistake with our credit card and we were charged a random miscellaneous amount the next day. We called to report the problem and the manager on duty was less than helpful. Will not be recommending anyone to go here.
Gabrielle Chenier
Overpriced. Very overpriced drink and food wise ; one can of Somersby and just a couple of pieces of chicken in store bought curry sauce and a poor portion of fries (not even a handful) for 23$ seems pretty ridiculous to me. The service is friendly, but very slow and you can be ignored for ages. My friends and I had to leave our table so our waitress would notice us. The only thing good about this place is it's location and patio.
Bob Mcmaster
Terrible services, long wait time, disrespectful manager Ron Silito
We had a group of 10
They serverd half orders incorrectly and 1/3 of order were not brought at all. I have see bad service but not that bad.
It would have been over if the manager acknowledged the problem but he cut us rudely.
Regarding food.
Salmon was okay
Soups were cold and over peppered
Salads okay
Fries over salted
AK
Service is intolerable and the good/drinks are hardly worth slow/extremely rude service
JG
Great beer but don't complain about the food!. This place always has great beer which is why we went there, ended up receiving a sandwich that frankly tasted terrible, when brought up to the server she seemed insulted and went to grab the manager.

When the manager stopped by he told the whole table that we're all wrong and the food is fine.

You just lost 3 customers for life over a $12 sandwich, good one guys!
Sterling Archer
Food was pretty standard. Just regular old pub fare nothing special. Service was okay however I did not like the attitude of the bartender. He was very condescending and kept calling me bro or dude or something of the sort. Not a bad place but I won't be going back.
SDG
Fish n Chips!. Everytime I've gone I've gotten the fish and chips, so I can't comment on much else. The fish is great and you really get a huge portion for the price. Only gripe would be there's a bit too much batter. Great atmosphere and service each time I've been.
Bill Ralph
Good burger really good shepherds pie service fantastic as always. What's with the crappy un ripe tomato in the burgers guys. Prep guys should not have cut that and line guys should not have served them over all very good
Harold
Poor service tonight, decided to return a few (3 weeks) after my friend was pushed out. The manager that starts with an S came into the bathroom and started to question my friend of his intentions. Yes he was intoxicated but on a slow night with friends, it was completely under control. After being prompted by the manager about what he was doing (using the bathroom) the manager took and basically turned things around by saying "are you giving me attitude?" All in all he made a situation to push my friend out. Tonight Jan 5th our server forgot our pint selection resulting in having a different second pint!

Good service, decent food. I went here for dinner a few weeks ago - My server was great and very friendly, but there was a lot of weird yelling back and forth from the back, to the bartender and the servers.

I ordered the chicken curry with rice, and I was mostly just 'meh' about the food. Small portion, no spice, sauce was very wet. Rice was cooked perfectly. It wasn't terrible, but I definitely wouldn't order it again.

Had the peanut butter dessert, and it was delicious but the menu was a bit misleading - I was expecting something with peanut butter cups and chocolate sauce, and I got a sliver of cheesecake with a hint of PB. Not what the menu says, but definitely good!

Drinks were great, lots of good beer on tap, and it's a gorgeous view of the market as the sun goes down. Good place for after work beers, for sure.

Do not order the calamari. This dish should be called deep fried peppers with a few wee little tiny rings of calamari hidden under the peppers
Mindy_B
Horrible service and ok food. Great location and terrace.
Ahniin
Just ok and kinda expensive. The location is great, right by the Byward Market. I have had both breakfast and lunch here on two different occasions. The service is slow, but relatively friendly. The atmosphere is quaint and pleasant. The food is run of the mill, nothing special and a bit on the pricey side. My friends enjoyed their breakfast and the Irish stew. My breakfast order was wrong, but was quickly replaced by the manager. Never tried their alcohol or appies, perhaps that is the biggest attraction. ps...don't order the coffee, it is just bitter and gross. I guess coffee is not an Irish specialty without the whiskey.
Phil1989
Good food and drink. Went there for a some dinner with friends on a Monday night. Food was pretty nice all around and the pint of Guinness was pretty good quality. All in all a good night!
Cupcake
Great!. The poutinne was soooooooo good and the view of the market is just amazing ! Would go again just for a beer and poutine anytime!!
H
Good atmosphere. The best thing about this place is the atmosphere. Great place to meet friends on a warm summer night with lots of patio space. Good selection of beers. Food is very average but they have the standard selection of pub fare and it is reasonably priced.
Sara
Good place for a beer and a snack. Stopped in here for a late night pit-stop. Good selection of beers at a relatively decent price. Mix of traditional appetizers like chicken strips and a more unique type such as deep-fried pickels. Good portion sizes for the price you pay. Neat atmosphere with a second level that overlooks the market.
JP
Our appetizer and mains came at the same time. Waitress who brought it to us suggested we keep our mains under the hot light in the kitchen until we were ready! We said no so then the manager offered us a staff discount for our app! She wouldn't take it off our bill! I told her flat out we wouldnt pay so she finally took it off our bill but was pretty rude and made it clear she wanted us to leave! Really bad service!!
Kay
Terrible experience. Myself and some friends decided to have lunch here, expecting to have a fun time with good food. Were we ever wrong. Service was extremely slow. The waitress gave us menus and then proceeded to ignore us for around 30 mins. We kept trying to grab her attention, but were ignored. When we finally got hold of her, she said that she thought she had taken our orders and then was surprised when we said she hadn't.
When our food finally came, i was dismayed to see that my bread had mold on it. They remade my sandwich, but by the time I received it, my table mates had already finished their food. Not a great afternoon.
i have been here before and had a good time, so I have no idea why the service and food was so terrible this time.
Grant Buckler
Nice place, big fish. Enjoyed lunch here, service was attentive, atmosphere pleasant, and the fish and chips was good. Be warned though - when they say piece of fish, they mean what looks like the whole fish. I ordered the 2-piece for lunch - 1-piece would have been plenty.
Clambert
Food was slightly above par, but had the best sweet potato fries ever. Beer selection is decent. A bit more expensive than i thought. Still a nice pub with a great location.
Laura Michelle Ross
Not bad, but not great either.... This place was sort of mediocre. The atmosphere is good, but the food is run-of-the-mill.
Mark T
Great Food. Everything I tried was delicious while in Ottawa. The portobella burger, the bison burger and the fish and chips were all fantastic. The portions were big and never left me wanting more. The fish portions were huge. I should have gone with the one piece and maybe had room for my chips. The service and atmosphere were great!
RyanC
Actually a bad collection of beers but the fish and chips is one of the best I've ever had. Although each fish is the size of a small dolphin to get the one piece.
Gary Conas Allen
Dubliner FTW. The Sheppard's Pie (actually Country Pie) was the most authentic I have had so far in Ottawa or Halifax. It was quite tasty, however, they use cream corn in the dish which can be tasted throughout and detracts from the meat flavour.
Washed it down with a couple pints of Harps which was the perfect drink for sitting in the sun on the street patio with great company.
Andrea
Location is fantastic especially for people watching. The service was friendly and attentive. The veggie burger tasted like it was a frozen patty from the grocery store. Not impressed. The house salad with sherry vinegrette was tasty but the tomatoes were obviously hot house and too hard to chew. I would return to try something different on the menu and soak in the atmosphere.

Best fish & Chip. If you go to a pub... Expect pub food...

Alde Dubliner is quickly becoming my favorite pub here in Ottawa. The Fish & Chip is really good! Quite possibly the best I ever had (huge serving though). They also boast a nice collection of Irish beers (I have a weakness for Smithwicks).

As I said, expect pub food when eating at a pub and you should be satisfied.
Olivia
Not outstanding, but enjoyable atmosphere. This is one of my favorite places to go in the afternoon for a drink. If possible, I try to snag the comfy chairs next to the fireplace and the windows upstairs- the ultimate combo. Being able to look out onto the bustling market is always a plus. Haven't had any trouble with slow service, but I've only ever really been in the afternoon when there aren't too many other tables. Food's good, nothing exceptional.
Carrie
Alright for a pub. Basic pub food.

I had the veggie burger. I am pretty sure it was just a store-bought Yves veggie pattie.

Nice atmosphere for sitting around and drinking some beer on the patio though.
Kitty
Just pub food. Not that impressive. Service lacks
Kris
Dislike! Can't comment on the food. After waiting 20 mins I approached the bar to say we had not been greeted or served drinks. We waited another 5 mins then left. Waitresses approached all the tables around us, clearly we were seen and ignored!
Matt
A nice little place to sip on a Bushmills
Sarah
Decent. Pub food all right, and that's about it. It's a tourist trap in the market, so there isn't much to expect.
Riche
Went to the Pour House the other day after some festivaties on Parliment Hill. Had a few drinks not cheap tho not overly expensive either. I ordered the regular nacho and was impressed at first tho I think that might have been the alcohol. The nacho was piled night which is good except that if you do that you have to make sure to layer your ingredients too. The cheese and veggies was concentrated to much on the top and virtually nothing in the middle. However I must give them props for serving the side sour cream in a mini tortilla shaped for dipping. Overall good service food was ok my friends enjoyed thier fries and fish which I'm almost positive is battered and cooked onsite not predone in a box. Also note the Strawberry Poppyseed Salad is said to be very good.

The Aulde Dubliner sits in Byward Market just beside The Highlander Pub. I have been here before a couple of times (once with my wife) but only for drinks and never a meal. On this trip to Ottawa, I planned to have a steak as at least one of my restaurant experiences and, after working up a thirst shopping in the Market for a couple of hours, I decided to stop at this place for lunch… Ambience and Service The outdoor patio at The Aulde Dubliner is very pretty with lots of hanging flowers, whilst the inside is comfortable and very traditionally appointed with lots of dark wood and brass. I sat outside whilst I sampled a few different beers but as it was starting to get a little uncomfortably hot in the afternoon sun, I took a table inside by the open doors for my steak. I arrived just after 11am and the place was already quite busy. The service did not suffer as a result, however, as there seemed to b

The best part about this place is that they have a huge projection TV on the second floor to capture the game with friends.

Nelson: We spent the next night bar hopping, but first a stop at Byward market. This bakery - Le-Moulin-De-Provence - was selling Obama cookies, so named because when Obama visited Ottawa, he stopped by to buy some for his daughters. I am a big Obama fan, but not so much to make me buy them. First stop was the Highlander Pub where we got the beer sampler. From left to right I tried the Hobgoblin (from England, roasted malt with a slightly hoppy, fruity character and a chocolate toffee malt flavour), Tennet's lager (from Scotland, crisp, sharp, satisfying with a hing of fruit and sugar with a hoppy background taste), Wellington County Dark (from Scotland, full bodied with mal, nut and toffee flavour, Canada's oldest independent brewery from Guelph) and Caledonian 80 (Creamy fruity hop flavours make it subtle and smooth). I don't remember exactly how these tasted, but I think I enjoyed the 1st and 3rd one and not so much the second. We also tried the duck wings, which were pretty moi
