Love their patio and beer selection
My husband and I went here for dinner. Enjoyed our dinners, I had the chicken Pot Pie and my husband had the Shepards Pie. Food was tasty and very enjoyable, portions were a decent size. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. Lemonade tasted homemade and craft beer was good although did go flat quite quickly. Good selection on the menu.
I honestly wish I could rate higher but the food quality wasn't quite there. The service was friendly, welcoming and efficient. The selection of beers and beverages were impressive. The food was average pub food, frozen burger patties, unappealing fries. I forget the name of the potato pancake dish with beef, but the meat was rather tough. If the food was a little better, I would go back.
The Sir John A is named after Sir John A. MacDonald, Canada’s first Prime Minister, and it is perhaps rather apt that a pub be named after him as he has gone down in history as something of a major tippler. I paid a visit to the place on a Thursday afternoon, to sample a few local ales and read, and I ended up staying for supper. Not only did I taste several beers that were new to me, I also got to try a dish I had never had before…
This place has a great selection of draught beer. Tons of local micro-brews. Food was quite good as well. The usual pub fare, but done well.
We have been to the Sir John A MacDonald pub on Elgin for a couple of visits and had the Beef Boxty - a potato pancake, stuffed with beef sirloin green peppers and onions covered with gravy. It's best with a salad. The Shepherds Pie and Fish and chips were quite good as well. They have a great selection of local and imported beer -- bottled and on tap. Great food, and some cute waitresses. ;-)
I do not come to John A for food. Its all about the local beer for me! They have a great selection of local beer and a nice atmosphere. It has become a popular spot so get someone to hold your table. Service is good, the owner/manager has eyes in the back of his head when it comes to taking care of guests.
Made our night. Came here after stopping in two other restaurant/pubs with appalling service. Thankfully these guys greeted us with a smile within seconds and it continued right until we left full and sleepy :)
The philly poutine was soo good and my boyfriends steak was perfectly rare with a really nice peppercorn sauce.
We'll be back before our visit to ottawa is over.
Always great!. If you are looking for a consistently good pub on Elgin St. with great food and service this is the place. It is always hopping, the service awesome even on busy nights and the food is fresh and delicious. Excellent selection of beer on tap and just a generally relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.
They got an amazing selection of tap beer with pretty much all the microbreweries from the area (and even further). Food is not too bad for a pub.
Fine pub grub & tasty beer. In Ottawa for 3 nights on business, dropped in here to have a quick bite and watch some playoff hockey. Was pleasantly surprised by good service and decent food. As a party of 5 were were served together; food was hot and nicely presented. Needless to say the beer choices...and the frosty glasses...made for a very positive experience.
Would recommend this friendly pub to anyone visiting the city!
Good food, good beer list. I had the portobello burger, it was delicious and loaded with goat cheese yum. Good crispy fries too. Me and my companions really liked it. I would go again
The best pub food and the best selection of draft beer in town! Will return!
Okay food, good service. Fish and chips, fish was nicely done, decent sized piece and delicious batter. fries were McCains, disappointing. Service was good, nice atmosphere.
Love the Christmas decor! Loved the Martinis!
Atmosphere, food, service all great. Prices reasonable. Highly recommended.
Better than average pub. This is a great place to go for a pub atmosphere but with great decor and friendly service. The food is amazing and there is a huge selection of beer. One of the best pubs in Centretown!
What a great place to sit with your friends. The food is decent but don't try the pancakes. Service was fantastic. Servers a friendly, willing to suggest things and have quick conversations.
My favorite place in Ottawa as far as pubs go. Their draft selection has a great selection, maybe the biggest draft selection around. Food never disappoints either.
Good food, good service, fair price. Great beer selection!
Fantastic wings!. Especially on special, which I am pretty sure is monday, great price and GREAT value!
Love it!. I love this place! Great service, great beer selection!
Sir John A Pub is located on the busy and beautiful Elgin Street. The pub was packed with a happening loud crowd. Ambience was missing music but the loud chatter I doubt any music could be heard! Food was good, I enjoyed my spinach and artichoke dip, the Mac & Cheese was good but not the best, Grilled veggies wrap was decent and the fries were crisp and golden.
Drinks- classic martini wasn't on the list so I asked my server if I could still get it and she said yes (brownie points for her)
Cocktails, Blue lagoon and Berry frizz was decent in taste too.
Overall I liked it and would recommend this spot for a chill night out.
Went out for drinks and a bite. Great selection of beers and equally good selection of cocktails.
Food was classic pub fare, and for the price great value for money (the portions were very generous)
Great for a night out !!!
Went on a Friday evening: place was over crowded, and they still manage to take a great care of us. Server was very attentive, drinks were good and food too! Place is clean. Highly recommend.
Excellent atmosphere, very busy all the time. Great location. Food portions are large. Had a wonderful evening there celebrating our anniversary
A local favourite. Located right in the heart of Elgin street, it's a popular spot. The food is great and it has a nice patio. The inside is nice too if you want to catch a game. During peak busy hours, service can be a little slow, but usually it's nice and quick.
We enjoyed a nice cold beer with lemon herb salmon and a pulled pork sandwich. The salmon came with a plentiful portion of tasty vegetables and the caramelized onions added a welcoming taste to the pulled pork sandwich.
Your typical downtown Brit style Pub...Usually has many beers on tap...during this visit some beers unavailable. Service with a smile and prompt...They have an interesting Pub menu...Did not order food...they also have a sidewalk patio area which is covered with Umbrellas. Generally clean.
