Review The Cheshire Cat Pub - Ottawa

Natalie Cantle
Believe me when I say this food is next level pub food. It’s so amazing, if I could give it 10 stars out of 5 I would. Atmosphere is so fun, staff is wildly friendly, food is AMAZING!!!! I highly HIGHLY recommend eating here. I got the hot beef and yorkie, might be the best meal I’ve ever had. Also my brother got the fish and it was massive. 2 giant pieces of fish and fries, this is a great place to checkout.

This is a phenomenal local pub with a great deal of heart. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, and this is my sister and her fellow's favorite place to spend an evening with great food, great beer selection, and sometimes lovely live music. I am so glad she brought me here years ago and continues to bring me back. It's her favorite place. Also the savoury pies they sell to bring home are a great treat. I had a local cider from iron prior and a lovely poutine with a bacon cheeseburger and my sister and her guy had the delicious smoked pork tacos that were there for "Taco and Tunes" Tuesday. I can't recommend this place highly enough.

A lovely lunch out at The Cheshire Cat Pub today. First time dining here and I was thoroughly impressed. I had the cheddar bacon soup and my son had the "mad hatter sandwich". We each enjoyed a craft beer on the outdoor patio, and although it was a bit breezy, I was fine with use of one of the pub's deck blankets. Excellent food, excellent atmosphere, excellent service! We will be back :)

Excellent dinning area. We had the Hot Beef/Yorkie and the Fun Guy Burger. The Yorkie is probably the largest meal on the menue. Both tasted excellent. The restaurant has a nice atmospheric vibe. Server was very nice. We were given some free beer sample for no reasons :)

Loved this place! Super friendly staff, accommodating and helpful. Fair priced and delicious food, many, MANY beers on tap. The building itself is very nice and definitely gives the illusion of being elsewhere. Seating can get a little cramped, but it's to be expected when this place is just so good, obviously it will draw a large crowd. Would recommend if you are anywhere even remotely close to Carp.

Second time in Ottawa for business purposes. My client the owner of ServiceMaster Restoration suggested this pub and Wow what a incredible recommendation. From the first moment I walked in, lovely Jada greeted me with a gorgeous smile and set me up at the cozy patio across from live music. She was polite, professional and genuinely friendly. Second best part was my super awesome server Stephanie, Her suggestions of Beef Stroganoff and Toffee puding were out of this world yummy. Each time my scotch was finishing she was right there with a new one. Had great conversations with her as well. As a former chef and restaurant owner, I am picky and really hard to please but this place is a real gem because of this amazing staff and the food. Exceeded my expectations. Do your self a favor and go Cheshire Cat pub and have some phenomenal time and when you are there say hi to Jada and Steph from me. I am looking forward to coming Ottawa soon and having some spectacular food and time at this place.

Great experiences are always had here. Fantastic food, amazing plating, and a great list of beers and beer art to keep everyone amused. Kids are more than welcome too!

This place had a fun and whimsical atmosphere with endless eye entertainment. Everyone at the table got a different meal, and all of them were outstanding!! I can't wait to go back!

The fish was excellent! Beer battered and still light. Not overcooked at all. Tartar sauce was lovely.

What a great place! You know it's good when you struggle to find a parking spot. Good beer, good people and great food all located in little Carp. Highly recommend the bacon burger!! We had a fabulous night at the Cat.

The Cheshire Cat is a restaurant I highly recommend. The food is always fresh and flavorful. They have an awesome beer selection and the vibe is welcoming!<br/>

We live in Orleans, and make the drive just for the fish and chips. It's a cute little place with good service and fair prices. One of Ottawa's best restaurants IMO.

<br/><br/>Je recommande !!

Quirky British style pub just outside of Ottawa offering traditional pub fare. I've now been 3 times and haven't had a bad meal. They have an excellent beer selection. No<br/><br/>Extremely friendly staff. Usually very busy for lunch so reservations are a good idea.<br/><br/>

So I went to the CCP tonight for supper with my mother-in-law, but that wasn't even the best part!<br/><br/>The 'Hot Beef & Yorkshire' paired with the 'Brown Cow Milk Stout' was without a doubt my most memorable meal of 2017! They had a wonderful selection of beer to pair any mood. <br/><br/>It's a quaint little spot with a great ambiance and friendly service. If you have food intolerances you won't be disappointed with their GF menu. <br/><br/>Like this review if it was helpful! Bon Appétit!

Great food and huge draft beer selection. It was super busy but I guess that is a good sign. Staff was friendly & attentive. Try the onion rings and the Fat Cat Club sandwich.

We've had many things here. We're never, ever disappointed. Good beer. Good Scotch. Good food. Good service. This place is one of our favourites in Ottawa.

The Cheshire Cat never disappoints! The fish and chips are always delicious, the beer is amazing, and the atmosphere is fun & exciting - Would not hesitate to recommend!

This place has been around for years, but only recently hyped beyond belief as the urban sprawl looms ever closer, consuming all that is in its path. They were ripe to be targeted by the 'trendy' as they're in this cute little house with a cute little name on a cute little sign with a quaint little interior. Looks so local and 'authentic' - whatever that means to you.<br/>It's also not too far from suburbia now that people can't take their coworkers there on lunch to show off how unique and legit their tastes are. ...or something.<br/><br/>So I tried it.<br/><br/>First time I ate here it was obscenely crowded, and we got a table situated where everyone passing by got to bump into me. I ordered the hot beef and yorkshire, waited a very long time to get it, and then it was so bland and greasy that I didn't think it was worth the price or hassle of returning. Got a stomach ache from it too as a take home bonus. Another overrated restaurant in Ottawa? To be expected. Moving on.<br/><br/>Months later someone convinced me to give this restaurant a second chance and try another dish here because they liked the place so much. So I did, but unfortunately my second visit was even worse. The place was still crowded at 2pm - elbow to elbow seating and loud enough that I couldn't hear my partner across the table nor the server. I ordered the Canard Flatbread and requested they hold the mushrooms please. That was apparently too complicated because they also held the blueberry red wine reduction and the leeks. I got a dry, tough bread (supposed to be naan - it was NOT) with scallions (supposed to be leeks), such a scant amount of cheese that I couldn't tell what it was, and a sprinkling of dried up, shredded duck. No blueberry sauce! Flavorless, dry, disgusting waste of $15.<br/><br/>My partner let me have some of his food out of pity, but his sandwich was also incredibly dry, like they cooked the living daylights out of the meat. The top of the sandwich was dry and crusty, the bottom was soggy  - just how long was it sitting around?<br/><br/>There were also multiple families with young screaming children to add to the traditional pub atmosphere. Just thought I'd write that down in case you like that kind of experience.<br/><br/>By the time we got the server's attention again we had to leave. Server also neglected to mention to my partner that getting a side salad cost extra, and it wasn't even a good salad! The whole experience put us in a terrible mood, and I see no reason to fight the crowds to return here. Eating here seems to be an image thing, or getting so drunk you can't remember the bad, because it can't be about the food!

Fun place with a nice menu that's unusual for a pub. Worth at least one little field trip. I had the thai curry and was quite pleased with what I got. Much better food than the omnipresent local pub chain (yes, you know who I mean). And yes, they have the classics except these versions are fresher than most pubs.

Yorkshire Beef is the best friggin thing ever. Apps are too expensive for what they are - baked brie was delish but way too small and there wasn't enough bread for it. Sausage rolls are WAY too expensive and ours were burnt to a crisp on the bottom. Ordered the Mango berry cheesecake to take home and it was awful. Cheshire cat has very strong entre game - but needs work on other fronts. It's also very hard to get service upstairs - though service was friendly I had to walk around to find someone to ask for a refill. Please bring back the bacon wrapped potato wedge app!!!!!

One of my absolute fav places in Ottawa-West. I have been to TCC a number of times prior to the fire and many times since. They have not lost their rustic feel, and offer lots of room upstairs. The menu hosts a number of local options, the food is absolutely delicious (fish and chips, sandwiches, burgers, they are all good!) and the place is typically packed.

Best pub food and an amazing selection of craft beer. Owner and bar staff are awesome. Try the Cats miaow salad or the elk and bison tourtière. Fish and chips is legendary.
ED
Excellent pub. <br/><br/>First, the location. While it is a bit far away, this is a plus from my perspective as the location adds the right kind of ambience to this pub. You feel almost as if you just arrived to a pub in the middle of the country side. 5/5 for location and ambience.<br/><br/>Second, the food. Amazing. Simple the best pub food of the city. I've had the meet and mushroom pie twice, as well as the mergez (a bit spicy, but very tasty) and the fish and chips twice (awesome). Food is a 5/5.<br/><br/>Set up inside the pub, simply great. Amazing to go in the middle of winter, as it is very cozy and you might be able to get a table by a fireplace. Very clean and well decorated. 5/5 for this as well.<br/><br/>Good beer selection. Some nice ones that are harder to find in other pubs in the city. 4.5/5 in this, as, while great, it is on par with some other pubs. <br/><br/>So, why just 4.5/5 overall? Service. Don't get me wrong, service is good and much, much better than in other pubs. I still give it 4/5 in service, but two of the times I was there the server was a bit rushed. Still, they were very friendly and responsive when we called them, but just a bit more attention, 2 out of the 5 times I was there, would have been appreciated. However, like I said, far above average in terms of pubs for the service (and above most restaurants too), but could be slightly better in some cases.<br/><br/>Overall, highly recommend the pub. I live near South Keys, and still make the 30+ minutes drive to come here with friends and family any chance I get.
Realie
Pub fare done really well, along with good service, price and beer selection.  Had the cottage pie (delicious take on shepherd's pie with tasty potato and cheese topping and gravy and roasted root veggies and greens) and green curry stir fry (equally good, curry actually cooked well and great portion).  New favourite pub outside the centre.

My second time to the Cheshire Cat Pub, I want to love it but I have to say I just like it. I love the atmosphere. First time I went I had the flatbread, it was good. Also had the zucchini sticks, absolutely delicious!!!! Second time, we started with a few orders of zucchini sticks again, they are the best ive had. I got the Ploughman's for my main and it was good but I didn't love everything on the board. Everyone else seemed to really enjoy their meal, the lamb curry dish is very good, I snuck in a few bites from my friends plate. I am looking forward to going back to try something made in their new pizza oven.

Can't wait to go back!. My first time here and I can't wait to go back! We were a party of 14 and everyone was thoroughly satisfied with their meals. I had the Yorkshire and beef. It was outstanding! I want to try everything on the menu but might be hard to steer away the yorkie and beef. I'm sold. For dessert I had the triple berry pie with homemade ice cream. Excellent as well. The atmosphere was super cosy too. Definitely plan on returning.

Sorry!! Not Worth Going Back. Very busy but service was ok. Jalepeno poppers were floating in grease. What you didn't have anything to mop up the grease? They were ok but would be much better if the excess grease would be drained or mopped up. The fish portion, ehile generous, was greasy. The fish coating was inedible and the fish swimming in grease. Terrible.

The service was a major disappointment.. We went to this pub on a Friday for dinner , we expected it would be busy and it was. After waiting almost 45 minutes for a table we were placed in a tight spot with only a foot between the tables . good thing we didn't want to have a private conversation. Then we had to wait again for a server to show up , then we had to wait for our drinks -- all very frustrating. I had a burger ( dry tasteless) and my wife had F&C - okay but we have had better. Overall not a good experience... we may give it another try but the service better improve.

Delicious food, wonderful beers. One bite into my Elk and Pork Tortierre and I was hooked. This cozy pub was the perfect place to spend a snowy afternoon. They have a tantalizing selection of beers, warm hospitality, and a traditional yet creative menu. I only wish it were a little closer to the city!

Great place for a drink.. Wentto the Cheshire Cat on Thanksgiving for lunch with the family. Its a cute little pub with a great vibe. The place was packed and luckily they were able to seat our party who did not have a reservation.<br/><br/>The menu is quite elaborate with a daily specials listing. Had the fish and chips which seemed like their house specialty. The portion size was huge as I opted for the two fillets so I can share. As it arrived to the table, first thought was it was going to be amazing. Nice colour...nice aroma. Unfortunately the fish batter was soggy and it was not seasoned. The fries were good though. Not sure if it was the lunch rush that impacted the quality but I was pretty disappointed. My family for the most part enjoyed their meal. The special burger apparently was a bit disappointing too as it was over seasoned (which I could have saved some of the seasoning for my fish). The service was good with polite staff.<br/><br/>Will I go back? Most likely. Seems like it would be a great place for drinks with friends.

Feels like home. Went for dinner around 7 on a Tuesday night, the place was packed. We had to wait about 10 minutes for a table to open up, but we had drinks at the bar while we waited. I had the Hot Beef and Yorkshire with mash, it was just wonderful. The Meat was cooked perfectly, the horseradish was just spicy enough but not overpowering. Cannot wait for their winter menu to make a comeback.

Great Pub - Enjoyed Everything about it!. We went on a Saturday for dinner. The pub has a very authentic feel to it, i.e. English Pub.<br/><br/>The service was excellent. We were seated at a table at the bottom of the stairs. The upstairs was closed off this night so we had no traffic passing by us. <br/><br/>I asked for a beer recommendation and was suggested to try the hellerhighwater. A nice pale lager, served ice cold! My wife and daughter both asked for a white wine sangria. It was not on the menu but they accommodated and, according to my daughter, it was the best she had tasted. All served with a smile and a "Hope you enjoy it!".<br/><br/>We started with a warm brie served with "ugly bread", There was a fruit chutney on top of the brie and molasses on the side with fresh lettuce and carrot sticks. The brie could been a little warmer but it was still very tasty.<br/><br/>I can't rate a pub without first trying the Fish and Chips. So I did and the fish was great! The chips were good, not great. A little crispier and they would have been perfect. Creamy coleslaw was good but could have been a little creamier. My preference. <br/><br/>My wife had the sausage pile up with mashed potatoes and it was excellent. My daughter went with a naan bread pizza which she thoroughly enjoyed.<br/><br/>It was the atmosphere that appealed to all of us. Great place to kick back and have a few. If I did not have to drive back I would have spent a few more hours there just sipping a few and drinking in the great atmosphere. The hosts were great, super friendly and very accommodating.<br/><br/>We will be going back.

Mixed Review. The beer was great, the service knowledgeable and friendly. The hamburger was the worst I have had in many years - over-cooked, dry and tasteless.

Can't wait to go back. For years I've heard nothing but positive things about this English style pub in Carp and finally this month I made it out there. And oh boy, am I happy I did. Cheshire Cat serves the best fish n' chips I have ever had! Definitely a must try if you're into that. The fries, tartar sauce, and coleslaw were perfect as well. It didn't take me long to return. I learned from my most recent visit that they also have phenomenal onion rings and caesars. Nice patio too. On the other hand, some of the not-so-great attributes about this place are (1) You wait long for the food (but it's worth it) and (2) They don't do a good job of welcoming customers (no proper hostess station) as some reviewers below have already pointed out. All this to say, I'd still happily go back.

I love this place. The food, the atmosphere, it's all amazing. I've tried a ton of stuff here and I haven't been disappointed once. I lean more towards their specials that they have every week and my partner can't get enough of whatever the feature burger is that week. I've tried the burgers as well and they are fantastic.

Went there for lunch ... Went there for lunch. Ate the fish and the flavourful chips. Excellent!!! <br/>Will most certainly be returning

Dinner. This restaurant burnt to the ground a while back . I was hesitant to visit the new building as I thought it would be all drywall and TVs hanging all over the place. Not so .....Amazing!...it is a beautiful and precise piece of reconstruction.....retaining all the stone work, wood and beams , and original atmosphere and charm, even down to the photos of The Queen on the walls. (someone is a real monarchist here!).<br/>They have an excellent draft beer selection. No Industrial beers here. One of the best selections, with concentration on the local micro breweries......Well done!<br/>My wife ordered a Fitzroy beef Melt and a small Steamwhistle lager and I had a Meow wrapped......not sure why it is called that , but it was good, a little heavy on the blue cheese, but I like that. I had a local red, Aston Brewing Company beer and Flying Monkey's cast dark. Both very good.<br/>Service was excellent.....very friendly staff. Total with tax was $57.01 before tip. <br/>Even although we are from out of town, we'll be back.

Overall a letdown. Heard great things about this spot, but from the moment we walked in, I was a little bit disappointed in the overall experience.<br/><br/>We went on a Friday night around dinner time, so we expected it to be busy, so we ended up waiting for a table along with roughly 10-12 other people. I've never been a fan of "waiting for a table" at a pub, but I understand why we had to. There was just nowhere to wait and ended up becoming a crowded mess and we felt like we were disrupting peoples meals who had a table close to the entrance. After about 10-15 minutes of waiting, we got a seat at the bar and have a drink while we continued to wait for a table. It was still a crowded mess at the entrance, but at least we had a pint to down while we waited. It would have been nice if that drink was added onto our bill later than paying for it on the spot. We did notice a couple of groups who came after us got seated before us for whatever reason. Maybe this is because we were at the bar? Anyway, after about a total of 30 or so minutes we finally got seated upstairs.<br/><br/>The restaurant is nice looking, but could do away with a couple of tables for a less crowed experience, particularly upstairs. There may have been half a foot between tables side by side. <br/><br/>The food was pretty good. I just had a wrap and was impressed by the wrap, but could have had more fries with it. Other people around the restaurant had by far more impressive looking meals, so I think it's safe to say the food is quite good and a main draw. The beer selection was great and had the correct pint glasses for each brew. Always a nice touch.<br/><br/>The service was a major disappointment. After waiting around 30 minutes for a table we didn't get shown to a table, but rather got told to "go upstairs and sit at the available table on the right." We didn't even get menus until a few minutes after we were seated. We had 3 different servers brigs us food and drinks. This has always bothered me at establishments. I find I am more inclined to leave a generous tip to one server working our table for the night rather than having several serve us. Also, none of the servers even asked us if everything was satisfactory or if we wanted another drink or dessert following the meal, but rather if we wanted one bill or separate bills. In addition to the disappointing service, due to the crowded nature of the restaurant, two servers bumped into each other and ended up spilling drinks, some of which got on a patron next to us.<br/><br/>I do think I would like to try this place again on a less busy night as most of the annoyances were because of that. The food and drinks were great. The service and preparedness for busy night was less than to be desired.

We wanted to like it...we really did!. We really want to love The Cat...we were excited to go and try but unfortunately the pub fell short as soon as we walked in. No one greeted us at the door...we understand a little wait, it was busy....someone behind the bar told us we could sit at the bar but not have complete service...we could get food but not get regular attention from a waitress. We said OK but did eventually get a table in the restaurant when another couple turned it down. Right from the start we didn't feel very welcome. We ordered (veggie burger and club sandwich) and the food came....it was tastey which was great but the veggie burger was so soft it squished right out of the bun and had to be eaten with a knife and fork (it did taste GREAT and could tell it was made in house). The club had a nice flavor but so over grilled it was so hard that it cut the roof of my friend's mouth. The fries were OK but nothing special. What surprised us the most was NO ONE asked how our meals were or if we needed anything...and we had to ask for the bill. The service was the biggest disappointment but it was obvious that the regulars were being treated very well :( We are willing to give the Cat another try....but don't want to be so disappointed again.

Busy place but fun!. They have a great beer selection and the atmosphere is awesome. I love their burger menu during the summer. I try to order something different as a main course every time I go there and it's always great!
Cool Dude
I really wanted to try this place but it caught fire last night apperently. It is a bummer. The good news is i heard that it will re-open again! I will try this place once it re-opens and update my review if i can.

Great food and atmosphere. Discovered this restaurant just over a year ago and have been several times since. The food is always fresh tasting and delicious. The service staff is friendly and the atmosphere is cozy!<br/><br/>Highly recommended. Try the fish and chips or white wine mussels!

An authentic British type Pub. The Cheshire Cat has been a favorite haunt of ours for several years. This is the place to come to for comfort food, excellent beer and friendly service. Fish and Chips, Shepherd's Pie, Ploughman's Lunch and Soups are very good. The renovation has extended the capacity of the Pub with the upstairs Dining Room and, in the Summer, a large patio. It's a jolly place to be and frequented by dozens of regulars. The Staff are very considerate to elderly clientele but this pub nevertheless attracts people of all ages who like the atmosphere. A fun feature is the bill board outside which has a thought for the day which is sometimes funny and often philosophical.

Lots of HYPE .... But doesn't deliver. <br/>The food sounds good and appetizing on menu but lacking flavor and too much “grease”. I always say I will try a place 3 times, to give a fair chance, but 3/3 times the food was disappointing. <br/>Tried elk pie (guests), curry, sandwich and soup, fish and chips (so greasy)<br/>Cozy atmosphere, very dirty, you better like the clientele and not want any sort of conversation you aren’t willing to share with the bar.

Had to go look inside. A friend and I drove by the Cheshire Cat pub on our way to the Carp airport to pick up a rescued dog. I never had a reason to go there until last Sunday night, but when we passed the pub we just had to go peek inside. And then we were hooked by the look of the place, the friendly atmosphere and the smell. Oh that heavenly smell of the Sunday roast, with gravy and mash. We just had to come back. i had been thinking about the place the whole week and Friday we booked a table (highly recommended if you want a spot). I had the Beef and yorkie pudding, my husband the fish and chips and my step son had the white wine mussel. We also had the ale and cheese soup. I'd recommend asking for more bread to soak the mussel's sauce. Everything was fantastic and loved the fact that the products used were locally grown. After the apple bread pudding we were ready to surrender. Worth the detour for sure. And they had Steigl on tap. We could have been in any old English village's pub in the shire. Loved the place and we'll come back.

Charming. My husband and I love this place. Beer on tap is constantly changing and often features local breweries. The food is always excellent. The ingredients are local, fresh and the menu items are original and delicious - think gastropub rather than pubgrub! Service is warm and friendly. Only complaint is that I wish this place was bigger as it's always packed :)
Genevieve
Very good! Had the yorkie and beef, amazing gravy, mmmmm. Would recommend for anyone searching for something authentic and different

Feels genuine. The Cheshire feels and tastes genuine to me. I swear that I was there at opening once and as soon as I got in there was already an elder Englishman slouched over a pint at the bar, holding court for anyone who would listen.<br/><br/>I have had all the curries. Fantastic. My new favourite is the lamb pie. Love love love.

Nice Spot. The Cheshire Cat Pub is worth visiting in the Kanata-Stittsville-Carp area. It offers good food and a nice outdoor patio.

I love this place. Such an obscure location but the restaurant and patio are amazing. The elk/mushroom and lamb/blue cheese pie are so delicious that I dream about them. Great selection of local brews on tap and service is pretty good. My friend did not like her meal and they did not even charge her for it. The server went out of her way to make sure our experience was good. I had to make the trip before I moved away just so I could get my fix.
George
Cozy. I had the fish and chips, I liked them very much, fish was cooked nicely with a light batter.

Nice pub. And an eatery

Love it here! We came on Friday night, sat briefly inside while waiting for a patio spot. Patio music, both times we have sat there was really loud though. Service was friendly and sincere if a bit disorganized. We didn't mind as we were enjoying some beers from their wonderful and unique selection. Had the Lugtread mussels which were very tasty, and the Ploughmans lunch, which left a bit to be desired. I can go to the grocery store and buy kolbassa and brie for a fraction of the price.Overall, this place has lots of charm, and just feels really welcoming so we will return for sure :) Oh, and the blankets they offer on the patio to chase away chills is a nice touch!
Alison Courtney
Amazing food, not so great service. I must start by saying that I went here because of all these fabulous reviews, and the ones claiming excellent food are bang on. I had the beef and yorkshire and it was incredible, honestly. Maybe even better than my mother's! But the service was absolutely terrible. I am not sure if our server was having an off night, but he could not have been more disinterested in me, my friend, our happiness or our food. Not once were we asked if we were ok, needed anything, if it was good, etc. <br/>I admit it was pretty busy when we arrived and so they opened up the second floor, but by the time we left most people had begun to clear out, so it's not like he was running around like mad. There was zero excise for it. He treated all the other tables upstairs the same way, with one group having to basically thrown their credit card at him for him to stop and let them pay. Another table had an elderly woman who was unsure how to use the machine and he sure did not stop to help her.<br/>I hate to say this, but I'm not sure if I want to go back. While the food was great, the crappy service really put me off...

Great pub food. Great feel in the old structure (perhaps old church?). Low ceilings make it a little loud. The food was very good. The pulled lamb and blue cheese pie was tasty. The fish and chips were very good as was the cottage pie and the ruben. Everyone was happy with their meal. The prices were reasonable. Overall a great pub experience.

Best Pub Food In Ottawa!. This was our second visit to this restaurant and I can't give enough praise to it. Unlike the Royal Oaks, Kelsey's,Montana's and the other run of the mill chains in Ottawa that are serving pre packaged frozen meals that you can buy at M&M. Cheshire Cat does most of their food if not all in house from pot pies to desserts you can taste the quality and care that goes into the food. The service last night was top notch making me feel like I was in the U.S with the utmost attention on how our food was and the overall dinning experience. I had the large fish and chips. Not often I can't eat what is put in front of me but ast night was the exception. This giant portion of fish was battered nicely giving way to a moist yet not too mushy inside of flavorful white fish. I could hardly get to the fries but the ones I did eat were ok. My only one complaint was the slaw a tad on the bitter side and not enough vinegar or pepper. Our enthusiastic server convinced us to try their in house desserts that change throughout the night while the kitchen makes up new things as they run out. We had the bread pudding and it was out of this world nice blend of cinnamon maple and brown sugar with thin slices of granny smith apples as a garnish. Thinking we would only get a small portion to share it came to the table as two good sized slices yummmm! Very busy place the parking lot fills up quickly. Great selection of local beers also.

Gluten Free Friendly. Not only is there great food and brews the menu clearly defines gluten free dishes. They are EXCELLENT.

Evolution of a Pub, not to be Missed. We have been regular customers for a number of years, but recently we attended a monthy event at The Cheshire, for the first time, wine pairing with dishes from a certain country. In this instance it was Argentinian wines and food. We were very pleasantly suprised as to the quality of the entire evening. This event is hosted by the pub owner, Dustin Therrien. There were many positives, but here are a few highlights:<br/>• Dustin showed tremendous knowledge in the food paired with the selected wine<br/>• Dustin showed tremendous knowledge about Argentina, and their wine industry<br/>• Dustin showed outstanding knowledge about winemaking in general<br/>• Extensive knowledge about Argentinean wines availability in LCBO<br/>• Staff service was excellent<br/>• Very nice touch to introduce the entire chef team behind the scenes, at the conclusion of the event, as they did a great job.<br/><br/>My wife and I used to come here for the beer initially, then the ribs and beer, then for the Patio Grill, and now for wine / food pairing...........bottom-line this pub / restaurant, continues to evolve to offer something for everyone. Looking for something different, give the Cheshire a try, my wife and I did, and we keep coming back.<br/><br/>Ed

Was looking for somewhere different to eat before a Sens game. This place was perfect! A comfortable, warm, English Pub. The service was fantastic and the food was even better! Would recommend this place to anyone!

The Cheshire Cat Pub is an incredible value for your money. You would expect to pay a lot more for the food you get there - absolutely delicious. We had the meatloaf sandwich and fish & chips with a starter of roasted red pepper with goat cheese and it was amazing. We're probably going to order the exact same thing next time it was that good... 10/10!

Great!. As ex-pat Brits, we are always looking for home comforts, especially when it comes to eating out! The Cheshire Cat is the closest we have come to good British food since moving to Ottawa 11 years ago!<br/><br/>Great beer selection and very nice wines.

Our first time at the pub: great dinner location for a pre-Scotiabank Centre concert with good beers on tap and very tasty upscale pub food just like mom makes. Nice job guys, we'll be back!

Loved It!. What a pleasant surprise! My family and I wanted to try something new, so we took the Urbanspoon slots for a spin on iPhone. We're getting tired of resto chains. We saw that the Cheshire would be the first to serve Kitchissippi Dark Ale, and that's what sold us to begin with. Then we saw that the pub is also kid-friendly. Bonus. When we got there, we saw that there were many cars parked on the side of the road and the main parking was full (Friday night). That's often a good sign of a place worth going to. It was packed inside, but the staff was very on top of things and made sure everyone was taken care of. The Kitchissippi ale was fantastic! Chicken wings were crunchy and fresh, fish & chips were fresh, perfectly battered and quite generous of a serving, my hubby liked the steak & kidney pie. The bangers were a bit too salty, but I guess if you're having a beer to wash it down, that's ok. Last but not least, we shared a blueberry-carrot cake that was to die for. It was perfectly sweet but not too sweet with a killer frosting, and you could see the fresh blueberries and carrots in the cake, plus coconut for texture. OMG! We will come back perhaps on a less busy night and maybe when patio season hits. This place is easy to find and really hits the spot and then some. Kudos to the staff who are courteous and friendly.

A Bit of Merry Olde Right Here!. Having visited Merry Olde and customed many a public house on my travels I can honestly say the Cat is as close as I've seen this side of the pond to an authentic English country pub. <br/><br/>A boisterous atmosphere welcomes you as regulars jostle good naturedly with newbes for position at the well worn the bar. Usually the mainfloor and secondfloor dining areas are no less crowded. In summer the patio is open out back. <br/><br/>That said, we`ve never waited that long for a table. In fact, it`s rather pleasent to relax and sip a hand crafted cask conditioned ale (or one of the other featured brews) while waiting. Just remember, this is no fast food chain (or haute cusine dining establishment for that matter) so be prepared to go with the flow and you`ll be fine. <br/><br/>To the food; after several visits (summer, fall and winter) I can report that it is generally of very good quality, well prepared and presented, appropriately priced and the portions are generous. Some of the best fish and chips I've had in town (the two piece dinner is a prodigeous serving). The bangers and mash, meatloaf sandwich, savoury pies and plowmen's were brilliant but a jar of Colemen`s should be on every table. The green curry stirfry (a bit tame for my taste), salads and soups have all been good.<br/><br/>What I like best about this place is the wide selection of unique (to Ottawa) beers and that it reminds me of good times had in the Cotswolds.<br/> <br/>If you want a that real pub experience make the effort to visit the Cheshire Cat. You won't be disappointed.<br/>Cheers mate!

Great beer, great food. Great beer selection and great food. Had the burger special - cheese, bacon, chorizo, and bbq sauce. One of the best burgers I've ever had!

Great pub!. Best spot to grab a meal before a game/event at Scotiabank Place.

Make this one a "Regular". I'm shocked that 100% of raters didn't like The Cheshire Cat; I've never had a negative experience here and I've never once heard someone say they had either. My husband and I have been here at least 20 times this year with various friends who've all had a great time.<br/>The food is always fresh and plentiful, the service always friendly and welcoming, no matter how busy they are. With great seasonal features and new local beers on tap you can always have something different and new.<br/>Warm, friendly and satisfying.. this place just makes you feel good!

Worth the drive. This is one of those fun out-of the way locations that can be very rewarding. Although the list is "pub-fare", the description is not truly accurate. It should be "pub-fare with flare". Not just the typical selection but subtle twists on the dish to make it unique and wanting to try the other dishes. The draft beer selection varies with some very unique and excellent local micro-breweries. The location is rather unusual as it is in the country but on the edge of industrial/country. However, sitting on the treed terrace, one has the feeling of the quaint old school house. The interior looks dated but I just walked through to the terrace so I didn't get a fair view. Certainly worth the drive.

Great staff get together kinda place!. If you're looking to have a staff function to end a busy work week, this place is great! The 'century home' feel is kept and is wonderful. The lunch specials are great too - I agree!

When we entered we were awed at the atmosphere. It felt like we were stepping through the doors of a traditional pub in the Cotswolds. The feeling was amplified by the heads of most of the patrons that turned to look at us as we entered as if to ask "Who are you?". I almost expected the staff to have British accents. They didn't. We were led up the old wooden stairway to the top floor where we sat by candlelight at one of the tables with old wooden mismatched chairs. The room was filled with young children, seniors, and everyone in between. Clearly this was a favorite among many. The service was friendly and the food was delicious. It turned out that there was only one breakfast option, and Pat ended up getting it. It was a sausage and over easy e

I’d say this was a great place for a team-lunch, but Cheshire Cat is really a great place for any meal. It kind of feels like eating at home:). I think the relaxed atmosphere and hearty pub bites really makes you feel warm even in the during the harsh Ottawa Winter time:). Definitely drop by if you’re in the neighborhood!

From the second I saw this place, I felt like I was going to my Grandma's house for dinner. The sun beaming over the rooftop and big beautiful trees shading the path to the door, how it used to be walking up to Grandma's door on Sunday afternoon. I was delighted to see novelty decor scattered about that reminded me I was about to walk into a pub and eat some real English food. From what I could gather about this place it used to be a schoolhouse and they recently went through a renovation of their kitchen at the back of th

The menu is full of traditional english pub goodies such as the ploughman's lunch , welsh rarebit, and bangers and mash; and I do believe they are all done right.

A friend of mine recommended I grab a bite to eat at this little gem during a road ride. I just got into road riding this year and did a 100k ride on Saturday. Mid way through, I was famished and just in time for lunch! They have a pretty regular pub fa
