Review Alice's Village Cafe - Ottawa

Decent food and drink. Had the Buffalo chicken wrap. Have to say it's probably one of the best ones I've had in a long time. The craft ginger ale was also rather tasty. Was not a big fan of the kettle chips. Tasted a little burnt. Decently salted though. Not too much or too little. Really good bang for your buck. Especially considering the location. Was not able to finish my entire meal and I'm a fairly large man. My dish was $16 before taxes, so you get a fairly good amount for what you pay for. Highly recommend people stop by and try it if they are in the area.

Delicious food, friendly vibes, and excellent service! Not expensive either 🙂; 10/10 strong recommend. My only qualm is with OCTranspo - no transit route to Carp (the only bus to Carp is completely useless for it runs once a week, it might as well not exist). Unless you have your own vehicle, the transit option is to bus to Innovation station, and then take Uber/Lyft for the final leg.

We ran into this cute cafe in Carp. It was really hard not to leave with all the baked goodies we saw. We had their Spicy Chai Latte and BALT, they were delicious! Would absolutely go back and try other things in the menu.

Outstanding service, great menu and a super fun location! The only thing I regret about my visit to Alice’s is that I waited so long. Will be back, would highly recommend.

Most visit this place , friendly atmosphere feels at home , great customer service and perfect food Highly recommend

This cozy and beautiful cafe is one of the best I have ever been to. The staff is great, friendly and super efficient; even when the place was very busy. The food is YUM ✨. Definitely visiting again ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Used to be a great place to stop for a coffee and snack, even went for dinner on occasion. Not anymore now that it is completely unfriendly to an entire sporting community. Enjoy your new floors with no customers. Are you going to make everyone take off their salty boots in the winter too? FYI I'm not a cyclist, I'm a market attender.

I think i have finally found a place for breakfast. Instead of giving 3 stars to all the mediocre guys, I'll put 5 stars here. The two problems though are that they are not open on Monday and Tuesday, and that the breakfasts are served until 11am. I prefer Tuesday 1pm ;) but the meals themselves are great.

My Family and I detoured back from Calabogie to visitCarp creamery for the vegan ice cream and found this little gem of a place! They accommodated us amazingly being plant based and took great care to make us something we could eat! The coffee was the best I’ve had anywhere and it was a lovely little place. Found it to be expensive for the kids meals $10 a plate but worth it for all of the other great things about this place. Will definitely go back.

My daughter took me here yesterday as I am visiting from England. The food was amazing and I recommend the Harvest wrap! There is a wide variety of home made cakes and their home made kettle chips are excellent too. Definitely worth a visit, I’m sure we will go back again.

This is a dandy little spot, quaint with some character to it - much like the owner/operators! The food is nice, and reasonably priced, and they have a good beer selection. I recommend you give it a try for lunch or put it on your group bike-ride agenda!

Very nice little spot in Carp, very cozy, the food is great, there are baked goods, fresh and frozen. Open Breakfast, lunch and dinner, you need to discover this place, I will definitely return.

Great lunch spot. Busy and sometimes difficult to get a table inside but there are tables and other chairs outside if the weather is nice. Not inexpensive... but really good casual food.

Had a special date night with my hubby! Have not been here for supper before, it was nice to sit right down, have a menu, nice glass of wine and then as always amazing service and food! Such good times! We left with full tummies and big smiles on our face! Alice's has never let us down for service! Such good energy in!

Went to the Diefenbunker and decided to have a late lunch before heading back to Waterloo. Service was great, food was really delicious with huge portions and it was a delightful experience! Thank you.

Charming coffee and lunch spot on Carp Road in the village; it was lively and bright with a warm atmosphere despite the dreary weather. Great treats and some gluten free ones too! Bonus: an upright piano is available for the playing.
Cathy Hallessey
Cute place, very good food, great local hangout. Love that they have frozen treats to take home too as we are always so full and have to share dessert.

By far the best sandwiches we've ever had The care and quality put into those dishes shows with each bite If you haven't been, your missing out on the best food, in the most beautiful area around

Alice's is a fantastic place to gather with friends. Delicious food that caters to all tastes. Don't miss this great food experience.

Nice place with good food but a bit on the expensive side compared to similar places

Husband and I went for the first time yesterday. Charming atmosphere and amazing food. The ten before ten looks like an amazing breakfast/lunch deal for those on their way to work. Will be sure to frequent in the future for date night or out with friends for afternoon latte and one of their delicious desserts.

This is one of my favourite little café restaurants in Ottawa. Across the street from the farmers market in carp you can grab a coffee and then walk through the farmers market for a relaxing Saturday afternoon. The food at Alice's Café is delicious. My favourite would be the ham, apple and brie sandwich. The various sweet treats are also hard to resist. Check it out it is definitely worth a visit!

Went there for Brunch on Sunday and then later that same day went there for dinner. Not only is the coffee, food great, the staff are amazing!
Carolyn Gardner
Great cafe with an interesting menu! Very popular spot and you’ll know why when you try it out!

Had breakfast at Alice's last Sunday and truly enjoyed the food and the vibe.Great value in a charming setting .A must for anyone that enjoys great food ! Dave and Les

This was my first time eating here in about 4 years. the food was tasty back then but this time was a different story. Where to start....I ordered the classic burger with a salad. The salad had this green paste on it that i was told was mint cilantro. It tasted like neither but ruined the texture/taste of the salad. On my salad i had 2 slices of cucumber that had been frozen at some point because they were translucent. The burger.....it had so much potential but was way over cooked but was luke warm at best. Just utter disappointment. My wife had this soup called Cordon Bleu. no flavour and visually disturbing to look at in the bowl. the flat bread (pizza actually...) was fair. The one positive were the canned beverages. <br/>$50 not well spent. I would rather go to Harveys where you know exactly what youre getting every time. And half the price. The customer-service interaction is weird in there and only one girl working cash and bussing tables. overall really disappointing.

The service style is awkward and doesn't really work. They forgot about my meal and served my whole table but forgot mine. I ate while everyone watched me. The food is a weak attempt at being trendy, not really that good but edible.

Nice atmosphere with great food! I absolutely love all of the pastries. Sometimes it can be really hard to find seating, and finding parking can be tough at times.
Step9h
Slow service and very expensive food. Quality of the food was quite good. It cost $18 for a sandwich and non alcoholic drink. But not many other places to eat in Carp.
Ed Smith
Fresh large sandwich fantastic salads. They were very busy Sunday afternoon hard to find a table on there beautiful outdoor porch: 5+ for staff friendliness and service. Can't wait to try their burgers. Excellent artisan atmosphere.

Great spot in Carp. I went for breakfast, all seems to be homemade including their patti sausages. So yummy! The fried tomatoes are to die for. I was definitely recommend the trip out there.
LostCaper
Went for breakfast and was really impressed, cool building, great food and reasonable prices. I had the breakfast wrap and would definitely recommend it.

Great destination for Ottawa cyclists. :)<br/><br/>Recently enjoyed the yummy breakfast sandwich - healthy refuelling option. <br/><br/>The outdoor seating is plentiful and nice way to relax - great spot and good food.

Very high quality toasted sandwiches, soups and baked goods. The spicy chai tea latte is incredible. If you live in Ottawa, it's a great place to go after a weekend drive.

Love this place! It is so quaint! Coffee and food are awesome. Service is friendly. You must try the big nasty cinnamon bun. OMG it is so yummy!
Dana Chammaa
We loved it , and it worth the drive from Ottawa . The location , the menu, the food and the decoration all were enjoyed .<br/>It's always nice to try new places and explore the beautiful Ottawa valley <br/>

Great coffee and scones are nice too. Lovely spot in the country with art exhibits, special events and foods to take home or eat in. Also licensed.

Nestled in the heart of Carp, it's no wonder why Carp locals love Alice's Village Cafe. You can expect friendly staff and a great atmosphere. Their sandwiches are crafted to perfection, I always try a new one when I go. Their soup and sandwich combo is a great deal and perfect for the cold temperatures approaching. It's hard to resist one of their desserts on display at checkout. You can either get your food to go or sit down and take it easy. Head their on Sunday and enjoy their brunch items. <br/>All their menu items are of great quality at great prices.

Overpriced, and a big disappointment. We arrived around 2pm and found the blackboard menus high on the walls confusing and time-consuming to read. Surprised to find we had to pay at the cash - all time-consuming. My partner had a burger which he enjoyed and a delicious Lime-Soda. Unfortunately, I ordered the Smoked Salmon sandwich overpriced at $12. It arrived stacked and looked pretty but was a huge disappointment. The thinly sliced swirl bread was hard and stale. They must have run out of cream cheese because it was visibly almost non-existent.<br/>The smoked salmon was wet, mushy, tasteless. I returned it and waited some time for the cashier to find it on her computer system in order to reimburse me. The ham and lentil soup was good with an itsy bitsy small piece of baguette. There was no charge. The food preparation people should try Kettleman's Bagel Factory in The Glebe to learn how to make a delicious Smoked Salmon sandwich for $8.00. The experience spoiled an otherwise lovely day. We will not return.

Best Breakfast in Ottawa. I came to Alice's cafe wondering why my father wanted to take my mother and I all the way to Carp from Bells Corners just for breakfast. Just walking in the door you could already tell why. The staff was friendly and cheerful and the self serve coffee bar was pretty neat too. When the waitress brought us out food I was even more impressed. The food had a rustic feel and was full of flavor. Our dishes were the classic breakfast, breakfast Sammy and the lemon bread French toast. I would recommend any of these dishes and will definitely be coming back to Alice's!!!

Expensive but Good. PROS: Atmosphere is great, food and drink is great, people are great, building is very nice. But you pay for all that.<br/><br/>CONS: Expensive, and the location is annoyingly in the middle of nowhere. Wifi is a little sketchy on some days.

Expensive But Exquisite. Alice's was opened by and is run by the owners of the Cheshire Cat Pub. Unlike The Cat, this isn't a pub but a cafe environment focused more on sandwiches, soups, specialty coffee and baked goods. They also have a number of independently made sodas and beer available.<br/><br/>The service is good and friendly but this isn't necessarily a place to go if you want a quick, 15 minute lunch. It's often very busy around noon and since orders are made on demand, it can take a while for your food to arrive. This is all by design however and you should expect it. Everything is absolutely fantastic, though it can be heavy, especially since once you see all the amazing stuff on display, you won't be able to stop as just a sandwich. It's also premium cafe priced. If you want a sandwich plate and a baked good, expect to spend at least $10, probably closer to $15. That number only goes up if you add in a coffee or soup or something else. It's all excellent though, I can honestly say I've never had something from Alice's that didn't make me say "I have to get this again soon."<br/><br/>Eating at Alice's is neither cheap nor necessarily light on calories but you'll very likely enjoy it and I'd say that even if you don't live near Carp, it's worth the hike to experience.

Hit and Miss. Alice's Village Café needs to improve their set-up. Upon entering, you join a line to place your order ... but the daily specials, which are posted on the opposite side of the cash are not visible if there are a number of people in front of you. With my first visit, I was surprised by the set-up and had to change my order just before paying. Additionally, since you are paying up-front for your meals, you are also paying your tip in advance of receiving service. Personally, I don't like this type of scenario and I don't believe it promotes good customer service. Note that cutlery and napkins are along the wall as you travel to your table and you really need to pick it up yourself. At times your food server will bring cutlery, but other times they will not, so you can't rely on the service.<br/><br/>The food at Alice's is hit and miss. I had the breakfast special which was an Avocado and Tomato Benedict that was wonderful! So fresh and bright! I've had the grilled cheese sandwich that was good, but not better than I could make at home. And I've had the quiche that was so bad, I couldn't eat it. <br/><br/>I'm honestly not sure I'm going back to eat a meal. If a restaurant can't deliver on a regular basis, why risk paying money for bad or mediocre food? There are plenty of places that consistently serve good food.<br/><br/>I may, however, return for coffee. The ambiance is quite charming on the inside with the wood tables and the brick walls. And it has a nice vibe if you just want to sit back and relax.

I will go back!. Went to Alice's cafe today for the first time. I must say that I was impressed with the service and food. I will definitely go back again. Had the sinful cinnie bun (delish). I had lots of fun looking around the cafe at the art work and other items they had for sell. I poked my head into Hummingbird Chocolates downstairs. Washrooms were very clean - always something to check as it says a lot about the overall cleanliness of a resto. The only issue I had is that the refridgerated case where you order had savoury and sweet items in the same compartment. This is a no-no as the smells of the savoury items start to blend into the sweet items. I would suggest that they try to separate them.

Underwhelming service. As a young father with two kids under the age of three, I sure hope mothers in my shoes get better service than I did. <br/><br/>I was there with my two boys, double stroller, diaper bag, homemade lunch and all. <br/><br/>After ordering at the counter and settling in on the patio outside, my sandwich arrived. No cutlery; no napkins. When the same woman who served me at the counter walked by to bring food to another table, I overheard her tell those customers she would come back with cutlery. I politely asked her if I could get a napkin, as the sandwich was starting to get messy.<br/><br/>"You can get napkins inside, on the coffee table." <br/><br/>I had the one year-old in my lap and the three year-old at the table eating his lunch. I had my hands full. In this context, after I had already tipped her at the counter before receiving any service, and having my hands full with two boys, and her having to come back out to give cutlery to the other table, I didn't think I was asking for much. <br/><br/>As she went inside, I told myself not to overreact - perhaps she was just telling me so I knew for next time. Alas, she returned with cutlery and napkins for the other table, walking past me twice, with no napkin in hand.<br/><br/>To make matters worse, the food was sub-par and overpriced. I'd like to think - and hope - that a young mother in my shoes would have received much better service.

So So. Was there for dinner the other night for the second time. Burgers and fries are good. Remainder of dinner options are not that great. Kind of dull and uninspired. Food at The Cat was much better. <br/><br/>Young staff was inattentive and unmotivated. Most of the tables on the patio had food stuck to them when we arrived and weren't cleaned by the time we left. The patio floor had food under and around several tables. Recommend more adult supervision or a lesson in cleanliness.<br/><br/>Forgot to mention that the poutine was EXTREMELY salty.

Delicious. I stopped in for a cappuccino after the Carp Market opening day. A splendid coffee. And I took home a quinoa, avocado and spinach salad. Wow! Tasty is an understatement. Generous serving, very fresh and zesty with a nice. Wish I'd scooped up more. But I'll be back.

Ate here for the first time today. I had Alice's Burger and it was extremely good. A bacon cheesburger with bbq sauce. Made with local organic beef and served on an herbed bun. The beef patty was perfectly formed so that it was still loose enough to make a very juicy texture. I had it with fries which were also outstanding. Not at all greasy, nice and crispy, clearly hand-cut. I will be back for "round two" in the near future.

We've the last two weeks in a row for dinner. We had gourmet comfort foods like mac& cheese with crispy prosciutto and burger with cheddar and bacon onion jam. Prices are quite reasonable. And the dessert was of course phenomenal! Carrot cake with cinnamon cream cheese icing and the famous "big nasty" - yum!! Huge mugs of great coffee too!

Great food and great atmosphere. A place I love to hang out with my teenage kids. We all love the creative sandwiches and the decadent desserts. The chef, Nick is a rising star. Cant wait to see what he makes next.

Fantastic family feel run by a local family. Good food nice ambiance excellent coffee! A wonderful destination. You won't regret it!!

We had soup and sandwich and both were delicious. The ambience is very relaxing. Lots of natural light. Will definitely be back.

Fantastic!. I have no idea what Mookie is referring to. I had a steak sandwich with a jalapeno bread if I remember correctly. It was amazing! <br/><br/>My wife has had the coffee (latte or whatever :P) and says it's as good as any she's ever had.<br/><br/>Very friendly service, and great atmosphere.<br/><br/>I'll be frequenting Alice's many more times!

A Rare Find. We had a delicious Sunday lunch on the patio at Alice's Village Cafe. The paninis, potato crisps, coleslaw and homemade soup were delicious and the cappuccino was so good that I ordered a second cup. This place fills a food void in the area and is ABSOLUTELY worth the visit.
LadyRose
Great location. A cyclists dream. Coffee is a good size and staff was nice. Also, music was definitely my cup of tea. Reminded me of a Wakefield rest stop.
Crystal
You must have had the water Mookie. <br/>Enjoy McDonald's.
Mookie
Not worth it. I saw the reviews on Urbanspoon and decided to have a stop there. Food was bad, it was tasteless. Service was okay but a little rude. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, McDonald's has better service and food...
Salt City
Please no jazz! No katy perry either! Cant wait to hit this place!
Kavangoriver
Great setting and coffee. The title says it all-also very clean and welcoming. One suggestion: Given the average age of the clientele (and of Carp residents overall), perhaps the music should be vetted by management. It's good, but a bit too contemporary. Or at least compromise on jazz?
Granger
First rate coffee shop and cafe. Located in a new building right across from the Carp fairgrounds, this coffee shop fills a huge need. There was no quality independent coffee shop for miles. The space is very comfortable, with a sun room, tables of various sizes, and a few comfy chairs for good measure. This is addition to a nice patio facing the street allowing you to enjoy your coffee while watching the world go by.<br/><br/>Stopped in for a coffee and a snack, and will definitely be back for more.<br/>I had had a cappuccino and a cinnamon bun they call “The Big Nasty”. The cappuccino was one of the best I have had since I returned from Tuscany 18 months ago. Great foam mixed well with the espresso, a properly poured drink. The Big Nasty is more than just a cinnamon bun, almost bread pudding like. Great caramel style sticky sauce makes this a great pasty.<br/><br/>The counter displayed a number of very interesting looking sandwiches and a couple of quiches. I will be back to try one for a causal lunch some time soon.<br/><br/>Looking for a really good cup of coffee or light lunch in Carp or anywhere within 10-15km, then this is a great choice.

For reasonable prices, fabulous food and peaceful atmosphere its Alice's for the win!
One Of Ottawa's Real Foodies
Alice's Village Cafe in downtown Carp (my husband laughs when I say Carp has a downtown) has been open for 6 days. I first heard of the place from Hummingbird Chocolate Maker at the Ottawa Farmers' Market on Sunday. Her beautiful 'bean to bar' chocolate may be available at Alice's Village Cafe 'soon' . I digress, but here are Hummingbird's beautiful bars! Always keen to explore the culinary experiences in the far reaches of Ottawa, we ventured the exactly 30 kms this morning to check them out. Although the building is shiny and new, it is styled of yesteryear and fits in well with the feel of Carp's country heritage. (They also appear to have an obsession with bikes. Something I would have tagged on urban-focused Bridgehead, and not a place whose destination transport most likely requires a motor. Perhaps an image akin to the yesteryear theme.) The business cards placed by the cash, shows that this is another Crystal and Dustin Therrien production. They are also the proprietors of near

I love Alice's Village Cafe for 3 reasons.<br/><br/>1. Their coffee is AMAZE-balls!<br/>2. Their food is DELICOUS. I leave this place, everytime, feeling really full but really good at the same time.<br/>3. It's peaceful out in Carp. I kinda feel like I'm on a mini getaway because it's in the exact opposite direction as the city.
