Ethical Kitchen is an island oasis for anyone interested in unconventional traditional dietary models and health.
This restaurant is inspired by the work of Weston A Prince, one of the most cited figures in real evidentiary nutrition.
Price advocated for traditional diets that used less grains, and carbohydrate while favouring fermentation and sprouting techniques – all of this almost 100 years ago.
This place also offers as near to a farm to table experience that can be had in Vancouver.
For those that have posted negative reviews here - I would suggest this is due to the fact that the prevailing idea of a restaurant experience should be great service, and delicious food.
Personally, I would take OK service and food of the quality and care like that which is made here – Every Single Time.
Had the soba today, after hearing good things. Their soba is made in house, with hand cut noodles, hand milled buckwheat flour. The meal is finished with a teapot of the water the noodles are boiled in - which is poured into the remaining dipping sauce for a light broth. Great experience, the noodles were amazing, and the dipping sauce well balanced.
Would happily return, and recommend to friends.
My rating is based on food only, but I'm tempted to give a 4.5 for the ambiance. Service is warm and welcoming.
Great Pancakes and Waffles!. Ethical Kitchen does a great job with their Sourdough Pancakes/Waffles! If you're into more of a sour taste I would recommend the pancakes. Not a big fan of sour taste? Then I would go for the waffles(which are my favorite). Both come with a highly addictive syrup, Enjoy!
Great experience. Well, I have had only amazing experiences at the Ethical Kitchen. I was shocked to read many stories on this forum of people complaining. In the past month I have dined here about 6 times. I've had lunch as well as breakfast. Simply put, the food is incredibly healthy, vibrant, and tastes wonderful. It is homemade cooking at its best, AND they use almost entirely organic ingredients. Some people complain about 'poor or ambivalent' service. I think what people need to recognize is that there is a difference between 'real' service, and fake service that we have become accustomed to at all these cheesy 'chain' restaurants in North America. I do appreciate great customer service...indeed. But people must mature and realize that a BIG happy plastic smile, followed by a "can I get you something to drink" at a chain restaurant becomes seriously annoying after awhile (let alone fake, as I explained earlier). Back to a positive beat..... Ethical Kitchen is putting you, their food, their employees, animals, and the planet FIRST. It's about time we all support such a fantastic location and get back to our roots: namely, real food and honest people. Leave your chain restaurant mentality at home and enjoy this little peace of heaven in North Vancouver. Try the Paleo breakfast/sandwich....and also their pancakes. Also try one of their amazing lattes such as the Turmeric/Cardamom. I guarantee you will be satisfied. Also....a note for people that have 'heard' about grass fed beef BUT do not truly understand grass fed beef. YES, it is healthier, BUT no....it is not soft meat like we've become used to. True grass fed meat should have 'some' chew to it. This is a sign of health and integrity. So please don't complain that your meat has chew to it. This is how it was 100 years ago before we began force feeding our animals corn, soy and grain. Grain will make your meat fatty and soft....and even buttery tasting....but yer gonna have a heart attack indeed! Grass fed is the real deal. It has a little chew and is delightful...very similar to the experience of Argentine beef. I say again people....get back to your roots and eat real healthy food, from honest and down to earth people. And don't get your knickers in a twist if some bimbo in a mini-skirt doesn't smile at you quick enough. Just RELAX and take in the garden at Ethical Kitchen. Take in the mountain air, ....and then take in a truly organic meal that will make you feel wonderful.
Wow! I've been here several times. I've brought various family members who love the vibe of Ethical Kitchen and the quality of the food. I'm paleo and they're more WAPF. But that's okay. I'm not hardcore crazy and I like that EK keeps a casual energy, unlike Commercial drive where I feel it's too cliquey.
Where do I start? I've just had the sirloin with pesto in focaccia and a salad with a miso vinaigrette. I've had the pancakes with butter maple syrup. These are the best pancakes I've ever eaten! I notice raisins studded inside - quelle surprise! The maple syrup was soooo deliciously rich. I've had their pulled pork with quail eggs and salad. I've pretty much have eaten almost everything on their menu. Everything was good. I remember their heavenly squash pear pie. It was an ethereal floral dance on my tongue.
I've had their kombucha. I even added tea to my remaining bottle of kombucha I brought home. A couple of weeks later - BAM! Fermented! They have good scoby. I've bought pretty much all their krauts - seriously good. I've tried their raw, organic honey. Don't know if it's from their own beehive but I know they had one on the roof. most importantly, they are my source for FCLO. If you're paleo or WAPF you'll know what that is.
I love that Barbara sources ingredients that are local, organic, pasture-raised, grass-fed AND finished as much as possible.
I love the casual way in which this place operates. Little daughter playing, garden just outside the door, ever changing and additional menu and products and cojoining her eating space with an organic grocer next door that serves authentic Japanese udon. I enjoy the occasional seminar on beekeeping, fermenting and, not that I've attended, a biweekly salsa get-together.
Okay, WAPF is Weston A. Price Foundation, of which Ethical Kitchen is a chapter. Look it up and you will appreciate this place.
Update: July 5, 2014
Had the gluten-free sourdough buckwheat pancakes with whip cream and strawberries. Good tanginess which matched the dandelion kvass drink. My friend had the regular sourdough pancakes with pork belly and two eggs and a strawberry coconut smoothie. It's an acquired taste but we eat it in good conscience knowing how much this is good for our health. Although it's a lot of food, it never feels like a weighted feeling in my stomach like regular breakfasts. Bought a bottle of native elixir for my mom's diabetes. Let's see how she fares.
As to the comments on Barb and the service, it has always been very good, like eating in a family environment. Barb is a supermom and I'm always amazed at how much she works and has accomplished (workshops, seminars, making jarred condiments, gardening for her ingredients and making elixirs, etc.) While prepping, cooking, cleaning and everything else, she takes care of her kids in the restaurant. This is not a white linen cloth environment but a family, friendly, no Wi-Fi neighbourly vibe. So those with designer purses and slick BMW's need not eat here unless you understand WAPF.
The BEST restaurant!. This is a truly amazing restaurant. It is beautiful to see the love and care put into every dish, using the highest quality ingredients and thoughtful preparations. Extremely reasonable prices for generous portions of DELICIOUS food- especially considering local, organic foods are used and all the animal products are grass-fed and free range. The food and atmosphere are warm and homey, everything I have tried I have absolutely loved. And don't forget to get dessert and a homemade kombucha! It is such a unique treat to be able to go out for a tasty meal which is also nourishing. Feel good about taking your family to eat here!
Deeelicious - like only REAL food can taste!. I love Ethical Kitchen. I get that excited, gitty feeling in my tummy when I know I'm on my way to have one of their sumptuous dishes. Even if I just have one of their gorgeous snacks or beverages such as their organic, non-homogenized yogourt or homemade kombucha's or divine desserts - I'm a happy momma. I can take my 3 year old there and not be afraid he might be given an almost lethal dose of food colouring or flavouring. And i know that the ingredients used are probably of the best available as their standards are high - along with their integrity and dedication to true healthy, holistic food. the prices are higher than your average place - but that is because the quality, in every respect, is better. And the investment is worth it.
As a nutritionist I see the value in healthy eating every day and I am committed to supporting those who are dedicating their lives to feeding others well and inspiring them to realize what good food really is about.
This is not only a lifestyle but also part of a vast global movement >> in the right direction :)
My go-to restaurant in Vancouver. This is my favourite restaurant in Vancouver. The quality of what they are doing I have not found elsewhere. This is the highest quality most traditionally prepared food in Vancouver.
The quality of meat and ingredients being used would only perhaps otherwise be found in 5-star high -priced restaurants. Without compromise I know personally they source only the finest organic ingredients to be used in there food. Without a doubt the grass-finished ethically raised meat being used from their family farm in Northern BC is the best I have had. The best part is the prices are simliar to that of any other restaurant using non-organic ingredients.

Great local and organic food. I love Ethical Kitchen restaurant because you can be sure you are only putting into your mouth organic, grass-fed and local ingredients when you are dining there. My three-year old daughter loves their fruit crepe...and me too :). My husband is a heavy meat eater and he adores their burgers and I agree with him - especially the lamb burger is amazing! I like that you get lots of seasonal vegetables and greens (some of them grown in their front yard garden) as side dish. We would almost always wash down the food with their Hibiscus soda, a greatly tasting and very refreshing drink. The interior of the restaurant is very cozy, staff is super friendly and you feel like you were invited to a friend's home.
We have decided to throw our daughter a birthday party there because we wanted to make sure that the kids will eat tasty but healthy food. The birthday cake was fantastic and all the kids got goodie bags full of the most delicious miniature cupcakes.
This is the restaurant I totally trust and would recommend it to anyone who cares about food.
Yummy breakfast, beautiful spot!. Whoa - 4 super positive reviews in a few days of some new folks.....seems the owners have cool supportive friends, nothing wrong with that I suppose, I just usually like food reviews to be objective.
Well, my review is of the vegetarian brekkie that I have had the pleasure of enjoying here quite a few times. It is unique, yummy and I felt full 'till 4:30 pm which is odd for me. I really, really like the flavoured sauerkraut that came with it and the beets are such a nice touch. I also dig the open concept kitchen where you can see everything being made and the folks working here seem to be passionate about ingredients which I love. I am not sold on unpasteurized milk, though. The desserts were a bit overpriced even considering that they are made from scratch but I did enjoy those too. My mate is a larger eater than I, so for him, the portions were a little (but not a lot) on the scarce side.
Looking forward to trying the new menu here some morning!
Ethical Kitchen, North Vancouver. We don't eat out anymore, but we are regulars here because they make the food here with the same integrity as a conscious home cook (who, unlike me as the mother of two young children, has the time and resources). The owner, who has a toddler herself, has an in-depth knowledge of eating for wellness and applies it to her menu. I don't know of any other restaurant/delicatessan that serves all grass-fed meat. Not only that, the dishes are a feast for all senses....plating is beautiful, each dish feels complete and packed flavour and nutrients. It's like getting a visit to the nutritionist, farmer's market and restaurant in one!
My first shot at breakfast and I was sold. Organic home made sausage with potato bancakes and eggs. Grass feed free range meats are the only kind they serve. The also sell meats from their farm and home made bone broths and soups. My Saturday mornings always start with breakfast here.
