Review Jagerhof - North Vancouver

Jägerhof is one of the more unique - close to authentic European restaurants I have been to in Vancouver. Its is not pretentious yet it does feel that you have travelled outside of Canada somehow. All the walls are filled with old style decors, even the sound of the telephone (which is one of those old one that hang on the wall) remind you of old movies. The service is friendly and servers are very happy to help you with the extensive menu of European beers. The beers listed are not common ones so be sure to ask for recommendations. The servers will update you in specials of the day that are not on the menu. We tried a platter and the Jägerhof schnitzel. It is tasty and it did take me back to Vienna but it wont replace the ones I had there. I also loved the side mushroom sauce and the grainy mustard. Unfortunately did not have room for dessert but I saw a black forest delivered to another table and it looked really good. So next time I known I have to plan strategically. I do recommend any of the menu items in my pictures.

Delicious Schnitzel!! Authentic Shnitzel. Homey ambience. Fun live music. We came here on a Friday night. Make sure you make reservations. It is a busy neighborhood restaurant. The live music is festive and fun and not overly loud. Friendly, service. Dessert took a while and our table was delayed but we still had an enjoyable 😊 time. The 3 mushroom schnitzel is my favourite. The apple strudel is also delicious.

A wonderful German restaurant. My Jager schnitzel was crunchy but moist. Upgraded to the spetzle, which was the right choice for me, although I have no doubt the potatoes would be good as well. The whole restaurant has a lively energy, especially with the love jazz Friday nights. The guy who I assume is the owner seems to really like interacting with people. In addition to a number of schnitzel options and other German fair, they have some interesting imported German beers. If you're coming on a Friday evening, expect it to be crowded. I'm assuming Saturday is the same.

The best family run, authentic German restaurant. Staff our incredibly friendly. I've been to restaurants in Germany that don't compete. This is the real deal. German beer selection is incredible as well. Live music some nights. Dessert is out of this world as well. Every time i'm on the mainland i detour here for the schnitzel and beer. A must try!

Super cute, cozy, and authentic family owned restaurant! The schnitzels are fantastic and really generous portions. My husband loves the Jagerhof platter because it’s huge, and has an assortment of meats. My favourite is the expo schnitzel with spaetzle (pictured). The live music on weekends really adds to the atmosphere as well!

Very authentique. The owner is the chef and server. Super friendly. There’s a 100-year old piano in the restaurant and there is live performance on Friday nights. Highly recommend for authentic German food.

Amazing food and fair price. Such a cute place! Friendly atmosphere. Service was lovely. Live music was very good. Do bring cash to tip the musicians when you leave (if you go on days with live music). We did not have cash on us at the time and felt quite bad because we would have loved to have tipped the musicians. Definitely will be coming back here!

Affordable price with Germany food and beer. It is a small restaurant with live bands. Good place to hang out with lover or family

Amazing place. I'm glad I called ahead to make a reservation because the place was packed. There was live music which wasn't very loud or obnoxious. The service was a little slow but considering that all of the tables were occupied and they don't have much staff, they managed well. The food was great- the schnitzel was thin and crispy and the red cabbage and spatzle were flavourful. I'm just kicking myself that after living in North van for over 2 years this is this was the first time we visited.

The service and atmosphere was wonderful. The Weiner Schnitzel was the best I've ever had. Also ordered the seasonal pear and brandy strudel with ice cream for dessert and it was fantastic. Highly recommend this place!

Usually this place is a favorite treat for special celebrations. We love the authentic German cuisine that we grew up with. Tonight though, we were very disappointed. We made a reservation for 5:00 which is when the resturant opens for dinner service. We arrived a couple minutes early at 4:55 and waited outside, 5 adults and a bundled up baby. I tried the door but it was locked, looked inside and made eye contact with someone (so they knew we were there). At 5:00 they didn't open, at 5:03 they finally let us in, with the gentleman greeting us still in his coat. I believe we were there for our 5:00 reso before he was!! As a courtesy, I try to arrive a couple minutes early to ensure I am on time. I appreciate the same thing in return. I get that they couldn't let us in early, but seeing as they knew we were there and it was -1 degrees out, we should have been inside at 5:00 (can you tell I'm German ;)). I have worked in resturants and you are always supposed to be 15 mins early to get set up and ready for your guests. Anyhow, we were the first and only table in, music doesn't start til 7 but we had a little one in the group and wanted to make an early night. We order starters (2 cold salads) and our mains. The house salad was pretty bland, not worth the 9$ in my opinion (just herb greens and vingarette, hardly any other veg and a tiny piece of shaved parmesan). It took forever to get out mains. I'm not sure what time they came at, but I remember looking at the time at 6:10 thinking, "wow, did the cook not start til 5:30 or some thing?". For and extra 2$ on your schnitzel yout get two bites of spaetzle. This time the spaetzle was very yellow in colour, super salty and incredibly tiny. I remember it being smaller style here, but this was not tasty at all. It was so incredibly salty, from someone who usually salt and peppers my food. The service was really slow too. I don't know why it took so long for our hot food to come out. Only half our table was cleared, we had to ask for the bill because we knew it would be slow getting out of there. It was a really disappointing experience, and doesn't make me want to make the trip out to North Van again.

For authentic, tasty German/Austrian cuisine this is the place to be! Great food, friendly staff providing excellent service. Warm atmosphere, enhanced by musical entertainment. Love being here.
Bernd Behling & Vanessa Knowles

It was a Friday night, and we felt like having an adventure. Since the pictures of schnitzels looked so good on Zomato, I called to make a reservayion for teo. We were able to get a table for 7:30 and we were warned on thr phone that they will have live music. It appears that this restaurant had an early crowd that night. When we arrived, the music was going strong, several families with kids were singing along and clapping there hands to the music. We had a table at the back. It felt like we were transported to a small village in Bavaria because we can see that many customers were enjoying themselves, and swaying their beer mugs to the music at timed. We ordered schitzel, of course. They were fine, but my husband insisted that the schnitzels from my kitchen are better. I enjoyed the meal and surprised myself by eating everything. We will be back when I don't feel like cooking, but probably for lunch and not during the weekend live music time. Can't really compare this to Bauhaus because I think the Bauhaus schnitzel gets a 5.0 from me!

One thing though, parking turned out to be $15!

The food is very salty, oily, unhealthy and tastes pretty bad. Portions are big but price is kinda high considering the quality. I don't recommend this place.

Atmosphere 1/1
A cozy spot near the Lonsdale key. The restaurant is dimly lit and decorated with tons of European art pieces. Love the piano, love the stained glass lights, love the gallery walls adorned with tons of wooden frames/prints and stuffed game. I was there on a Friday evening and they had live music

Service 1/1
Super friendly with a touch of familial feeling.

Food 1/1
It's difficult to find a place with high quality Bavarian and German food but Jagerhof has got this! Loved everything on my plate... Mmmm. The meat dishes were tender and moist, and the sauces well done (not too salty and complex in flavour). I wasn't so fond of the dessert (their on take on the Black Forest cake) but I can forgive that because the quality of their savoury dishes are spot on

Price 1/1
For wine, entree, and a split dessert it was around $40-50. For the quality... Totally worth it

Personal opinion 1/1
I rarely come over to the North shore but will do so for this gem of a restaurant. I'm already thinking about when I'll come again....

The place to go for authentic schnitzel. It even impressed my Austrian friends. Not a big place so call ahead for reservations. Definitely worth the stop.

Jägerhof Looks really narrow out front but it's quite spacious inside. Also looks like a hunting lodge with no shortage of stuffed and mounted animals, so if you have vegan friends you don't like, definitely try tricking them into going in for a scream. Price for what you get is pretty tough to judge here but probably the main thing that lets them get away with charging over $20 for modestly sided mains is the fact that when you are tasked to think of Germanic restaurants, your mind will probably go blank. That and their being in North Vancouver.

The Schnitzels were much too big and much too thin, more batter than meat. Too much Red Cabbage and not enough Potatoes, it was not an elegant plate at all.
We were 9 guests and despite a reservation were seated at 2 tables and one table was served first and the other 20 min. later. Not very nice for a birthday dinner!!!

Great food, wonderful waiter!. My husband , a friend, and I dined at the Jagerhof last night and had a delightful evening! The food was outstanding! We each ordered something different and shared tastes. Each dish had a different and delicious sauce. The red cabbage was the best I have ever had with just the right amount of spices! The spaetzle ( not the right spelling) was light and so good, too. We shared the apple strudel -- such an authentic and delicious dessert! Our waiter was so friendly and efficient who chose an eclectic program of music. They have live music on the weekends..from traditional Tyrolian to jazz. We will have to come back!

Sehr Gut !!!!. After visiting the Jaegerhof numerous times since its ownership change , I just can not curb my enthusiasm about this authentic German/ Austrian eatery in North Vancouver.

The food and service are consistently outstanding... My cravings for Spaetzle , Rohtkohl , Schnitzle, a good glass of German wine and some "Gemuetlichkeit" are satisfied everytime I leave the Jaegerhof. The cozy atmosphere, rustic decor and the cheerful energy that Christopher the new owner exudes are fantastic and just add to a positive dining experience.

Jaegerhof Team : Vielen Dank for a piece of Europe in North Vancouver !!!

New Ownership and Management - HUGE improvements!!. This restaurant is under new ownership and management and has been improved incredibly! Everything on the menu is made fresh in house and I love the decor. You don't feel like you're in North Vancouver at this restaurant! The decor sticks very true to it's European roots. The chicken cordon bleu schnitzel and bacon wrapped pork tenderloin was amazing. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Authentic and delicious. I had the schnitzel, served with salad with traditional pumpkinseed oil dressing. Very tasty! I was too full to try the apple strudel, but I'll be back! The meal was pretty darn close to what I grew up eating. It was a bit of a wait to get my meal but the service, taste and value was well worth it.

I have mixed feelings about this restaurant. On one hand, the food was amazing. Everyone loved everything they ate. I even ate some sauerkraut and mushroom sauce that I wouldn't normally eat but both were great. The sausage was great, especially with a smear of mustard and a bit of sauerkraut. The schnitzel was tender and crispy. I really didnt care for the smoked pork chop as it resembled ham and had many fatty parts. I loved the potatoes with the bits of pork in them, that was fantastic. I loved the interior, it really looked like a hunters lodge, with various deer antlers. I did find that it was quite tight seating wise. I was right against the wall and had a hard time using both utensils at once. I thought the service we received was great, although quite sporadic. They seemed to be understaffed by a server or two. The price was maybe a little a high but understandable, about 30 bucks a head for an entree and a beer, tip included. I liked the jagerhof, ill visit again but not too often!

Very friendly and professional service. The food was delicious. Very fast service. Decor was a bit 'gamey' bit suitable for a schnitzel house. Worth vehcking out!

Underrated Gem. You know a german restaurant has done its job when you leave feeling stuffed and with the vague urge to invade Poland! This place hits all the notes, not just schnitzel. Rouladen, Scheinshaxe... the list goes on. I left giving compliments to the chef and vowing to return with friends.

That's the unfortunate thing about German food. It has a decidedly "unsexy" image. It's a shame really as there is a whole generation who has missed out on this great cuisine.

You owe it to yourself to try this place.

Sublime food, amazing experience!. I recently held a surprise birthday party for my girlfriend at Jagerhof. Not only did they meet all expectations, they absolutely soared above and beyond them. The chef prepared a set menu for our party, which included an incredible German style antipasto starter with various delicious cheeses, speck, olives, grapes, pickles, and utterly delicious breads. The platters were visually stunning, served on cut slabs of wood that escape description, you'll have to see them for yourself. Our next course was a pasta with a perfectly balanced and totally unique pesto style sauce of spinach, parsley, back bacon, olive oil, and parmesan cheese. The pasta was perfectly al dente and the color of the sauce was a vibrant green, looking as good as it tasted. The main course somehow managed to top both preceding courses. Light and crispy schnitzel with mushroom sauce, rich and delicious spaetzle, fluffy and crisp perfectly seasoned potatoes, bratwurst, divine sauerkraut, and tart and tangy rotkohl. It is rare to have a meal of such ethereal perfection, and the service was attentive, friendly, and charming. This was my first experience at Jagerhof, and needless to say I will be coming back. Thanks for an amazing dining experience Jagerhof!

Loved it!. Great food, great service! The restaurant was very busy and it took us a while to get a table as there were several people ahead of us but it was well worth it. Authentic European food, better than what we had last year in Germany.

Never Going Back. We've been going to the Jagerhof for a very long time. We would take all of our out of town guests here to try the amazing food. We brought our guests here recently and it was awful under the new owner. They seemed overwhelmed and needed more staff. It took 1.5 hours to get our main course. The owner was serving us and was very rude when we asked about our meal. The food was okay, but not as good as it was before. I won't be going back here again, and I really miss the old Jagerhof.

Watery sauces. We have been going here for years and heard that new owners had taken it over. We found the service to be a little unwelcoming at the beginning and very scattered during. They could have used another waiter. Our schnitzel sauces were so thin that they soaked into the breaded coating and turned them all mushy. We hope the restaurant survives but we probably won't be going back anytime soon.

Vancouver's Best Schnitzel!. Perfectly cooked, not greasy, Schnitzel Cordon Bleu, stuffed with Swiss cheese and ham is fantastic. House Spaetzle mixed with herbs and cheese is a nice improvement. Great selection of Imported Beer from Germany and Austria compliment very well. No Tyrol meal is complete without Apple Strudel with traditional Vanilla Cream. Gutes Essen!

I, along with my entire family, have been eating at Jagerhof for over 20 years. Recently, it has come under new ownership. The first thing I noticed when I walked in to the new and improved Jagerhof for the first time was the cleanliness. The restaurant and wall art are the same as they had always been....only much cleaner.

The new owner, Christopher, came up and greeted me immediately with a friendly handshake. The restaurant was full of long time customers trying out the new food, and he was making sure each and every one of us was treated well.

The new waitresses are excellent, and far more pleasant than the previous ones.

The menu remains largely the same, although the new cooks put their own personal touch on the food. The schnitzel was always good, but it's even better now. The sauces are improved and now served on the side, so you can add as much as you like.

Honestly, everything I have tried (schnitzel, pork chop, bratwurst) are all better than before.

They have also added more German beers, and are going to expand the menu to include more German and Austrian dishes in the future.

Bottom line, I haven't seen it this busy in the 20 years I have been eating there. That speaks for itself.

Well done, Christopher.
I will be returning, again and again.

The Jaegerhof Rest. in North Vancouver has been a landmark for many years. We have gone there on and off.
Since about April it is under new ownership.Since then I have visited it 3 times and I can say, that finally we have an authentic German Restaurant again. From the minute you step in, you are greeted by Christopher, the new owner.
He pulls out all the stops to make you feel welcome and at home.
The place is very clean and a friendly atmoshpere prevails.
The food is very good, improved over what there was before. The Spaetzli are really very good and made right in their kitchen ,the red cabbage (Rotkraut) like mother made it and the different Scnitzels are wonderful. I like that the sauces come on the side so you can use as much or as little as you wish.
I am not particular fond of Apfelstrudel as they can be dry but this one takes the cake. The best I have ever eaten.
So you want a nice evening out, not too pricey but delicious and a very European setting, the Jaegerhof is it.
You will not be disappointed.

We have been going to jager hoff for many years, as a family favorate. and were surprised to see it under new management. we found it the same, yet different.. good different!!.. the food is every bit as good and i think even better!. the salad is cut into bite size pieces, insted of half a leaf. the soups are very good, they always have the best soups!!.. the schnitzel is better, the meat is more tasty and the crust is more crispy, with the sauce added at the side, you can add as much as you like. they have a better beer selection. and the apple strudel is the best i ever had!!.. be prepared to wait a little for your food, some people seemed dissapointed at the wait. they are super busy!. so make reservations. we just make a evening of it.

My husband and I have been going to the Jagethof for years, but when we heard it was under new management, we were skeptical to say the least. We decided go give it a try and we were delightfully surprised. As soon as we walked in, we found the atmosphere, while still familiar, fresh and inviting. The new wait staff were warm and friendly and the food was delicious. The new kitchen staff has added a new zest to the food and it is a happy improvement. While my husband always orders his schnitzel, which is still good, I decided to try the creamy parsnip soup. It was by far one of the best soups I've had in a long time. To say we were nervous about the change, is an understatement, but after a wonderful evening all we can say, is keep up the good work... we will be back!

New owners??. We have been going to the Jagerhof for years.....special family occasions have always been celebrated at the Jagerhof and the outing eagerly anticipated .....!! We were very surprised when we arrived at the restaurant to see new faces. Immediately we thought that the restaurant must be under new ownership which isn't always a bad thing. We love the schnitzel and wanted to stay to see if all was still good.....and sadly.....it is not. The service was poor, the food was not to the standard we had experienced in the past and it is with sadness that our family celebrations will no longer take place at the Jagerhof. We hope that all feedback will be used constructively by the new owners.....this doesn't have to be the end of the Jagerhof Schnitzel House.....it is truly a great North Vancouver establishment....with a huge, loyal following!

Long Ago and Far Away. 25 years ago at least; all the walls of the Jagerhof were festooned in deer and elk heads making one think their last unsuccessful business venture must have been in taxidermy.
The meals were superb back then too; but tonight I left half the serving untouched, paid the $18.85 bill and left.
Potatoes and red cabbage served luke warm accompanied by a most unremarkable mushroom sauce on a mediocre cut of pork.
I left feeling I would have been better off with a $5 hamburger from McDonald's.

Very good schnitzel. Service was good. No refills on pop though. Will definately come back.

DO NOT EAT HERE! The first time I called to place a take out order, the person on the other end of the phone was rude and hung up on me. I called back to complain to the owner about how I was treated, only to find out the owner was the one who hung up on me saying that it was my fault for calling during dinner time. Unreal. This place has been in business apparently for almost 30 years! I think the owner should consider closing his restaurant if guests and potential guests are such a bother to him!

Best German food on the North Shore. If you want good schnitzel, goulash soup, spatzle, then this is the place for you. I have been here a few times and enjoyed the food everytime.

Average!. The Schnitzel we had was very average. Nothing fancy.

We got the roast beef braised in red wine. Not that good! Tasted like a fast food roast beef!

Waitress was very nice tough!
Love Good Food
Love it!. If you like schnitzel, you'll love this place as they have a whole page of different kinds of schnitzel.
Great basic food at good prices. Can't beat it.
Mushroom gravy to die for
Friendly staff
Highly recommended.

Great cozy little restaurant. The wiener schnitzel was amazing and so was the service. Only thing was it was rather loud in there so if you tried to have a conversation it was a bit hard but could have just been the night we were tgere

Terrible slow and rude service. I'm pregnant and the only thing I feel like eating right now is Goulash Soup, so my husband went ahead and called to make sure that they have some. They said "Yes" and hung up immediately. Then I drove there to pick some up and after waiting 15 min at the door the waitress tell him, that the soup can not be prepared to go. He replied that if it helps he would eat some there and take the rest home if that's ok. She replies very rudely that now that she knows that he wanted the soup TO GO, there is no way that she would do that for him. Bon appetit!

Excellent German food--worth the drive!. If you can handle the Lions Gate Bridge, then take the time to visit this great little restaurant. Some of the best food on a cold and rainy day.

Berlin approved. A couple of years ago my German friend and her husband brought me to Jagerhof... She was new to Canada straight from Berlin so I had to trust her instincts!

Turns out, her instincts were right! I love this place! Great food, huge portions, and an extremely charming atmosphere...

I'd recommend this to place to anyone who will be in the area, it's a definite treat!

Schnitzel is Wunderbar!. My daughter recommended the Jagerhof for my BDay and it did not disappoint! In addition to the weiner schnitzel, there were so many tempting variations. However, our friendly waitress rated the top four popular choices. I chose the Expo stuffed with ham and Camenbert! Also sampled the weiner schnitzel, which was done to perfection. I forgot to order spaetzle and the waitress was unable to accommodate, so I must remember next time. The service was fast, prices were reasonable, and the schnitzel was outstanding!

With Deutsches Haus closed down to the public (schade…), I was disappointed to not have any German restaurants to go to in Vancouver. We went to the one in North Van on Lonsdale called Jagerhof. Sheepie and I entered and stood a while at the entrance and waited for staff to greet us or take us to a table. It seemed like they were not in a rush. Throughout our dinner, we noticed that other customers were treated the same. Nice menus! This restaurant is more Austrian than German.Sheepie commented that as he looked at the decor which had historical images and objects, but it is quite comfy. The first time we came, Sheepie complained again (as with Deutsches Haus) that the schnitzel is not suppose to be breaded. Well, things are ‘westernized’ when things get imported. It’s like me telling people ‘spoons do not come with miso soup! and it’s not suppose to come first! It’s suppose to come with the rice and main!’ LoL. We ordered the salad which was only chopped up romaine with
