Review Golden Maki - Newmarket

Very good quality and service. Not too expensive for the lunch for all you can eat its $25 but dinner is $35, although you can save 10% if you pay cash. ( I'm sure there's pricier places downtown though).

One of the best sushi restaurants in Newmarket / Aurora! Ordered a sushi party platter with karaage and loved it. Presentation was beautiful and the food was ready quick! Thanks!

The sushi was pretty good quality but they lost our order twice. The straws do not have the paper cover so it's just handed to you which we didn't like too much. They ordering system is a little outdated with paper and pen.

This place has White Rabbit Ice Cream! Sushi is great too but this is the best Asian ice cream I've ever had and now I'm addicted to it. You can also usually walk in without a reservation and the atmosphere is really cozy, service is good enough and the yam tempura and octopus is especially well done.

Went to this restaurant for the first time for lunch today. The food was absolutely delicious. Probably one of.the best sushi places in newmarket. The service from Cindy and Michael was superb. Will definitely be coming back

Went here for the first time the other night for all you can eat sushi. Service was quick and food was very good. Would definitely come back!

Great dining atmosphere! I loved ordering through the iPad, and the special rolls were really tasty and unique. Loved the sashimi too! Just very minor things to improve: They did miss one or two things from our order but once we asked, the server was quick to bring out the missing items. Not everything on the iPad’s menu had pictures so if they can add those, it would be amazing. Overall great place for sushi!

*WARNING* NOT SAFE FOR CELIACS Took my mother and sister out for Father's day dinner and while the food was pretty good and the restaurant itself was cute, this place is not safe at all if you have gluten intolerances we mentioned it to staff at the very beginning and were advised that the tempura is not safe (some places do it with rice tempura, they did not here and they used wheat flower in the batter) this is fine we ordered mostly sashimi and a few rolls we thought would be safe from tempura. They don't have any descriptions as to what is in the rolls so we had to go off of the picture. They literally put tempura on almost everything! Pretty much all the rolls had it, we ordered the herbed tuna which looked nothing like the photo and had bits of tempura sprinkled all over it, there was even tempura sprinkled on the dish with all the sashimi. Sadly my mum could have none of the rolls, and tried to wipe off as much tempura as she could but she was so sick for the rest of the day and the next day. So if you are a celiac, definitely avoid this place!!

Poor quality and lacking options. Tried the restaurant based on recent positive reviews. We moved from Markham to Newmarket about a year ago and are making an effort to try various restaurants in the area. We typically eat out 1-2 times per week so we are familiar with restaurant quality.

We were quite disappointed with Golden Maki. First because of the lack of menu options. Expected to see the typical beef and enoki rolls or hamachi and tuna sashimi. None of these were present.
The only things we enjoyed out of what we ordered were the salmon sashimi and tempura - shrimp and various vegetables.
But the eel rolls barely had any eel, the meat skewers were dry and rubbery, and the rolls tasted funny. Even the fried banana at the end was disappointing.
For $22 an adult at dinner, it was definitely lacking. We didn't bother placing an order for a second round as there wasn't anything worth reordering.
An unfortunate experience.

Sushi Buffet. My friend took me to this sushi restaurant for the first time last week. The decor is very nice and clean. We had the all you can eat lunch and i was very impress by their sushi -- they are so fresh and the size of the rolls are very decent. I also recommend the fried ice cream...it's delicious! I would go back again and try their dinner

Must try!. Im from Markham and Scarborough where there are plenty of all-you-can-eat sushi places. Its my third time going to Golden Maki and i can say the food and sushi there is great! Definitely one of the better all-you-can-eat resturants! The service from the servers all met my moms picky eating standards. Highly recommended to try!

Warning - Terrible owner, terrible customer service!. We use to be regulars, going at least once, sometimes twice a week for lunch with our big family of 8 people but will never return. Be warned! We became vegetarians and I requested a very simple change on one of the rolls - sweet potato instead of shrimp - and was flat out told absolutely would not do it. There menu is EXTREMELY limited for vegetarian options and I explained it was my favourite roll. We left when they said no. We have tried several other sushi restaurants and NONE have ever had a problem with substituting out veggie for fish, and were always kind and warm in doing so. Today we were in a rush and decided to give Golden Maki another try. Again I asked for a simple substitution on the green dragon roll - sweet potato tempura instead of shrimp tempura and was again told absolutely not. The woman was completely unreasonable and said absolutely no substitutions, no matter the food restrictions. I was flabbergasted and asked to speak to the owner - I could not believe the way this woman was talking to me - at which point she told me she was the owner. I will never return. Anyone who cannot do something so ridiculously simple for their clients obviously knows nothing about business. In reading the other reviews I can see I'm not the only one who has had this type of experience. I'm absolutely shocked that she turned away our $4000 a year in business just because she wouldn't substitute in a cheaper ingredient on a made per order menu item.

Very Disappointed. We used to come here regularly, but it seems like the attitude coming out from the staff has become quite unbearable lately. It is a Cantonese/Mandarin run restaurant serving Japanese style food, we don't mind that. But they don't respect customers in the fact that they talk behind the customer's back in Chinese, which is rude and not respectful. I know this because I actually understand the language sitting with my friends trying to enjoy our sushi experience. There were certain comments that made me want to get up and walk out the door. Examples are about how customers come in and just order a few things and leave. Or commenting how stupid some customers are coming into an "All You Can Eat" and only ate 4 pieces sushi.

We went in on a Saturday and asked to be seated in a more casual area so we can chat with each other comfortably, but they denied the open table even though the restaurant was not busy at all. I mean what is the big deal letting your customers sit where they want on slower days. We understand if it's super busy, and you need to seat bigger groups. They were so stubborn about it, we were quite shocked. Their excuse is that the other tables are for 4 people, but what we didn't understand was we were already sitting on a four person table! we just wanted to relocate because we didn't want to sit right next to the cashier. What's the difference between our 4 person table to that one??!! That was just lazy.

Unacceptable!!! A tip for future customers, when coming to this sushi restaurant, bring a friend who can speak the language, you'd be surprised what you hear.

I've been to better sushi places this place is alright. My sashimi was served warm and all my other kitchen foods were cold!!!!! :(

Good food but slow. The selection and food is good and a fair price.
But it just takes sooo long to get a complete order. We ordered several items at first and by the time we got all of it we had been there so long already we were afraid to order more.

Bin and Dave. These guys must own a competitor's restaurant. They don't know what they are talking about. I've eaten sushi, tempura, and sashimi for about 30 years. I've probably eaten in about 30 different restaurants. I've had not so fresh (not flash) fish and I agree it's pretty disgusting, but Golden Maki has always been a top notch choice. They have great saki choices too. If you like all you can eat, this is THE place to go. Best in Newmarket (and there are a lot of sushi restaurants here).

The food is amazing, I really enjoy it.

The service sucks, they confirm our orders and they still managed to get it wrong in the end. However, the food was great but the service lacked so much, we will not be eating there again. We are so disappointed that we will tell our friends not to go anymore.

Love It!!. Excellent menu, great take out, and awesome all you can eat lunch. Best sushi I've found outside of the lower mainland BC!

I really enjoy the food here. I read some of the reviews and find it quite ridiculous that anybody would say anything bad about this place. Definitely better than all the sushi places I've been too in Newmarket area except for Akita in Bradford. Some people just make ridiculous reviews but It's their opinion. Bad tastebuds I guess. LoL love their salmon sashimi, so fresh and buttery delicious! Great place for sushi in Newmarket area.

Glad they've reopened. Golden Maki is one of the best sushi spots I've been to. Prices are excellent, quality is fresh and consistent and the all you can eat choices are numerous. The service is quick and very friendly. Their spicy Udon is spicy, so if you're not sure, ask them to 'cool' it down. The tempura is very light. My husband and I go there quite often and will continue to return. So glad they reopened after the strip mall was rebuilt

My new favorite sushi place. I love the food here! I live in Newmarket and want to stay local for good sushi. Sushi Maki has a great "All You Can Eat" selection...they even have seaweed salad on their lunch menu :)
I think anyone who has written bad reviews about this place must not be telling the truth because this place is awesome, especially for the price and what you get I have yet to find a place that even compares...and I am a true sushi lover!
Bin
Nothing in the mune. If you just want to have a all you can eat sushi you may give it a try but ......not a real japanese restaurant ! nothing special!

Amazing value. I suspect some of these reviews have been written by aggrieved competitors, because I am not sure how this place turns out such good food for such a low, all you can eat price. Just wonderful. Less reading, more driving and eating please, urbanspoon guest.

Very bad sushi! I never go any more!!! Bad bad!
Andy
Love the food. Great all you can eat menu. Reasonable price too. Good for some sushi and saki
