Review Mel's Dinor Restaurant - Newmarket

My mother and I came here on mother's day because we wanted to try a new breakfast place and support local businesses but our experience here was AWFUL. When we arrived, we essentially had to seat ourselves at our table and the waitress took several minutes to give us our menus (not entirely her fault since is was somewhat busy but we still should have received the menu when we sat down) The utensils were dirty and when replaced, those were also dirty. We ended up having to wait over half an hour to receive our food which is ridiculous because my mom only ordered 3 eggs, that should have taken maximum 10-15 minutes. But it took closer to 40 minutes which didnt bother me too much but that is NOT OKAY because my mother is diabetic and NEEDS to eat something before a certain time in the day or she will faint. She was already feeling unwell due to how long we waited. The food ended up tasting mediocre. I ordered Mel's hungry man and the toast was good, the bacon was good, the eggs were okay, and the ham was also okay but the sausage didn't taste good. As for the pancake, it was very poorly cooked. It tasted raw in the middle and burnt on the outside. I had to mask the taste with maple syrup and butter. The restaurant is also quite dirty and we noticed immediately as we walked in. especially in the kitchen and the washroom, my mom was worried about this being a health hazard but we stayed anyways and tried to give them the benefit of the doubt. We also tipped the waitress because it is not totally her fault that the service was so poor. I was confused by how awful the experience was because of the good reviews this place had but honestly, the clientele here is questionable. The experience ruined mother's day for my mom and I feel awful for suggesting it.

Great place. Current owners of 21 years closing May 31st, 2022. Someone said they may reopen under new management. Cross your fingers and hope that the thing that happened at Famous Sam's doesn't happen here (the new owners were not up to snuff).

First time customer at Mel's. We ordered the Hungry Man special but substituted the pancakes for french toast. The owners were very polite and kind. They even have delivered my meal to my car. The portion was very good. The home fries were nicely cooked and crispy (not soggy like other places).

First time eating at this restaurant, the food portion is good, the food is normal, coffee is off, too watery. Service was great. Just when we pay the bill, the front desk just punched in the amount himself, this guy put in $1.85 for each coffee but actually I ordered with combo, should’ve be $1 each. So I pointed out and he then changed. So I’m wondering what if people did not see the amount he put in, they will pay more for sure. Because there is no receipt giving out of what we ordered so people can’t check. Be Cautious ⚠️of this part since I saw most ppl who eat here are older people.

We stopped in here on our way back to Barrie and had the BEST breakfast we've had in a long time! They kindy packaged it in a box for us as we were taking it with us. ( Juice too!) Everything was perfect, cooked exactly as requested and there was plenty of food!! Could not have asked for a better meal, and the price was beyond reasonable. Thank you so much 💕

Good diner breakfasts at reasonable prices 😀 On 4/21/2022 service was excellent. We continue to have breakfast at Mel's on a regular basis 🍳☕😋

Not sure what all of the hype is about.... The service was really good, but the food was not impressive in any way, and the diner itself didn't feel very clean. I would not go again.

Amazing diner food that's affordable! Full of regular customers who just keep coming back for more! It has a very family friendly atmosphere! If you go often enough the owners will even start to know you by name! It's my favourite breakfast spot.

Great pancakes. I had the big breakfast, not sure of the actually name at the restaurant for it but the typical big breakfast combo.

The service was quick and efficient, food was hot and served timely. it was a little greasy for me but that's to be expected. The pancakes knocked it out of the park, screaming hot, fluffy, with the nice added touch of butter on top which saved me from having to open those little packets of butter as I'm not the biggest fan of that.

They allowed me to switch to all sausage rather than the ham/bacon which was nice and my instructions for crispy home fries was followed (this is rare)

The price was the best price for this sort of meal that I've seen around $8, extreme value by comparison.

I will definitely go again, although I wish they would reconfigure the seating as it doesn't feel like the best use of space

Best breakfast place ever. Excellent service, amazing home fries. Never been disappointed. You can really tell that the owners take pride in their business.

Excellent Food, service, and atmosphere. I have been eating breakfast at Mel's Dinor for over 10 years. It is excellent food, always prepared perfect, and an excellent price. I have overheard customers saying it is always consistent. The service is excellent. You will always get the one or two customers who just like to complain. It is just there nature, The Restaurant has a family atmoshphere. You should really check it out. You will not be disappointed. Great food, at a great price and excellent service.

Serving ill prepared food. On Saturday November 5, 2011 I went for breakfast at Mels dinner. I have eaten there prior with no issues. This time I ordered Eggs Benedict as it is one of my favorite meals. After being served my meal I went to take a bite of the Hollandaise sauce and noticed it was ice cold. I caught the attention of the usual Saturday morning blond haired waitress and advised her my Hollandaise was not hot or at least even warmed up. She advised in not so many words this was normal, the cook puts cold hollandaise on the eggs and it warms up from the heat of the eggs. Well for me, having eaten eggs benedict at a number of other establishments this is not normal preparation for hollandiase sauce, it's sort of gross actually and told her I didn't want the meal and would order something different. I instead ordered ham and eggs over easy. The same waitress returned a short time later with my new meal. While placing my meal on the table she advised that no other customer had ever complained about the way the eggs benedict was served and I wasted a whole meal because of my complaint. You have to understand Mels is quit a tiny place and her comments to me were definately overheard by other patrons in the establishment. Her comments were most definately out of order too. Who is she to dress me down because I refused to eat and then pay ill prepared food or take the chance the cook scraped off the hollandaise sauce nuked it and reserved me the same bad meal. As for the other customers not complaining about this, that's there stupidity. Hollandaise sauce is served hot over hot eggs, not cold as this can cause the sauce to curdle. It's simple modular phsics and the norm to serving it. Something both the waitress and the cook need to learn. So in finishing, I waisted 2 meals that morning. I held my head high and walked out after giving my own dressing down to the waitress. And then I went to Cora's and thoroughly enjoyed my eggs benedict with hot hollandaise sauce. So yes to the waitress, I did have a nice day!
