Had the great pleasure of trying this place out with my husband...and what a treat! We immediately chose the Omakase Experience. Amazing! Some menu items were definitely unique. Absolutely delicious! The chefs take pride in their work and the quality shines in their presentation and taste. The interior is cozy and inviting. There are limited tables so make sure you call ahead for a reservation or come in early for dinner. My husband and I are now loyal customers.
came after work on a grey Friday. We were the only ones at the restaurant when we started. It's on Davis drive. Right where all the construction is. It's hard to get to, I came from the west and had to do a u turn to get to the driveway.
We had been there before and had gotten the omakase then and based on how great it was decided to get it again.
It's pricy at $65. Okay maybe not in Toronto but for sure in Newmarket.
It's great Sushi. Nice and fresh. Loved the taste of everything, you can tell that the person preparing the food is skilled and really cares about what they are doing.
We weren't rushed, in fact it was a bit slow, but I'd rather wait a bit rather than have them standing there staring at us.
The only downside, they tried to up sell us something that actually came in the regular menu. Which was weird.
Also, the place could use a good scrub, the floors are filthy. But the food preparation parts that we could see are immaculate.

Maybe its because I'm in love with Japanese culture or maybe its because I'm a sushi snob, but this is the most authentic Japanese experience you can find for the price, north of the GTA.The proprietor, Joe (or Jo), is a wonderful man and he cares deeply for his job, which doubles as his passion. He creates everything with care, precision and love, which can be seen in his rolls and his sashimi; this is arguably the best sashimi you can find anywhere and not just in quality, but in size. The only real complaint is the small selection of menu options... but that is easily made up by the quality and presentation of the food. The restaurant is small and quaint, but has all the makings of a small Japan... save for the music; chopstick holders, proper chopsticks and "place mats," not to mention REAL wasabi... Just pure awesome. Stop by if you can, its easy to miss!
A northern gem. I was lucky to be introduced to Solo Sushi Ya a good many years ago by a friend in the culinary industry, and after close to ten years of frequenting Jyo and the ever changing gang at Solo, it is still one of the best places to get great sushi and more.
Wether you decide on the usual suspects you can find most anywhere, the real treats at Solo are the "new" items which have recently been added to their menu which were once secret treasures. The smoked mackerel, the pork belly, amongst others are delectable! The omakase may not be as extravagant as other restaurants in the city may have on offer, (re: Akasaka) it is still one of the best, freshest meals you can get in the city at a modest price point.
Jyo's passion for his trade is as evident as ever. His banter and culinary advice is always appreciated. Thanks for many many years of consistent service, and here's to many more Jyo san!

Fantastic!. The great thing about Solo Sushi-Ya is that the fish is very fresh. Also the menu is unique and very yummy. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone - especially seafood lovers.
Great Local Sushi. We went on a Monday and were one of two tables. We were catered to and the freshness of the sushi was amazing. Our server was very kind and offered some great saki-pairing suggestions - thank you.

Indecisive eater? No problem!. I am an adventurous, open-minded, food allergy-free eater. I often find myself with a bit of a dilemma when dining out; and that is that everything on the menu piques my interest, so making a decision can be difficult sometimes. The omakase is great because someone else (specifically, the chef) chooses for me. It's a nice departure, on top of the food being very fresh and delicious. The place is clean and intimate, with the focus being on the quality, preparation and presentation of the food. I fell in love with saba (mackerel) sashimi at this place because it was so fresh.
It's worth the trek up to Newmarket! We ordered the omakase and loved every bit of it. Really enjoed the authentic and inventive dishes. It was nice to chat with the chef also.
Absolutly amazing!! Five star cuisine. Best sushi in all of Ontario
Wonderfully Authentic. We drove a long way to get here, and it was worth it. Everything was fresh and delicious, it was simple and well made. You wont find extravagant rolls here, but what you do find is amazing sushi with a very natural feel. I plan to return to try the omakase menu as I have heard great things!
The omakase menu ($58) presents six courses (the first course consisting of three dishes) and offers a variety of cooking methods (raw, steamed and braised). It’s heavily seafood focused with the only taste of beef for the night being presented in the first course. To start we were offered a trio of small dishes.
Starting from the left: The first dish was a piece of simply prepared sweet squash, its softness contrasted well with the natto (fermented soybeans) that accompanied it. The beans had an interesting chewy texture and were somewhat sticky
Let me start off by saying that the fish they serve was very fresh and pleasant, the fish itself was a 5 star. However, the sushi rice was too soft and mushy to my liking. Therefore I have to deduct one star. Also, for a Bento that's over 51 dollars it just contained normal fish like salmon, tuna and yellow tail. No uni, or sweet shrimp, or anything out of the ordinary. Although the tuna was blue fin so I won't deduct a point on that.
Unassuming little restaurant in sleepy Newmarket. But wow! So fresh sushi. Blue fin tuna maguro and toro in season - such a treat and so delicious. Biggest special makis I've ever eaten. Stewed pork belly was scrumptious. Tempura was light and crispy. Agedashi tofu another winner. Takoyaki was ok but really you are there for the sushi. Definitely need to come back and eat more sushi! Great reviews and did not disappoint.
Not an AYCE, polar opposite! You get an intimate setting with a skilled staff and real Japanese style food. Cannot be beat in terms of quality and authenticity. Love this place!
I've eaten here twice and each time was heavenly. Everything we ate was absolutely delicious, beautifully presented, and served quickly and politely. It's worth every penny. As great sushi demands, all flavours were clean and light, with delightful little pops of texture (e.g. roe) and fizz (wasabi). Please support this wonderful restaurant!
Some of the freshest sushi I've had. Owner is super polite and friendly. I was super happy with my mean. I'll be coming back and doing the omakase
I have been having sushi for 10 years in many places. I had the best experience here. Best food, very kind owner, chef and waiter. Amazing!
This place is worth its weight in gold. Every single item I've tried from them has been quality, and cooked or prepared perfectly. From the chicken Katsu to the karagge, to the fresh fish and seafood, to their salads and more - I would take anyone to this place, knowing they would be satisfied.
This is a favorite spot of mine that has delicious and authentic Japanese food! The chef is so kind and he's a delight to talk to. The restaurant has such a cozy and welcoming feel to it as well.
The food here is so good and I'm always pleased by the quality of it! I'll definitely be coming back; I love this place!
