This place is exquisite and unique. In a world of new restaurants and so much variety is cuisine often times it's the same space these institutions are competing for but this restaurant is one of its kind in this area. The owner is there often times meeting and greeting the patrons. The meat platter is the best dish in my opinion and pairs well with the Czech beer or tap.
Went for Dinner with four of us. Food was incredible and fast. Ordered the platter for one, beef goulash, beef stroganoff and the vegetarian meal and everything was fantastic, including some of the best dumplings around. Amanda our server was funny and friendly. Owner came out and talked to us after the meal and was very nice. Great experience
Great place to eat, staff are lovely and everyone had a fabulous meal and we were not rushed out at all. Nice leisurely dinner out.
We went for the first time for dinner last night and Wow! It won't be our last. Food was excellent, service was top shelf. We definitely recommend the place. It's busy for a reason, so make a reservation
Absolutely loved it! I think I will become a regular there from now on. The waitresses were very friendly and attentive. I love the menu and food options, it made me feel like I was back in Europe again! They cooked the Schnitzel the authentic way. Just like I had it in Vienna. You get what you pay for if you value Quality!
Thank you for an amazing dinner experience. No doubt I will be back shortly! :-)
It was my first visit to the Goulash House, but definitely not my last! The food was delicious and the ambiance on the patio made for a lovely summer night out. I absolutely recommend a visit!
This is one of my favourite restaurants in York region! The food is spectacular and the service is even better! If you want a great and authentic Hungarian meal you have to go! Now thinking it's been too long and I've gotta go back!
We enjoyed the food, atmosphere, and our server. Glad we stumbled along Main St and found it. We would definitely go again.
Great food & atmosphere. The perfect place to go if you are looking for an alternative to the big chains with European flare! Bring your appetite as the portions are big but so delicious!
Amazing food, lovely staff....great night out. Would highly recommend
Just went for dinner again to this amazing place....great food, great service, a little taste of home, if u want great food well this is the place, may never eat out anywhere else again, how could any other place live up to this.
Our favourite place to eat!! Always good and fresh food. No other place like it around.
Always friendly staff. Portions are incredible and the meals are prepared with passion. Great meals and service every time we drop in.
Pretty pretty close to European food. The schnitzel was excellent. Thumbs up ! And a „Danke schön“ from Germany
Great good! Cozy restaurant! Wonderful owner and staff!

The food is excellent. Love the meat platter. The apple strudel was outstanding.
Service was great, food was great, location is great. Will definitely be back!
Located on main Street newmarket. Right where all the action is.
On street parking and green P parking behind the building and a huge lot behind the buildings across the street.
It's pretty. They have big windows and if you sit in them you can see all the action happening on Main Street.
We came at lunch. There's a lunch menu. Prices run from 8-13 not too bad. Portions were pretty good for lunch sized.
I had the lacso. It's soft green peppers in a red sauce with dumplings. I'm not sure why I got it, but I'm glad I did. It was delicious. I'd get it again. Everyone liked their food. The goulash looked and smelled amaZING. The person who got it liked it a lot so I think it's another item to try!
Service was great. Our server was attentive, made sure we had everything we needed and made great food recommendations.
I'll definitely be back!
The Goulash House is located right on Main St in Newmarket. The Goulash House can be found right across the street from the Maid's Cottage and it stands on the corner of another street so the window views inside the restaurant are as good as it gets for this quaint little town. The restaurant is very intimate and nice inside. We came for dinner so the ambiance of the whole place was very romantic and quiet, which we enjoyed.
We weren't really hungry (a first), so we opted with getting small plates to share. We ordered the mini goulash, fried mushroom caps, and a cabbage roll, all of which could be found on their "Appetizers" portion. It says appetizers but these were easily meals that could have passed for entrees! The mini goulash was a nice big bowl of stew consisting of beef chunks simmered with vegetables, potatoes, and mini dumplings. The beef chunks were so tender and meaty while the mini dumplings tasted fresh. I loved each individual part, but I wish they simmered together slowly together longer so that they could all be infused into this small melting pot, but it was still so good.
The cabbage roll with the sauerkrat was OK. The cabbage roll had a nice crunch to it, surprisingly, but held the meat inside so well. The ground meat inside was a tad dry and I wish it was more juicy and fatty. The fried mushroom caps were surprisingly very good. They were lightly breaded and the house made tartar sauce they used was my favorite! I spread that sauce on some of the cabbage roll as well.
Our server was fantastic. The guy always seemed to show a genuine smile and was helpful in guiding us as to what to order. The prices are not bad at all and portion sizes are of no issue. Definitely disappointed not to have gotten an entree as those giant meat platters looked like exactly something I need to order. I'm not sure how it is during the day, but at night with the light music, giant window seating, candlelights, and older decor, it definitely is a great place to bring a date.....to enjoy a giant meat platter with...of course.
We visited The Goulash House on a Wednesday evening in December. A reservation was not required, but is advisable on weekends. The sole server on duty was excellent. He was knowledgeable, experienced, and attentive without being intrusive. We ordered the platter for two (see photo) and then shared a Somlói Galuska (see photo) over coffee. (See the menu and photos on The Goulash House Web site. The photos there don't lie.)
The food was superb. We wouldn't order the platter for two again, because although everything was excellent it was more meat than we are accustomed to. Our only quibbles were that the coffee could have been hotter, and in the winter one's enjoyment would be diminished by cold draughts each time the front door is opened.
I have been to the Goulash house a few times now. So I think its safe to say I would give them a 3.5 overall.
Don't bother calling them for reservations since they will never pick up the phone. After trying numerous times to make a reservation, we just decided to try our luck. I have seen them turn people away towards 9pm even though they close at 10pm. So we came earlier to improve our chances of getting in. We were standing at the door for about 5 mins to get seated. I was positive the waiters saw us but none of them approached us. After a few minutes they said we would have to wait for their manager. So we waited and I had half a mind to leave and go next door to hungry brew hops or the bucket co.
Thankfully we got seated in the next couple of minutes and the experience improved quite a bit from there since the food was fantastic! Although I don't know if it is really authentic but I sure can say they serve some delicious fare here. Their portion sizes for the mains are huge. My dinner entree was good for lunch the next day. I had the jager schnitzel. It was wonderful with a creamy mushroom sauce on top. I also got a bite of the beef goulash and chicken schnitzel which my friends had ordered. Everything was perfect. If you like your schnitzel crunchy order the ones without sauce as it makes them a bit soggy.
The ambiance was nice both for a date and a family dinner. 4.5 stars for the food and ambiance but I do have to take one star off for the service. After all it is as important as a good meal!
Amazing service, nice atmosphere, homemade tasting food, big portions, decent wine and drink menu, affordable pricing. I would recommend and go back.
Really great food and service. Place is very nice too. We'll be back for sure.
I loved it.... A week ago I was in Newmarket for business. My business partner invited me to the Goulash House. When we went in, the staff was very pleasant and helpful.
I love Hungarian food, so I chose the goulash soup and chicken paprikash. It was wonderful! I highly recommend this restaurant.
Outstanding!. I was expecting a good lunch experience but this exceeded my expectations. The goulash soup was so hearty with tender chunks of beef and a rich beef broth, great to soak the bread in. The chicken paprikash was also good, dumplings with chicken in a nice light paprika sauce. Tasty without being too heavy. I had no room for dessert but will definitely leave room for the apple streudel next time. Service was also above average!
From the owner... We are Fine Hungarian Cuisine ,casual dining playing Mike Oldfield, Enigma in the background. Please check out our well loved home made menu at

Thank you for all the reviews!

Well worth the wait.. We first noticed the Goulash House while walking on Main Street last fall. We thought it looked like a spot worth trying. Of course we promply procrastinated and forgot all about it. Valentines provided the excuse and although it took us a while it was worth the wait.
Being Valentines it was very full but in spite of the crowd the service was excellent and timely. Although busy we never felt rushed and even with the crowd we didn't feel cramped. Though busy the service staff were terrific. All in all an excellent ambiance.
The house wine was an Argentinian Malbec, very reasonably priced and a great companion to the red meat medley meal that we enjoyed.
The meal we chose was the wooden board platter for two. Probably not the healthiest choice but what the heck it tasted great and there was lots of it.
We left feeling very full but very happy with our entire experience. We will certainly return but unlike our first visit this time we will not procrastinate.
Excellent food great service. Very friendly lots to choose from on the menu to fit every budget. European cuisine done great.
Wonderful staff and food! Amazing!. My husband and I had an amazing experience at The Goulash House on Sunday! We went for lunch. I had the soup as my starter and it was impeccable! Best soup I have ever had in a restaurant. My husband had the cabbage rolls which were also amazing. I had the Beef Goulash as my main and my husband had the Wooden House Platter. The meat was so moist, flavourful, and tender. The presentation was thoughtful and impressive, unlike anything I've seen. We tried the Crepe Gundel for dessert, which is a crepe with rum-soaked walnuts and then flambeed. Very impressive and delicious! Our server was Zoltan who was very friendly and helpful. Definitely try this place! Can't wait to go back.
Great Date!!!!!!. .....just got back from taking my new girlfriend to The Goulash House on Main St. Newmarket. I can't begin to say enough good things about this restaurant. I was greeted by the personable hostess immediately upon entering and was promptly taken to a "romantic table for two". The wait staff was friendly and extremely helpful explaining the vast array of food they offered on their menu. We had never had traditional Hungarian food and she suggested the "Wooden Platter" which was a sampling of a variety of tasty treats. Both of us were extremely happy with the appetizers, the wine and mostly the delicious meal. Prices were very fair. All in all.....a wonderful experience and highly recommended!
Fantastic food. The schnitzel was amazing. Best restaurant I have been to in Newmarket. Can't wait to go back.
Newmarkets best kept secret. Just returned from having dinner at the Goulash House in Newmarket.....service was impeccable...food is to die for....the portions are unbeliveable and so, so good...
For an establishment that has only been opened 5 months, they are certainly doing things the right way.....
If you go, be sure you have a big appetite...........
Would recommend it. We thought the food was excellent; presentation was excellent. The place was clean and the staff were pleasant. Creemore is on tap.
Wonderful food. Great ambience. Everything about this restaurant is simply wonderful. Can't wait to go back...
Service was very good. The food was very tasty. First time we were there the food came out a little slower then expected. The second time there food came out on time and the way it should. Would go back for sure. Best dishes so far are chicken paprikash, wiener and chicken schnitzel and get the dumplings they are the best.
Went here for dinner last week, amazing food, very friendly staff and reasonably priced. It's the only Hungarian food outside of toronto and I really enjoyed it. Will deffenitly be returning
The goulash was served in a hot kettle and consisted of beef, carrots, potatoes, and dumplings (nokedli). The chunks of beef were incredibly tender! The carrots and potatoes were very soft and flavourful, and the dumplings were delicious. Serving the goulash in the kettle is a great idea since it keeps the stew warm. Th
...every bit the hearty, delicious dish I know. A rich, thick, yet delicate flavoured gravy with chunks of tender beef shank swimming in it is poured over Nokedli and served in a kettle. The hint of caraway and paprika gently flavour the dish. It’s somewhere between soup and stew. Quite frankly, it’s simply incredible and would be the best thing
A local restaurant located in Main St. Newmarket, The Goulash House is a must visit if you’re looking to try delicious Hungarian food 🤩 The menu is accessible through a QR code, and once you’re ready, you just let the server know. We ordered the Beef Goulash and Schnitzel on a Bun (you can choose between chicken or pork), and both took roughly 10-15 minutes to arrive. I loved the Beef Goulash, it was very flavourful and there were a lot of tender chunks of beef shanks in it too. I would say it’s the perfect comforting meal to have on a cold winter day! The Schnitzel on a Bun was also very nice, the buns were soft and the chicken was nicely battered too. It’s made similar to a katsu but it’s much thinner, less flakier and definitely didn’t taste as oily. Try dipping abit of the bread in the Goulash, it’s a great combination 😉 The Schnitzel on a Bun also came with fries and I loved how it was nicely seasoned as well! We definitely had leftovers as the portions were quite generous.
Would I recommend visiting this local spot? Absolutely!

We had a lovely diner there. Friendly staff and fantastic food made our visit to Newmarket quite special.
The restaurant has a cozy vibe and seemed quite a popular option for the locals. Big portions so bring your containers!
We visited this place with a group of 12 pre- arranged by reservation. The food was outstanding with large portions(so that you could enjoy it again at home)! The food was authentic Hungarian cuisine, and delicious. We had excellent and friendly service. I highly recommend this restaurant!
Here’s what I ordered:
Wooden Platter for 2
Mini Goulash
Stroganoff
Apple Strudel
Not an ounce of regret for any dish. What a treasure we found and a delightful staff that is helpful and friendly. I’ve been to Budapest and the food is identical. Loved it and will come back!
I was meaning to come to this restaurant for a long time and finally came for my birthday with my family. I definitely wasn't disappointed! The food was awesome! I shared a platter for two with my wife and it was more than enough. My family ate different items on the menu and everyone was happy with their meal. Portion size is huge and the meats were super tender. Their cabbage rolls tasted great as well. Service was great as well and everyone was nice.
My only regret is not coming here sooner and I would definitely come back here again.
We were in the area and did not know what to eat.. then we saw this gem.
Food is delicious!! Portion is awesome and service, despite the owner being alone, was great.
The Joiko soup is out fantastic... The old castle pork was good but not exactly what I expected... Then we finished with a awesome cheese strudel...
A friend ordered the schnitzel Jager and her review is that it was delicious...
I am coming back for sure....
We ordered the mini goulash, cabbage roll, and jager schnitzel. Everything was absolutely amazing, the flavour combinations were phenomenal. Also HUGE portions - just like in Hungary! The service was super quick and the lady we spoke to was so friendly :) I'm so happy this place exists; we will definitely be back!
