Review Hops A Northwest Pub - New Westminster

Blake Thibault
service was stellar patio was clean and comfy bathrooms were spotless decent/ok beer selection decent daily specials food was over priced and too small a portion in my opinion (calamari) food quality was ok/decent i would go back, but it wouldn't be my first choice. i would give 3.5 stars if i was allowed, I feel a little guilty only giving 3

I was refused service so my group had to go somewhere else. Our server was quite in-flexable about having my physical ID for the vax card check, as opposed simply having the ID on my phone. Even though the bartender could vouch for who I was and that, and even though I had been there 100's off times before. I understood... But was very disappointed.

We visited this pub a few times, usually in summer to be seated on their patio area. It offers quite a decent list of beverages. I found their choice of IPAs to be a bit weak, but after pandemic re-opening, they introduced Mariner IPA to the list, and it's a game-changer for me. Service is slow at times, mainly because the place is packed, and there's only one waitress, but it's bearable. We never went past appetizers, but I can tell that wings are good, and mozzarella triangles are nice when cheese stays inside, which doesn't happen always, and you get triangles with no cheese inside. Also, I'm not sure if it's a post-pandemic measure, but now the kitchen closes at 8 pm. For us, somehow missing the last kitchen call, it was the end of the night. One other thing that I really liked, which is not available anymore in COVID-19 reality for very obvious reasons, is that they used to have a popcorn machine where patrons could get a free popcorn – it's genius. I can't say that this pub is perfect, but they are trying to be so, and I can see why many locals like it. Give it a try.

The bartender was cheery and good even though it was busy. An eclectic group of patrons makes it a good stop for people watching lol

I understand there’s a bit of troubles going on with the world and it’s affected businesses everywhere, but the sheer neglect of customer service at this establishment is horrendous. No “hey how are you, sorry we’re waiting for tables to open up and serve you” just “we’re full “ I don’t want to comment on the dudes weight, health or standard of hygiene but you can tell no one is going to be painting any pictures of him any time soon. Get better.

Very nice atmosphere. Great place to grab a drink before heading home on the skytrain. Jeff the bartender is very friendly and makes you feel good. Also very knowledgeable on drinks and stuff and very informative on the stuff. Very fun times cause of the regulars and the bartenders

Drinks and food are pretty good. There's only one staff that looked like she was done for the day that almost didn't want to cater to a big group (she cleaned the table left by customers before us). The other staff that continued to serve us is pretty nice otherwise so we still felt valued afterwards.

Decent food. Great deal on wings on Thursday and they're tasty. Easily accessible by skytrain within few steps away. Friendly staff.

The crowd is iffy and the food is good, but $7-8 for a pint kinda sucks, especially in this part of town. The beers are good too, but my fave food item (unfortunately I ate them all before snapping a pic) are the cheesesteak minis. They're like cheesesteak spring rolls!

I've visited Hops Pub twice now and I'll begin by saying although the pub is located in a curious location deep beneath the New West Skytrain station, the service and food has been excellent.
On our first visit we ordered the nachos which were top notch. Big chips layered with loads of cheese and other goodies.
On our second visit the nachos were not as good.
The real hit for me was their deep fried dill pickles. Dills with a strong snappy dill pickle flavour with a crisp cornmeal coating. I loved it.
We also shares a heap of wings which were a little too heavily sauced (maybe that was because of the type we chose). However, the wings were really meaty little things.
Overall, the food was really good and the service was great. We will definitely return to Hops Pub.

Small but great. I'm new to the area but I like puns. Being from the Kootneys I love this pub. It's got that cozy small pub feel but the trendy craft beer selection you find down here. I have gone several times with a few friends and the food is always excellent and staff has been great. They have a great burger selection.

Overall it's a great "little" pub. In a big city.

This place sucks. Over priced and the food is bland. They try way too hard to be a caddy trendy place but they fall real short. Pick what you want to be. A pub or a classy restaurant. You can't be both. Also the regulars that go here are unbearable to listen too.

Great food and beer. This place is a gem tucked away in New Westminster. The inside is nicely done with a patio and fireplace. Service was great and the beer selection was to die for so many craft beers I have never tried or heard of and made it even better that the waitress had a very good knowledge of the beers. I had the brisket sand which and it was good and worthy to be on drivers, diners and dives Guy Fieri would say the sand which is out of bounds. The fries were also very good. My wife ordered the jerk chicken and the sand which could have used more spice. I would go back

One of the best pubs ever. First of all this pub is transit accessible off the skytrain. The staff are amazing and super friendly along with their great service! They have a wide selection of craft beer and delicious food too! This place is more in the 95% range!

Been here 3 times now.... ..enough to give a fair review. To summarize,

Decent menu, lots of delicious options, but nothing health conscious and nothing for vegetarians. The burgers are killer, the side-salad abysmal. Just iceberg lettuce, basically. Fries so-so.

The place isn't very big and fills up FAST.

The beer selection is impeccable.

Its a great location, so central and what New West station needed.

The service is a bit slow.

Myself and my boyfriend have tried to dine here on more than one occasion and are always incredibly disappointed by the service. The male bartender who currently works there is this place's only saving grace. All of the servers and someone who seemed to be the owner have repeatedly displayed poor service and a nonchalant attitude.
Most times when we go in, we are ignored for at least ten minutes. Once we were served by the owner of the public, or the female manager, and after she brought out our food, she proceeded to sit down and socialize with a nearby table and ignore us for the rest of the meal. We weren't offered drink refills, weren't asked how our food was, and we had to go over to the table she was sitting at to ask for our bill.
Both my boyfriend and myself have worked in the restaurant industry for years (me, eleven years, him, 13), and all I can say is that this pub unfortunately has some of the worst service I have ever encountered anywhere.

Horrible Service! Worst ever, in fact.

To be fair, I've been to this pub 4 times now and every time the service has been the worst I've ever had. Not an exaggeration at all. To me, I would rather a pub with excellent service and mediocre food, than a pub with excellent food and mediocre service. But I don't even remember the food, because the service was so bad.

It's really a shame, because the location is so good. It would be nice to have a pint after or before a movie here. Which is exactly why I went. I will walk the extra block and go to The Paddlewheeler instead. The service there is good and you get a nice view of the harbour.

I will not be going back to Hops. I'm also spreading the word about this pub to my friends. DO NOT GO HERE!

Easy location to get to before or after a movie, food that's better than you might expect for the price and an awesome staff. Could use a little variety on breakfast/brunch but I understand it's a pub after all.

I luv the food and the staff!. It is small any comfy. There menu is overall some of the best pub food ive had ever cuz it doesnt taste like pub food. Please try there goganzola mac n cheese with short ribs in it!!!! It is one of the best things ive ever tasted!! I overall rate them for food drinks and staff a 9 1/2.

Good brews, service and location.. Cool pub, but need to expand the menu.

This is a block from where we live and is 2 floors below the movie theatre where we were headed afterward for a late movie. For a Saturday night it seemed to be doing well, there was only one table available when we walked in without a reservation and plenty of people were seated at the bar. It seemed lively with conversation and upbeat pop filling the room. Several people walked in and had to leave for lack of room. Despite the liveliness and nice microbrews on tap, the food menu is really disappointing with a serious lack of options for vegetarians. It is obvious that the staff & owners are fine leaving out this large portion of the population, and it really saddens me as I'd likely frequent it as a regular if there were options outside of the average nacho plate, a simple garden salad (the other 2 salad options are meaty) and pretzels. Not even a lame veg burger appears on the menu, & look our for the grilled cheese sandwich, which contains short ribs. I'd really like to say that the place is great, but until they cater to the local foodie pub goers such myself more sensitively I can't give them a "like". As for the nachos, I am still waiting for a New West pub to step up their game & make it a challenge to the legendary nacho plates of Foundation in East Van (whose prices are even better!).

If a place is called Hops, you'd think they would know better than to serve beer with a frozen glass. That being said, the selection is decent (Crannog!). Food is ok - nothing I've had stands out as great. I'll return for beer but will have to request a non-frosted glass.

Completely renovated, nice dark decor and just the right ambience for us. Not huge, so may be busy at peak times.

Had a delicious (huge) burger done just right. Onion rings needed a bit more seasoning. Wife had some honey garlic wings which were good too.

Will definately be back for a quick bite and a beer!

Good beer, mediocre everything else.. I'm confused - the beer list and food descriptions make it seem like this place is a hipster hangout, but the in-booth TVs showing sports (which you can't turn off - bring a sweater to cover it) and the top 40 pop music kind of wreck the vibe. Crannog Ales on tap? Cool! Wilty iceberg lettuce salad with unripe tomatoes in the peak of summer veggie season? Not cool! I suggest these guys pick their shtick, because I would probably have been less disappointed if I thought that I going to a hole-in-the-wall sports bar rather than the indie beer joint that I was expecting.

Food 4 Thought. Had a delicious pulled pork sandwich there. I think I recognize the taste being similar to a local specialist in BBQ.

Didnt even let me sit down because i was wearing work clothes. Pretty rediculas this is new west not the west end. I will not be coming back even after work. Will be advising my friends and family in new west not to go to this pretencious pub.

Overall, I really enjoyed the meal. The burger was fulfilling, balanced nicely, and went great with a pint of beer. I look forward to going back here and trying other items on the menu.

I left with mixed feelings about Hops. I will definitely return when the movie theatre opens, and I will probably enjoy my food and brew when I do. But all the televisions are a turnoff for me. And maybe it makes me a pub snob, but I just don’t feel the same way about a pub when I see a dedicated TV screen for Keno and a pull-tab machine. The pub is only two weeks old, so new it’s still listed as “coming soon” on Tag Pubs’ website and at the time I first published this review it didn’t yet have a listing on Urbanspoon. I plan to give it some time to grow on me, and I would recommend trying it out for yourself. Let me know what you think if you do!
