Review Tora Sushi - New Westminster

Chris O'Callaghan
This place will definitely be in my top five sushi places for sure. The quality of the food is excellent for the price, they gave tons of soy sauce and ginger (extra is always a plus!), and the staff were friendly and service was quick. Oh, and all the rolls are cut into even slices for easy sharing. I’ll definitely be getting takeout here again.

Tried this restaurant for the first time today. Ordered a few rolls for take out and they were really good and the price was cheap. I only interacted with staff for a minute, but they were super nice. I recommend giving this place a try.

This was probably the worst sushi place I’ve ever eaten. The waitress was very rude and they weren’t busy at all when we got there. Very dismissive and looked at us like we were stupid. The rolls were messy & the sashimi was disgusting. Not edible at all. It looked like it had been sitting out for a few days. Idk what these other 5 star reviewers are but I wish I got that.

Got bento box 2 (veggie - veg tempura, veg gyoza, sunomono salad, half avocado roll, half yam tempura roll) and a deep fried California roll. Service was definitely good 4/5. Food was good as well 4/5. Wish the deep fried California roll had spicy mayo on it or something like that. Ah for it if you go here. Cute, clean little place. If you like sushi, need a quick bite, and nothing fancy then this should work well for you. Did for me. Would recommend and would also come back.

Sushi was decent. Friend had a hard she'll in his first bite. Not the best start to a meal. Food came quick and the staff were friendly. Good prices as well. $10 per person for lunch

Tora Sushi is one of the many food establishments located in the Queensborough Landing area of New Westminster. I stopped by one day in August and noticed that it’s fairly busy during the lunch hour. It seems like everyone is offering aburi sushi lately (flame-seared) and Tora Sushi is no different. They have a limited number of items that they offer as aburi and I wound up ordering the Toro Aburi and Salmon Aburi nigiri ($2.75 per piece) along with Unagi and Chopped Scallop nigiri ($2.75 per piece and $2.50 per piece respectively). I found that they were a bit too aggressive with the torch on the aburi pieces (as you can probably see in the picture). This took away from the enjoyment of what probably would have been fairly good toro and salmon. I also noticed that the sashimi in these aburi pieces fell off the rice rather easily. I found that the chopped scallop had a good amount of scallop in it but the nigiri had a bit too much rice. These types of nigiri pieces are difficult to eat in more than one bite due to the seaweed wrap so I usually like to eat them in one bite. However, due to the amount of rice, it was a bit awkward. I actually enjoyed the unagi the best of my order as the eel was nice and tender and draped with unagi sauce. Although I wasn’t a fan of their aburi, I decided to come back the following week to try their sashimi to see if that was any better. The Chirashi Don ($13) came with 2 pieces of tamago, 1 piece of hokkigai, 1 piece of tako, 1 piece of sockeye salmon, 2 pieces of Atlantic salmon, 2 pieces of tuna, and 1 piece of toro on top of a large serving of rice (in addition to a serving of miso soup). The best of this dish were the salmon pieces. The thinly sliced tako was a bit squishy and I found a small partial bone in one of the tuna pieces (otherwise, the tuna was adequate). I wasn’t a big fan of the tamago as it was a bit too dense for my preferences. On my next visit, I decided to try their Assorted Sashimi ($14.50) which came with 2 pieces each of sockeye, salmon, tako, tuna, surf clam, and 1 piece of cooked ebi. The best pieces here were the salmon and hokkigai while the rest were just okay. I also ordered their Chicken Karaage ($4.95) which came with 5 pieces of boneless chicken (they also offer bone-in karaage which I think was basically chicken wings). The chicken pieces were relatively flat but light and crispy on the outside with the meat on the interior being a bit more chewy. A few months later I returned to order their Unagi Don ($11.95). This included 7 pieces of thin but pleasantly tasty unagi on rice. Similar to how we enjoyed this dish in Japan, the unagi don is presented in a covered box. I did enjoy the sauciness of this dish and how the contrasting texture of the crunchy pickled radish compared to the tender pieces of unagi. Tora also has a number of bento boxes available so I tried their Bento Box #1 ($10.95). It’s a fairly standard order that includes 2 skewers of yakitori, tempura, shredded radish/cabbage (?) salad, miso soup, and half order of California roll. Overall, the best part of this box was the California roll which was nicely formed and had a good amount of imitation crab-to-rice ratio. The yakitori was a bit too firm and dry (probably due to the cut of meat) and the tempura, while lightly coated, seemed too firm to the bite instead of being light and airy to the bite. For a small little Japanese spot in a factory outlet mall setting, the food’s not too bad with some items being better than others… best bet is to stick with the basics like their California roll, salmon sashimi, and unagi.

Walked by this place for almost 5 years going to Opa and always wondered how good it was, we’ll i took the plunge one day because my usual sushi places in New West changed ownership and the other one just went downhill so l needed another sushi place. It was my second time last night ( October 5th ) and the service has been outstanding! The prices are best I’ve seen and quality is great! I think I’ve found my new sushi place ☺️

Tiny portions for their special. All the food was... okay at best. Wasn't looking for spectacular, but it was incredibly disappointing and bland. Not worth it even for the discounted special price.

Very clean place, decent food and decent prices! Their specialty rolls all have great sauces and it's my go to place when I want a good meal!

I was chilling at friends house near walmart and we were thinking where to get food. She told me there's a jap restaurant near by so she took me here. I was quite hungry so I ordered 2 appetizers and 1 sushi roll. I had veggie gyoza , veggie corquette and gomae sushi roll. Food was great, service was good, not expensive.. not bad.. We brought our babies so they were quite noisy. The restaurant didnt complain to us but I felt bad .

Wow. The wife and I have been trying different sushi restaurants for quite some time now and this place is our favourite. I don't understand all the bad reviews....... But whatever each to there own all I can say is try it you may be as surprised as us. We've been back several times now and still number one in our books. Good job Toro

Awful sushi! They wrap all their rolls with more rice in the middle and cheap out on actual ingredients. Hence, you can only taste rice in all their rolls!!!

Not coming back.. This is one of the worst sushi places I've been... They put way too much rice on the rolls, that you can't taste what is inside. It feels like all you're eating is rice. Even their miso soup has a "fishy" taste to it. Their tea.... I don't even know if that's tea. It's just taste like hot water.

Definitely not coming back. For sure.

Service is the worst. I work on Annacis Island and we love Sushi but we hate going here to get it! The servers are absolutely horrible to deal with. Probably the rudest I've ever dealt with, and SO stingy on the soy sauce. With the amount of rolls we order at the office, I expect at LEAST 6 packs, but they give you one or two, and make you pay for more. It makes us not want to eat there ever so we typically go grab anything else.

Stingy with soy sauce. I work at Queensborough landing and I sometimes crave sushi, I sometimes wish there was another sushi place nearby though. The service is quick, but the servers never seem happy, and I always have to ask for extra soy sauce because they only ever give me two max. If I get a few sushi options, how does it make sense to only get 2 packs of soy sauce? So basically, the food is good, fast service etc, but the servers have attitude, and they're stingy with their soy sauce.

Meh. Way too expensive for the small portions they serve, service is pretty average as is the food. It's like they know they are the only sushi joint for miles - no need to step up to anything less than average.

Food great but little pricey

Fishy Fish. The sushi here is very hit or miss. Tuna should never smell or taste "fishy" and often times it does here. I ordered tuna and asked that it be fresh, when I got back home and tasted it, it was SO fishy...Now, I eat sushi from various places all the time and know how it should and should taste...I called them ( which I hardly ever do) to let them know (it was 15$ worth of tuna I threw out) and the chef began arguing me that it was fresh...regardless of weather or not its "fresh" the fish they are buying is obviously not high quality if it is that fishy tasting. CALI roll is fine...just DONT GET RAW FISH HERE!

Cashier gives.me attitude! Totally unacceptable. Gyoza is very salty. Tempura just looks like they were made few days ago! Not happy with this.

It's under new management. Used to be horrible but went today and it was good. So glad there is a new owner.

Horrible. This place is completely over priced and serves supermarket quality sushi. I tried the place twice just to make sure, and yes both times was awful.

First time eating here. Was not impressed. Drove right passed it. Sign is not lit. Go inside and order and the rediculous pricing for how little you get. Ordered the avo/yam/cali plus spicy salmon. Tiny peice of salmon , cold yam, fridge tasting avocado and next to nothing in the californa roll. The spicy salmon is. a 1.25 per peice... The hot sauce was just dribbled on top instead of being incorperated. And on top of it all a pitiful amount of ginger and stale wasabi and a broken takeout box. I work in restaurants. I know how cheap sushi is to make. ended up with close to 13 dollars. could go for decent all you can eat for that. Or even a beautiful fresh combo somewhere else.

i will never come back. My friends will not either. Quality and quantitiy across the board at all times because negativity spreads faster then positive.

Great again for the 2nd time. Stopped in for my second time and although there was no one else there I had a great sushi meal. The spicy tuna cone is on par with my favourite sushi place in Vancouver (Koko's on E. Hastings) and these are unbeatable typically. The sake sushi with wild sockeye was delicious and the miso soup excellent. Too bad Tora is in such a blah spot otherwise I would eat here more often.

Complete Disappointment. Was originally going to OPA, but by mistake walked into Tora Sushi. The place was so quiet. Anyways I decided I'd have sushi instead and ordered Option A which included 9 pieces (3 avacado, 3 yam, 3 california). They basically had the sushi pre-made. They just microwaved it and packed it for me to go. When I had them, I was very disappointed. It tasted old, and non-fresh. Next time I will make sure I don't ever walk into this place. Don't even understand why they are in business. They should lower the prices, make sushi fresh and in front of the customer. If they change their ways, they will do great.

What a rip off. When tora sushi first opened we would frequent it just cause it was the only Japanese place near by.. We decided to give it another try after a couple years of boycotting due to high prices and subpar sushi.. Well we were once again dissaponted. Gomae for $4 which wasn't even cooked properly. A bento box that had some kind of take on a dynamite roll. Chicken was cold and smothered in sauce. The rolls were very small and would never go back!!

All of the rolls were dry and flavorless i have to say i didnt tip because i was sad to pay for food that just disappoined so much so that at two times i almost gagged.
