Review Chronic Taco - New Westminster

BERNILA BAQUIRAN
you will feel super ripped off when get charged 13.5 for a cheese Quesadilla which probably cost one dollar to make. I understand that the cost of material is up and there are costs to run a business but almost 14 dollars for 4 pieces of bread and cheese???? No, I do not recommend this place.

We have visited this place twice their veggie tacos are very tasty and veggie rice bowl were also very good. One thing is a must try is their churros. They are crisp and sweet is perfect. Must try for their churros.

There is a strong reason why I am giving this place 5 stars as this place was not a 5 star location a couple years ago or for arguments sake, even a year ago. They have either gotten new ownership or changed their staff as one of the gentleman there, an East Indian male, is arguably one of the friendliest people I have met coming into a fast food restaurant. He is very kind and understanding, while working to make sure your meal is made to your perfection while going out of his way to ensure it is made that way. In fact, one time my partner forgot her wallet and was about to walk away when he said to her that it is fine and made her the meal and sent her on her way with a smile. Of course my partner went back the next day and paid for the meal - but it was this generosity that makes me want to come back. In terms of the food - we usually only buy bowls and so cannot speak beyond the quality of those. The bowls are great and we will continue to come here to enjoy them. I know others here are posted about the lack of quality in the other meals that may be made, however I cannot speak to those. Service - 5 star Bowls - 5 star Definitely will be returning.

The food taste and quality was only okay. The staff and general service is great, to be fair to them. Very friendly and helpful. However the portions are pretty meager considering how much it costs. Fajita veggies and guac are an extra $3 each so to have a decent burrito/burrito bowl including tip and tax it will end up costing almost $21. Absurd for what is effectively a mid-level chain

It's decent. Ordered the burrito bowl with Al Pastor and it was good, but nothing special, nor was the portion bigger than expected (good for one meal, nothing more) I'm 6'0 tall and I have a really regular appetite.

I would not recommend this place at all and I do not think I will ever return to this place. A few talked about how ripped off you feel and they are spot on. The tacos are not worth it at all, and especially the fish and shrimp... they charge extra $2 for a small finger sized fish and for some reason that is worth an extra $2. The rice seems old and beans are not worth it. Do not waste ur money on the fish or shrimp taco, its just a hard no. Even dinning in, the place had an awful smell to it.

A customers card declined before me and he swore he had money on it. Then mine declined twice. The manager came over and insisted his machine was working and I said it didn't work for me or the last guy that came in. I used a different card and it worked. He walked away smiling. I said that's rude of you and he screamed at me accusing me of treating all of the staff badly. I said that he shouldn't speak on behalf of others as I was not rude. The place has gone down hill since he started managing. Ice machine barely works or isn't in service. The manager is cheap with portions and rude. Headquarters contact line is not in service.BIG THUMBS DOWN.

The food was delicious! I ordered the 2 taco combo, baja-style. Employees were very helpful for our first time here and every informative. Will come back!

Was just here for the first time and told the lady that. She looked like she didn't care. Ordered a burrito and didn't Know how it worked. Thought it was like Taco Del Mar but I was wrong. Just kinda thrown together and fell apart as I was eating it. Didn't taste good either. I'll stick to Taco Del Mar.

Once you have Chronic Tacos, every other taco/burrito place is just....meh.

Well last night we ordered and they used SKIP THE DISHES as delivery drivers. We ordered 50 dollars worth in food, and live 10 minutes away. I was repeatedly told that it was skip the dishes fault for our food arriving an hour later, and that instead of having our order ready to be picked up, they forgot and had to help the customers in store first, before getting to our orders. My burrito arrived soggy and cold, as did the taco, and the mushy favourite fries. All of our food was thrown out. I was called by the manager, barely given the chance to talk, and was abruptly given a 10 dollar off option as the BEST WE CAN DO.Really? We have be patrons at your restaurant for a while, and always share with our friends, athletic teams, and coworkers what a great place it is for food, but now we will sadly be sharing this unfortunate experience with them. Skip the dishes finally showed up an hour later, the delivery driver had 3 of his friends in the car with him??? Shouldn't you guys know the protocols and employees of the third party you hired to be your partner? Very disappointing. Won't be coming back to redeem that $10 dollar off next time, as there will be no next time

The Burritos and Tacos are soo Good! Will be back again

burnt food! current management lacks ability to respond to complaints and offer refunds for hiring people who DO NOT know how to cook. the old management got the hiring part right in short time and knew how to respond with customer service. . this location is Dogshit

Love their food and service here ,just amazing :D ....Thank you :D

Similar concept to chipotle where you order at the front and you decide what you want to fill your tacos with. I usually get the chicken taco for a quick snack and it usually fills me up pretty well especially with all the veggies they pack inside. The salsa here is on the spicy side so beware!
SnowballEats
Love their tacos here! They have great hot sauce too. Place is not packed during dinner time and host is friendly. I just wish they could clean the bathroom more?
Yes. We,re Eating Again.
Chronic Taco is another one of those places that I've wanted to try for sometime. I realize that it borders on fast food but I think they're at least a step up aren't they? At any rate, I saw on their web site that they offered some vegetarian and vegan options so one lovely Sunday morning, I decided to try some tacos.I went to the New Westminster store which according to their web site opens at 9, according to Google opens at 10 and according to their sign on the door opens at 11 (heavy sigh). Somehow they appeared open at about 10:40 so I wandered in. It's a pretty hip space with counter service and seating options from booths to high tables to the bar. I liked it there! Counter order of course and they build your tacos and so on to order. The vegan option consists of rice and beans in either tacos, bowls, burritos etc. They also have some tempting carnivorous protein options but we're not talking about that this month! So I ordered my vegan taco. Rice and beans (which forms a complete protein if that's what you are worried about) along with some decent guacamole, jalapenos, tomato, lettuce etc.Not a bad little taco for 4 bucks. I also ordered a burrito. Not much different except for flour tortilla instead of corn...and wrapped of course. And I gave into the temptation of Crispy Taters. This feels a little too "Taco Time" to me but hey I am being good otherwise. Tasty little guys that I could make at home in the oven...and maybe I will. So Chronic Taco offers a basic vegan option without a lot of variation available. I prefer it to the A&W option as far as quick and easy is concerned and for my carnivorous friends, there is more decent chow to be had!

Tuesday taco night. We got there around 7:15pm and it was not too busy so we took our time to order. There's a 2ppl for $20 deal (4 tacos + 2 drinks, + 1 chips and 1 salsa), sound like a good deal so we picked that. 1 grill chicken on soft flour tortillas, 2 steak hardshell tacos, and 1 grilled pull pork hardshell taco. The best part was probably the various toppings that you can even pick all of them. Oh friendly reminder Mexican spicy hot sauce is very spicy ...not recommended unless you want sexy plump lips lol.

It's about as close to a SoCal taqueria as you can get here .
There's lots of authentic Mexican places in metro Vancouver now.
However if you crave that SoCal style of Mexican American food it's hard to find a good place. I saw this place a few weeks ago and decided to try it.
We both ordered one of their burritos my partner had a bean burrito I had the beef. The tortilla was fresh flavorful and really a nice texture. The rice had nice flavor and the beans beef ect all tasted quite good. I could taste all the ingredients and they all seemed fresh and complemented each other. I was pretty happy and we were both stuffed full by the end of it . The atmosphere seems kinda movie settish but, it works well.
Service is par for the course . You walk up order and take your, food,to your seat. You would be hard to find a place doing this style of,burrito in metrovancouver as good as chronic. It borderlines on magical but, the constraints of being a chain keeps it from perfection. Overall very good

They almost get it right. I really want to love this place because I love fish tacos and there are so few places around here that make them to order but they are so inconsistent except the service which is consistently mediocre. I have had wonderful food here and disappointing food here. I would say its a 50/50 chance you'll get a nice fresh fish taco despite the fact it's their signature dish. The burritos are okay nothing special(but cost more than other taco places...)the sides are usually good, partly the reason I keep going back my little girl loves the black beans and Spanish rice. The fresh salsa and chips are good too but you have to ask for "fresh" salsa out of the taco area other wise they give you a little cup of once fresh salas that was portioned and refrigerated long ago. Don't bother complaing if your fish arrives soggy oily and cold they won't redo it...I was directed to write a complaint on their web site to which I never received even an appologie for, they said the manager would be notified? The other thing that is annoying is the menu is not easy to understand I am always unclear about what costs extra and what is included and how the combos add up etc...and its not even cheap to eat hetr the fish tacos with chips are about the same price that I pay at Cactus Club...

Fish tacos are the best. But if you want the best deal for your money get a burrito! And remember. This place isn't cheap. It's Mexican subway. Delicious as F#%k tho

Believe the reviews, this place is absolutely garbage.

OK Mexican American. I've been in a few times over the last 6 months as they're right around the corner from my place. I've always found the staff extremely pleasant and helpful. The food is pretty much quick service California Mexican similar to and a cut above what you would find in Taco Del Mar. If you're looking for authenticity, you're in the wrong place. I've enjoyed the Flautas, the Tostado bowl and the tacos. All of the Chicken Asado, the Carnitas and the Pork al Pastor have been fine. I haven't tried the other proteins. They just need a little jazzing up with hot sauce. I like the red and black design of the interior, especially the chandelier. It looks cool and offbeat in, essentially, a raw space.

Food sucked. I ordered a fish taco, which took almost 15 minutes to finally get only to be handed a tiny taco with 2 very small strips of fish and 2 barely warm (but not browned) soft taco shells. I was shocked that tiny thing had cost me almost $5. Worse still, the fish had zero taste.

My wife ordered a beef burrito and said the beef was dry and WAY too salty and the salsa had a weird after taste. We were both highly displeased and I was starving, so we had to go somewhere else to finish having enough lunch to get us through our day.

Over priced, overrated and just not good in the least. No thanks, never again.

Going, going, gone!. My husband and I have been patrons of the New West location since the day it opened. I have seen the highest staff turnover in my life, including 3 managers. The quality of both the food and service has slowly gone down to the point that we now travel from Coquitlam to Vancouver if we want Chronic Tacos - it is that awful.

The manager has no idea how to instruct and train her staff on how to properly run an assembly line, i.e.: the person making the orders should not be taking cash/making drinks/running to tables. They loosely follow a system, but it isn't working and we got really tired of waiting 10 to 20 minutes for 4 tacos - and then waiting to pay for them.

The food used to be good. It never looks or tastes fresh anymore - and it is evident that the guacamole and lettuce sits out all day unchilled until someone orders it before they replace it. Gross.

They all need to go to the Broadway location and learn how its done and what fresh food looks like.
Laxdude
Better now, only get the fish taco. The old owners had horrible staff that were high, drunk, and stupid. New owners seem to have gotten things better.

Only come for the tacos - specifically the Baja style grilled fish - they are great. Better than great - but you will have to wait for them.

Can't say I like the burritos they do, you just end up with way too much tortilla on one side that acts as a pressure plate designed to spray the contents on to your pants when you bite in.

The meat had no taste, salsa is bland, hot sauce is not hot, cold, over priced, understaffed, took forever to order. This is not mexican.

Been here twice now. And it's a pretty good tex mex joint! I'm assuming either management has changed or they decided to step thing up. The staff were all super nice. Food was fresh. I order the chicken tostada bowl with guac. Comes to $11.00. Portions match the price. Decor is kinda like a biker/Ed Hardy hangout with comfy booths and high top tables. Also serves liquor.
Almost as good as Chipotles... Just missing the corn salsa.

I have tried this location three times in the last while. Each visit worse than the one before. Over priced slow service lousy food. Nothing like the cambie location. In today's visit had a trainee yet again. Some moron in the back was talking to girl who was trying to train the newbie. The poor girl replied to the idiot in the back she was working for free she was off an hour ago ???? WTF ??? If you cheat your staff I guess that's why you think you can cheat your customers ???? Won't be back. My suggestion to anyone wanting Mexican or tex mex travel up to taqueria tropical on 6th. Where the food is great and the staff is always happy to see you.

Delicious!! Contrary to the older reviews the staff was very friendly and helpful. I've been to the Broadway location and the Nee West one lives up to their reputation of delicious food. I ordered the carne asada burrito. It is massive! So good though. They make everything in house and fresh (one of the friendly staff told me that). Anyway-- if you're looking for "authentic Mexican" food this place isn't it. Go to a Mexican restaurant. This place is for the tex-mex or LA style burritos. Equally great though.

Food: Pretty Good - Service: Pretty Bad.. I was craving Mexican food so I was excited to try Chronic Tacos for the first time. The menu looked good online, I later found out many of the prices are different once you are actually there. I knew what I wanted when I walked in, and found myself repeating my order to all 3 people it to took to complete the order. They should be better organized, and it would speed things up you only had to state your order once. Another review nailed it, the staff is indifferent. The girl at the register couldn't even crack a smile, she was the only one not in uniform and made you feel like you were inconveniencing her. Our taquitos took a while, and they kept yelling at the chef to hurry up. My burrito was done and I had long ago paid by the time they were ready.

As for the food it was a mixed bag. My Carnitas Burrito was enormous but bland. The meat had no flavour, and $1.49 for the wee bit of guacamole was a rip-off. On the other hand the Beef Taquitos were apparently "the best thing I've ever put in my mouth". My boyfriend loved them. I will give Chronic Tacos another try, hopefully next time will be better.

Update: I have since tried to dine at Chronic Tacos twice more only to be further disappointed. First attempt failed because they were out of beef, when I changed my order to chicken, they were out of chicken. Aren't those kind of important ingredients? Second attempt failed because they were apparently out of enchiladas and taquitos. This doesn't even make sense to me. Unfortunately, I will not be attempting a third time which is a damn shame because I enjoy Mexican food.

Pretty ridiculous -- false advertising?. I was excited when I saw that Chronic Tacos moved to New West. I hear they are famous for their good eats in Vancouver. So I went in, looking forward to a more wholesome, unique burrito than I would normally get from the big chain taco places. I look at the menu, it's a bit pricey ($8.99 for a burrito). I see that you can get a Bean and Cheese burrito for a reasonable price (I don't normally get meat anyway).

To be clear, Bean and Cheese is listed under the Burrito section on the menu, where it says each 13" tortilla is stuffed with rice, beans, cheese, cilantro, onions and salsa. Sounds great!

So I order the bean and cheese, the unfriendly staff person dumps some bean and then cheese on the tortilla and starts folding it up. I ask, "Can I have some fixings please?" She continues wrapping it up and says, "It comes with just beans and cheese." I point to the sign and show her how it says it comes with all the toppings. She responds, "We just put bean and cheese in it." So then I ask, "Well, can I pay to have some cilantro or something in there?" and she just keeps wrapping it up, not listening to me, and then takes the burrito to the grill. So then I ask more loudly, "Can I please pay extra for some toppings or something?" She ignores me. So I leave. Feeling pretty angry and offended.

I did not want a burrito with just beans and cheese, and I was willing to pay to at lease have some cilantro and salsa on it. But, nope, the server clearly wasn't going to allow me that privilege! I will not go back there. Very poor service (rude, indifferent) that made me feel like crap. And it's bogus if they are going to list a burrito as coming with all the fixings, but make it without including those fixings--or even allow me to pay extra to add them! I get much better treatment at the chains!

Why all the hatred?. I absolutely love Chronic Tacos, I was always travelling to the Broadway location; which is a little out of the way. I saw that they had one in New West and it took me to what is (without a doubt) THE best Chronic Tacos in the lower mainland.

Firstly, service here is top notch. My orders tend to be a bit more complex then your average order as I tend to order double fish burritos like they're going out of style. The staff here is wonderful, and they never seem annoyed or anything they treat it like a challenge. They have so much enthusiasm and energy, it's infectious. Everytime I go, there's a newcomer, and you can see the excitement in their eyes. You can tell they just love it.

Nevermind the food, which I've had no complaints about since I've gone, and I go once every week or two.

If the management is listening, I want them to know that they're killing it and that they have a patron for life (or until the fish burritos kill me)
Mary
Staff need training. We left without eating because they ran out of all the taco fillings by 5pm.

Got fish?. I would just like to say that I am a fan of this place because you get a good sized portion of food for a reasonable price, and it tastes great! However, the last 3 times that I've been here, they have run out of fish! WTF? You know when you're really in the mood for something - like fish - and you're thinking about it all day and then you finally get to Chronic Tacos and you can almost taste it and you're so excited that you're going to have it and then you order and then they just hit you with the bad news. "WE'RE OUT OF FISH" and then your mood drops and then you quickly have to decide on an alternative? ... so then you're like - I guess I'll be back real soon for some fish...
so, if you're reading this Chronic Taco owner/manager/employee, please, please, please, order more fish 'cuz you know it's popular and people want it! Thank you!

Outstanding!! Came in to use my free tic toc coupon and had another and they were delicious!!!! They taste so fresh!! Will definitely come again!!
Ethnicfoodiefirst
Very disappointing. Tacos were very mediocre and service was terrible. The staff were too busy chatting with each other they left the previous patron's nachos in the microwave...yes I said microwave! And the guy had already left..."who's nachos are these?" no idea...wow. Big miss!
Mia
Did not taste authentic at all, Infact the tacos/mexican food I make at home is way better then this crap! There meat is so plain and the shredded beef tasted like bloody meat. The salsa has not zing, the guac was allllright, and I honestly almost threw up when I tasted their "hot sauce". My fiancé and I were in Florida about a month ago and we went to a joint that was similiar, and there is just no comparison! Anyways all together chronic tacos looks cool but tastes like crap. I would have rather eaten McDonald's French fries.

Chronic Tacos N.W. K, so, I haven't been at this location in serve rel month and just moved back near the area and was so excited to eat it again WORST MISTAKE EVER. nobody that is the same works there and all the "new staff members" look miserable I don't even want to converse with them they got my order wrong I asked for green salsa and they gave me red which is gross. The food doesn't taste the same and the service is far fetch from how it used to be. The head honcho lady is incredibly rude when she is asking to take our order and just troughs my food to the lady at the till like my burrito is a football. NOT IMPRESSED. I will never be returning to this location again.

-----11 Apr, 2012-----

Chronic Tacos. The food was really good, I'm not sure if it was because I went in on a saturday night they were pretty low on options so I ordered three tacos two chicken one beef . They were so big I didn't think they would be able to fit all that stuff inside of it. As for the people were friendly and cool but it was a little hard to hear them over the glass and the cashier/waitress girl was super nice and cute!

I don't even know where to start. This was maybe the worst and most painful experience of my life. Let me start with the staff. It's like they hired the "coolest, most hip" people in the world. These clowns acted like a bunch of retards and took me over 10 minutes to explain that I wanted a battered fish burrito. By the time my "burrito" was finished it was folded in to a cube and ice cold. I am mad Please do not go to chronic taco they're a bunch of chronic dumb-asses
Georgie
First time I came here I left because of the ling wait tonight I thought I would try it again. Painful wait in line very very disorganized my burrito was cold served our food on a dirty tray! I was told chronic was awesome sad it's not and u won't be back
YumVegGrub
Wanted to like.... I have tried out this spot three times and I can say that there is nothing I can find that I enjoy about it. Well, the servers are friendly, but so very slooow making the food. Most of it is cold (including the tortilla) by the time the rest of the ingredients are added. The ingredients on both burritos and tacos are sparse, tortilla is not fresh tasting, neither is the guacamole. You have to repeat yourself over and over so that the food preparer can hear you over the loud music. The almost nine dollar nachos are not worth it - Barely any food. From what i can tell the few times I have been here, one or two people take their work seriously but others are really just standing around. (The smiley fellow wearing glasses is nice.) That's probably why the floors are always dirty.

Good Comfort Food. Been here a couple of times and so far I'm quite impressed! Really like the shrimp tacos, carnitas and the tostada bowls. The prices are very reasonable and the people that work there seem very laid back and relaxed. Very friendly people.
Ptbeans
Food- good but it didn't taste as authentic as they make it to be. Service- poor: they would be in your face and ask you lots of questions but when you ask them questions, they froze. They also kept messing up our orders and forgot our drinks. Granted it was a new place but they should be more prepared Would go back again though... Hopefully I don't get the same service as last time
Penny And Rusty
If you're looking for a laid back place to pick up some Mexican-style fast food, Chronic Tacos might be the place for you. The interior of this American-based franchise is a little too Ed Hardy-esque for my liking (I think my retinas are still recovering from all of the bright red walls).
