Review It Char Burger - New Westminster

Jaci Benson
Great as always! This little hidden burger joint seriously hits the spot, and is so reasonably priced! The owners are lovely, and they hand make the burgers per order so there is usually a short wait time (but it's worth it). Their namesake burger, the I:T Burger is a crowd favorite (comes with 2 patties, bacon, caramelized onions and fries), but all the burgers are wonderful - I usually go for a double spicy Korean burger or the Cheeseburger myself. If you're looking to go all out and get another side ad well, you HAVE to try the garlic fries. So, next time you're in the area, stop by! Just remember they're closed on Sunday's.

IT CHAR, how I love thee! Best burgers and fries in town. I don't live nearby so only eat here every few months but I lust after the delicious taste. Juicy char grilled burgers oozing with sauce and omg the garlic parmesan fries! Delicious. If you get takeout the trapped heat will steam the fries and they get soggy (but still delicious) however if eaten fresh they are very crispy. The past couple visits I ordered the spicy BBQ as the It char burger is too much food at once for me. For two people, two orders of the spicy BBQ burger and one order of garlic fries comes to just over $20 with tip. Amazing value for the quality. It didn't take long either under ten minutes and all made fresh to order. P.S. I don't get why people diss the mall, it's actually beautiful architecture and really nice sculpture in the middle and nice natural lighting. Exudes a pleasant vintage vibe and I love the small vegetable fruit market, dollar store and of course liquor store. Various other utility type stores I haven't been to.

These are DELICIOUS hamburgers. Not sure whose can rival theirs in this neighbourhood. I didn’t even try the fries but will on my next visit. Excellent Mom & Pop establishment!

One of the best burger joint in town. Service is slow, but that is obviously because your burger is made fresh and not from microwave or steamer. Fries extremely crispy and the burger is full with flavour. Located and hidden inside a mall, well hidden gem. Friendly mom and pop staff.

Seriously the best burgers around. Garlic fries are amazing. Small family business. Feels good supporting them too! Can’t wait for them to open back up. Been telling all my friends :)

Perfect grilled burger with crispy edges. Decadent garlic fries come with mayo dip. Good prices, good service!

We miss you, and hope that your family is well. i:t char burger has been closed for about 2 months now due to family concerns. I encourage everyone to support them when they open back up, and buy one of their most excellent burgers and fries.

Best burgers EVER, they make pretty good food for decent prices and serve a variety of different options like butter chicken, Burgers, Curry, And fries. They are very professional for a family business. and have takeout which cames in handy when i'm busy. Overall just an awsome place, They have been temporarily closed but i can't wait until they open again!

The burger was good, 4 out of 5 at least...but the fries were amazing! Also got some chicken noodle dish for tomorrow so had to try it...it is delicious too...highly recommend, dont let the mall location put you off...I did take out and everything was great!
Yes. We,re Eating Again.
This place truly fits under the heading, 'hidden gem' so much so that I am tempted to steer you wrong on its location. That would be selfish and just wrong however, plus its really not that hidden in the literal sense. Located in the inside corridor area of Royal Square at 8th and McBride, this is a food court eatery. As malls go, this one provides a very nice 'dining room' for IT Burger! Complete with a beautiful 2 story wood carving and skylights, and seemingly, minimal traffic, we ate in a mall and didn't hate the surroundings! Now we don't usually seek out 'mall food' but I had read about IT Burger in a couple of trusted local food blogs (and this is why you should read food blogs) and knew that the burger was worth coming for! Two beefy nicely charred patties, with bacon and cheese and delightful sweet caramelised onions. These onions must have cooked slowly and forever. They were amazing! The fries were world class also. Skin on and very crisp, I upgraded to Chilli Fries. This was not a mistake. Marie is not keen on burgers but that's OK as IT serves a variety of other things also. She had the Butter Chicken on Rice which was as good as we have had at many Indian restaurants. The chef here has some history having cooked at The Westin Calgary and Buchanan's Chop House and by all accounts, is always present. We had all this food and a couple of Cokes for only $25. Amazing!

My partner has been meaning to bring me to “Royal Mall” for some time now. This strip mall in New Westminster” is an out door space with an inside courtyard and foodcourt. The latter would be our destination. Where the number of available tables and the age of their chairs speak to the traffic. This is the home of “IT burger”, a foodcourt stall offering a plethora of cuisines, and not just what its name suggests.

I am addicted to their hand cut fries! The cheeseburger is my go-to; the beef patty is always juicy, not too big yet very filling, and the lightly toasted bun tops it off perfectly. The reason I docked half a point in my review was because of the processed ``cheddar`` cheese used on the burgers. (I am unsure if they offer other kinds though as I have yet to ask).

I was a little skeptical about these reviews as I am a burger fiend. I went to try these and I have agree with them and go one step further... These are the BEST BURGERS in New Westminster BAR NONE!!!! Real meat, real fries (not the prefab frozen ones you get at most places. People like to call them 'home fries'. I think they should be called 'real fries! All the food is made fresh and to order on a real flame broiling BBQ grill. So don't expect your food in 2 mins. There's one guy working here and this isn't McDonald's. The regular burger is 3 oz and for some people it may be too small but the burger and fries was the right portion for me. The comments about difficulty trying to find it is correct. There are few signs as Royal Square is a tiny nondescript mall. But I'll be back. It's always feels good to support a mom and pop place. Great value, quality and taste!

In New Westminster this morning for medical appointments at the hospital, and had time to kill between tests, so headed over to Royal Square Mall to check out the burgers at IT Char Burger. We (as a threesome) arrived at the Mall about 9:30 am.

The ‘restaurant’ (food-court stall) is located inside and way at the very back of the Mall — we parked near the Mall’s main entrance, and entered there. Note: if you wish to skip the walk inside the Mall, the restaurant itself is most-easily/readily accessible via a side entrance to the Mall located right by the entrance to Safeway.

I asked the owner if it was too early to order burgers - “No, I can make you burgers.” - was his reply, and what we wanted to hear. So we were good to go!

At this still rather early time of day, their signature burger (IT char burger) looked way too big for the time, and our appetites, so with a helpful recommendation from the owner, we opted for smaller single meat patty burgers, and ordered three cheeseburgers, but via the lunch ‘combo’ (i.e., with fries & drink), so that we could taste what was anticipated to be some great fries.

Our food came out of the kitchen totally made-to-order. The burgers well-made - buns toasted, the inside ingredients plentiful, fresh, tasty, and juicy — definitely requiring a couple of napkins to fully-enjoy!! The fries were great, and all they have been cracked up to be — lightly-battered and seasoned, and cooked perfectly.

It was a fun dining experience. Food-court burgers and fries for breakfast, certainly far from our usual fare to start the day, but for today, a rather nice, tasty, and much-enjoyed treat. A cool little place, and based on our initial taste, very capable of serving up some rather well-prepared food stuff.

One of the most underrated burger places in the lower mainland. Patties are juicy, toppings are fresh, and fries crispy. I've never had a bad experience here.

My favourite burger joint! I always get the bacon cheeseburger and am never disappointed. I recommend this place to all my friends! The fries are great too!

Finally got to try this place! I ordered the cheese burger and fries. I didn't get to take a picture of my food because I ate most of it on the car ride home. The burger was flavourful and juicy. And the fries were delicious and crunchy. This definitely looks like a dive. I can't wait to try some other dishes like the butter chicken and beef bulgogi. Maybe next time I'll be able to take a picture of my burger before scarfing it down.

The burger are incredible, so much flavour ! The fries were impossible to resist, the price is great! Somehow we ended up ordering double patties so next time we will get singles, it was just so satisfying and yummy!!

Did the beef on rice dish, was as good or better then your normal sushi place. It is in a little mall and its worth stopping. They do burgers and poutines as well a little of everything. Not bad at all

IT Char Burger is a hidden gem! and Chef Soon is awesome! Love his Korean Spicy Burger. Sauce was delicious and meat was cooked perfectly. Prices are very reasonable. Single patty costs me $4 and Double patty was just over $5. Will come here everyday if I could for burgers (unfortunately I live in Richmond).

Wow! Completely random find! Great burgers, great fries, and you can't beat the price. It's an outta-the-way little hole-in-the-wall but definitely worth seeking out! We'll be back!

Just try it. It's a really random quiet mall to find such great burger & fries & butter chicken. It was fairly quiet for sat lunch hours, but don't let the quietness fool you, it's one of the best burgers we've ever had. For under $20, we had an It char burger (signature item) and butter chicken + coke. Saw the reviews but was suspicious, however the food was surprisingly good and well over expectations. Burger was juicy, fries were perfectly crunchy with a hint of salt, butter chicken was oh so flavourful. Will definitely go back to try other menu items as well.

Me too!. It's a non-descript burger place in a non-descript mall in a non-descript neighborhood. Whodathought you'd get such a tasty burger? Some co-workers had seen all these glowing reviews on Urbanspoon, but were still afraid to give it a try. Undaunted, I went ahead and got the Korean Spicy double burger. (Current owners look Korean, so I figured it was a better bet than the butter chicken, which seems like kind of a random menu item, no?) It came to $5.45 tax incl. The patties were well done, topped with lettuce and some really tasty hot sauce. Totally hit the spot. I don't even like red meat all that much. I'll come again. Maybe I'll give the butter chicken a try for kicks, but for now, I can vouch for the burger. Give it a try.

Update January 2019: still coming by every couple of weeks for quick take-out lunch. In addition to the burger, the beef bulgogi is also pretty decent. Co-workers get hungry when I eat it at my desk -- even if they already ate lunch!

Hidden Gem. This underrated gem is hidden away in an often deserted food court in an equally deserted New Westminster mall. Most people are here to stock up on booze at the BC Liquor, or to get their nails did at the nail salon. It’s truly a pity, because this burger joint deserves a much wider audience than what it currently has.

The menu is an assortment of burgers and sandwiches (as expected), breakfast items, and the odd beef bulgogi and butter chicken thrown in for good measure. The fries here are not really fries at all, but rather, potato wedges... The garlic fries are a generous portion of wedges smothered in cheese and served with house lemon aioli – need I say more?? If you’re feeling like an indulgent east-meets-west dish, ask for the butter chicken fries; the butter chicken is rich, creamy, and mild in terms of spiciness... And really, where else can you get this pairing in New West? Consider it a spiritual cousin to the specialty poutines at the Spud Shack in the New West station.

On to the burgers... Juicy, fresh, and a homemade taste to them – I guess the best way to describe them would be to compare them to the burgers at the sadly defunct other burger dive in town, Burger Burger (RIP, Burger Burger, I miss you already!!). Nothing fancy or pretentious about it, just a solid, satisfying burger. Sure, the patty isn't huge, but get a double burger, and problem solved!

As mentioned by other reviewers, menu items are affordably priced. Burgers for as cheap as $3, and full combos under $6... I often get greedy and order the butter chicken fries AND a mushroom burger, which adds up to about $11.

OK sure, it's inconveniently nestled away from the rest of the New West dining scene, and in a desolate food court, no less; but for me personally, that just adds to its underdog vibe and makes me want to get behind it even more. Hurry up and pay them a visit, lest they follow the same bleak path as our sadly departed Burger Burger (*pounds fist on chest*).

HIDDEN GEM. This place is hidden inside the Royal Square Mall & it's quickly become a lunch favourite for me. Prices so reasonable, it's beyond belief and the quality of the food is quite good for the price you pay! Burgers as cheap as $2.95! Eat here.

Shockingly cheap and good. I had breakfast and found it to be as good as any other decent place but at half the cost. The burgers are good too!!!

This is my favourite place to eat in royal square mall, great food at a price that adds to the delicious experience. The owner seems really dedicated and polite! Highly recommend the spicy terriaki burger with fries and also the chilidog. There are weekly specials that are absolutely a must have!

I usually go to it char burger about three days per a week, becauseThey are very delicious and clean. However, most importantly, their price is unbelivably low! I mean good taste, nice and clean, and reasonable price? What more can I say? For instance, they serve french fries and any burger for about 5.50! I dont think I won't go Mc donald any more :P Also they have a wrap too. But it was SPICY! And it was something that I haven't been eatten before! You guys should try it! I recommen you
Vancouver's Best Burger
Built with a basic burger bun and beef patty, I:T Char burger isn't here to flex its creative muscles. I am positive I ordered a single patty burg, but upon taking my first bite I realized I was chomping down two patties which is always a nice surprise.

IT Char Burger (pronounced like the word “it”) is tucked away in the food court of Royal Square Mall. I know, who knew there was a food court inside? Truthfully, I use the term “food court” quite liberally. In addition to burgers, they also serve breakfast items, sandwiches, bulgogi and some other Asian dishes.
