Review Shang Noodle House - New Westminster

We all have our favourite places to eat Chinese food. However when hosting a wedding reception at a Chinese restaurant with a large group? You do it at Kirin. Due to Covid-19 restrictions one needs to be masked and not mingle at the tables. Food was also served to us in portions even though it was between family members. However this is Covid, so precautions must be taken. The food was good, but to some it was new and certain things were untouched. It wasn't because it was bad. The diner was used not used to what was being presented. Lots of parking was available here as compared to the one on Cambie.

I was craving for noodles and decided to try this place. As I walked in, it was a spacious restaurant. The server passed one to another and pointed at a table for me to sit. It was fine. Typical Chinese restaurant service I thought. And I ordered a combo special, the timing was a little longer than expected. It came in about 15 min or so. The deep fried wonton was more burned. And the noodle was not how I expected in taste wise. It was like food from a Chinese restaurant in a small town. Hot and sour soup was not hot at all. The quality is questionable. And once the food was delivered, you would just get left at the table until you asked for the check. I still have t two star because overall it doesn’t disgust me. It’s just not up to good standards of a restaurant by the casino.

Looks like there was a change of ownership. The menu had changed. I was there an hour before closing time and the spinach ramen with barbecue duck was sold out. The steam dumpling quite big was very good. I ended up ordering wontun soup which was steaming hot with broccoli and corn and noodle also satisfying. Service pretty good.

Restaurant is not opened. It is being served by Kirin next door (same kitchen). They only do take out but probably better to order through online platform instead of phone call. May be they will reopen when they gave enough staff and customers.

Food is average/below average. Had a hard time finding the “7 types” of mushrooms in the Red Reishi Mushroom Ramen. Average taste. Sounds more special than it actually is. Portion is huge because it is like 90% noodles. Someone ordered the Squid Ink Noodle meal and the whole squid was inedible. So overcooked. In hindsight, we should have asked for a replacement as all we could eat was the tiny noodle and salad portion. Service is average/below average. We asked a waitress for lemon slices specifically for squeezing on the salad (We had to specify because I guess it was an unusual request?). She gave us two thin slices clearly destined for typical HK lemon tea. Why even bother giving us those slices when you can’t even squeeze such thin slices? She said that was all they had. Kind of hard to believe.

Great food great service super busy take out on Asian/lunar calendar holidays. On holidays order take out 1 day in advance or u may be denied service as their kitchen would b too swamped. Only can order from kirin the Shang noodle menu

Pretty tasty noodles and decent service. Love that they have vegetarian options. Bubble tea was pretty good too. Big portions.

The noodles are hand pulled and the texture comes through nicely. The combos offer a nice preset meal for a good price. We ordered xiaolongbaos, but they were quite big, more like da long baos (ask your Chinese speaking friends, it's funny). The wonton noodle soup were really good.

Food was ok. BUT, it was the WORST dining experience I had in my life. After me and my friend were done with our dinner, we paid for our bill, after paying, the lady server called me out and started scolding me about why I should give tip because they served me and kept nagging and nagging, she was very rude! My friend already gave the tip but she thinks she's so special that every single customer should give her tip. She humiliated me in front of other customers.

Some of the best noodle bowls ever. Not even including their appetizer menu which is amazing as well.

terrible customer service. rushed to order. Rushed to pay. Won't come here again.

Nothing special food was edible, not a repeat customer here.

Ordered a bowl of Malaysian style laksa.. Bad decision I have ever made.. Laksa was lacking flavor and the noodles were not even par.. For a restaurant sharing a kitchen with Kirin restaurant, food lack flavor. I would not recommend this place to anyone.. If this is the type of food coming out of Kirin restaurant, my recommendation is to go somewhere else.. I should say anywhere else would be better than shit food with no flavor, and it's also coming from a so called elegant Chinese restaurant??

Hello friends! Grayson and I went on quite the adventure last weekend. We started off in New Westminister, then we decided to take the new Q to Q ferry over to Queensbourgh before deciding to go to the Queensborough landing outlets. By then it was pretty late so we chose to head on over to Starlight Casino to see what there was to eat around there. After a few moments of indecision, Shang: Noodle House was where we ended up going.

The menu has a great selection of noodles. It seems to be a fusion of HK food with Japanese ramen. I had the Prawn, Scallop, Chicken & BBQ Pork Spinach Ramen in Pork Broth. The soup based wasn't amazing but still good. I do like the noodles which is al dente and has a bite to the chew. There are a lot of toppings.

I wish I could describe the food here but because of the terrible service we received and what I can only guess to be our order being forgotten, I have to give this place a poor review.

It had been years since I have visited this restaurant and we figured we would grab a bite to eat here after visiting Starlight. Between 3 of us, we ordered a deep fried Eggplant dish and the BBQ Duck Spinach Ramen in Bonito Shuyu to share. We had a nice time chatting and having some of the tea (which was actually pretty good) but after having the tea refilled a few times, and realizing everyone around us who had arrived after us were already eating what they had ordered, we finally asked for an update on the food. This resulted in the waiters and waitresses finally taking notice in the fact that we did not have our food and in a few minutes, the waitress who took our order came by to provide us with small bowls and spoons and simply saying that the food is coming.

There was no explanation as to why there was such a delay but we thought it was on its way, so we waited .... and waited. Another few minutes go by (and people that arrived mere minutes before our query with the waitress occurred were receiving their food). At this point, we got up to leave. One of the other waitresses came over (only because the other waiter near us flagged her over) to tell us the food is on its way. There was still no explanation, just the vague promise that this food is coming. Actually her explanation was something about how it was because of the waitress who took our order. To me, I find this unacceptable. I am assuming our waitress did not put in the order, but it still took us having to ask after patiently waiting for over 30 minutes to almost an hour for any of the waiters to notice we had been sitting for so long without getting out food. Meanwhile everyone who arrived after us was getting food in a timely manner and no one thought to check in with us.

Due to the poor service (not just about the forgotten order but the fact that none of the staff noticed that we had still not received our order after so long), I will not be coming back here anymore.

The noodles are so good!! They use real pork bone soup, so full of flavor and you can choose from a variety of noodles, traditional ramen (very chewy, our favorite!), udon, and spinach ramen, etc. One of our favorite is #29, Spicy Beef tendon & brisket traditional ramen in Pork broth.

They also have delicious appies, e.g. fried spicy squid (calamari), golden sandy tofu (fried tofu), and fried eggplant.

We also love the tea they serve, which has a very nice fragrance! :) And the service is always great.

Only con we found is their bubble teas - the quality varies depending on how much flavored powder the server puts in. Not good value for the price.

Average prices, with average to mediocre food... Their soup noodles were not as great as places such as Cattle Cafe, Main Island Cafe, or Deer Garden

Cute and clean restaurant. Good atmosphere and service.
The servers were friendly and tea was constantly filled. Good vegetarian ramen option it was very tasty.
We arrived at lunch time on a Sunday and it was quite busy, but service was still fast.

They have a "randomize me" option on a conveyer belt, where the prices are by the plate colour.

Each time you go, they give you a 10% off next visit coupon.
I will be returning soon!

Shang Noodle House is located in New Westminster’s Starlight Casino. We found a Groupon deal for this place so we decided to try it out. There is also a location in Richmond too but we thought New West would have less people. They serve a variety of Asian noodles. We got here at around 6pm Saturday and the place was rather quiet but more people trekked in to fill up the place after 6:30pm or so.

Overall the food was pretty good, except that the service was just "meh". With 3 people, we had Spicy "Tan Tan" Traditional Ramen, BBQ Pork Spinach Ramen, Deep Fried Eggplant, Deep Fried Crispy Tofu and Pan fried pork and vegetable dumpling. Everything was quite yummy, but the service was a little disappointing. The waiter decided that he didn't want to write my order down and that he would remember it. Then, he came by when only one ramen was served, and asked if we have everything already. With 3 people, you would think we would have ordered more food. When he said he was going to check, he never came back to say anything. Then we asked another waiter, never came back. A third waiter came by and asked if we were finished and attempted to pick up the utensils, when there was still food on the table.

Finally, the guy that took the order came back and asked what we ordered again and said that the kitchen staff must have missed it. Eventually the BBQ Pork Spinach Ramen came it was quick bland.

I will go back for the food, but if you're looking for service, this may not be the right place to go.
Deelicious604
I would not deliberately drive here to have noodles as nothing was particularly memorable.

A place for MSG and bad service. Noodle soup is full of MSG so you get thirsty afterwards. The server got our order wrong and tried to blame it on us. Drinks are about 1/3 ice.....enough said.

Good, but nothing to write home about.. Came here with the sister as we were shopping in the area killing time to avoid traffic on Queensborough. Sister was hungry and the weather was chilly so I suggested the noodle place by Kirin at Starlight Casino. I've only been several times, but there wasn't much selection in the area so off we went.

Service was attentive enough, the two male servers were actually quite nice to us. Very friendly and filled our tea frequently. I got the roasted pork belly noodles; comes with spinach noodle in pork broth. Sister got the japanese fried chicken ramen in pork broth. The broth was good, I am very sensitive to MSG and I would know right away if there were any added to a dish as I get ridiculous headaches from it. I didn't get any so it was a good sign. My pork belly wasn't crispy and tasted like it's been microwaved as the skin was a bit soggy from the heat. Sister said her fried chicken was tender. Her's came with two fried onion rings...which was a bit odd.

The food was good, but nothing to write home about. I wouldn't make it a field trip to come out here for noodles, probably just a quick fix if I was in the area again.

Could have been better. Went for dinner with my wife and to the. parents tonight. We all order an appetizer and a meal. Before any appetizers even hit the table my meal, noodle soup, comes out like I'm going to eat alone in front of everybody.
I send it back to the kitchen to be served when everyone else is ready to eat, only to be scowled at in such a way by the idiot waitress I would have lost it had I not been with my wife and parents.
The appetizers were cafeteria grade at best and the noodles were oily and mushy. My wife's BBQ pork was tough, she couldn't eat it, and my soup cold because to teach me a lesson, the little moron just put it on the counter for twenty minutes near the cashier until the rest of the food came.
Never again. If my father hadn't grabbed the bill she wouldn't have got a penny.
Crappy service and mediocre food is all you'll get here.

Casual noodle restaurant with great value. Shang is a casual noodle restaurant that offers great value. The noodles portions are HUGE that I always have to pack it home with me. However, it might be more economical to bring your own container as they charge $0.25 for each take out container. My favourite noodle here is the Spicy Thai flavour noodle. The udon definitely soaks up all the spicy flavour! I love the fact that they use fresh lemon and basil for that herby sour thai flavour. Also parking is not a problem as the casino offers tons of parking. I have never had to wait at Shang garden, turn over is quick. However, seating can be a tad bit uncomfortable as the tables are not that big in size. Otherwise, great place to fill up your tummy!

A horrible experience... 5 wrong orders?. With my family, we were going to have lunch with a friend & go to Queens Borough afterwards for shopping. We were originally planning to eat at Kirin, but it was so busy because it was labor day and everyone was around the area. We decided to try out Shang Noodle House which was next door.
Walking in, we thought it was a nice place, considering the fact that they get to almost no business because of Kirin. Luckily, we came a bit earlier and it was still empty. When we sat down and lunch hour came around, the place was so packed that there were people waiting outside!
We were seated at the very corner of the room by the washrooms.. There were almost no waiters around us nor could they see us and give the attention we need to order our food. After about 15 minutes of waiting (this was before it got busy), we finally placed our order. For 7 people, we ordered 3 ramen noodles with a side dish + drink and 2 dimsum plates.
Our food took forever to arrive.. As the place got busier, we could see people sitting in front of us get their food before we did! At the time we had already been sitting down & waiting for at least half an hour.
When the first plate arrived.. It wasn't even our order! It took another 5 minutes of waving our hands around to get someone to pick it up and find out that it belonged to another table. This happened again 10 minutes later. After 2 wrong orders, our first ramen arrived, following in with the next. We were suppose to have a deep fried pork chop with our friends ramen, but she received chicken instead. Another 10 minutes later, we finally received one dimsum plate. Much later, they handed us our last ramen bowl, when everyone was done. It was udon noodles, when we ordered ramen! It also came with deep fried pork chop, when my family ordered chicken. They had mixed up our chicken and pork chop and it came so late that we couldn't just easily exchange the plates between each other.
As we were about to leave, disappointed that our pork dumplings (that only consisted of TWO) and our ice tea never arrived, we were about to get up and just ask for the bill, when the two dumplings decide to arrive after over an hour and a halves time. It was so upsetting that it arrived so late. Everyone was dissatisfied and no one wanted to eat it. The ice tea never came.
At the end when we paid, they never gave us back our change. By the time we left, lunch hour was over. We came much earlier too. We wasted so much time here, even when we asked if our food was coming when we got the change. We even confirmed our order a little bit later just to make sure because of our late dishes.
Overall, the food was alright. Nothing special. The service was just horrible. We wasted so much time and I ended up being late by an hour and half to another appointment later on the day.
We will not come back again.

Ramen is NOT ramen. We went to the Starlight Casino for dinner with the kids until we found out kids were not allowed in.

As an alternate, there are a few other kid friendly restaurants close by the casino - Sports Bar, Shang Noodles and Kirin. We ended up at Shang Noodles.

The restaurant was quiet, probably because it was only 6:30p and the location is out of the way - not walking distance from Queensborough Shopping Plaza. These restaurants at the Starlight facility are targeting the Starlight gamblering crowd.

The restaurant is clean. Waitresses are attentive. Looking at the menu, the prices are reasonable. Lots of choices and options on the menu. It's part of Kirin chain.

For the 7 of us, the bill was $85 or $12/person - 5 adults and 2 kids.
As mentioned earlier, it's a noodle house. You have many choices of noodles - ramen and udon. It's been awhile since I've had ramen. I ordered a special which includes a appetizer, noodles and drink. To me ramen should be ramen. At Shang's ramen is NOT ramen. Their ramen is an inexpensive cheap Chinese noodle sold as ramen. My brother in law read the menu, he ordered the Japanese ramen while I ended up with the cheap Chinese noodle. I was not happy with that!

What did I think of the food? It's the worst bowl of noodles I've had simply because I was expecting ramen but did not get ramen. Regardless of how good it is or how perfect it is, it's going to be $%^&* because it's not what you're expecting.

Perhaps I should've read the menu carefully or Shang should NOT sell the cheap Chinese noodles as Ramen. To me Ramen is a signature product or product category. It's similar to ordering Peking Duck at a Chinese restaurant. Regardless of where you go, it's almost always served is a similar fashion. How would you feel if you ordered Peking Duck, expecting Peking Duck but ended up with Crispy Skin chicken?

Will I ever go back? Probably NOT. Ramen is Ramen! If its NOT Ramen, don't sell it as Ramen. It's very disappointing considering its part of the Kirin chain of restaurants. For the ones not familiar with Kirin, it's a upper end Chinese restaurant......4/5 stars.

For the first time, read the menu.

Blah. Walked on over after checking out starlight casino....came here cuz the bf wanted to try their noodles. i didn't like it but he thought it was decent.
Food Monster
Ewww.... I ordered the tan tan noodle (assuming that a noodle place would know what tan tan noodle is)... But wow was that noodle bowl nasty. It was basically peanut butter with noodle and nothing else (no soup and no flavouring). My friend ordered the Japanese cha siu ramen which was watery with very porkky tasting pork. And the deep fried eggplant?? Tasted like batter eggplant... Where was the chili abs garlic?? Anyway, don't think I'll ever be back. Blek!!
Golden Villager
The food, while being unique from all the other selections you can find out there, is mediocre at best. The chilled cucumber was just cucumber and sauce, it wasn’t marinated as you can taste the cucumber and sauce separately.

Our server was very friendly, and the food arrived fast. This is an ideal place, when in the area, to go for a quick, cheap lunch off their 15 item Dim Sum menu.
Two Hungry Piglets
I've saved the crown jewel of Shang's Noodle for last - I present to you.... THE DEEP FRIED SQUID WITH GARLIC!! I could eat 30 plates of these in one sitting. I think I might try to do that next time.

I finally decided to get what I thought would be the safest -- the shanghai wonton soup. It came with a spring roll and a a choice of hot or cold soy milk.

Located right next to the Kirin at Starlight Casino is Shang Noodle House. While they both belong to the Kirin Group of restaurants, they’re going after a different market.

Colleen and I decided to stop by here for dinner and since the last time I was here was a few years ago I said why not. Although the last time I was here I didn’t understand why there was corn niblets in my soup. The menu is a mix of sorts when you order, just because of the fact that you can add stuff to customize your very own combo. Colleen felt like duck and so we ordered one. It was a very small portion and all bones. And I ordered this ramen like soup base with pork. Don’t ask. Next to it is like a pan fried fish patty. Already wished I wasn’t here………………… Colleen got herself the hot and sour noodle soup, it looks like a big bowl but in my opinion it had small taste. Colleen thought it was watery and pretty bland. Not enough of the hot and sour taste to it. Overall, well… I’m sure you could tell I didn’t enjoy the food here. Service was also lacking even though there was only a handful of tables occupied, there were no tea refills or checkups. Gourmetcetera
This restaurant is an odd combination of a Hong Kong cafe and a Japanese ramen shop, which I guess puts it in the Ajisen category of odd, non-traditional ramen. Case in point, the presence of Hong Kong style milk tea on the menu. Being one of my favourite hot drinks, I couldn’t resist ordering a cup. I found the tea to be a little too milky, to the point that the signature strong tea flavour was drowned out by a bland creaminess. I prefer that robust eye-opening astringency, so I wasn’t really feeling this formulation.

Shang Noodle House is a restaurant of the Kirin Group. We actually wanted to go to Kirin in the Starlight Casino location, but sadly their last call ended for Dim Sum, so our only option was to try Shang Noodle House. They share the same kitchen as Kirin, so you will find similar quality in food. I find the food items a strange mix of Hong Kong Style Cafe and Japanese Ramen Shop. The interior is nice and has a lot of seating. As it was around 2pm, this place was pretty empty. Mango Calpis ($3.50) was what a few of us ordered and it comes in the big bubble tea cups. Steamed Shanghai Pork Dumplings ($4.58) comes with 4 pieces. The quality was ok, but still isn’t as addictive as Dinesty or Din Tai Fung . Deep Fried Crispy Tofu ($4.28) has a lot of pieces for the order. Great for sharing. Slider of Sliced Braised Beef Shank with Pan Fried Onion ($4.28) comes with the 2 sliders. It’s deliciously crispy on the outside. Sliced Braised Beef Shank ($6.88) has 12 pieces and another great dish t

Upon entering this restaurant, you get a feel of stylish contemporary design with calming coordinated colors. Personally, I really like the feel and decor. They had 3 plasma TV side by side on the wall, which was definitely a plus that day we went, becaus

After buying a new area rug at the Winners by Byrne road with my mom, sister and brother in law, we went for dinner nearby. My mom picked the place, which in actuality is a rarity, because she will usually tell ME to pick somewhere to eat. This time, she wanted to take us to Shang Noodle House because they had a special Chinese New Year set menu going on. The reason why is every Saturday after teaching at Chinese school, her and a couple other teachers will go out for a late lunch. Sometimes they will just go to the White Spot at Oakridge Mall since it's close by the school, but other times they'll venture farther. Such as driving all the way to the Starlight Casino to hit up Shang for some noodles. Apparently they thought it was decent enough to keep making visits. Funnily enough, one of the waitresses there used to be my moms student…ha what a small world. There were 4 other tables when we visited, and the entire decor is very clean with lots
