We arrived just after the restaurant had opened its doors for business at 11:30 am — we found nearby street parking (it’s 2-hour free street parking in the area).

Upon entering, the restaurant looked very small, with only a few tables arranged around the perimeter, but after settling into one of the tables, it became apparent that is was larger than originally thought — more tables hidden from our view, to the left of the service counter, and behind (we saw two larger groups with reservations being shown to these areas, but did not actually see the setups).  We liked the ambiance of the place - quiet, nicely lighted by natural light from outside, darker, warm colours, and all - and enjoyed looking over to the open kitchen at times, and watching the chef’s doing their thing.  We were their first customers of the day, but quickly followed by others - by 12 noon, this part of the restaurant was basically full, except for stool seats at the bar in front of the kitchen.

Service was warm and friendly, helpful (when ordering), and nicely-attentive — the two servers at the time, kept in contact to know how we were enjoying everything, and always ensured our water glasses and tea mugs were kept full.

What was ordered and shared:
— Agedashi Tofu — Assorted Tempura (prawns, veggies) — Fish Tempura (listed as ‘Snapper’ on menu, but as ‘Basa’ on bill) — Assorted Sashimi — Dynamite Roll Combo.

Nice presentations, top-quality preparations.  Tofu sweet & creamy, with an ultra light, crispy coating - and when dipped into the flavourful sauce, was so tasty.  The assorted tempura consisted of prawns, yam, sweet potato, squash, and green beans - light, crispy coatings, and ingredients cooked to perfection - sweet, and flavourful.  The fish tempura was a major delight - I had ordered the large size, and was so glad I did, it provided good portions for each of us, and the dish was so well-prepared - coatings light and crispy, the fish flesh, soft and moist - the fish sat on a bed of fresh & crispy lettuce, with a touch of a light and flavourful sauce - to say the least, a very tasty, and much-enjoyed dish.  Sashimi was for daughter and I, and we thoroughly enjoyed it - ingredients were pretty, cool, sweet, and tasty.  The dynamite roll combo - fresh, quality ingredients, so well-prepared - the rolls were mostly for Mom, and she loved them - daughter and I did the sushi, and found the offerings fresh and sweet.

Victoria Sushi provided a much-enjoyed dining experience.  Location, ‘cool’ ambiance, good service, and such quality food presentations and preparations, it gets the best rating I can give, and well-deserves it!!

Make sure to order the aburi sushi if you come here! Their aburi is better than most, if not all the restaurants in Vancouver that speciaize in aburi sushi. You will pay a bit more than your usually sushi spot but you are paying for the quality. Parking can be a bit hard to find so be aware.

Oshi sushi is on point here ! everything we had was a hit: salmon oshi, scallop oshi, and the red snapper tempura (the roll in the middle was tasty too but I forget it's name). The restaurant isn't very aesthetic but if you're going for the oshi experience then go for it !

Victoria Sushi is a hidden gem located in a residential neighbourhood in New Westminster. I’m sure many of you sushi fanatics have heard about this place over the past few years for their affordable ‘aburi‘ sushi which translates to flame-seared pressed Osaka-style sushi.

Pretty neat little sushi joint in New Westminster , parking was probably the only setback. Once we managed to find parking, we were promptly seated and given tea and menus. Food was served in a reasonable time frame considering the number people eating in.

We ordered the Salmon Oshi, Saba Oshi, Ebi Oshi which were pressed and seared. It's been a while since I've been to Miku or Minami, but instantly made me think I was eating there. Also had an order of Snapper Tempura, very neat dish that's not seen too often in Japanese restaurants in the lower mainland. Light and Crispy with a punch of flavor as you bite in.

Out of all the sushi there, I would say the hotae scallop oshi was the best. It was pretty good in my opinion but I couldn't stop drinking tea afterwards......
Side note: it's kind of hard to park since the restuarant doesnt have destinated parking spaces.

○ok service/ they never refilled water or tea; we always had to ask/ they don't regularly take the empty plates away
○excellent food/ favorites are all the oshi sushis/ definitely have some unique dishes here/ hidden gem
○small restaurant/ may not be child proof
○parking is a hassle but there's a retail parking in the building if you can find one
○would I go back? Yes

Went here to try it out for our 13th anniversary and was not disappointed! Their oishi sushi is delicious-we had the salmon, chopped scallop, eel, and beef oishi sushi and we loved all of them! Their dynamite roll, tempura and chicken teriyaki don were all enjoyed by the kids too. I am so happy to have found a place with delicious oishi sushi so close to home. Service was also great. Will definitely be returning!

Returned with my brother and once again, it was delicious! Lightning fast service and food came out quickly! Tried the mackerel and ebi oishi sushi, spicy agedashi tofu, ebi mayo and red dragon roll and was blown away. My tummy was happy!

Move over Miku, you have some stiff competition. A much more affordable but still retaining the good quality ‘Aburi’ sushi that is all the craze is available here, all day, everyday. . Aburi sushi  we almost got them all. The best out of all the ones we ordered was definitely the hotae scallop oshi. Melts in your mouth, the moment the aburi hits your tongue. The sauce, flavour and results all mirror what you can taste at Miku and for a fraction of the price! The restaurants does fill up fast so be patient with the food coming, expect to wait a bit. I found the salmon oshi was just okay, nothing too spectacular, I would say Miku’s version is better.

Best sushi with this price range! We ordered 3 oshis, 2 rolls and takoyaki. Worried about it might be too much for two people, but it worked out just fine. The must order is beef oshi, it my favorite! Enjoy!

After seeing everyone posting pictures of Victoria Sushi, I decided to visit with my family. I liked it so much that I returned a second time recently! Anyways, Victoria Sushi is located in New Westminster in a residential neighbourhood. Apartment buildings actually sit on top of the restaurant. Because of where it’s situated, it can be quite difficult to find parking during peak hours, although they have an garage that’s connected to the apartment but for customers of retailers.

You need Victoria Sushi's Aburi sushi in your life.
This has to be one of the best places for aburi sushi lovers who love the taste but not the price of the famous Miku dish. They have lots of options which are all seriously good, but salmon and beef have to be my favourite, eat them while they're hot!

Other menu options are slightly above average and service is a little slow when its busy, but I would definitely consider this place a hidden gem with fresh tasting sushi, good luck finding parking in this neighbourhood though!

A hidden gem in New West, tucked under residential condos. My first impression was "omg this place is like Minami, but cheaper!" Well, it isn't like Minami exactly, BUT they do offer the flame torched aburi sushi. The sashimi is fresh, and cut to a silky perfection. The restaurant is clean, and service is mediocre. If you're familiar with Korean hot pepper sauce (gochujung), that's what they spice up their dishes with here. Everything we ordered was amazing, and this is a big hitter on my list of sushi joints! I will definitely be back !

Typical Korean run Japanese restaurant with reasonable prices. Some dishes were overpowered by the sauces. The specialty rolls have generous portion and the sashimi was not bad but not the best I've had. The best dish of the night was the Aburi Tobiko Roll. The bill came to be less than what I expected so it's worth to come back more.

This place isn't where you'd expect a restaurant to be. There's limited parking. It is kind of scattered around this residential area.

From first glance the place looks pretty small. But we soon realized there was a semi private area for larger group and then another room beside it. We got there around 6 on a Saturday and it wasn't too busy. But as we waited for our food it started to get busy. Our salad came out pretty fast but the rest of the food took a bit longer. Longer than I would have liked but it wasn't that bad. We had the jellyfish salad, scallop oshi and beef oshi sushi, and the chicken yaki udon. I thought all the food tasted great! I just wished the beef oshi had less sauce so there could be more beef flavour. I heard there are secret menu items, so I would want to go back and try it and maybe some more of the oshi sushi.

Hidden gem alright. Location is within a complex of high rises with limited seatings and street parking. However food is well prepared and tasty. Of course there has been many sushi joints trying to imitate Miku for its aburi sushi. I wouldn't order salmon oshi again as its impossible to get that aburi taste from Miku. Fried dishes weren't too greasy and rolls were perfectly made unlike other Korean owned sushi places like Sushi Town/California.

We went for an early dinner. Service was SLOW even though only a few tables were occupied. We had no tea refills.  Restaurant staff was constantly on the phone and the sushi chef was working non-stop; the invisible take-out line must be very long.  Food was phenomenal!!! We will definitely be back for their other unique creations.

As I mentioned on my last visit to Victoria Sushi, you couldn’t be blamed for driving right past this little sushi joint and not knowing that it was even there.

Here we have the Spicy Agedashi Tofu. The tofu comes in large pieces with spicy sauce drizzled all over it. It’s quite good but messy.

The Lunch Special Sashimi Bento Box was quite filling and came with a selection of sashimi as well as a couple of pieces of salmon oshi sushi.

Loved how the seared salmon turned so buttery.

The Chicken Karaage had a light coating that was slightly crisp on the outside. Inside, the chicken was a bit dry but still tasty.

Which came first… the chicken or the egg? If that question has ever crossed your mind… no need to fret. Just order the Oyako Don which comes with both. Loved how juicy the chicken was in this bowl.

Back to the bento box… you get to pick between chicken or beef teriyaki. In this case, I picked the beef teriyaki. As I mentioned, this bento box was quite filling and also came with deep-fried fish as well as tempura and salad.

Overall, the food at Victoria Sushi is quite solid.

This is a good neat restaurant owned by Koreans. We arrived on a Sunday at around 5:30pm, not busy at all. Ordered a deluxe dinner for 2 ($45) and we loved it! It was delicious and came with lots of variety of food. There was sashimi, miso soup, prawn tempura, tuna tataki, beef or chicken teriyaki, oshi oshi nigiri, and dynamite roll. We were so full that we had to pack food away.

I finally got around to trying this hidden gem that every foodie has been ravishing about. Getting here, the parking was pretty ridiculous.. There is no parking in front of the restaurant or anywhere really just because it is at the bottom of an apartment building and surrounded by residents. My friend and I parked in the retail parking area under the apartment after looping around a couple times. The inside of the restaurant can probably seat around 30-35 people? A comfortable amount. We went on a Thursday night and it was relatively empty. They have a pretty extensive list of food ranging from appetizers, dons, udons, (specialty) rolls, bentos, set meals etc. My friend and I started with a recommendation from the waitress which was the Aonori Ebi Mayo. It was nothing fancy, it was pretty much just expensive prawn tempura with a a couple drizzles of sauce on it. We then got the wild sockeye salmon sashimi, very fresh & tasty! Then we ordered the Aburi Tobiko Roll & Salmon Oshi Sushi. I was in sushi heaven at this point. The Aburi Tobiko roll was a "party in your mouth" (how my friend described it) and the salmon Oshi sushi was the most similar to Miku's that I've tasted so far. It literally melts in your mouth; they were pretty spot on with the texture of the rice as well as the flavour, I was thoroughly impressed! I'm not sure if they do delivery but I would definitely order this everyday if they did since I live much closer to New West than I do downtown. At almost half the price for the food here compared to miku's, I would definitely recommend every Aburi sushi lover to come check out this hidden gem. I didn't have a chance to try out all the aburi's they had but I will definitely be back soon to try the rest!

This place is a hidden gem. It's actually authentic Japanese food with amazing well prepared, high quality items. They have Aburi! Sic pieces for nine dollars too! Was unreal. I kept looking around and aching for another stomach to try more. Definitely will be back. I don't see this place staying hidden for long. Awful parking situation though and seriously weird location.

Aburi sushi in the Tri-cities? Yes, please!

Ordered the salmon oshui aburi sushi and the veggie bento box for lunch.

Both dishes were beautifully prepared and the flavours were great.

The salmon aburi sushi ($9) is not quite as good as Miku's but pretty darn close, and for almost half the price, you really can't complain. The salmon came with a rich butter, white sauce.

The veggie bento box had two agedashi tofus with two pieces of grilled veggies over bean sprouts The tofu teriyaki was not your typical soggy mess over mixed veggies. The veggies were smoky and yum! The lunch set also came with 4 pieces of the veggie roll, which was delicious. I think there is a bit of tempera in the roll because there was crunch. The veggie tempura was light and crispy and not overly oily. No rice is included, but miso soup, green salad and two tiny veggie gyozas are. All for $10.50. The roll bento for $9.95 is a bargain, and comes with the above, but with chicken or beef teriyaki and a California roll. For $11.25 you get the same as the roll bento, but 3 pieces of the salmon aburi sushi instead of the Cali roll.

The dinner bento boxes give you more stuff, but the veggie one starts at $14.50. Lunch is your best bet for value, so come before 3:30 pm!

Was only able to try 2x of the Oshi sushi yesterday looking to compare with Miku and Minami. The price point was very good as it was $5-6 less than the Aburi Restaurant's signature pressed sushi. What first jumped out about the salmon oshi was that it was Atlantic salmon rather than wildsockeye. This was fine in that it set the flavour and texture profile apart from Miku/Minami. On top, however, was also a sliced cerano pepper rather than a jalapeno (which other renditions such as Kishimoto have used). Despite the different salmon, the overall flavour and presentation was extremey similar - this includes the once-secret Miku sauce. The Aburi saba oshi was my other takeout item and, as my favourite dish from Aburi Restaurants, I was surprised just how close they got it; the taste was virtually identical. They did try to dress it up a touch by adding green onion (negishio would have been a better additive; more traditional), but it really didn't add much nor did it mask what they were trying to accomplish taste-wise. It is a bit out of the way for us Vancouverites, but for those living in New West or who regularly commute across Patullo, this should be a regularly visited staple for the pressed flame-seared sushi alone.

Was craving sushi while I was in the new west area! Saw the good reviews and thought I'd give it a try. ITS SO GOOD! I was surprised by the location and think the place was going to be much. Store is pretty quiet, service is quick. There's only one server so when it got busy, the wait was a little longer. You have to try the FLAME SEARED SUSHI! Its so good, skip the soy sauce and eat it on its own. Sashimi is fresh, tempura is crispy and teriyaki was...teriyaki. Will come again!

I found this tiny place thanks to a food blogger. From exterior, if it wasn't for the high recommendations from the blogger, I wouldn't step inside to give this place a try. Also it is not at some high traffic area. I went there for lunch and tried their pressed sushi. Both salmon and saba are delicious. They seem to use quite a bit of mayo on top and torch it to give it a fusion kind of flavour. My brother ordered the bang bang salad. The portion is decent and dressing is mild yet flavourful. My favorite is the beef tataki, oh boy, this is quite different from most places I've been to. It is on a bed of lightly sauteed onions and is just... Amazing... Same thing, they used mayo on top of the ponzu sauce. The last thing I ordered is their CSA sashimi. It is basically wild sockeye salmon wrapped in thin-cut cucumber. It is a great non-carbohydrates alternative.

In conclusion, I'd never expect to find such a nice Japanese fusion in New Westminster, but I guess sushi is now the new trend. Owner said they've opened for 7 years already, but has recently changed the menu. Well I guess it's a GOOD change then...

HIDDEN GEM IN NEW WEST. I never woulda known about this place if I hadn't moved into Victoria Hill, it's that tucked away. Tried it out the day we moved in back around Xmas 2010 and have been eating there at least once a week ever since. The owner and head chef John is one of the friendliest guys you'll ever meet and he along with his staff have created a menu that rivals anything you'll find DT (and at half the price!) Their specialty rolls are ridiculously good (Red Dragon, Potato Crunch, Korean Kiss just to name a few) and their hot stone rice bowls are even better than the ones at Hapa. Next time you're in New West try it out, you will not be disappointed!

-overall, the food was pretty good. i enjoyed the seafood salad and spicy sashimi salad.
-there is so much care put into the presentation of the food, which i appreciate. altho the red dragon roll looked better than it tasted lol. sashimi platter was beautiful apart from the tuna and toro which were both off color and tired looking.

interior:
-the restaurant was bigger than i thought it would be judging from the outside. and there were a couple fair sized private rooms

service:

Incredible, consistent sushi!!. My husband and I have been eating at Victoria Sushi since it opened. John, the owner, is a wonderful and caring business owner. He and the rest of the staff always ensure that we arewell taken care of and that the food is of the highest quality. I've never been to a restaurant where the staff take such pride in the food they serve. Absolutely everything we have tried at this restaurant has been delicious. We moved to Maple Ridge a while ago and still travel to Victoria Sushi when we're in the mood for sushi. There's simply no where else that comes close to providing the quality of food that they do.

The fish is always fresh, the soup isn't overly salty and the house karoke is to die for (although not on the menu so consider yourself lucky if they serve it to you!). Other favourites include the vegetable roll, deep fried snapper and seafood salad. Oh, and I can't forget the bottomless tea. Delicious!

Do yourself a favour and try it!!!! You won't be disappointed.

The chef's oshi sushi consisted of three pieces of Aburi Salmon Oshi Sushi. The creamy layer of sauce on top of the salmon was perfectly seared to create a truly mouth-watering grilled taste. The thin slice of pepper added a touch of spiciness which accentuated the seared flavour of the nigiri. I also liked how parts of the salmon retained its marbled texture, though the rice felt a tad creamy. Overall, this was very well executed and is the closest to high-end Miku's signature dish that I could find outside of Miku in all of greater Vancouver. At $9 for 6 pieces (it also comes with some of the bentos), this is a must-try.

A new sushi joint has apparently popped up in New Westminster and funny enough, the name of the restaurant kept on showing up in various conversations I had with friends, family, and coworkers! Honest to god I heard it 4 times in a span of a week. The name is Victoria Sushi.  Victoria Sushi is very similar to Kishimoto , and Miku where they offer Aburi Salmon Oshi or otherwise called "flame torched salmon pressed sushi". Victoria Sushi is actually located in a very underwhelming suburban area in New Westminster. It's attached to an apartment building and has very little street parking nearby. It's a completely residential neighbourhood. Their menu is pretty extensive and their prices are reasonable. They even make their own in-house sake ice-cream which I'm totally going back for. The  Kimchi Pork Ishiyaki ($10.50) is from their "Izakaya" section of the menu. It consists of kimchi, pork, onions, egg, and seaweed in a sizzling stone bowl. After you give it a good mix, it becomes an incredible fried rice that gets a bit crispy on the edges due to the stone bowl. Yum! Both Meta Knight and I thought the  Assorted Sashimi ($16)  was a little pricey for 10 pieces of sashimi. Nevertheless, you can't ignore the quality of the sashimi. It's the real deal and you can tell that nothing was pre-frozen. The famous Salmon Oshi Sushi ($9) . Unlike the Miku ones, it doesn't have a layer of salmon layered in between the rice. It was a solid salmon oshi dish though certainly missing the intense smokey flavour that usually penetrates right through even the rice. All in all, a very solid Miku alternative!! This location is easier to get to than downtown Vancouver and their salmon aburi sushi is almost half the price of the ones at Miku. Who can complain with that? Service Rating: 3/5 Food Rating: 4/5 Price: $$-$$$ Overall Rating: 3.5/5 Happy Eating!           Finding out Victoria Sushi had Aburi Sushi

This qualifies as a hidden gem in an unlikely spot. Victoria sushi is nestled in a small retail space on the ground floor of an apartment building that is within a quiet residential development. There’s no commercial foot traffic so it is definitely a “destination spot.” I’ve been here several times and the food is great. The sushi is fresh and expertly done and rivals many of the top sushi spots in town. However, the best thing is that the prices are a whole lot lower than those fancy places. Check this place out for sure. They have a good menu selection and even tofu soup which is very tasty. My recommendations are the tofu soup and Oshi and Aburi. Worth a return visit. Drop me a comment or a like, if you found this helpful.

It's been a number of years since I last visited this hidden gem. Back in the day, they were known for their not-so-secret off-menu items. Things have changed a bit over time and I noticed they list some of their special menu items now like their "spoon". On this visit, I tried their Appetizer Aburi Sushi combo which consisted of shrimp, tuna, salmon belly, hamachi ,wild salmon, toro, mackerel, unagi, and egg. The nigiri didn't disappoint. If you're in the neighborhood, this little spot is a nice option.
