Review Chan's Garden - New Westminster

The JOKER
The food here is very good. I didn't particularly like the ginger beef dish though as it doesn't taste like ginger beef. The small pieces of beef (???) were covered in batter and tastes more like sweet n sour meat which I dislike. I think they gave me honey garlic pork instead. If this was ginger beef then every restaurant has their own version of ginger beef but this one was not the traditional type. The chow mein and beef pan fried rice noodle were really good. The squid had a spicy taste to it too which was a good touch. Overall, 4 outta 5.

Quality and taste were not the best. The tofu tasted a bit old, but both the Almond chicken and beef with green beans were fine. The wonton soup was strangely sweet? I don't remember it being like that the last time I ordered so they might've changed this. The saddest thing is that they sent us the smaller sized portions for the Combo For Two items. I ordered this a couple months ago and it was the regular "large" size like the rest. Why change this?! I've ordered from here for years but this is one of the worst times. Very disappointing...

The combo menu items are very "Western" and caters to that group. My Chow Mein dish was large, but I didn't like the MSG. The place is convenient and there aren't that many Chinese restaurants in the neighborhood. This place is not your typical greasy spoon like the ones in and around Vancouver. The prices were reasonable, but you'll enjoy the meal when you ask them to prepare the dish with less MSG.

Update: We continue to love this place. This evening they gave us the wrong dish and immediately corrected the mistake by giving us the incorrect dish to take home at no charge. That's class. Great tasting food as always. Older review: Yum! We overdosed on several items (I forgot to take pics!!|) such as sweet and sour chicken balls, ginger chicken, boneless pork and chow mein. It was all delicious and leftovers for lunch the next day. Open for dining. Clean and upbeat decor, friendly staff. Street parking, handicap accessible. We will definitely go back.

Good for a quick, easy and filing lunch. They seem to have a lot of takeout. The only downside is though they have the space for it, they don't advertise themselves as doing big parties. But good enough for a filing lunch. Wait staff is friendly and tries and do their best to accommodate. Nice place to go.

Delicious chinese-canadian food. It's improved in flavour and quality. Prices have gone up slightly, but what hasn't? Lunch specials are great, as are the combos, you get a ton of food, enough for lunch the next day. The BEST chicken chow mein I've had!

I just moved back to Burnaby. Trying to find good restaurants again. I ordered from skip. My mind is blown. This is exactly what you're craving if you're craving Chinese. Unreal. Great portions as well. 6 stars.

Great local place for when you crave the typical takeout Chinese food: wonton mein (note: pork without prawn), chow mein, fortune cookies, with wonderful service. My 3 year old daughter had seconds of everything, and the server was so nice to her. Thank you so much!

The best Chinese food place to order from ... So much food , cost is cheap & they deliver fast and fresh . My go to place for Chinese delivery . Always get combination plates B&F .

An year and a half ago, this was my favorite place for Chinese food, but I have now scratched it off my list. It is fine that they raised the prices and increased the minimum delivery from $15 to $21 but as these increases went into effect, the quality of the food went down. I tried them one last time tonight. The honey garlic pork and the dry garlic pork tasted very stale and definitely were not fresh pork from today. The chow mein was adequate with only a minimum of vegetables added to it and no flavor. Finally, there was the chicken chop suey which I did not eat. In addition to being very watery, the chicken looked really odd. It did not appear to have been cut with a knife, rather torn in uneven chunks, and was a really weird white color almost like fish or as if it had been bleached. I will not be ordering from them again.

A solid update to the restaurant from its former life as the Chinese buffet called Chopsticks. Wife variety of items on the menu ensures there will be something for everyone. Some dishes were just as expected and others lacked the traditional characteristics that I was hoping for. Portion sizes are very generous so be careful when ordering for just two people. Overall I was less fulfilled than I wanted to be.

Great food! The Wor Wonton soup is so good! So are the spring rolls and most other dishes. We go to Chans at least once a week and are never disappointed. The staff could do with a smile or two but the food is really good so that's what we go back for.

Worst Delivery Service Ever. The mean spirited man that showed up at the front door was rude, he wouldn't show me a proper receipt. He said the order was 3.00 more than what was quoted on the phone and he rudely demanded a tip!

Too Good To Be True.! is what I said after my first 2 visits. Now after 5 visits I can honestly say, Amazing! Absolutely Amazing! The Food here is the best I have ever had. So Fresh Tasting (none of that burnt old oil taste). And the portion sizes you get are huge.! The Staff is exceptional. I still can't get over the size of their sweet n sour boneless pork, and their dry garlic boneless pork.( All Meat! ). The only thing I hate about this place is, they don't deliver to Queensborough. :( :( and the 4 other people I come here with would agree with this review.!

Would not recommend... High MSG and high on salt. Won't be coming back.

Excellent food and service. Chan's Garden is a great restaurant, fresh food, excellent choices and service.
I have been to Chan's many times and it is always good. Jean and her family take pride in using only quality, fresh ingredients. The prices are reasonable and everyone is friendly and welcoming. I highly recommend Chan's Garden.

The food quality is poor. They try their best to cook it well and flavour it but the quality of food to begin with is quite poor.

Won't be back. Disappointed by the food, just one big grease bomb. Service was fine.

We were disappointed.. We went to Chan's Garden for dinner recently -- a first-time visit for us. With it's bright sign, we found it easy to spot at it's Columbia Street location.

Once inside, we found a rather bright and stark decor -- bare, mostly-undecorated, white (or off-white) walls, with booths (the table rather 'high' for some of us short types!!), and lines of tables & chairs. My first reaction was memories of the cafeteria-style restaurants of a good many years ago -- no decor or ambience, but a spotlessly-clean, neat, and orderly set-up.

Upon entering, we found service to be prompt and friendly. We (a threesome) accepted being seated in a booth -- menus, glasses of water, a pot of tea and cups, and 'tableware' (dinner plates, knives and forks, and napkins), were quickly provided. We asked for bowls, and chopsticks - our request was accommodated promptly.

For a starter (while we "researched" the menu), we (two of us) ordered Chinese beer, and an order of deep-fried wonton to share. The beer was good - light, cold, and "hit-the-spot" - the wonton appetizer was 'ok'.

For dinner, we ordered to share: crispy ginger beef, szechuan prawns, seafood chop suey, and the house special egg foo young. The food arrived rather quickly (I would say, rather too quickly!!!). The dishes looked colourful, and the servings a good size.

The food presentations were the 'good' part of the meal, the food preparations the 'not-so-good' part.

--- the crispy ginger beef was gooey, greasy, and lacking in 'real' ginger flavour -- the szechuan prawn dish - consisted of some unshelled prawns, immersed in a thick, and quite terrible-tasting sauce, surrounded by broccoli -- the seafood chop suey - some rather decently-prepared pieces of fish, seafoods, and veggies, but too much gooey and greasy sauce -- the egg foo young - uncooked inside, and a total yuck!

Overall: friendly and accommodating service, served up in stark and cold ambience, decent presentations of food, that, in our opinion, was certainly not prepared as well, or taste as good as it looked.

Based on this dining experience, I just cannot see us returning for another.

Very good. Some of the best take out Chinese I've had. My favourites are the ginger chicken and Szechuan green beans, although the noodle dishes are great as well. The wonton soup was great. Tender wontons with no weird bits, flavourful broth and slices of fresh, juicy roast pork. Very pleased.

Very pleased with Chan's Garden. We were craving Chinese food and Chan's Garden fit our needs perfectly. We erred on the side of caution and ordered the dinner for 8 for the six of us but we barely put a dent in it! The portions are very generous so you get great value (and leftovers for days). Service was great, and the food was delicious. I would definitely recommend a visit.

Great meal!. Ordered take-out a couple of weeks ago and it was the best take-out meal I've ever had, and I've had plenty.

The ingredients were top notch and the dishes plentiful and absolutely perfect. So we're ordering in again tonight.

This place is great. Plates came to the table warm. Tea was excellent just like in China. Server was on the ball. Place was very clean and organized. Staff had unforms. Food was excellent. Will recommend and dine here again!

I have never written a review before for anyone but was so impressed with this restaurant that I wanted to let people know to support this place which has just opened...you won't be disappointed.
Excellent food-very fresh and well seasoned, reasonably priced and open to special requests/dietary restrictions.Good service. Definitely recommend and will go back. Nice separate area for larger dining parties.
* These are not the same owners as a former restaurant with the same name that also happened to be in New West on Columbia years ago but had bad reviews. These guys are from out of province originally.

Went in for dinner today and I was amazed at the change from before(chopsticks). Much cleaner and waiters are much more friendly. Food was delicious, it took a bit long but understandingly second day of opening being packed can't be helped.

Delicious food and a clean environment. Other than missing art on the wall, everything was beautiful. Their liquor licence is still pending, but I didn't miss it.

We tried the crispy ginger beef, BBQ pork chow mien and Szechuan green beans. Perfect seasonings and went together well. Under $30 and enough leftovers for a complete meal for 3.

We will be back!!
