Arrived for dinner time with my family, it was my first experience and i wasn't disappointed, i enjoyed everything throughly and will definitely be back !
Excellent food! We ordered roti, char kway teow, and the boneless hainen chicken. All dishes were delicious. We've had char kway teow from other places and Tamarind's has been the best, not oily as well. Service was a bit slow as there was only one person working. However, we would recommend and repeat!
It’s my first time to try Malaysian food and the experienced was great. The food was delicious and very tasty but very very expensive! The restaurant has a nice interior but limited space. First time experience is fine, so I will not go back here.
We ordered four different plates. We loved the green beans and fried rice. The Indian noodles and curry we re satisfactory as was the banana dessert. Thank you for the tasty food which made for an enjoyable evening.
To celebrate D’s graduation we went to Tamarind Hill in New Westminster. Having a Malaysian restaurant in our neighbourhood (only minutes away by car) is such a bonus!. Our friend Espie attended the graduation with us and joined the dinner. To accommodate everyone’s comfort level we ensured everything we ordered was at the mild-spice level, but you can definitely increase the heat as you wish.
Was here a few years back and had good memories. Decided to call late Friday morning and reserve for lunch at 1:30 with a couple co-workers. We arrived around 1:35. Place was completely full and the staff looked around worriedly for a moment before finding a newly-vacated table and quickly cleaning it for us.
The kitchen was closing at 2:30, so time was of the essence. My co-workers both opted for the Malaysian laksa, I chose the Singapore laksa, and we ordered the roti canai and vegetarian samosas to share. Appies arrived promptly. The slightly greasy roti and curry dip hit the spot as did the crispy-outside, soft-yummy-inside samosas. Laksas arrived quickly as well and were equally tasty. Delicious broths bursting with savoury seafood flavors, noodles arriving slightly undercooked, but reaching perfection as you slurp the broth and chew on the delicious shrimp and fish cakes.
All in all, the perfect meal for a miserable, rainy late-winter afternoon. (Note the attached menu's prices are out of date; laksas were $10, not $9, appies were $8, not $7. Still quite reasonable.)
Have never tried Malaysian food. I now love it and will be going back to Tamarind Hill. I thought the turmeric chicken roti wrap was so delicious with the curry sauce. Also tried the shrimp coconut milk laksa. Definitely going back to this place soon.
The place is not big, so reservation recommended. We ordered the char Kueh teow, or fried rice noodle, and a samba chilli combo of okra, egg plant, green bean with shrimp. The rice noodle was soft but not sticky. A little less soya sauce would be perfect. The combo was fantastic. Keep in mind that the portions are small.
I've been drinking a Starbucks iced tea everyday for the past week ~ in attempt to ward off the heat...it was 32 degrees yesterday!! 32 DEGREES!! I'm not a huge fan of Starbucks, but hey, sometimes convenience trumps everything. Venti Shaken Black Tea. Light ice. Unsweetened.
The first time I went here I had never tried Malaysian food. I have since gone to several Malaysian restaurants and while others have been good nothing, absolutely NOTHING, compares to Tamarind Hill. So ridiculously delicious. I have yet to try something I don't like.
Where has this place been all my life? I am so surprised I have never considered trying this place since coming back from Malaysia last year and being obsessed with asam laksa and other Malaysian street food. . Part of our lovely spread of our dishes for dinner. There were about five of us so we each picked something we wanted to try.
• always happy to dine here, better service I shall say!
• Okra, Eggplant and green bean sambal is one of favourite dishes, nicely seasoned and is perfect with rice
• Hainese rice $2 per serving, nothing special about this, I’d rather order ordinary rice which costs less
————
• one of my favourite restaurants in the lower mainland
• love their flavours, tastes like dishes have been simmering for a long time, its soooo tasty! Everything here is soooo delicious!
• one thing I found the chicken was undercooked. I had to take half of my order to go as I can't see properly inside the resto (dark lighting). At home it was still little pinkish, had to re cook it
• I will come back again and will just ask for well done poultry

• not so impressed with service this time
- our viand, Malaysian chicken curry was ready but I had to ask for the rice to accompany it. Server totally forgot about it. It was not that busy when we went around 1230nn
• Food though is still amazingly good! Getting pricey for $14 and up per dish, just share
Come here few times and i just find the cook at Tamarind Hill in North Vancouver cooks better. The food I taste at this location is ok but not as tasty as Tamarind Hill in North Vancouver or Banana Leaf.
A group of 8 friends got together for a long awaited kid free dinner. The Tamarind Hill -New West branch was restaurant of choice. While we waited for the others to arrive, four of us started with the Malaysian Calamari and Green papaya and mango salad. The calamari rings were crispy and served with a sweet Thai chili sauce. The salad was light and refreshing. When the others arrived, we ordered the Hokkien mee, black tiger prawns, mussels, sambal green beans. I really enjoyed the food at this Malaysian restaurant. The food was well prepared and the servers attentive. I can't wait to eat here again.
As an avid noodle soup lover, there are certainly a lot of options to choose from in the Lower Mainland. On this occasion, I was craving for some Malaysian laksa and happened to come across Tamarind Hill in New Westminster. Both locations, this one and the North Vancouver one, offers a wide range of popular Malaysian dishes.
Food here was amazing. Pineapple seafood rice was full of flavour and probably my favourite dish we had there. The soft shell crab was also pretty nice, a tiny bit too salty but personally I didn't mind. Definitely want to come back here as soon as possible
We love this place. I had never tried Malaysian food before until another foodie recommended it to us, especially this place. We were not disappointed. Roti Canai, laksa and satay as well as the beef rendang. All delicious! Can't wait to try out more on the menu. You should definitely call ahead to make reservations as this place is usually quite busy, especially on the weekends.
Definitely one of the better malaysian food out there in my opinion. had the char kuey tiaw (big fan of it), and it taste really great, love all the combination of the stirfrying ingredients and nothing is overcooked/undercooked. the eggplant, which is also great, tasted well not overwhelmed by the sauce. and lastly also ordered the deep fried garlic spareribs :00 ohhh mann this one tasted good, with the combination of deepfried with garlic, a hint of spiciness and little bit of green onion :)
in general all the food here are good to great.
will totally recommend the place, and especially if you're missing malaysian cuisine :D
Always great. The best Singapore Laksa ever! On a cold or rainy day there isn't anything better than a bowl of this slightly spicy dish!
Weekend Lunch. Roti Canai (2pcs) Signature Malaysian soft sweet bread with pan fried golden crust, served with spicy curry dip $6 3/5 - the crust was hard instead of crispy. I think they were prepackaged from the supermarket rather than homemade.
Satay Chicken/Beef (Bite size meat skewers marinated with lemongrass, turmeric, onions and coriander with delicious peanut sauce dip) $1.3/skewer 4.5/5 - I normally find satays too dry but these ones were not. I guess coz they were marinated which made them much better.
Renang Beef Curry with Rice $8.25 3.5/5 - too spicy for us. It comes with a bowl of curried vegetables. The beef briskets were on the drier side too.
We got there ~2pm. There were only 2 other tables. Our food came pretty quick and then the servers came and checked on us. We had a feeling that they were rushing us so that they could closed down the restaurant. Other than than, everything was nice. Good place to visit when I'm in New West.
Oh my god. We had the Malaysian calamari which was tasty but not life changing, and then the coconut mussels and the beef rendeng, both of which were stunning. My boyfriend could barely talk he was so happy. Our server suggested pairing the roti with the mussels, which was an excellent recommendation. Overall we were thrilled with our dinner.
A hidden gem in new west. Their malaysian food is quite well executed. Char quey tew, okra/eggplant/green beans are fabulous. However they need to work on customer service. That placegets pretty busy during lunch and literally telling people off because of no reservations. I think they should treat their customers with sincerety if they need to turn them away.
Meh...not so good. I have eaten here a few times and it has really gone downhill. Today was an all-time low. We had the chicken satays, chicken curry, sambal green bean/prawn dish, springs rolls and roti. The chicken satays had so much peanut sauce that my sister could not finish her meal. As for the curry and green bean/prawn dish, well they were severely lacking in the chicken and prawns. They might as well rename the curry to a veggies curry bc that is all that I had in my meal. And giving someone 2 prawns in a dish just makes them look cheap! Won't be back!
We like the food, but it's quite a small restaurant and it's very busy. If you don't have reservations on a Friday or Saturday night, forget about getting a table from about 5 - 8pm
I visited this place with a few friends and we ordered a soft shell crab appy, pineapple fried rice, sweet and sour pork chops, and a Malaysian laksa (note: they also serve Singaporean laksa) to share. We especially liked the appy, rice, and pork chops. The soft shell crab was well battered and flavoured, the rice had a good rice-to-ingredients ratio, and the pork chops were tender. I don't remember much of the laksa because I was already so full by the time I tackled it. Had it not been for Urbanspoon, I'd never have known that this place existed because I rarely go to New West. This was definitely a pleasant surprise.
Best nasi goreng i have had. I have tried a couple malaysian restaurants and have found this one to be the best. the service is averge, but the food is good. the roti was fresh, the mee goreng and nasi goreng are really good. good for lunch or dinner. i would recommend this restaurant to everyone.
One of our favs. We always seem to order the same thing, Beef Rending, Nasi Goreng and Eggplant on Spicy Chili Garlic, but we're always happy. Not cheap, and not a lot of leftovers, but some great tastes when in the mood for something different.
Yes it is Best in New West. We wish we could dine here more often. This time we started with Vegetarian Murtabak. The roti was soft and tasty with a filling of crisp vegetables. Next time, we'll try it with chicken.
Mains were Nyonya Chicken Kung Pow and Kari Lamb. They were perfectly spicy, not too hot for my companion but not too mild for me. The cashews in the chicken dish were my favourite part; cooked just right. The lamb was tender in a delicious gravy.
When you order dishes they are accompanied by a bowl of sticky rice.
We shared a dessert of fried bananas and vanilla ice cream. Lovely ending to our dining experience.
The drinks, Martini for me and Pina Colada for companion, were also very enjoyable.
Our server timed things perfectly, and was very polite.
This place is not cheap but offers good value considering the high quality food and service.
Just finished meeting friends for dinner at this place. The food was fantastic!!! We will definitely be back! Food was fresh, well cooked, well priced & the staff was very sweet!!! The Kung Pow chicken was superb!!!
Great food, Excellent service. The best malaysian i've had.
RECOMMENDED MALAYSIAN. I recently discovered Tamarind Hill after seeing it was ranked #1 in New West here on Urbanspoon. I can tell you that it's definitely worthy of that high rating. I haven't dined in yet but have ordered take out several times. The servers seem great, the food comes quick & they have a long list of lunch specials, most of which are just under $8. I recommend you try Tamarind Hill, great Malaysian!
I've been to Tamarind Hill now twice, over all I've been very impressed with the food. Decent prices, the chicken curry and kung pow were both very good! The only thing that bothers me is how tiny the space is, it's very crowded, and the seats are very uncomfortable. I highly recommend this restaurant!
Nice Decor, pleasant atmosphere delicious food. I've been here several times and the staff are always great. I've been for dinner with a group of people a few times but it's a bit pricey to do on your own so I prefer to go for lunch when they have a very reasonable menu that is more conducive to parties of 1 or 2. The Roti Canai, Samosas, and Snapper or Halibut cheeks with a caramelized onion sauce are all particularly good.
Loved it!. From the sleek but old-world decor to the attentive service, the fresh spices and generous servings, Tamarind Hill has my two thumbs up.
Our favourite place for taking guests in New West.
Best take out in New West. Hands down, Tamarind Hill is the best takeout in New West. Their ambience is nice if you decide to dine-in.
The roti canai is out of this world. So sad we moved far away and don't get go in much anymore!!!
Definitely give this place a try!
Best in New West?. This restaurant may be my favourite Asian food experience in all of Vancouver to date. Roti canai (flat, fried breads with spicy dipping sauce), Hainanese chicken with two dipping sauces, gorgeous seafoods in your choice of various sauces - all delightful in their own ways, pineapple and seafood fried rice, nasi goreng are all outstanding. The dishes are complex, carefully prepared and as fresh as can be. The beverage menu is also interesting, with a number of fun, non-alcoholic choices such as a mango colada that is a dessert in its own right. I have never been disappointed at Tamarind Hill. Truly, this restaurant would be a gem anywhere and I am thrilled that it is here, in New West.
This is one of my favorite restaurants!! And for anyone going here for the first time,id defenately recomend the calamari...its the best ive ever tried!!!
Spectacular.. We ate at Tamarind Hill tonight, and the meal was amongst the best I've eaten anywhere in the past year. We started with the addictive roti canai (a Malaysian sweet bread served with a peanuty curry sauce for dipping), then shared a gado gado salad (bean sprouts and green beans with small pieces of potato, deep fried tofu and hard-cooked egg, dressed in a peanut dressing). Our mains were the Kung Pow chicken ($12) and the astonishingly generous King Prawns in Gulai, a tumeric/coconut sauce (six massive prawns for $18). Every dish was excellent, although the Kung Pow chicken could have been spicier (we asked for it "extra spicy", then barely broke a sweat on this 30 degree evening). Two of us were very full for $51.00 (no booze), and delighted with our experience at Tamarind Hill. We'll definitely be back soon.
Substance over style. Good food / reasonable price, but not a big fan of the interior decor.
not the most comfortable dining experience, but still worth it for the food.
Went twice. Both times were great. Excellent roti canai. Also loved the soft shell crab. The lamb kari reminded me of khota baru. We will go again!
The unmistakable smell of Southeast Asian spices, boiling coconut milk, and savoury curry powders had me salivating with my first breath through the threshold. Though the foggy smokiness of the place had me confused. If something was burning, at least I couldn’t smell it. I decided to try this restaurant on a recommendation from a fellow Vancouver based food blogger, “Fat Panda”. After seeing a picture of her meal on Instagram and not recognizing the name, I made plans to go. With me was my Malaysian food loving companion. “Fat Panda” swore by the roti and laksa, which happens to be two of my favourite dishes, ones I grew up eating. So naturally I had to take her up on her suggestion. A food blogger doesn’t refer to something as being “the bomb” lightly. It was lunch, the sun was out, and streams of light filtered into the room. This ended up highlighting the overwhelming clouds of smoke that lingered in the air. There was not one server assigned to one table. We had three different
A must-order, the Char Kuey Teow is a mouth-watering medley of stir-fried flat rice noodles, glazed in sweet soy sauce, with generous portions of scrambled egg, fish cakes, sprouts, shrimp and cuttlefish.
I need to learn how to make this salad or come here everyday to have it because it's awesome. This salad is sweet, tart, a bit spicy, crunchy and refreshing! Crunchy from the jicama root, a bit of spice from the dressing but also citrusy at the same time and then there's the sweetness from the mango and papaya. A really great balance of flavours and a favourite of mine for the night.
I really like the tall glasses that they serve these drinks in… they remind me of something that we’d get served while on vacation in some tropical locale.
One of Tamarind Hill’s signature dishes is their Roti Canai ($6) which gets you 2 fluffy and airy pan-fried roti served with their spicy curry dip sauce.
We got here nice and early and got parking right out front. The parking meters don't work, and this is after we already moved our car 3times. We try to do right but the waitress said most of the patrons park in the mall parking lot across and just walk it over. O wells. Tamarind Hill 628 6th Ave, New Westminster BC Tel#: (604) 526-3000 Its super dark inside and someone really packed in the tables didn't they? I could barely see any gaps for people to walk in and around the place. I don't think its a big deal but c'mon! It makes it too uncomfortable to have a conversation or even eat that close to everyone else around you. Our waitress was super nice and friendly. We looked though the menu real quicks and decided to order from their lunch menu. Smaller porti
since the cocohut dining experience, fae has been recommending us to try tamarind hill. jason, fae and i wanted to go once at around 3pm on a saturday but they were closed for lunch until 5pm. fortunately for us, we manged to head there yesterday after ou
Last week my coworkers and I went to Tamarind Hill in New Westminster for a birthday lunch. I have been to Tamarind Hill a few times before, for both lunch and dinner, and it consistently stayed as one of the better
The food was well prepared and tasty, and although our hunger may have played a role, I really liked this place!
There are far too few quality restaurants in New Westminster. There. I've said it. We suck. If it's dinner-time in New West for food-lovers, there are way too many cars heading towards Burnaby (and, of course, Vancouver). I won't even mention Surrey. Oops
On Friday night we visited Tamarind Hill , a Malaysian restaurant in New Westminster, at 6th Ave and 7th Street. I'd been there before, and was very impressed by the flavours. The restuarant itself is small and colourful, and there are pretty touches in t
I first notice this restaurant when doing some banking at the RBC on the corner of 6th Ave and 6th St., because it is literally right beside it. I always said I would go try it, but every time when I am craving Malaysian or Singaporean food, I tend to go
I moved to New Westminster from Burnaby a few years ago. It was obvious this small city packed a lot in its borders. It feels like the province’s diverse population is concentrated in this remarkable city. And of course, one reflection of that is the food
We were all surprised to see how popular Tamarind Hill was on the Saturday night. It was unbelieavably packed that night. Moreover, most of their customers were white which is unexpected for us to learn how popular Malaysian food is. We love the place. Se
