Review The Spud Shack - New Westminster

This food
Really enjoyed our time here yesterday. Quick service and friendly staff. The fish and chips were certainly delicious from the fish batter, to the coleslaw, to the freshly made fries! Likely the best one compare to the one I’ve been going to for years! We ordered the calamari dinner and small plate of fish and chips. Also a great place for affordable all you can eat fish and chips! Would come again and this time I will try their fish tacos!

Great restaurant for fish. I ate combo dinner with cod and haddock and it tastes nice and fresh. I often visit for all you can eat and mostly delicious but sometimes fish is dry. However, price is reasonable. Staff is so kind as well. I love this place. WITH BEER RECOMMENDED

All you can eat fish and chips every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. $14.95 including pop is one good deal! Friendly staffs and clean dining room just make it so much better. Plenty of free parking out front is another bonus.

Seriously the best Cid and halibut and chips we have ever had. The seafood soup was OK. They did forget the housemade Tarter for our takeaway but they did have little packets inside the bag.

Good 'ol fish and chips done well. Not at all greasy. The deep fried oysters we're good too. All COVID-19 safety measures in place. Good service.

Came here for a Sunday lunch and didn’t have to wait that long to be seated. We both ordered Cod which was quite good! The batter for the fish was really nice, and not too battery, too runny. Would come here again for the fish. The chips on the other hand were a little bland, soft and didn’t taste fresh. Not very crispy either. Did not really eat mine. The coleslaw on the other hand was really good! We waited around 20+ minutes for our check, which was a little too long. The servers didn’t seem to pay much attention, not even offering to refill the “bottomless” pop. No service after they asked us how the food was once but walked by several times and we tried to get their attention. We also stacked up our plates and cleaned our table a bit to make it look like we were ready to go. Overall, food wasn’t bad, but the service was subpar so I wouldn’t dine in here again, maybe takeout.

My husband is super picky when it comes to fish and chips, and this was his favourite by far. Great light batter, clean halibut taste and everything was hot and fresh. Poutine was tasty and the battered dogs were great too! Highly recommend.

I haven't been here in years but glad we visited again. This review comes in the middle of the no indoor dining restriction. However, the patio here is open. Dress warmly. The service is quick and friendly and there is constant pick up and take away orders as well. We ordered calamari, fish and chips of course and poutine'd some of the chips. Solid food and prob best fish and chips around. Do yourself a favour and stop by, you won't regret it!

Very big serving. I ordered a medium and I should have ordered a small instead! It taste good for a poutine. My friends ordered the original one and I think ordering this one is more worth it.

I tried their butter chicken poutine. It was absolutely delicious. Perfect if ur craving for comfort food. Highly recommend. Great fusion of indocanadian food.

This is my go-to place for some amazing poutine! Out of the times that I have been here, I have never been disappointed with anything. I am a crazy fry-guy, and I believe that I know good fries when I eat them. I personally prefer fries that aren't salty, even unsalted is great. But these fries are perfectly seasoned and well cooked - not too crispy so you can still get that soft potato-y taste in your mouth, but the initial crisp once you bite into it invites you back for another fry. And another. And then another.

I am a sucker for their Original Poutine. Call me basic but there's something about the simplicity of the ingredients and the marriage of flavours. The gravy is excellent and the cheese curds make the dish an 11/10. Also pictured below is the "Effin' Good Burger," which boasts a prime rib patty. Prepare for a waterfall of juices with that burger. Prime rib = prime flavour.

The service here is great as well, very prompt, but they still fit in time to talk to you. They are all very polite and will ensure that your experience is a good one. As well, I like how the restaurant isn't usually too crowded. You get your food in the span of around 7 minutes, which is perfect if you want a quick bite. And did I mention that it sits right on the skytrain station? That's even better

I transit a lot, so expect me dropping by once in a while - can't have poutine too much, can I?

Having lived in Montreal for so many years, I moved to Vancouver sad that I wasn't going to eat decent poutine ever again until I found this place. Their fries a nice and crispy, their basic gravy is not too salty or either too thin or thick, just perfect. Their variations on the classic poutine are worth trying, I have tried most of them and it's hard to pick a favorite with so many great options.
The place also had one of the best salads in town, but they've changed the salad to a caesar one and it's not the same.
I love that they serve good beers too. This pair with nice decor, it's a nice place to eat at. It's not big at all but recommended nonetheless.

A big thumbs up to the Spud Shack for serving vegetarian poutine. This is one of the few restaurants that serve vegetarian gravy and it tastes really good. Their buffalo chicken poutine is a must try, although I do feel they skimp out on the amount of chicken in it. I always ask for them to add extra (for an additional charge ofcourse).

Best poutines in the lower mainland. Love their squeeky cheese curds - exactly how a poutine should be! I'm amazed by how good the gravy is despite not being made from meat and love that they support local breweries. They also have a bunch of cool bottled pops. Would love to see them get some tea/coffee or other drinks for the non-pop drinkers like myself. The music, staff and overall environment is always rad.

Maybe I came here on on off day but it was terrible.. my burger took almost 20 min to make, no wonder it was burnt, tough and dry. When I asked the cook if they had forgotten about me (since more than a half dozen poutines came up before my order) he rudely told me the burger takes the longest of any other menu item. After it finally was ready there was nothing more than a pile of bacon bits and 2 long pickles thrown on top, what a mess for $12. Not only that, the side of fries they gave me was pitiful, each were no longer than 2 inches long, definitely all from the bottom of the bag.

They're known for poutines here so maybe I shouldn't have gone against the grain and just ordered one of them; however, most of the poutines I saw at other tables didn't look the greatest. The cheese they layered underneath wasn't melted and the amount of sauce made most of the fries soggy.

They have craft beers on tap aswell but the two I tried were brutal, would be better off serving some more well known beers if the tap selection is limited.
Achaiah
A good variety of hearty Poutine

Good smoked meats and pulled meats.

The Montreal smoked is a good one to try if you like corned beef. They have sandwiches as well.
Mrsfluffy77
My favorite poutine place! Love the different choices for poutine. ( I usually get the original poutine and a root beer). The portions are awesome. I love how the use actual cheese curds :) The staff are friendly. I would recommend it to anyone.

The Spud Shack is a great little hole in the wall.

I have had the:

-regular poutine
-fish and chips (cod)
-quinoa burger

My personal favourite is the poutine. The quantity you get for the price is exceptional. Not just in fries, but gravy and cheese curds.

I have stayed clear from deep fried fish since one experience I had a super overdone cod once and have been hesitant ever since to get it again.

All in all one of the best poutine spots I have had to date.

Get the large poutine it's worth it!

Awesome upbeat environment/atmosphere. The poutine is so delicious. Fun beverage options (including alcoholic beverages). It is a bit of a splurge price wise but the quality makes it worth it

Small little place by the sky train station. Its a self serve resto so cleanliness can be an issue. Burgers are soso. Poutines are good though. Can choose from 3 sizes (s,m,l) and they give plenty of toppings. A friend and I shared 2 mediums and couldn't finish. They also serve alcohol.

Personally, I'm not a huge poutine fan, but this place still hit the spot!

Food: I recommend original poutine and the pulled pork, definitely can't go wrong with those! However my friend's buffalo chicken poutine and jambalaya poutine were drench with sauce and the fries turned to mush.

Ambiance: very dark but still a decent place to chat and has a nice water cooler

Service: they are really kind!

Note: Mondays is half priced off ORIGINAL poutine. If you get a special poutine it's about 2 bucks off.

Spud Shack is by far one of my favourite places for poutine, and I've been here at least three four times now.

Their poutines come in different sizes and toppings, as well as preset combinations. I usually go with the Original Poutine, but I also tried The Big V the other day.

The fries are crispy, cheese curds are squeaky and the warm gravy melds everything together, which makes up the perfect Original Poutine. (4/5) The Big V is topped with vegetarian chili and green onions, and the fresh greens as well as acidity from the tomatoes in the chili balances the richness of the dish. (4.5/5)

The restaurant works as a order and pick up fashion. It's actually a bar so I imagine it getting busier late at night, but located right next to the platform of the New Westminster skytrain, it's a convenient spot to grab some quick bites as well.

They also have a points system on their app where you redeem points for different discounts and rewards!

Food: 4.5/5
Service: n/a
Value: 3/5
Ambiance: 3/5

My ultimate favourite place that keeps me coming back to New West I love everything about the Spud Shack! It's cozy and small and self-service keeps it casual and easy-going. The manager is such a cool guy too. Their frites are simply the best - crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside with just enough flavour in them plain and a healthy dose of gravy and sauce. Cheese curds give me life! Squeaky and half melted but half solid, just the way it should be. These guys KNOW poutine! And don't forget the sick Monday poutine deals - could it get any better?! The only thing that made me sad was that they took off the Cowboy Steak Sandwich from the menu. I'm just a college kid with a college wage and a part-time job but that sandwich was so worth $15. Bring it back please!!
Sean L.
Had a medium original poutine the fries were perfectly cooked and the gravy was delicious. The inside of the place is small and cozy but not too bad if you want to dine in. The beer selection is decent but nothing to out there is you are looking to try new and exotic beer.

Consistent and delicious. A solid variety of options and always fast. Not a ton of seating but it rotates through quickly. Perfect quick meal before a movie!
TheHappySloths
Tried The Hero Poutine (meatballs & marinara) and I gotta say, this is some good stuff (one of the best poutine I've had)! The fries are crispy and crunchy and the cheese curds are super squeaky. Even the meatballs are beautifully seasoned....

HOWEVER, there was WAY TOO MUCH sauce, making everything SUPER salty. I couldn't even finish my small sized portion because it just got way too intense.
With that said, I would definitely visit again and perhaps ask for less sauce and gravy.

Veggie poutine. Awesome place for us vegetarians. Personally for me this is better than fritz downtown. Fries are crispy and that Gravy... Ooolala

The Spud Shack Fry Co. has (among other things), "poutines" -- fries with stuff on them. It's kind of like Chinese noodles at a budget Chinese restaurant -- lots of cheap carbs with a pile of stuff on top. It's a small, dim place with simple seating. They are presently slightly understaffed, so don't expect all tables to be wiped down during or shortly after their dinner rush.

This is my local go-to poutine place, and I'm usually happy with the food. For the non-poutine eats I've tried the Cod and Frites (pretty good) and the Effin Good Burger (pretty effin good). For poutine I've tried the Original, the Baked Potato, the Night Market, the Jamba... actually I think I've tried more options off my fiance's plate but regardless, all the poutine choices are a hit. The only minor con is that the cheese curds are served still a bit solid and cold, but nothing a little mix with hot gravy won't fix!

On a side note in regards to service, my fiance ordered take out from here following my discharge from the hospital, I had had my baby a few days earlier but had to leave him in the NICU for precautionary measures (nothing like a post-labour stress-relieving poutine fix...) and when the owner found out, he made our order complimentary. Was a very sweet gesture in a time of darkness!

One of my favourite places in New West and one of the top 3 poutine you'll find in Metro Vancouver. Some of them aren't my taste, like the night market, but I can always go for their buffalo chicken poutine which is perfect. The staff are friendly and they have great beer choices. Make sure to use loyaltree to get $10 off after you spend $100 there; I've got around $50 free over the past two years.

I can not rave about this place enough. Generous portions, the poutine is loaded with cheese and gravy. Do not let the vegetarian aspect of the gravy scare you, this stuff is better then all the authentic ones I have ever tried. Good selection of soda's and craft beers. Their dipping sauces are awesome. Worth a stop in to try it, but come hungry!

I went yesterday for a little snack and I have to say I wasn't impressed at all. The fries and sauces were very bland and there was so much on the poutine that it was almost a soup. The restaurant was also very dirty and the self serve ketchup was broken which squirted all over my bare foot/sandal.. I'm sure going here after drinking at a pub would be fantastic but I won't be going back sober.

Bad food bad owner. This place has under par food for outrageous prices, and to top off the bad food, the service was horribble. The owner was rude and cheap, giving me Only half of the coupons discount ! Essentially trying to rip me off. this establishment does not desrve your money. The fish burger I had was dry and tastless making me wish I went to cockney Kings just down the block.

Delicious poutines. Delicious.... Enough said.

Best poutine!!!. The poutine here is perfect! A nice dose of gravy, fries that are crispy and don't get soggy! If you go in on Mondays, poutine a are half price.

I've read some bad reviews about the manager, Dan. I've never had any problems with him. He's sassy and fun with regular customers.

They also have a great loyalty program set up through Loyaltree.
Photastic
Terrible manager. The food at Spud Shack is okay. Not great or anything special. The poutine cheese is often still very cold and not melted. Not how I like my poutines. The one time I had just the fries from there they were far too salty. However 'okay' the food is, I don't think I'll ever return due to the rudeness of the manager Dan. He was unprofessional and rude to customers and employees.

Poutine with Bacon, Sour Cream, and Chives. So addictively delicious.

Keep up the good work. This place is amazing!!

Eff'Ing Great Burger. Fabulous burger and adaptable to all tastes. Not just good for New West but good for all Vancouver!

Good Food, Fair Prices, Funky/Trendy Atmosphere. I'll start this off by saying that I live and, well, mostly eat, in Victoria B.C., however I found myself in New West a few weeks back, and I decided to give this place a shot based on the UrbanSpoon Reviews I had looked up on my phone.

I'll keep this review short and sweet, and split based on food item.

POUTINE: I had the...hmm, whichever one comes with sour cream, bacon bits, and green onion (though the menu said chives...yes, there is a difference). The fries were crispy, the gravy tasty, and the amount of cheese curds acceptable. I will note that the curds were quite cold, maybe even frozen. However, the warm fries and gravy eventually heated them up to a sufficient level. All in all GOOD. Not Great, but a solid GOOD.

BURGER: I had the effing good burger, and though it wasn't 'effing' good, it was 'pretty' good. I found it to be a bit messy and maybe a little too drenched in BBQ sauce for my tastes, but I couldn't really complain, my brain and tongue were enjoying the cacophony of flavours and textures going on, and the poutine and beer helped mellow out the gobs of BBQ sauce drenching my patty. I would give this burger an AVERAGE rating. It's not necessarily 'high-end', and it isn't fast food. It's somewhere in the realm of a White Spot burger with a little more flair and an angrier name.

BEER: I loved the selection and I feel like they covered their bases quite well. I chose the Whistler Powder Mountain Lager they had on draft and it hit the spot. The pint was served in a nice tall glass, and I drained every sip happily. Beer = GOOD...it's hard to mess this one up, but you'd be surprised.

All in all, NOT the BEST I've had, but a very GOOD place to go to for poutine/pub fair with a quirky sense of style and a cool, albeit louder, atmosphere. If I'm ever back in New West, this is my first stop for poutine!
Annoyomous
Worst place ever!!! Only living off their reputation and location!!!! Total waste of money!!! Spebt over $20 for a burger and fries for them to be BURNT and crumbs of potatoes!!! Other people must have had staff that were actually polite and cared about their guests rather than rude waitresses and a chef that BURNS all the food. Good luck continuing your high rates and horrible services. You won't last long if it keeps it up.

Had Effin' Good Burger, Yam Oat Quinoa Burger, Poutine and Fries with Andalusia sauce. AMAZING! Best fries in the lower mainland, incredible sauce, perfect curds and amazing taste and texture combination. A definite revisit!

Horrible burgers!!!! Literally burnt and un-eatable. Only ate it cuz we were totally hungry and thought It was the edges!!!! Poutine was medicore and little bits of busted down fries and sad left overs. Only thing good was my Betty which was in a can and untouched. Two thumbs down!!!!! Living on location convenience!!!

The owner of this place is awesome and I will go back here not just for the food but for going above and beyond. Aside from fries I needed a coffee but they do not serve coffee but said I could "bring one in". Instead he walked across to Starbucks to get me a coffe and then refused to take money. I couldn't believe service like this exists here anymore.
Marshall Fulton Soper
The staff are super friendly and polite with a great sense of humour and fast on the fries. I ordered a to go over the phone and it was ready in six minutes! One of my all time favourite establishments!
Natassia B
Delish! Loved it. Next time a small poutine will do JUST fine.

Cost Effective, Nice Place... a little cramped. While I'm not as much of a foodie as some people and haven't sampled loads of places, I have to say the fries at Spud Shack were some of the best I've ever had. They take the cake for the best fries I've had in the lower mainland.

The prices are quite nice, though there doesn't seem to be an increase in units per dollar as you spend more... the jumbo size fries for $8 doesn't seem to have any more than 2 orders of the medium fries for $4 each. Not a huge deal, but it would be nice to see jumbo take things to the next level and serve as somewhat of a party tray. On the topic of prices however, the last time I went there we asked for a side of gravy... boy do you get one - it was probably roughly a cup of gravy and they only charged about a buck extra for it. The gravy and their poutine is quite nice.

The only complaint I have is it's not very spacious... it's a great place to stop with a friend when you're out for a movie or just in the area, but I wouldn't go here with a party or even moderate sized group of people. The shop itself is nice, though... and I really like the cutout in the tables to hold your fries!

Did I mention they make good fries? I'd recommend going here.

I just recently discovered this little gem of a restaurant.
And may i just say, they have the BEST FRIES I HAVE EVER TASTED!!!
Oh my gosh I am in fry heaven.
My favourite sauce that they have is the Parmesan mayo that you can buy for an additional $1, I've tried about 5 of the sauces and that one is definitely my favourite!
I love how the owner roams around the place and asks everyone how they ate enjoying their meal, and is super pleasant and professional.
Best part of it all is they have a loyalty program!!!

Just follow the instructions on the bottom of the sales receipt and you get a free small fry just for signing up!
Heck yes!

Definitely my new favourite place to eat!

Great burger. Yum.. Yes, this was a really good burger, made meticulously with love and attention. Juicy, big and full of flavour. I especially loved the tomato jam. Fries are also very good, but what really makes them is the selection of tasty mayos for dippins. I had the Andalusian and the Dutch mayo, which was a zestier, sweeter version (possibly mustardy?). So, if you have a hankering for a good burger, I recommend this joint. Service was great as well.

Amazing burger. I'd been to Spud Shack a couple of times before, naturally eating fries and poutine with friends. About a month ago though I thought I'd try the the Eff'in Good Burger from their menu, and wow had I been missing out. This might be the best burger I've had in the lower mainland. Juicy, perfectly cooked, great bun and excellent fresh toppings. If you like a good burger, you've gotta try what they're making at Spud Shack.

And of course it comes with their properly delicious fries.
Unonym
Portions too small for the price. I ordered a small poutine and a large salad. The large salad was the same size as the small poutine, but double the price. The gravy was not as good as I expected. My husband paid $11 for a sandwich, no sides. Quality is there, but not the value. Not planning to go there again. Belgian Fries is superior.
Laura
Guys the burger is FANTASTIC, easily the best outside of Vancouver but at this point I can't say where a burger really tasted better in Vancouver proper.
Mary Sheridan
Awesome fries. Do not be fooled by the exterior or location, if fries could be made gourmet, this is the place that did it. The poutine is awesome, and the gravy is gluten free. Their craft beer selection is fantastic, and the eft**ng good burger most definitely lives up to its name.

Amazing Experience. I never write reviews for food establishments but I felt I had to for Spud Shack. Seeing as there is no decent poutinerie/fry place (in my opinion) in the Burnaby/New West area where I’m from, I had to give this place a try.

Long story short, I have never met such an accommodating and friendly management team. Had some nice friendly small talk with them and ended up with a free round of drinks bought by what I think was the management team as they were the guys setting up the Christmas decor.

As far as food goes, I can't claim to be either a poutine or burger expert. I did get both and I would say I liked the burger, and really enjoyed the poutine. In my opinion, I would put it one of the best in the Lower Mainland. I enjoy the poutinerie places in Downtown Vancouver, and I would say Spud Shack compares nicely, so take my opinion for whatever it’s worth.

Would definitely come back.

Bad choice. Cold ,greasey , tasteless and over priced ... Won't eat here !!!,...poor service... Food tastes like it was microwaved !!!

Less than Satisfied. Went there once with my daughter late at night and it was jam packed. It is a neat concept. Our fries seemed to be the short fries from the end of a batch -- and with how busy they were it didn't surprise me. When we left they had put a sign on the door fries sold out.
I went back another time and ordered halibut and chips. It was really bad. The fish was overcooked. So at first I was eating it, and then I decided if I removed the crust it wouldn't be so bad -- I was super hungry and on a bus transfer -- so no time to complain and wait for a fresh piece. When i removed the crust, I really seen how dry it was. It was chewier than beef. It came apart in strands, or strings. It was a total waste of money and I don't know why I didn't ask for my money back.
You would also think seeing as Fries are their specialty that they could use fresh instead of frozen fries. - Won't be going again.
G.H.
Love it. I really love poutine, and I have to say that Spud Shack is my new benchmark. You just can't beat their poutine...it's what I miss most about moving away from New West. Usually you get a good poutine if the fries are good, or the gravy is good, or they somehow got some decent cheese on there. Well this place has probably perfected the belgian fried potato, the gravy actually has a depth of flavour, and the cheese is as it should be. Plus they've got a very respectable beer (local as well as Belgian) and soda list to pair with what they have to offer. The Chef and his staff are all very nice, genuinely interested in your opinion of the food and restaurant.
I love this place, please give it a try if you like Quebecois comfort food and you are anywhere nearby.
Keep it up Spud Shack, you rock!
Brewji
My girlfriend and I always passed by this place and joked about how their sign always said "best poutine", but we didn't think New West had the kind of capability to hold a "best of" anything food place.

You know what? Their poutine is up there, tied for first with my other all time favourite poutine. Trust me, I used to have a 46 inch waist an weigh over 250 pounds before I dropped 85 (that's another story), so I know my poutine.

The fries are cooked fresh, to say the least. Each fry is thick cut, crispy, and cooked to perfection. There is not a single soggy or unwanted fry in all of the bowl. This alone is worth the $6.50 for the medium. The gravy they pour on is a good medium-bodied beef gravy, and it's a generous portion. They don't skimp on anything here. Lastly the cheese curds are a great texture, as they melt at the right pace and aren't too offensive on their own either.

Overall tied for best poutine outside of Quebec. And yes, I've been to Quebec, and Frenchie's, and almost every other poutine joint in Vancouver.

Highly recommended. I was actually talking to the owner about pairing his food with beer. He told me to email him. I should get on that!

I really want to try something else next time. Maybe the fish and chips with one of their unique $1 dips, really craving that actually.

Cheers!

Stopped in for a bite after reading many of the great reviews. I stuck to the basic Poutine to go. It was quite busy

The flavour of the poutine was spot on, not too salty but delicious. I would however note that as noted in another review, the cheese doesn't seem to melt while eating. I'd say its the best poutine I have had if the cheese was a bit hit and gooey. Otherwise still very good. Check it out!
Marlo Kelch
Fries were unreal, a lil on the pricy side but worth it, I had the halibut and fries the halibut was pretty decent but the tarter sauce not so much. Forsure get one of the sauces for the fries!
Juliette
Crispy Fries. Since it was my first time coming I got a small poutine. These are the crispiest fries I've ever had. The fries at the bottom that were coated by the gravy, which wasn't anything special to me, were surpringly still crispy when I got to the bottom of the bowl. The cheese curds were a bit cold but it's probably because they were in the fridge right before they served it to me. I think there should have been more cheese curds and none of them melted in my poutine.

Food aside, the server on that day wasn't very friendly. It was fairly early when I went in and no one else was in the restaurant at the time. When I walked into the restaurant I saw the guy cast a glance at me but continued to work on whatever he was doing before coming to serve me. Keep in mind I'm a teenager and I have seen the "oh gosh it's a teenager look" many times and he definitely gave me that look. And it's obvious he only treated me that way because while I was eating a man walked in and he immediately he went over to help him.

Considering I had to take the bus and skytrain for more than an hour to get here I don't think I'll be coming back anytime soon even though the fries are great.
Iris
Interesting Sauces. Fries felt a little too oily for my preference but the sauce choices were amazingly delicious. Had the miso mayo and Anadalusia mayo. Anadalusia is a must try! Definitely will go back to try their other stuff on the menu.

Here for Poutine Challenge. Trying out the Porktine and it was alright cause I'm not a big fan of bacon but everything was fine.

Not the most spacious place especially by the Skytrain so be wary of that when coming during peak hours.
Carole Lyne
Love the gargoyles. It was worth the trip. excellent French fries, or should I say Belgian Fries. I loved the selection and the freshness of the fish. The Belgian beer was delicious. The decor is like stepping into an other world, especially with the finishing touch of the gargoyles.

Nice place to stop in for a snack. Cozy place with friendly staff. I had the poutine, it was done nice and very tasty. Good local place to go to instead of traveling downtown to fix your craving.

Two craps on tap but good bottle selection. These frites really kick ass...as light-tasting and fresh as frites can be.

Walk off New Westminster Skytrain Station and you might miss a secret casual dining spot obscured by the metal scaffolding that currently dominates the station’s visual qualities. Driving to New Westminster on a particularly hot afternoon for a Vancouverite, I arrived at The Spud Shack , seeking shelter from the sweltering-hot rays. The Spud Shack is known for their Belgian frites , which, in layman’s terms, are specialty fries that are fried twice. Dan Close, owner and Red Seal chef of The Spud Shack, explained to me the meticulous process that involved soaking, draining, blanching, and deep-frying these Kennebec potatoes. New batches of Belgian frites are made every day, if that doesn’t make you appreciative of the prep work the kitchen goes through on a daily basis to serve the public a quality cone of fries. The establishment has a cozy chic ambiance to it, a remarkable feat to pull off when you consider the location of The Spud Shack. You don’t expect such a gentrified dine-in/tak

As a kid growing up in Van, the skytrain was an all too daily occurrence in my life LOL. Back then, the only food you could get near transit was a greasy ol' slice of pizza, a limpy old salad (gross) or a messy cold cut ham sandwich from the local coffee shop. Enter the 2011 (or was it 2012?) gentrification of the New West skytrain station, mediocre skytrain food is a thing of the past! Spud Shack is the first restaurant you see when you get off of the skytrain, it's tiny, and easy to miss! If you don't transit regularly you probably don't even know that this place exists LOL. The Spud Shack is famous for their delicious, hearty, pub food, and *supposedly* makes the best poutine in New West! Btw, if you drive you can park downstairs in the safeway parking lot LOL! Or you can just take the skytrain ;) SIGNATURE DISHES Spud Shack's is famous for their poutine and their frites! Their fries, or Belgian frites as they call it, are made fresh daily in house! They also have a ton of awesome dipping sauces that you can order separately for dipping! The Spud also has a extensive drink menu that goes perfectly with their food! SERVICE 2 /5 stars There's no table service at the Spud Shack because it's a two person operation! You order and pay at the front counter, and when the food is ready, they'll call out your order! I got my food fairly quickly, at the same time, about 10 mins after I had ordered! AMBIANCE - Casual The Spud Shack is fairly small, with only 8 tables or so tables! The interior is made out of rustic wood, with bold red chairs, and mirrors lining the walls. PRICE - $/ $$ /$$$ The Spud Shack is relatively affordable with frites starting at $2.50, and the poutines start at $5 for a small! The sandwiches and burgers are pricier at $12 , but all the sandwiches come with side of frites, which is awesome, so you don't have to order it separately! VALUE - Poor/Okay/ Good /Great For the price, the portion sizes are huge, and you definitely get what you

When I found out about Spud Shack, a little joint located at the New Westminster skytrain station, I was pretty excited to introduce my friend to what may possibly be one of the best places for poutines. She loves her poutines and always orders them. So, after claiming that she will love me even more for where I am about to take her for a late night snack, she says "poutines? I don't even like them". LOL what? Yeah, apparently every time she grabs some at the food court or the movie theatre it is because there is nothing else she wants. Oh well, already paid for parking and I wanted to try this place out too, so too bad for her. I even raved about this "surprise" place to her for days too! SALMON, PULLED PORK POUTINE, BUFFALO CHICKEN WITH RANCH DRESSING POUTINE, MONTREAL SMOKED MEAT AND SMALL FRITES . BOYLAN CREAM SODA ($2.75) AND WATER. FRITES, SMALL ($2.75). Walking in, I was surprised at the high ceiling and well ventilated restaurant which is always appreciated for a small joint k

A friend has been raving about this place and wanted me to write about it for my blog. So here I was at "Spud Shack", about to meet all my potato needs. "Spud Shack", is conveniently located just off the eastbound platform at the New Westminster skytrain station. One of many new food stops and goods stores in the adjacent new mall. The government has spent money on this development project to breathe new life, into what was once our capital. This potato paradise plays off its location, offering those just off school or work a great place to grab a quick and delicious snack. On a Saturday afternoon the restaurant had only a few patrons trickling in. But I can imagine the crowds on a weekday from 4-5pm. Hungry and grumpy on their commute home. For the health conscious this is not your go to, everything is deep fried and covered with gravy, cheese, mayo, or chocolate. But for those in need of a cheering up after a long day, nothing is more comforting than greasy fries and a pint of co

It has been just over a year since The Spud Shack Fry Co opened up shop in the New Westminster Skytrain station so I thought I would drop by to see how the year went for the award winning poutine masters.

I really enjoyed my Arugula Salad and poutine. Now that I think back, I wish we had come out here for another lunch before my project work ended.

I was in my own little fry heaven and ignorning everything else.

The real mark of a poutine resturant is their original poutine without all the fancy toppings and Spud Shack makes a fantastic one. The fries are crispy, the sauce is flavourful without being too salty and the cheese is amazing. While the traditional poutine is made with “squeaky” cheese curds that don’t melt, Chef Close told me he had to balance traditional poutine purity with west coast sensibilities.

In the heart of New Westminster there’s a new development called The Shops at New West Station. This location is particularly special due to the close proximity of the skytrain station. This is where you’ll find The Spud Shack Fry Co. I’m not gonna lie, when I first heard of the Spud Shack Fry Co. I chalked them up as another deep fried, late night, pub type place and nothing more. Talking about not judging a book by its cover. The Spud Shack is much more than that, starting with owner/chef Dan Close. With a resume that includes the Fairmont Hotel and Cactus Club, Dan is no stranger to the hospitality game. He’s also a certified Red Seal Chef. The Spud Shack Fry Co. is his first solo concept, one he’s very proud of. “We don’t take shortcuts” says Dan. “All our food is locally sourced when possible. We start each order with potatoes that we cut in house, soak for 5-6 hours then flash fry and made to order”. The fries are the foundation of the menu, so of course we had to try some. We st

The Spud Shack Fry Co is located inside the New Westminster Skytrain station. They open up everyday at noon and serve up twice cooked Belgian Frites and artisan draught beers. They have $5 happy hour on the weekdays from 2pm – 6pm, where you can choose between select beers, wine or a medium poutine. It’s literally a few steps from the platform. Great for a quick stop to grab a bite. Looking at their menu, I was impressed by the amount of beers they had available. They also have a variety of poutines too. They have the usual poutines and then creative ones like ‘The Night Market’, ‘The Squealer’, and ‘The Brat’. There aren’t too any seats, but good size for groups of 2’s or 4’s. I tried a flight of a few of their different beers and its great they are using some pretty local craft brewers like Steel & Oak, Whistler Brewing, and Four Winds Brewing.

The good news is that Spud Shack delivers with their poutine ($5-$9). These are absolutely stunning fries. Not only are they well-seasoned and delicious but they’re indeed consistently crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

New Westminster’s Skytrain station platform is home to The Spud Shack Fry Co., a fully licensed fry shop with a menu that reads like a sports bar: burgers, sandwiches, salads, and of course — fries. The slickly decorated, small-ish eatery is tucked away behind throwback 80s inspired signage.
