Review Piper's Pub - Nanaimo

Summer Time
What a delightful neighbourhood pub. My first time there was met by friendly, efficient and caring staff. Menu items can be modified, dishes are carefully prepared and made from scratch.... There is a delightful crowd that is welcoming and there's just an over all feel of comfort and ease in this establishment. Large spaces to chill with good vibes and can easily accommodate large groups if needed, will be returning to this awesome neighborhood pub with a great selection of local taps to quench one's appetite

They make a great caesar, food is ok. Doesn’t have a cozy warm pub feel though. 5-22 Caesar salad good, steak bites more tasty than tender but ok.

Only good thing about this pub was dogs allowed on the patio. Food was basic, not particularly good value and.the service was horrible. After waiting 15 minutes to get a drink, we never saw the server again. We had to get the attention of a table clearer to take a food order. Then again we had we had to do the same for a bill. Was overcharged for drinks. Will not be going again.

Oh how much potential this place has as a local Lunch & Dinner spot for the Hammond Bay community. Unfortunately it's always squashed by the small skinny waitress with the dark bun pulled too tight. 4 separate times I had to get up from the outside patio and get my missing items. Forgot my Beer, then after 20 minutes and she not coming back to check on my food, I went to get it from the bar tender inside. She also forgot my Gravy, my friend's Wine (the second glass after the first one she brought me was spoiled), and walking by multiple times without clearing our numerous dishes. Reluctantly I have her a 10$ tip because I have morals, but it hurt to give it to her. I feel without her, the place would run much more smoothly. Rumour has it there's new management coming soon, and I say first thing as new management is to fire her.

Nice set up. Staff were all pleasant. Good was ok. Tasty, but not very hot. I'll go back for sure though. Pretty busy place, especially with all the housing and only one pub in the area.

Went here on a rainy night for supper. Lots of people in, always a good sign! Had our concerns when the server forgot our clamato juice with our liquor order, didn't know what the soup of the day was and didn't right our order down, but it wasn't justified. The food was delicious and exactly what we ordered. The French onion soup was one of the best that I've had, even the hubby liked it and he hates onions! The steak was cooked just the way I like and was very tender. Hubby had the crispy chicken clubhouse and aside from the bread not being toasted enough for him, he said it was quite good. Yam fries were an upgrade from regular fries for $3 more and they were good and plentiful. I had a glass of house white wine and hubby had a bottle of beer and clamato. Total with taxes but before tip was just over $55. Definitely going back here.

Wednesday nights are an absolute gong show if you want food. Waited an hour and a half for food and found out it still wasn't being made so we left. Drink's were okay. Service was mediocre, only because they need more staff for Wednesdays. Ridiculous! Won't be back!

Slooooooooooooooow service AND a hair in my food. Went early on a Saturday. Service was ridiculously slow despite the fact the place was not even half full. Eventually just went up to the bar to get our drinks. Salmon was (the evening’s special) was cooked to absolute death and then I found a hair underneath it. Hard pass on this place.

Had dinner with family and friend Saturday evening (march 3rd). Every one in the group seem to enjoy the food, although my dish (salmon) was probably under the eating lamps a little long. The noise level was so high that it made it difficult to converse with the person sitting at the other end of the table, there were 6 of us so we were not far apart. My wife, who has a low voice level could not communicate at all. I do not plan to return, especially with my wife. If I may I would suggest you install some sound level reducing, such as hanging banners from the ceiling.

Thank you. I was please about the re-opening but unfortunately it won' be for me, for now at least.

New Management. I have been here a few times now for lunch and will continue to do so. Beef dip, fish & chips, and crispy chicken burger were all spot on. Fries are cut in house and seasoned just perfectly. Great food!

Worst Fish and Chips I ever had. Uncooked fish. Both pieces. When I complained I got 1 piece which was smaller than either of the two pieces. I asked to take the new piece home and the waitress simply took it away and did not bring it back.

I used to like pipers. Haven't been for a while. Will avoid it in future.

Great service. Horrendous food quality. If the onions served to me on my burger were in my fridge, they'd be in the compost - and that's where it looked like they came from. Same goes for the cucumber slices, dehydrated & skin wrinkling. The burger bun was so surprisingly stale that I accidentally coughed it up & onto the table upon the first bite. Never mind the burger was not made with ingredients promised on the menu. Overall, damn wish I set it back & ate somewhere else. I wholly regret wasting my money here & remain flabbergasted that anyone, nevermind a cook, would send that out to a paying customer.

Bad Service...lost customers. We went here for dinner and drinks, it was very busy, it took a while for our drink order to be taken and longer for our food order. The shocker was our foor arrvied in 2 min, we were shocked, how could this food be freshly prepaired that fast, the food was below average and when some friends showed up for drinks after, the service was a stand still, we always had to wave or go get someone to take our order. We had to pay at the bar as our server was no where to be found. Very poor service, won't be returning.

Horrible Service!. On our last vist, we hot Pipers for a few drinks, it was before dinner and we were the only one's in the bar, we had to wait, and wit for our beer to arrive, and then when we wanted more, there was no one around to service us, when we wanted to pay, we could not find our server and had to flag down a differant server to get out server. What a joke, for a place that had no customers but us, how can you not look after them! This is not the fist time we have experianced this and it will be some time before returning.

Overall Great Place to Eat and Have a Drink. I have frequented this Pub many, many times and have left on a positive note most times but there were a few exceptions..........

The service here is great whenever I have stopped in - not to mention the food, but a few disappointments have occurred.
If you live in Nanaimo (like I do) you realize that there is ALOT of competition for your business - if you are just passing thru then you most likely will not realize this, but there are great deals to be had in terms of food if you start looking. So in saying this Pipers does a great job in looking for your business - for example - Mondays are now 9.95 for a steak sandwich, Tues. is 6.95 for a homemade burger and homemade fries (Yes Finally HOME CUT FRIES no more frozen fries),Thurs. cheap wings, and Friday/Sat. nights are Prime Rib staring at 14.95 for 8oz. cut.

As far as food goes I can say this - the Wings are awesome - great value for your buck!!! I have eaten wings all over and these are some of the best - 1lb of big juicy wings with your choice of sauces for around 10bucks, and cheaper on Thursdays.
The Prime Rib is by far one of the best I have ever had (and i grew up in Alberta where beef is king) - always tender, great veggies, awesome mashed potatoes (probably garlic cream cheese mashed), and super Au Jus (more of a dark gravy) - this plate would set you back 25.00 plus dollars most places i have been...

Now for a few negative things - maybe things have changed but i did order a Monte Cristo Sandwich which was advertised in the menu as having Fresh Roasted Turkey - well upon receiving my sandwich it was Not Fresh Roasted Turkey but SANDWICH MEAT all for a top dollar price - not cool......the server had no explanation when i brought this to her attention - if you claim one thing then present another then shame on you. Bad freezer fries!!!! - these have since been phased out for fresh cut - good on ya Pipers!!!!.....The Tomato Basil soup whenever it is offered is more of a lumpy puree than anything, and not a traditional soup as we know it to be. The last thing I can knock Pipers for is lack of kitchen attention - meaning if I ask for a Medium Rare Steak I should not get a WELL DONE STEAK - this type of mistake has happened to myself (not just steak per say) more than a few times, and puts the diner in a awkward position as he/she must either make a point of the mistake or just eat it - alot of diners feel embarrassed by complaining or sending food back to the kitchen. Also I think the new menu prices for certain items have been raised to a ridiculous amount - 1pc fish and chips used to be 11.00 - now 14.00, a new item on the menu of a meatball sub is 13.00 or so dollars - just to name a few.

In Closing I would like to say that Pipers does offer value for your buck overall with few negative points.

I

Nice pub but.... I was disappointed in the food, we had burgers and fries and while the burger was decent we couldn't help but notice the fries were the frozen variety not the fresh. If they buy the fries in a bag from McCains (or some other similar supplier) does that also mean they get their fish from a box with a captain on it? or their salad from a bag? A pub should never sell frozen fries, that is the domain of the fast food restaurants.

Not worth the prices. If the food was good, it would have been worth the price. Halibut dried out. Cold frys. Odd because usually the fat that caused the dry, would heat the frys! Rubin sandwich could have been made my a 6 year old with a couple of instructions. $12 for dried out toast and minimal ingriedients. Not busy there, now you know why. People don't come for the food. Won't be back. At McDonalds at least you know what you will get for you money.

A Great Pub With Great Food!. Pipers is our favorite place to go with our friends to have a great time. Either to sip a few draughts or for wing night on Thursdays, this is our "go to" place! The service is fantastic along with the decor and wall to wall big screens to catch all the hockey, football and UFC events. I highly recommend Pipers Pub!

My favorite pub. Great service, excellent food, good choice of beer and drinks, nice atmosphere, friendly staff and clean washrooms all at a reasonably price.
They also have a cold beer & wine store, coffee shop and Co-Op food store on premises (handy)

Location, servers, drinks and food great! But owners/managers need to know their customers a lot better, learn about smooshing.

Nice pub. We like Piper's - the menu is good pub food, the drinks are reasonable, the decor is lovely - it's a pub that is comfortable to sit in, have a meal, meet some friends. My only request would be that they bring back the Jackson-Triggs merlot as one of the wines they carry.
