Review The Old City Station Pub - Nanaimo

Adam Dewey
Great food, great atmosphere, and great service. My wife has some food allergies and the Waitress was very accommodating and made suggestions on what would be good alternatives to her.

Amazing sport/gastro pub just around the corner. If you enjoy watching sports and drinking wide selection of draft beers, this is for you. I was lucky to be here on Tuesday - Taco Tuesday! Nice tacos with only 2,5$ each. This will be my regular pub in the future in Nanaimo!

Great ambience and spacious. Has upper deck for seating. Friendly staff and affordable. Food tasted great. Has parking spot in front. Great place to watch games and spend time with friends. Great selection of drinks.

My husband and I were on a day-trip to the island. We stopped at the Old City pub on our way back to the ferry. We arrived and were seated at 1:15pm. The waitress was polite and professional. She took our drink and food orders right away. We did receive our drinks promptly but proceeded to wait another 55 min without getting our food. At 2:10, with no food in sight, and afraid we are going to miss the ferry for Vancouver, we paid for our drinks and left without eating. The waitress apologized and offered to pay for our drinks which we declined as it was obviously not her fault the kitchen had failed to cook an order of chicken wings and two entrees in 55 min.

Our server named Chrystal, was so awesome! She made time for us and explained some of the menu items. The beer specials were the best I've seen all summer. The inside of this place has surprisingly massive. We were told it had been recently renovated and I would love to go back.

Wow! Great prices for food and drinks! The staff always take great care of us and are super friendly 10/10! Props to the bartenders, waitresses, cooks and management, what a stellar bunch! My go-to is a cesar and chicken tacos, extra saucy edition :)

Needs more training for wait staff. When we arrived, a group was hanging out chatting at the bar. We would get the odd walk by or someone would glance. Right when we were about to leave someone came over to seat us. Service at our table wasn’t great either. Took 30 minutes to place a food order. Even when waving down our server she would walk past, even making eye contact. On a positive side, the food was good. But not sure if it’s enough to go back.

Service was very good but if you are looking for Gluten Free food this is not the place to eat. I had the steak dinner but still feel that it was not a good idea. Items that would have been Gluten Free had been removed from the menu. Other than that the cider was good and the server did the best she could

The Old City Station Pub doesn't disappoint! Happy Hour every day?? That makes me happy! Delicious wings - they're big too. And they don't alter the product or skimp on Wednesday Wing Night. The service, smiles, special events, atmosphere and proximity to my office and home make @theoldcitystationpub (find them on Facebook) a #Nanaimo favourite for me, my friends, family and colleagues! The new management is consistent with warm welcomes and presence on the floor. The staff clearly enjoy where they work as well as their customers and each other. GOOD VIBES!!! :)

UP - Prices are very cheap, at like $8 a plate! Frys were very good too.

DOWN - Worst veggie burger I've had in a long time. Bun was so hard to crunch through, my pate looked like a pile of sand when I was done. Service was also a bit slow but maybe they were under staffed.

OUT - Everyone else at the table liked their food, but I don't think I'd go back after my meal.

Went for lunch on their half price day...super busy and slow. It was their half price menu which is usually great yet it looks like they are having to cut costs due to increased volume....smaller portion size as well! Ordered a drink that was $3 the last week. They have since stopped this deal, yet the staff neglect to tell the customer before ordering. I get my bill and my drink is $6.00 plus. I asked if there can be some kind of compromise as it was $3 the week prior and I was not informed of the change. Nothing. Manger doesn't care except about getting your cash. So with tip, drink and meal its not really a deal anymore. BETTER OUT THERE FOR YOUR MONEY.

Great pub. Love the 1/2 price dinner menu on Thursdays!

Don't trust their specials!. I went for lunch after reading the specials (which are even now still posted on the website) and ordering lunch using the website menu, only to be charged full price because they decided they wouldn't be honouring what they are advertising. I won't be going back.

Amazing food.. I eat here at least once every week. from the wings to the soup and sandwich, to the fish and chip, the Prawn and Crab Penne etc. I could go on. The food is amazing, the service is good. Great value for money.

Great pub food!. We took an out of town couple here on Saturday for lunch.Three of us ordered what has to be the best deal going...the soup and sandwich special for 8 bucks!!! Three of us had a potato/leek soup with a ham and cheese on a seeded bun...Just fantastic!!!We could not finish our sandwiches so had to take them home. One had the chicken burger and said it was great.Oh, one of the group wanted fries...for $2 he got a very large portion. This was our second time there and we cannot wait to go back!!

Less than 1/2 full on a Friday nite. That should have told me something straight away. I ordered roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. Disaster. Obviously the meat was made awhile ago and nuked. Same for the pudding. My wife ordered burger and fries which were good. Overall, don't get exotic when you come here, stick with beer and burgers, wings & fries.

Best mushroom soup by far. Came in today and we had the best soup we have ever had. Chef came out to chat to us and give us the recipe. To our surprise it consisted of lemon pepper and pesto, totally awesome soup.

Big whole chunks of shrooms in it, a meal in itself forsure.

Very good for a pub. 4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 March 2013

I don't usually go to pubs or sports bars, but I went here with a group of other parents. There were close to twenty of us and we ended up with a great long table with views of the big tvs so everyone (except me because I hate hockey) could watch the hockey game. I liked the décor, I liked the big space of the place, and we had outstanding service from our server. The food was typical pub food, burgers, wings, etc but they also have pretty outstanding prime rib dinners with twice baked mashed potatoes, gravy, Yorkshire pudding - the full deal, and at a very reasonable cost. I had a veggie burger which was good, one of the parents ordered the salt and pepper wings & special ordered without the flour coating, most had the prime rib meals. Everyone enjoyed their meals, everyone was impressed with the service (must have a very efficient kitchen staff, too), and everyone was happy they got to watch the hockey game in a fun setting. I'm not easily impressed with pub style restaurants (went to too many during my salad student days I guess) but I really enjoyed my evening at The Old City Station Pub and would go back if looking for a sports bar. We didn't stay late, we were out of there as soon as the hockey finished, but think the place fills up later with younger people so probably a decent bar scene. For the price, food, ambiance, and service I have to give this place a "very good".

Review from Wet_Coast1 March 2013

-----11 Sep, 2013-----

Great Bar. Great sports Bar with great bar food. Owners are very community orientated and sponser a lot of beer & burger nights

Andrew M review July 29 2013

-----11 Sep, 2013-----

Food was outstanding. Best pub food I've ever ate! Actually not even sure you could class it as pub food. We had the deep fried macoroni appy and I can't wait til I can go back and have it again...amazing...The food portions are generous and everything we had was delicious.. The atmosphere is open, clean and comfortable and the staff were very attentive. Good beer, good food, good service and reasonable prices...doesn't get any better than this...:)

Review from wayward0

Great service by the staff. Impressed by the pub decor. Ordered a pitcher of beer, half nachos and the 20 wings. The food tasted great and beer was pretty good for draft. Overall we had an experience above average. Good prices.

Cool Spot. I've been to Nanaimo a couple times on business the last year or so and was there last week the food is really good I had a ceasar salad and the pasta special they were both excellent , the beer there was really cold too which is nice I have been to a couple other places there and this place has been the best . 5 thumbs up!

Was there for a beer and burger night, had a veggie burger and it was worse than cardboard. I'm not sure if this is on their regular menu but I won't be back to find out

Great food, cheap prices. I had the baja wrap with fries and a beer; my mum had a steak with fries, huge slab of grilled bread bread, caesar salad, and fries, and two beers. The bill came to $38!! I will definitely be back. The baja wrap was great! Service and atmosphere was good too

Great burger!. I had the city station classic burger and it was amazing. So freaking good! The yam fries weren't great but I tried my boyfriends potato fries and they were tasty. Burger was amazing!

Great Building but the Food????. This will be a short and sweet review as I have only tried this Pub 1X so you usually have to give a place a couple tries to get a good idea as to what is what...........

I live here in Nanaimo and I was looking for a new place to try - not only for the drinks but for their food so I came across The Old City Pub and figured why not...now living here in Nanaimo you can appreciate the fact that not only Pubs compete for your hard earned money but so do Restaurants which is great, but maybe sometimes the offers or prices are TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE.

I rolled in here on a late Friday afternoon after a long day in the sun......The Prime Rib was the special today - you could either order a 6oz or 10oz cut which included a baked potato, veggies, au jus, and yorkshire pudding for 7.97 or 10.97 - what a great value for your buck!!!! Seeing as though I was hungry i opted for the 10oz cut - medium rare - well after waiting for my food it came to my table - everything looked awesome!!!! But that greatness soon faded away - the Prime Rib itself was tough, and no where near 10oz as offered (i have eaten Prime Rib many times and know how much meat 10oz or any other amount should be it was more like an 8oz cut) also the Yorkshire Pudding was terrible!!!! It was way over baked and like chewing on a old boot. Now the veggies were very good and the potato fine as well. Service was very good and the beer cold!!!

In closing....in my opinion if a offer seems TOO good to be true it usually is - and this includes food....... hey i cannot knock the price but the end result was a big disappointment. I think The Old City Pub would be better off charging 4 or 5 bucks more and improve the end product......just my thoughts........will i be back - yes to try again on another day and another item(s).

Rob Roy.
