Review Nanaimo Bakery & Cafe - Nanaimo

Took my Mum here for a belated mothers day treat. Was planning on just having coffee and snacks but ended up getting breakfast and it was fantastic! $35 dollars for 3 full plate breakfasts plus coffee, tea, and a glass of the house made Strawberry Long Island Iced Tea. You can't beat that price! The new owners and staff are amazing and this is definitely a new go-to spot for myself and my family! Pic is of the breakfast- eggs, rosemary potatoes, bacon and fresh french bread toast!! Also love the open space! It's very accessible which is awesome since quite a few of my friends and family have mobility issues and the assortment of locally made gifts and crafts for sale was cool too. Great to see small/local businesses supporting each other and our community!

I'm really trying to embrace the changes made to this bakery, but my last two visits have been very disappointing. The cinnamon buns, at $4 apiece (which I would be happy to pay for a good treat) are weird. They are overly salty and pale. No discernible taste of cinnamon. I would say they were inedible, but as a sugar addict I managed to choke mine down. My daughter rejected hers. The florescent yellow lemon poppy seed muffins...again, just weird. Not sweet enough, rubbery texture. Was excited to see the familiar crusty rolls, but they need to be renamed chewy rolls. Nothing crusty about them. Are there red seal bakers on staff, or are staff still learning how to bake? Though I appreciate the philosophy behind this business, I'm not sure I can support it unless quality improves dramatically.

What a nice discovery on the way from the ferry to Tofino. We got really hungry on our way and since it’s morning everything is close but Nanaimo Bakery. We got delicious carrot cream and some pastries. Very cute, granny place. I love it! Super nice service too. This place is very clean and well organized. Washrooms are perfectly clean.

Extremely tasty food (the best Nanaimo bars I've tried so far and as they're a family favourite I've tried them at almost every place we've gone to!) The new atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable. A great place to sit and relax while enjoying tasty food. The price point is also excellent! 100% recommend (so far we've tried their incredible cinnamon buns, Nanaimo bars and quiche! Can't wait to try more)

Beautiful renovations and updated features! Loved my salad, and enjoyed a delicious cinnamon bun… because I had a healthy salad 😉and a wonderful cup of coffee! Staff were so friendly, kind and inviting. I will definitely be going back!

One of the best Nanaimo Bars I have ever had! The ‘everything bagel’ loaf of bread was delicious as well. Prices were decent and the quality was great! Will definitely come back when in town again!

Authentic Berliner doughnuts, select excellent German bread and buns, and good selection of desserts. Could offer higher quality tea, and coffee was good. Great place to take your Grandma for a date!

I’m 26 and have been going to this bakery since I was 6. Something about the old timesy feel, the grand selection of baked goods and confections, and the overall atmosphere was comforting. This place held a special place in my hear for the majority of my life. That being said.. Coming in today, I was appalled by the dramatic change and modernization of the place. It felt like a chunk of my childhood was ripped away from me and I was met with just another “modern” bakery. I sympathize to all the older clientele as I know this was a town favourite for many, but with the new design, menu, and atmosphere, I was extremely disappointed. Prices have skyrocketed, all my menu favourites have been disposed of, all the staff I’ve grown to love over the years are gone, and everything I loved about this quaint little bakery have all but vanished. I understand the strive for change, growth and progress, but this was the wrong place to instate such a change. To everyone who shares my view on this, I’m sorry we had to lose such a gem. My heart goes out to all the old clientele who still dream of the good ol’ days. Sorry to say, but after 20 years of loyalty to the Nanaimo Bakery, I will never come back again.

Visiting from out of town and came in to pick out a birthday cake. Lovely older European ladies behind the counter who clearly know what they're doing in the kitchen. Beautiful selection of delicious cakes and treats in addition to some European grocery/specialty items. Also extremely well priced- only 15$ for a cake!!! Wish I had somewhere like this at home!

A wonderful bakery with high standards and affordable prices. We love stopping in at this bakery when we visit Nanaimo. The owners run an excellent business, where good freshly baked products, good service, and very reasonable prices are the rule of the day. Cleanliness, hard work, and high standards of consistent value always prevail, and the large open room gives a feeling of comfort and relaxation. We particularly like the pasties, pies, salads, and fruit tarts.

Regular client. I have been a customer for many, many years, and always take out of town guests, who are never disappointed.......when I visit Edmonton, I always take a goodie package.

Over the years, I may have been disappointed a couple of times......but not anywhere near the times in a Grocery Store Bakery Dept.

I was in the Bakery business for over 40 years, so have some experience in this area.

Cheap. My friend and I are regular customers of the Nanaimo Bakery, usually we have lunch there once a week, the food is mediocre, but we enjoy the pastries, today I purchased a couple of day old bags of scones and asked for a bag to store it since we hadn't eat yet, the woman refused saying that they only give bags to expensive items, my friend and I walked out without having lunch and most likely wont be back, because of a 2 cents bag they lost 2 long time customers, go figure.

Stopped here for a light snack. Feasted on some delicious mousse like ham and cheese quiche, with a flaky crust. Also sampled some in house chocolates. They are no Papa Chocolat, but definitely satisfy this chocolate snob's craving.

Don't Bother. We were directed to this bakery by another place, as we were looking to pick up a cake for a quick birthday. We ended up buying a cake and some assorted tarts from them, and we're exceptionally disappointed. The cake was largely whip cream and strawberries, but tasted awful, and the tarts were stiff and stale tasting. We were really disappointed by everything and will never, EVER, go back. If you need anything, go somewhere else.

I stopped for breakfast, which was bland but affordable, but when I asked if I could plug in to charge my phone I was told they had no free outlets even though several were clearly visible!!! When asked again I was told they don't do that then she asked " why do you need this"?! I was flabbergasted to say the least, lying then being rude to a customer. I left and will not be going back. It was like something out of a movie.

I love coming home and visiting this bakery! Even better- it's close to home. With each visit I am never let down! Couldn't list all my favorites, I've been going there since it first opened--the kind of neighbourhood bakery only seen in movies :)

Excellent rye bread & croissants at very good prices!!

Dissappointing. Everything looked great but the icing on everything was made with shortening (or at least tasted like it) Bought a grand marnier cake ( my usual favourite) and the cake was very dry. Also bought a few other treats, dry and tasteless. Waste of money.

Looks great!. Had a hankering for some croissants last Saturday and stopped by Nanaimo Bakery for my first time (ever!) and was pleasantly surprised!

There was everything from napoleons to marzipan fruits to European breads to tarts! What a great selection... I had a hard time sticking to two croissants. Definitely will be back :)

Nanaimo Baker & Confectionary. Just amazing to find such a place in a city of this size. The pastry: "Torten" German style, cakes, danish pastry, cookies, etc. are simply excellent and much cheaper than any place else and they offer a good selection. They also make their own chocolates, truffles or soups which I have not tried. The seating is quite comfortable and stylish. Neither Vancouver nor Seattle have anything comparable to offer. You can also buy home-made bread. Enjoy your lunch repast, but revel in your afternoon coffee and cake.
