Review Fung Shing - Montreal

Post-covid I hate to dog a small business but…It cost sixty five dollars to get the worst Chinese food I’ve ever had. A pork dish that was dry, tough and chewy, a hot and sour soup that tasted sour in all the wrong ways, a Cantonese chow mein with mushrooms that were both slimy and mushy at once, BUT the peanut butter dumplings were amazing. If we had just had those we would have been satisfied.

Decent Chinese food. The waiters are very friendly and helpful. The boss is super nice!! We ordered orange beef, but he told me beef was not fresh and the new shipment haven't come in yet so we changed it to orange chicken.

This place takes you back in time to 70’s with the wood panelling and double swinging doors into the kitchen. The portions were generous and the prices very reasonable. The flavours were much like home cooking, light on the salt and spices. Good thing too, because that way you can eat more and have a better chance of finishing things off. The mixed seafood hot pot was great and so was the prawns fried rice.

Been going there for probably 30 years, still as good. Favorite Chinese restaurant in MTL. The place is really not fancy but the food is delicious and reasonable price. Great if you are a small group so you can buy many plates and share

Practically the only Chinese Restaurant I liked to eat at when I'm in Chinatown. Friendly staff, good food and prices are fair for what you get. I've been living for 35years, and my family has been going there for more than 40 years. Best Wonton Noodle Soup! Hands down.

Authentic chinese food in Montreal. Being away from home for 2 weeks, I was missing Chinese food. So glad to find a place that cooks it like it should be rather than modified chinese food. Two of us had a whole lobster and a plate of chinese broccoli (Kailan) fried with garlic with a bowl of rice each all downed with a pot of chinese tea. Portions were generous to that's all we could manage. Food was delicious. We were stuffed at the end. Yearning of chinese food was satisfied. Price was reasonable - a total of $48 before the tip. Service was friendly. Staff were polite. The place isn't posh but for Asians, it's the taste of the food that counts. Highly recommended for authentic Cantonese food!

Great food. Highly recommend the duck and the noodles. Ask for crispy noodles. Everything was good.

Really great service and delicious food. The wonton soup was especially good. Can't wait to go back.

Amazing wonton!! Not having lived in Montreal for so long, it's nice to have a good wholesome Chinese meal. The chicken cashew was great. However the fried duck was way too dry and tasted a little funny. I'd go back any day to have more wonton soup and try out other dishes!

Authentic. I've been here before but it's always a go to place plus it authentic which makes it even better! This place is a must try for everyone and anything on the menu is good. Price points are somewhat decent, it's totally worth it though.
These we're all separate dishes; we started off with wonton soup, crisp rolls and pan fried dumplings - which were awesome! Then we had sweet and sour pork, lemon chicken and finished off with yeow cheng rice (I don't think I spelled that right) which were all very good but it came out to be a bit pricey because we ordered the dishes separately, had we ordered a combo style meal it would have been cheaper but overall such a good meal.

Excellent General-Tao. Food here is generally great, but the General-Tao is even better. Fast service and very affordable.

Stopped by on my way home and stopped as rating were good.

Unfortunately , the decor , the food and the staff is simply sad.
Even the wonton tasted old
I'd stay away

Do Not Eat Here. We walked to China town very excited to have a tasty Chinese meal. Since urban spoon gave this restaurant a 92% positive rating, my two friends and I were positive we would have a delicious dinner. Unfortunately, we were so wrong. The amount of butter Fung Shing puts on its food should be criminal. Half way through my plate, the butter had congealed around the noodles, and looked like bacon grease that had been sitting around for months - but a dark yellow. Unfortunately, the monstrous amount of butter ruined the entire experience, and left my twenty-year-old stomach feeling like a senior citizen applying to be on "The Biggest Loser". Further, the service was decent at best, as the staff were informative yet impersonal. Overall, in light of a tasty won ton soup, this restaurant rates 10 out of 10 on the heart attack scale and 0 out of ten on the satisfaction scale.

Change of guards / Still no MSG. I have been visiting this restaurant for almost... 25-30 years. I could not remember any changes all this time. Except, on my last visit I have noticed the owner, the cashers, the whole personal except one person ( that I am going to call the merchandise clerk) have changed.
Same table, same chairs, same decorations. A new menu with same items as before except perharps with a 10% price increase. No problem.
I found there was a lot of attention in piling things on the plate. the BBQ meat, BBQ pork and BBQ duck is not as much BBQ as it could. BBQ meat offers sort of a middle ground between full BBQ and the taste of regular meat.
I had 1/2 Cantonese Chow Mein at around $6 and 1/4 BBQ duck at around $7.
What is special about this place is their frugal way of using MSG. They use very little or no MSG at all, same as their old policy.

Great prices, and tasty too. Just to give you an idea of my general bias towards food, I am Thai, therefore I prefer flavorful, spicy food. I am neither a gastronomy snob nor a fast-food devotee, though I will sometimes indulge in the "Canadian-Chinese" fare because it amuses me.

First off, Fung Shing is tasty. Very tasty. And it's very affordable. Healthy, it is not. The dishes often have the fatiness of a few dim sum carts, so if you're looking for the lean Asian diet, go Japanese instead. But if your tastebuds crave some serious umami, go to Fung Shing.

The food is usually quite fresh, though the roasted duck is a hit and miss. I am no fan of generic chow mein, but their Cantonese fried noodles changed my mind. Their peking soup is a must-have during Montreal winters and so far, I have been very satisfied with all their seafood dishes.

The one thing you may dislike is the level of service. The waiters are quick and efficient, but not that congenial. However, they will accommodate your special requests easily. The decor is absolutely horrible and they still don't have Interac.

But that won't stop me from going back. Again and again and again.

Fung Shing is that place deep in the heart of Chinatown where you can get Chinese food for relatively cheap. The quality of the food will probably satisfy most of you and in the end, it’s all that matters.
