Review Comptoir 21 - Montreal

Benjamin TALLIER
We were looking for a restaurant in Mile End, plenty of choices there. But then we have seen this chippy and we were craving for some. We had 1 fish and chips and also 1 poutine with sausage. I totally recommend the fish and chips the sauces are incredible.

It’s not fancy cuisine neither it’s known for its decor It’s really About the fishn’ chips and seafood that this place has to offer ! Menu is small but there’s choices for Vegetarians. I’ve had the Grilled Fish Burger 🍔 with a salad 🥗 and Fries 🍟. Best fish burger I’ve had in a while. Good portions. No need to reserve, Relaxed atmosphere not overcrowded. there’s no tables only seats around counters. Waitress was polite and helpful. Definitely will comeback !!

Excellent fish and chips. I love their Paprika sauce and their side salad is good too. Would love to dine again if I'm in that area. Staffs are friendly.

Cozy environment, friendly staff and fresh fish with assorted sauces. If you are not crazy about fried fish, definitely try the comptoir 21 salad that comes with sautéed cod fish. The clam cream soup was amazing.

I come here from time to time on work break, I'm a big fan of fish and chips. The atmosphere is nice, even though the place is compact it doesn't feel that way. Although the fish choice is limited, the quality of the the food is delicious with a variety choice of sauces to go with it and you can replace your fries for a delicious poutine. Highly recommend giving this place a try.

Been to the one on Wellington street in verdun, first time I eaten in the mile end district. Great fish, fried to perfection and not super greesy. Fries are super crispy and ambiance is great.

Loved the place, very nice server and the food quality was good. Very crispy and not greasy, the way I like my fish and chips!

Love this place, one of the best Fish 'n' Chips restaurants in Montreal, they have different types of dressings and fish, besides they offer a delicious clam chowder that goes great specially when it's cold, also different types of local beer, Boreal IPA which is quite decent, portions are generous and good service.

Best clam chowder in town. The fish and chip is massive, so i recommend the half portion. The poutine is really good too.
Seating is limited so dont come with a big group.

After several different friend highly recommending Comptoir 21 ( @Comptoir21Fish ), we just had to drop by and it end up being the first stop of our 3 day Montreal trip. The menu is pretty simple with mainly Fish & Chips (duh) selection and includes other things like hotdog and burger for the non-fish eater. Love the U-shaped bar table where the waitress can bring everything from kitchen to table. The space was rather small and you may need to wait a bit for a seat but the turnaround is pretty quick. Homemade Clam Chowder $5.95 We started with their New England style chowder and it was rich, creamy and super thick. You can choose form Fish only, Fish&Chips, Fish&Poutine and Fish&Salad and comes in half size, small size and full size. Large Fish & Poutine $15.95 This was the full size version which comes with 3 big piece of fish. It was light and fluffy in a crispy battered perfection plus love how the fish was piping hot when you cut into it. It also came with a choice of sauces and we choose the original tartar sauce and that was the only thing I didn't like about the whole dish. The tartar sauce was a tad bland with not enough "sour/tart" in it and wish they was bigger bits of pickles in it. The poutine was surprisingly good with the traditional thick gravy and cheese curds. Large Fish & Salad $15.95 Side of salad is a much healthier option and a welcoming refreshing to the deep fried fish.

4/5 for Comptoir21. I'm a big huge fan of fish 'n chips and I had a really excellent place to get them in Edmonton, Brits Fish & Chips. So when I started hearing really good things about Mile End restaurant Comptoir21, SUCH AS: One of Canada's 50 Places of a Lifetime in National Geographic magazine, voted #1 Best Fish & Chips 2014 in Cult MTL's annual pole, and it was also named in Cult MTL's Student Survival Guide 2014-2015, calling it one of the best Pub/British Grub places in town... I was interested! It also helps that the place is literally around the corner from my house - sign me up!

I seem to be on a roll with restaurants who's address corresponds with their name, however in this case I'm fairly certain that '21' refers to the number of seats around their shiny wooden counter. The space is small and is part vintage, part nautical diner and they have a lovely blue storefront. The only seating is around the long, U-shaped counter, and since the food comes up fast it's the type of place where you jump in and jump out fairly quickly. Our friendly server readily answered our questions and while the menu lists many yummy-sounding things, from appetizers (the Salade Comptoir21 sounds delicious and I would like to try their homemade clam chowder) and even items like burgers, we were clearly there for only one thing. They offer several different combinations, sizes, and side items along with your fish and chips and I went with the "Fish" Petite Portion (Served with lemon, coleslaw and choice of homemade sauce - $7.95) and Frites Maison ($2.60). You can get the fish with fries on the side (obviously) but I was going to be sharing the fries with someone else, so we opted for the (presumably larger) appetizer version. The "petite" portion comes with two pieces of fish, versus the three pieces in the "grande." I really like that they make all of their sauces in-house and that there is more selection than just the usual tartar. There was also jalapeno, paprika, curry, herb, and Thai. I went with the tartar though, just to stick with the classics on my inaugural visit.
Served in a basket as it should be, the only thing missing was the newsprint. The pieces of fish were about half the length that I'm used to, but I doused them in as much lemon as possible and dug in! The batter wasn't as super-smooth and greasy as I normally like, and I think it might have been a tad over fried because it had a bit of a bitter burnt flavour to it. However the fish on the inside was superb! The white fish was incredibly moist and tender, encased in it's batter shield. It melted in my mouth. I'm kinda of on the fence about their tartar sauce. It certainly wasn't the best that I've had and I'm used to tartar having bits of pickle in it. This one seemed to have dill in it instead... Which yeah, I get the idea... But I don't think that it was a viable substitute. The fact that they have so many other tasty-sounding sauces makes me excited to try something different next time. The coleslaw was vinegary and good. But the fries! The fries!!! Of all of the fries that I have had so far in Montreal, these are the best. Perfectly golden and cooked just right, they still had the skins on and they tasted incredible. They also serve poutine at this place, which I would definitely like to try now, knowing how good the fries are. Their malt vinegar is presented in a spray bottle, and you better believe that my entire dish received multiple spray-downs throughout the meal.

Overall, Comptoir21 was a little bit hit and miss, but the things that were right were very right. I love knowing that whenever a fish 'n chips craving strikes, I have a little place only a stone's throw away to help satiate me.

Fried and over done. I ate there twice. Greasy and oily and over fried.
with Fried stuff you can never know what you're eating beside crunchy fried batter and that is all I tasted...
there's not much to expect when you drink and eat this kind of food especially in the village. If you like fried stuff, it's your place !
The service is friendly sometimes too friendly that I don't want to talk to the waitress ! tried it twice, it's more than enough !

Awesome fish and chips. Had the homemade clam chowder and small fish and chips with tartare sauce. Both portions are reasonable. Fish was well-cooked-crispy on the outside, springy on the inside. Together with the tartare sauce, it just melts in your mouth.

Service was fast and friendly.

Horrible chowder!

Great fish and chips greasy spoon.
Putting vinegar in spray bottles is brilliant. MB rating 7 maybe even 8.

Unexpectedly good experience. Saw this place from the outside and thought the atmosphere looked cool. Although I'm not a fan of fish, I ordered the burger and fries. Extremely good prices, and a really wonderful burger - I ordered mine with cheese and fried onions. I'll be thinking about this burger for a long time. Good service, great atmosphere.

Good fish and chips. Great fish burger (but it's messy), good fries, nice little place. Oh, and desert of the day at 2.50$. I like it.

The cod croquettes and the regular fish n' chips is definitely worth it, too.

Good not great. Eat well for cheap. 5$ burgers. 7$ calamari (I like the thaï sauce).

Fish and chips = ok not wow.

Best fish & chips in town. Perfectly cooked cod in light crisp batter. Way better than Brit & Chips in old Montreal. We've been missing out this amazing little cute place!

Always Solid. Love this place. Simple, fresh, friendly, and they seem to be always open. Great Mile-end go-to!

In East End not East Coast. Outstanding Fish and Chips Best since I left PEI. Fun place with friendly service.Great value. Puts others to shame!

Small, eat at the lovely wooden counter, fantastic fish n chips with amazing chowder pop-in place. Not much seating.

Good food but bring enough cash as they do not take credit cards!

A good quick fix for the munchies. Been there 3 times in the last year.
I always get the fish & chips while the wife gets anything else.
The batter is crunchy, not too oily, and the fish has texture. Wife liked all her dishes.
Many seasoning options for the fish, many kind of mayo and the classic malt vinegar.
Nice diner feel.

You can't beat a home fish.... You can't beat a homemade fish burger and the fries are among some of the best i've had.

Its batter is delicate and crisp to perfection. Its fish, flaky, is tender and juicy. Its chips, greasy-oh-so-greasy, require a month of exercise to recover. And all of this comes in GIGANTIC servings. Sorry Brit, there is no coming back. It’s been fun. Possibly the best fish and chips in town can be found at this home-y and old-school-hip vibe diner. Seated on high stools in front of a wall decorated with black and white photos, I was pleasantly amused to see their proclamation as ”Les meilleur hipster spot à Montréal“. Anything that freely associates with hipsters must be unconventionally promising – no mainstream stuff here! And seriously, they’re right. Their fish and chips is outstanding; now every time I walk past I have to stop and pay a silent salute to the shop front.

At Comptoir 21, there are no options regarding the fish or the batter used. You’ve got one choice and it is a damn good one. The fish is nice and flaky while retaining its moistness despite the frying. The batter is thin but very crisp and sticks nicely to the fish. The options you do have is regarding whether you want fries, poutine or salad as well as your choice of sauce. I kept
Montreal Food Divas
The Divas are all about fabulous, lengthy, boozy dinners. But sometimes you just want to get a quick bite to eat; of course, it still has to meet our ever so high Diva standards. When we think of quick eats we usually mean fun lunch spots, and in Montreal that usually translates to burgers, pizzas and sandwiches. Comptoir 21 offers fish & chips, a much more fun bite to eat that in Montreal isn’t the usual choice amongst the locals.

The Comptoir 21 on St. Viateur has been around for about 3 years and is THE answer to a night of drinkerie at the Waverly , for example, when you find yourself in desperate need of battered haddock and heavenly chips with fresh tartar sauce and a spritz of malt vinegar on a freezing January night so as to soak up the cocktails you’ve had two too many of. Again, “for example.” As of three months ago, fresh fish, clam chowder, calamari,

I’ve tried a few fish and chip places around Montreal, but this was my first time at Comptoir 21 Diner. Located on St. Viateur West and St.Laurent, it’s named such because there are no tables, only counters. Guests are seated on white stools along a hairpin counter and the friendly waitress travels up and down the middle, serving food in the typical fish and chip baskets. The varnished wood counter tops and the pictures hung on the walls really give the place a seaside feel. The menu had the option of a small or large portion of fish and also offered other dishes like beef, veggie or fish burgers, tempura shrimp, steak sandwich, poutine and clam chowder. There’s something for everyone at Comptoir 21, which was evident with the diverse crowd of people in the restaurant. Food : My boyfriend and I were hungry, so we started with a shared entrée of calam
Mr. Lew's Great Burger Search
I came to Comptoir 21 looking for a fish burger and found a nice, quaint little restaurant that does things simple. The service keeps things nice, as you’ll feel like you’re in good hands.
