Review La Capital Tacos - Montreal

Brenda Wieneke
This is my third time visiting this restaurant and let just say I can’t get enough of it! This is one of my favorite tacos spot in the city. If you’re visiting and looking for something casual with great service and food, this is the place for you! Follow my foodie page on Instagram @wink_foodie

The guacamole was fresh and was very delicious. The Birria tacos on the other head were good but I would’ve liked a bit more flavour. The place itself is very nice with open windows in the summer, our waiters were very busy but still managed to offer good service.

Personally the birria tacos are my favourite along with the frijoles (beans) and chips. The birria is 3 corn tacos and come with a side of birria (think delicious soup). The birria is legit good and is better than most places in Oaxaca (where Birria’s from) I believe all their tacos are made with corn tortillas so most are gluten free. They have a lovely patio for warm summer nights.

Food was amazing. Rosarito tacos were excellent (the sauce & the way shrimps are cooked is cooked). Pastor tacos were good but a little dry (only had 1 small pineapple for the whole thing). Mango slush margarita was really good too. Went on a wednesday night and waited around 20 min for a table of 3. Food service was super fast.

Delicious tacos in Chinatown! We had Birria, shrimp and rib eye tacos. Hot sauces are amazing, too! Paloma drink was delicious. Appetizers - we had the black bean dip and guacamole, did not disappoint. A must if you're in the mood for tacos! Service was good 👍🏼

I’ve loved this place since the first time I tried. I’ve now had dinner to this restaurant for the third time, and I haven’t been disappointed once: staff is great, food is finger-licking good, drinks are tasty, and the food is quite affordable. Don’t get thrown off by it’s location (who would expect to find a taco place in chinatown?), this restaurant is a serious contestant for the title of best taco restaurant in the city, and might actually be the best. You NEED to try it out. I strongly suggest the carnitas, barbacoa, and rosarito tacos, as well as the quesabirria quesadilla, all of which are DELICIOUS. Their guacamole is also amongst the best ones i had in Montreal (even if the portion is a bit small).

The tacos were okay. I had the birria and they were a bit dry. Our waitress also had an attitude that day, not to mention it was super busy and raining and there was no dry place to wait in line… you get the picture. Margaritas were pretty good. Guac was yummy. Not enough chips tho, had to ask for more.

This place is located right at the beginning of China Town. I had heard great things about this place and when i found myself in the area, I didn't miss the chance to go. But unfortunately, it was less than par. I ordered the quesadilla, while my friend ordered the rib-eye taco. We also ordered two drinks, margarita and mojito. They waitress told us they have the best margarita in town. Which is totally false, both of us did not enjoy our drinks and the food was no better. The quesadilla was shredded chicken with cheese and they used cilantro as garnish which I do not like at all. Furthermore, the taco was not crispy, the ribeye was not seasoned and the only garnish was again cilantro. Yes service was fast, and maybe if they took their time they could give out better food. Also the price for the amount of food and alcohol they give you ridiculous.

I had dinner there today, the staff was friendly and helpful. They make their own hot sauces, all of which were delicious and flavourful. They are also one of the few places in Montreal that serve Mezcal, which is a huge plus (I ordered a mezcal variant of an old-fashioned which was great.) I'll probably be back there with friends in a couple weeks, since it seems like it'll be a great spot to have a drink and order food (they had a few solid vegetarian options, which is always a plus). The only downside is that the tacos I ordered were a bit saltier than I expected, but hey, I like salt, so whatever. Definitely worth checking out!

We came upon Le Capital on TripAdvisor when looking for a quick place to have dinner in the area before a show! What a fun surprise! A Mexican restaurant in the middle of Chinatown, packed with people and great food! Every dish was was terrific! I highly recommend it for casual dining dinner!

Excellent Tacos place with traditional Mexican food. The cocktails are also very good (I highly recommend the Habanero Margarita!! ). I had a great time there. Thanks to all the staff

After going here many times and even recommending the place to others I was disappointed tonight with the lack of service and respect. The server gave us a dirty look after we had waited 20 mins to order our drinks. This is after she told us that she would come right back for the order. Once we got her attention she seemed annyoed that we wanted to order something else. When we waited even longer for our drinks and food we asked another server why a bowl of gaucamole is taking 35 mins to arrive, his answer was "there was a mix up". This is after 2 other tables arrived and got their full orders before we received anything. Will never go here again.

Best tacos in the city (I lived in Mex for seven years). Their specialties are the Carnitas and Al Pastor. Cocktails are great and so is the staff. I highly recommend it. I eat there at least once a week.

Great little mexican place at the middle of china town. Fantastic food! Highly recommend it!

Nous avons fait affaire avec la Capital lors de notre mariage. Ils sont sont occupés de tout ; le bartender, le cuisinier sur place, les chips et guacamole avant la cérémonie. Vous avez été géniaux, merci!
Humberto Zamora Del Cueto
The service is lousy and the food, extremely conventional, does not mert the prices. If you never try this place, you will not have missed anything.
Robert Low
Love the food here. The guacamole is to die for. Everything on the menu is good and well priced! Staff is very friendly. Must see!

I love Montreal for its diversity in cuisine. Saying that if you’re looking for Tacos, as Mexican, I feel this is as authentic as possible! Missing more variety in salsas 🌶 (for a Mexican, as foreign you will be ok with the 2 options). They have enough variety of tacos and dishes. Avoid going on weekends unless you’re willing to wait half an hour in the line (if you really want tacos, then it is worth it to wait). I saw a mariachi once in a Friday night I don’t know if it’s regular, but you will enjoy it if you see it! Don’t go if you want to pay cheap for tacos, this is a Mexican restaurant in a foreign country, you will pay more than regular, specially if you want to try different dishes.

A tour of Mexico between all the dishes and sauces. Great guacamole & excellent margaritas. Amazing offering of tequila and mezcal

Amazing food! Amazing service! So worth it! Can't wait to go back!! If you're looking for real homecooked mexican food, you have to try this!!

I was in town during May long weekend, and a was suggested by a few locals and google to check this place out. We were a group of 7, tried calling multiple times to see if reservations were required, but no answer. Figured it was busy, so we still made our way there. Upon arrival there was a line up out the door. The host with the dyed yellow hair (sorry didn’t catch her name) was super accommodating, and apologized for not answering the phone. She set us up at the bar until a spot opened up. The food was authentic and delicious. Great little spot!

Nestled in between the Chinese grocery stores and the Chinese restaurants one would expect to find in Chinatown, you have La Capital Tacos. It was packed on a Saturday night but we were able to get seats without too much of a wait. I loved that they paid homage to their neighbourhood with a lucky cat, only, dressed in a luchador mask.

Worst service I've ever received at a restaurant!

I was excited to try this restaurant after hearing good reviews from friends. While the tacos, guacamole, potatoes were delicious, the service was absolutely horrible. The restaurant wasn’t even that busy and 4 waiters were working. After waiting to be seated, my friend and I were placed at a dirty table. The waitress then came over to scrub the table without once making eye contact or engaging in conversation. We were given menus and water but that was the last we saw of her. Others came in after us and got their orders taken promptly. We saw her clearing, bringing out food and bills to other tables, so her job was not only to seat us. After 15 minutes I had to flag down the waiter with the French accent to take our order and he seemed like I was an inconvenience. The food was the only good thing here. It reminded us of the ones we had had in Mexico. After finishing our meal, we asked the waiter for the bill. He cleared our table and said that he’d be back. He never did. Other tables next to us that had come in after us were leaving before us. We had our coats on and waited another 15 minutes, at which point we got up to pay at the bar. Guess who was there? The waitress that hadn’t served us during our entire meal. The food does not make up for the appalling service and the feeling of clearly being ignored. We will not be recommending this place to anyone coming to Montreal.

Left us waiting without so much as a menu or acknowledgement for over 10 minutes. Ended up just walking out. It was a disappointing experience!
Mmmm! De retour très bientôt!
Eating Out Montreal
My homie Sasher was in town from his gallivanting (yes, I'm calling it that) in central and south America so I needed to see him. OK, he's actually working :) I was already eating with my other homie, Isa, so we decided that we should eat tacos. I'm always in for tacos. Always. I had passed by La Capital many times, wondering wtf a Mexican resto was doing in Chinatown. Well, that's the magic of it, really. Who would've thought they'd put Mexico in China? NO ONE. One of the trick to having a popular resto is putting it somewhere where it has absolutely no competition whatsoever. Hence, Mexico in China. Brilliant!
Excellent atmosphere, great service great price even better food. Would definitely come back on our next trip to Montreal. Daily specials are fantastic!

Good place to meet for tacos and cerveza, it was quite busy but we shared a table with other people. Tacos were good and the ambiance is also pretty cool. If you like cheese the chicharron de queso is a must try.

Great little place, you don't go for the looks, but for the food! Simple menu, 4 choices of appetizer, 4kinds of taco, and 3 of quesadilla. Maybe 3 or 4 choices of beers and 4-5 kind of flavored sodas. Food is good, service is great and fast. Would go again.

La Capital Tacos is a hidden Mexican gem in the heart of Chinatown. Don't know why they chose the location, but the owner definitely has some sort of Chinese heritage as you can see Chinese cultural symbols everywhere in the restaurant including Chinese version of the menu, Chinese style dinner ware and even a Chinese buddha of fortune sitting on a table beside the bar.

The restaurant is small and compact, demonstrating a minimalist and no nonsense design concept. There is one giant table on one side and a few smaller tables and plenty of bar seats to accommodate groups of various sizes. The interior of the restaurant reflects a multicultural theme. One side of the wall is of Japanese style wooden panel, another side of wall is of naked bricks. There are various Mexican and Chinese art deco on the walls. The table settings are of western style, simple, clean accompanied with modern comfortable soft chairs.

Rumor has it that they serve some of the most authentic tacos in town, I'm not sure of that nor do I care about that. What I'm sure is after my visit to this restaurant, I can say I had some of the best Tacos I've ever had and probably one of the best in Montreal.

The menu is simple and straight forward. Only the most typical and quintessential Mexican food are available which makes it much an easy job to place order. There are five appetizers and eight tacos dishes all together, five of which are with corn tortillas and three with flour tortillas. With a little help from the waitress, I ordered their basic and signature dishes with Guacamole as the appetizer and two tacos dishes: Pastor and Rosarito.

The Guacamole paste was yummy and fresh, the onion and tomato garnish on top added a bit of flavor to it. The Doritos chips that comes with it seem to be home made, was very crunchy and chewy, definitely more tasteful than those bought from supermarket. But I came to visit them for their tacos, it wouldn't matter much if the tacos aren't good.

Fortunately, I'm even more impressed with the tacos. When it comes to tacos, its two main ingredient the shell and its fillings/toppings are equally important. So I'll judge their tacos from these two aspects. Personally I prefer soft-shell tacos over hardshell, so I'm really glad their tacos are served on soft corn tortillas. The tortillas are soft yet firm and chewy, a million miles better than those you found from Taco Bell.

The Pastor taco is probably their specialty, the toppings are made of marinated pork cooked in a Spit roast, the same way the Lebanese shish and shawarma are cooked which I really enjoy. The roasted pork was tasteful and a bit crispy as well, when wrapped in a soft tortilla, one bite will give you two contrasting tastes, crispiness and softness. The pastor taco also comes with an avocado source, was garnished with onion, coriander and pineapple which gave it a tropical touch and added flavors of spiciness, sweetness and sour.

The Rosarito taco is whole different beast, a giant deep fried beer battered shrimp was served on each tortillas garnished with red cabbage, mayo and avocado source. What's amazing about it is its multilayers of tastes. You got the soft tortilla wrap, the crispy batter shell outside ,then the aromatic sweet creamy beer batter in the middle, and the juicy fresh tasty shrimp meat inside, again a genius creation. For those who always like extra sources, they also have red(spicy) and green salsa sources on the table.

In addition to the amazing tacos, their service is swift and good too. The waitress was helpful, warm, polite and attentive. At the end of my meal, I felt completely full and satisfied, and was already thinking of returning to try some of their other tacos.

Everyone kept raving about La Capital Tacos, an authentic taco shop in Chinatown (of all places in Montreal). A few friends of ours who had been to Mexico had told us that this was the closest thing to an authentic Mexican taqueria in Montreal. Well we haven’t been to Mexico, but we love the sound of authentic Mexican cuisine.
Caroline Noel
nice atmosphere but very loud & crowded place , drinks are really overpriced !! & food is more or less ; not the most authentic Mexican, good service but would probably not go back

Really enjoyed this authentic Mexican tacos joint in a weird location in the middle of Chinatown. Had the porc tacos and the shrimp tacos as well as the fried bananas desert. All excellent MB rating 8.5.

Our first encounter at La Capital was a predominantly positive one. We enjoyed the fun, casual feel and service, and were pretty impressed with the guacamole and shrimp tacos. We did, however, find fault with the rest of the food we sampled, which places us on the fence as far as a final verdict is concerned. That being said, this new taqueria is a welcome addition to the city's "low-cost" dining scene.

Cute little restaurant. Cute chefs. Great mix between china and mexico. Tacos were good - something to eat in rather take out - great little menu. Could have been a warmer service experience.

A taco joint in chinatown... audacious! Square space with a wall of windows that are left open most summer days/evenings. Great vibe from the happy croud and also from the friendly service. Simple vintage decor with cozy chairs and long, wide wooden tables that you share with whoever goes to eat there. Simple straightforward menu. A sort of mexican pub. Fun place to meet up with friends.

First off - we think you should know that no alcohol is served at this restaurant. That being said, their tangerine juice is indeed tasty - probably would be even better with some tequila in it though....

While we get that this small family run restaurant is just starting out - by the time we arrived their at 8pm on a Saturday almost half (of an already small) menu was either sold out or not available.

The guac and home made tortilla chips along with the cheese quesadilla were a hit! We also did enjoy the steak tacos and chicken tacos. The portions were a fair size, with 3 soft shell tacos per order.

Honestly - this place would be AMAZING as a late night (2am) eatery as a lot of new bars are popping up in this area.

We look forward to La Capital settling into the neighborhood and we will most definitely be back to try out their full menu.

Delicious and inexpensive!

Few good authentic Mexican places downtown. The starters were between $2-$5 and the tacos range from $9-$13 (and you get three). Super tasty. Must try.

I think I was not alone to think that Chinatown was dying since a few years ago. It seems like the new Chinatown has moved to the proximity of Concordia. Something must be done to uplift this dying neighborhood. Who had thought that the first move was to plant a taco restaurant! Yes, that’s what La Capital Tacos did.
JC
very friendly staff, the tacos were pretty good. Love the taco el pastor!
Just like someone said "best tacos in chinatown" , but other than that, if im in china own i'd much rather grab some chinese food or pho.

it might have a hard time competing with the low prices of other restaurants in the general area.

Great time, friendly staff. Heard a lot about a taco place that opened up 2 months ago in Chinatown, so we went to check it out for dinner We were not disappointed We ordered the guacamole to start, which was authentic and delicious The daily special was the shrimp fajita quesadilla, which was absolutely delicious We also ordered the tacos carnitas which were filled with tasty pork Our server, Paulino, was very friendly and helpful The daily dessert ended the meal perfectly All in all, a great place for lunch or informal dinner Hoping that they will eventually get a liquor license, because a nice cold beer would have really been fantastic Great food and friendly staff = good recipe for success !

Great price great service and even better food. Walked by tonight looking for something to snack on and noticed this new place I had never seen before with the neon TACOS sing in the window. Decided to stop in for one plate. After having 3 of their porc special I was craving more. The server suggested the rib tacos and they where excellent. The kitchen was already half way through their close but where more than happy to make them. All in all a great experience! Will be back and highly recommend!

Not so hot!. This restaurant is not very good. Its so bizarre that no one is even offended that a TACO place would open in Chinatown!!! Dont ruin Chinatown you idiots!!!
GLOBEATER
Best Tacos in Chinatown!. Just stopped in recently and I am very impressed. The menu and interior are simple with traditional taco combinations plus some with creative twists. This is as close to a real taco restaurant as it gets in Montreal, and without all the pretentious hipster staff. Very good hot sauces...Globeater highly recommends.

Best tacos in Montreal.. Forget Rey del Tacos. These are the best tacos in Montreal, period. Love it! Staff's awesome too.
