Review Lazar Deli & Bakery - Mississauga

Hussain Meerwali
Lazar is a family owned/run bakery. the owner is one of the most helpful, generous, precise business owners I have ever met. We have been relying on them for our cake, pastry, deserts needs and they never disappoint. The taste is always the same (mouthwatering and melts in your mouth), their prices are reasonable and they’re always on time. HIGHLY recommend!

A wonderful neighbourhood bakery with all the things you could want. From fresh bread, to deli counter, with a pastry and cake area, and a hot food cafe section too. Love the food here - especially Portuguese tarts and fresh bread. The only downside is a lack of following any pandemic safety protocols... It's often very busy here. Not all staff are masked. And no one keeps safe distancing either. The shop has tight walking areas. So for those who are (or live with people who are) immunocompromised - just take extra precautions, or come at non-peak times.

Purchased a 6” Black forest birthday cake. Cake was delicious. But prices can be a little better. Like 3-5$ lesser than current. Donuts were also around 2-3$ each. But tastes good. Coffee was also good. Nice place to hangout for a while. Ambiance is good too.

Nice outdoor seating. Quick and friendly staff. Lots of different options. Coffee is okay but they make up for it with bakery items! Prices are also reasonable overall. If you’re in the area, it’s worth it to stop by for a visit, especially in the morning time when the seating outside is a bit less crowded.

I recently had to make a huge purchase of 400 slider buns for an event that i was going to cater for my business. I always come to Lazar for my baked goods. I contact Lazar same week, and asked if they would be able to accommodate a large order. I spoke to a very kind gentlemen, Antonio was very helpful. He took my contact down and in minutes assured me that it was possible and got me in touch with the amazing owner Francesca. The slider buns were amazing and delicious. As always their staff and the owner was amazing and we were really pleased with the service we received and the products we always buy from here. Thank you to the best bakery!

I was trying to be nice but the lady who picked up the phone was so rude! One of their Uber order (which I didnt order) delivered at my house. The driver must have delivered it at the wrong location, so I called to their store to let them know that their customer’s order was at my place and maybe they could contact that customer via Uber to let them know or maybe figure a way to make it up to that customer. The cake was not cheap, that customer might have spend over $50 to have his cake delivered, which never arrived eventually. The lady who picked up the phone was so rude to me as I’m trying to explain the situation to her and kept saying that “It’s not my problem!” I felt pity for any customer who just want a nice cake for their beloved ones. Hope this customer can see this review.

To me, Lazar is synonymous to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and freshly baked bread. I love that there is so much bread to choose from! The dining area is cozy and its where i usually have my first cup. While waiting for the caffeine to wake me up, I gaze around and find that am surrounded by beautiful cakes and bread oh so much bread! You will find some old timers leisurely having their first cup too and busy people buying freshly baked baguettes, croissants, cheese, deli meat, on their way to work or probably coming from work...they have a hot table too tucked away in the back where you can order pasta or a hot sandwich. I highly recommend Lazar to everyone!

By far the best bakery and cafe I’ve been to in the GTA! Such great options available that are baked fresh. Everything I’ve tried is exceptional and sooo delicious! If you come here you must try the natas, just as amazing as the way my Portuguese grandmother makes them. The staff is incredible and so helpful. You will not be disappointed!

Cannot get better. Staff is corteous . They make you feel so much at home. Prices are so less that its hard to believe how they manage. Extraordinary selection of cakes and pastries. The lunch items are simply amazing. We always hog on the Portuguese tarts, and shrimp/ chicken patties. Just too yummy. We also tried the caramel cheesecake which is to die for. Simply an amazing shop. We try going there atleast once a week... its such a charm

Introduced to this place by a family member, ever since I love going here for my bakery needs, cheese needs, and sweet cravings, beautiful show case and wife variety of deli selections.

Dessert-wise: Stick to the cheesecakes & *sometimes* the Tiramisu. Egg tarts are ok too, but I've had better elsewhere.

Donut-looking sweets are on the dry side, too dense, and cakes aren't as good as the cheesecakes.

Never get the cannoli. The turnover rate isn't high, so shell is soggy.

Breads are great! And I *believe* hot foods are ok too as I haven't had it in a while. Staff is friendly and efficient, no grumps or complaints here!

This place definitely deserves a bit higher than 3.5*, so I thought that I should give it a boost!

FOOD:
I had settled on one Large Sicilian Cannoli, which was $2.50. It looked appetizing behind the glass however, once I had bitten into it, it didn't taste very good. The shell was quite soft, with only a hint of crispiness, while the inside came out in chunks rather than creamy as it should be. Also, there were no chocolate chips which makes any cannoli taste better. I have had many Sicilian Cannolis over the years, and I have to say that this was a disappointment. This Sicilian Cannoli tasted as though it had been sitting there for quite some time. I suppose that their other baked goods are better tasting however, I would stay away from the Sicilian Cannolis in the future.

ATMOSPHERE:
The café had a lot of options, from a deli and cheese counter, to a baked goods counter, along with a variety of items on the shelves. Also, there was a section for guests to sit and enjoy their items, along with a hot table at the back of the café for the lunch rush. It was quite busy when I had gone on a Friday morning at around 10:30 am however, it was enjoyable. I found that this place was great for meeting up with friends and having a coffee and/or dessert.

SERVICE:
When I had ordered my item, the woman behind the baked goods counter told me to find a table and that she would bring the item to me. She then brought it over on a plate with a napkin, which was a great presentation. Also, when I had finished, I was wondering where to bring the dish that I had used. Another woman whom was behind the coffee counter came to take the dish away, providing me with a bill to pay at the cash register. She was also friendly, telling me that I needn't worry about the dish and that she would clean it up for me.

COST:
One Large Sicilian Cannoli: $2.50 + 5% HST = $2.63

WOULD YOU RETURN?
I would be interested in trying their lunch specials however, I don't think I would delve into the baked goods section once again as I was disappointed with the Sicilian Cannoli that I had ordered. The service and atmosphere were great though, along with the prices.

The desserts were actually decent in taste and portion size. Great selection of baked items, hot foods and other goods. I only wish their customer service could be just as good. The employees had a very negative attitude and gave dirty looks when I asked for assistance. One employee just threw my deli order at me and rudely walked away. The employees made me feel so unwelcome, it's not worth future visits. If you visit this place, quickly get what you need and go...the less you interact with the staff the better.

Nelson: I found this Portuguese bakery selling Egg Custard tarts and I just had to try some. I brought these over for a Birthday party and they were pretty popular. The shell is slightly different from the ones I had in Portugal, but still pretty good. The custard was great. I think these were the best I have had outside of Portugal (and Macau), but I haven't tried that many in Toronto, so my judgement is not complete. I look forward to trying more!

I've been going here almost everyday for years for lattes and coffees and it is the best bakery Mississauga has! There pastries, desserts and cakes are all splendid, especially the Portuguese style tarts and strawberry shortcake! They are to die for! Definitely recommend this place for friends and family! Obrigado Lazar and keep up the awesome food and drinks!

Don't believe the negative comments - ALL UNTRUE!. This place is one of the BEST Portuguese bakeries in Mississauga and I'm Portuguese! This bakery has made the top 5 list on insauga.com. You want good custard tarts! You go here :) They make them in house which is awesome because I've been to some Portuguese bakeries that don't make their custard tarts and order them in from other companies. If you're ever in the Square One area, track this bakery down and try their stuff. Everything from their bread to their deli to their hot table is awesome! And best part is their prices are excellent.

Avoid like the plague .... Unfortunately had a disappointing and frustrating experience at this bakery/cafe. Went for afternoon tea with family members post-confirmation ceremony. We were followed around the bakery and watched like a hawk by an elderly gentleman (who must be the proprietor), even while ordering pastries, eating at a table, or paying for our purchases. I would strongly suggest avoiding this bakery unless your wish is to be treated like a petty criminal for no apparent reason other than ethnicity alone. A sad commentary in this day and age, especially for an establishment in the service industry!

Great Place!!. I recently went to Lazar bakery for the first time and absolutely fell in love with the place! Lazar is such a great place to sit with friends and family and enjoy a nice cappuccino and a pastry or sandwich! When I walked into Lazar it reminded me of the large European cafes they have in Europe as I lived in Paris for two years. They have a really large selection of deli meat, cheeses and bread. I tried their portuguese tarts and I am now officially addicted, they are crispy on the outside and the custard in the middle is incredible! I would definitely recommend their Tarts ! Overall I am a huge fan of this place and I would say its unlike any other bakery I have ever been to in Canada! I will be coming back every Saturday!

Excellent selection of breads, deli meats, cheeses and of course...pastries. Favs are the cherry cheese cake and black forest cakes by the slice. Be cautious something the cakes can be a little dry. Most of the time all is fine. Great Sandwiches. You can go in, pick out your own fresh bun, watch them slice your meat and cheese. Great sandwishes. Not a lot of tables, but I've never had to wait for a seat.
