Review Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu - Mississauga

Megan Wai
Best tofu stew! Everything was so well prepared and it felt like a nice home cooked meal. The soup was piping hot and very flavourful. I love the fact that they serve the crispy bits of leftover rice in its hot pot with a bit of water!

Buk Chang Dong is still the chapel for Korean spicy tofu stew in the city. It's dotted all over the city, with a popular following. My better half for one couldn't resist going when we lived closer. While roaming through Mississauga, we were enthused by the idea of lunch there for the first time in a long time. The menu is simple: a small selection of Korean spicy tofu stews along with dishes like Bibimbap that pale in comparison. We always order #1 & #3. Soon Tofu with beef /mussel / shrimp for me; kimchi / beef / pork for her. A while after, boiling red cauldrons loaded with silky tofu arrive from the kitchen. Then crack a raw egg on top. Soup broth was well-balanced with rich savoury seasoning plus spicy heat. It was a bit strange that we were consistently served after though we were the first patrons. It was empty when we arrived but tables next to us were assigned shortly after. Some of the dine-in policies were quite lax when we visited during pandemic dining.

Delicious meals in a quant location. The service is up-to-par, wait times are decent, and food comes out hot and ready to eat. Flavorful food profiles and a low-key experience make this place a great go-to for a lunch or dinner out at a local Korean chain.

Ordered a squid and pork dish and there was only one piece of squid. Talked to the server, they took it back and brought us a new one with 6 pieces. Appreciate the willingness to listen to customers, but food needs better description. If squid is becoming too much then reflect it in the price or remove the ingredient completely. I ordered squid I want squid.

I grew up eating the soon tofu here and it's nice to revisit yesterday. This homefood and location NEVER disappoints and the amazing quality of food you get here is one word, underpriced. THANK YOU to the staff here and see you again soon!

Amazing Korean spot!! I always get the bibimbap and it is really delicious every time. The crispy rice at the bottom of the dolsot is the best part and the side dishes are very good. Great service from this family owned business. Highly recommend

Ordered for pickup and the 2 different soon tofu soup we ordered were both tasty! I loved that you can choose spicy level. The small side dishes that came with the soup were also nice!

They have authentic Korean soup! I always order regular spicy seafood & tofu soup with noodles. Must try out this restaurant if you like strong spicy taste!

Not as good as the Bloor street location downtown but it saves a drive and there's lots of parking. I always order the same thing and for some reason it wasn't as tasty here. It was good but not that addictive 'I gotta have it every week' good.
Janny
It's not bad but not that amazing sides dishes are good menu is limited overall it's just average the service is good and they serve purple rice on a hot stone for all dishes which is unique!

It is with sadness and frustration that I write this review. I am a foodie of sorts in international cuisine and this korean resto does soon tofu well except... when you find a hair in it. I also found a long black hair in their bi bim bap. And a third on another occasion in their fermented brown bean side dish. What is truly disappointing, is that there was no apology on all three occasions. I warned them that I would not be coming back if there was a strike three. This is the epitome of recklessness and lack of etiquette. How can everyone in the kitchen not wear a hair net? Most upsetting situation in a restaurant, ever.

A busy environment that has delicious Korean food. A very simple menu and worth every penny. I love tofu soup and I try it whenever I can. It's the best tofu soup I've had outside of BC. Comes with healthy purple rice and egg to crack into the hot stone. There's different options for how spicy you want as well. I'd recommend coming here!

Comfort food. I love coming here on cold days for some good old tofu soup. Never disappointed and always comes out quick! Taken many friends here who love it!! Great price and food!!!

Simple Menu, Delicious Food. Ordered the kimchi soon tofu and it was amazing! I usually don't like tofu but this was an exception. The kick in the soup was just right, especially when paired with the purple rice. Also tried the dumpling soon tofu and the bulgogi soup... everything was delicious! The staff was so friendly and catered to us efficiently. The menu might have only a few items but I'm sure all delicious and not expensive. As much as I go to the korea town location, I would come back here since it is much closer to home.

The food in this place is flippin awesome! They only have about 10 things on the menu but all are great!
My fav I usually get is the Broiled Squid & Pork with hot pepper paste!! It's spicy but fabulous! I've been coming here for about 2 years and the food is always consistent. BK

Coming back again and again, I've tried everything on the menu! ! Delicious food and friendly staff!!

Dinner review. I had read all the reviews on this Restaurant before going there.
On a Friday Night, it was packed with people, but luckily we got a seat. I was kind of disappointed that they don't have tea or water to start with. We were sitting there for almost 5 minutes, and no service, I am not angry at all because I saw both the waiter and waitress running around non-stop, so that's understandable. So, I decided to get the menu myself. yup, the menu is very simple, and less than ten items. My husband is quite big, so I have to order three sets of dinner courses. I am not surprise, each course was so little , and the bowl is so small. However, the food was good.
Disappointed on the few side dishes. This restaurant is like a fast-food restaurant to me, people come and go like in 15 minutes or so. Anyway I give this restaurant a 75 percent.

The best Korean food in the GTA!!! Hands down

A tasty steal!. Decided to check this place out and boy was I surprised! So delicious, so much food for such an amazing price! I ordered the kimchi soon tofu and omg everything was so good. There's a reason this place has such a high rating. I'm coming right back tomorrow for dinner.

Simple menu, great food. Typical korean style restaurant that sells few things but makes them really good. Their variations of Soon Dubu(tofu) Jiggae are great.

Amazing, every time. The menu is limited, but when food is that good, there is no way you can't find a dish you don't like on it! I love that their soon tofu spicy is actually really spicy (to my liking). Their meats on a sizzling plate are so scrumptious - I don't think I can get tired from eating them. And the side dishes? Are consistently: bean sprouts, kimchi, radish, and beans. You can either share all of whatever you order, or leave the restaurant extremely full after paying under $13$ (with taxes and tips) for one dish - either way, you'll find yourself coming back again for your next meal(s).

Best kimchi stew. This is one of my favourite Korean restaurants for kimchi stew in all of the GTA and trust me, I have been to and tried many places. I am the type of person that almost can never finish my entree, but every time I come here, I finish every drop. There prices are very fair consideing they also give you free side dishes. I try to eat here as often as possible. The staff is also very friendly.

Tofu + Dumpling Stew!. There is really only one reason I would come here, but it's a really good reason! The tofu and dumpling stew is YUM. Unfortunately, their other dishes are mediocre, but that is fine by me as I order the same thing every time I come here!

Always nice. owner present and greets customers. food is great and good price.

AWESOME. Cheap, service was good, the tofu soup is a must!

Disappointing. I normally go to the Bloor or Yonge branch, but I decided to try this branch today. I was very disappointed at the terrible service I received. My server, who was a young asian girl with dyed hair, asked what I wanted to eat, and did not say another word to me after that, even when bringing my food. She spent the whole time sitting down and talking very loudly in Korean to another server. The rice and water soup that's given at the end had rock hard pieces of rice in it, and I had to be very careful while chewing. I will not be eating here again.

Simply, this is one of the best Korean Tofu Stew restaurants in GTA.

Love Love LOVE. Great food, big portions, ALWAYS piping hot (which is amazing in the cold weather!) Service is always fast and friendly. And considering how I can get pretty indecisive, the short menu makes deciding on point because each dish is good but it's easy to have a favourite!!

Fantastic little place on Hurontario.. Decided to try this place out based on the reviews here, and was thoroughly impressed. The value for the price you pay is amazing. You get various appetizer dishes, which are refilled at no extra charge. The main courses alone are worth the price you pay. The food is very flavourful and fills you up, for under 10 bucks per person. The service is fast and friendly. If you're in the area, definitely try this place out. You won't be disappointed.

Great, tasty food at fantastic price. I've eaten everything on the menu and none disappoints!

Word to the wise. Sunday seems yo be the owners day off.... Still good, nit the other 7 days of the week are better

Very good authentic korean food, fair prices(nothing over 10$), unlimited sides(bean sprouts, kimchi, radish, beans/nuts(?) ), good service, able to tell them how spicy to make the dishes(white, mild, hot, etc)
Downsides are limited seats so you have to wait in line for a spot, cramped table space(not alot of room for privacy), very small menu(there is like 8 items on the list) ,and they only take debit purchases over $10 which is silly since all the items on their menu are lower than $10(basically you'd have to add something ontop of your bill). Overall, nice place and nice food but can get tedious and boring after.

Love it!. Fast service, and low prices for filling, delicious tofu soups. Simple menu items make it easy to choose.

The Best of Ktown in Mississauga. This was one of my faves in the Bloor location before I realized it was in my hometown of Mississauga. Boy, was I ecstatic to have real, authentic korean food that was not in Koreatown (which is rather inconvenient to travel from Mississauga).

Luckily they opened one here and it's definitely one of the best if not the best. They have a small one-page menu, but in my opinion, it's better this way because everything is good and legit. Prices are also very reasonable (below $10 per entree) and with rice and side dishes, you will leave very satisfied.

This place cannot be missed!

I love it! Service is friendly, food is affordable and delish!

Service was very fast and friendly. The bulgogi beef was amazing and the Kimchi was very good as well.

Spicy comfot. My nickname growing up was Tofu, as I have a pale white skin for an Asian guy. On top of it, I am a Tofu mania so this restaurant made perfect sense for my visit.
You don't have much choice here - spicy soft tofu soup bowl with different ingredients in: beef, pork, seafood or veggie.
For the ones who can't handle spicy food, they also have bulgogi - traditional Korean beef dish - and bibimbap - another traditional Korean rice dish.
Catch here is that you and your wallet will be both full after eating.
20 dollar bill is more than enough to eat here for 2 people.
You also get unlimited side dishes of kimchi, marinated beans, marinated bean sprouts, and spicy radish.
The soup itself is what you get in typical spicy tofu soup - hot, spicy, soft, and addicting.
They serve you a bowl of rice right out of the stone pot, and they pour barley tea into the stone bowl to make a perfect congee to finish off the meal.
How brilliant is that?

This place is already famous/popular, and if you haven't been here yet, you are missing out.
Verdict: 8/10

Fast and efficient. The menu is a good size. Just a few dishes but I'm sure this is also why the food was good and was served quickly. The portions are a bit smaller then other Korean restaurants I have been to but the prices are low and so its not to bad. However I'd pay more though to have a bit more. The customary Korean side dishes were really good, better then I've had at other similar restaurants. Very much enjoyed this place.

Food Size Serving. It's almost perfect... my only comment is the size serving is a little bit lesser..

I hope they can add more...

Also, they should have the pokbone soup..

Everything That's Great About Korean Food. Simple and rustic dishes with huge flavour--that's what I love about Korean food. There's a wonderful confidence and lack of pretension to it--a sense that this is exactly how food should be prepared, and that quality comes through most in Korean stews. With only eleven menu items at Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu (half of which are tofu stews), we ordered the seafood variant which comes with stone pot-baked rice. The tofu was soft and fresh, and the broth was complex and adequately spicy with a fresh, fishy tasty. We also ordered squid and pork on a sizzling platter composed of green and white onions, tender, fatty pork and strips of squid, smottered in spicy and sweet pepper paste sauce. On one of the hottest days of the year, it may have been a slightly wintery meal, but who cares? It was absolutely delicious, and all of it came in under $20. In short, it was one of the best meals I've ever had. I cannot recommend this place enough.

Just as great as the Bloor location. This place has the same menu and prices as the one at Bloor/Christie. In fact, the owner of the Mississauga location is the sister of the owner of the Bloor one. If you have been to the original one, the quality at the Mississauga location is just as great. I usually order the veggie soon dobu and it always hits the spot!

Simple menu, good food, & prices!. Being a fan of soon tofu, i.e. tofu stew, I was sorta waiting for this restaurant to open! I believe it did so a coupla weeks ago.

(There aren't any Korean restaurants that I know of that specialise in primarily soon tofu. WOW & Man Doo Hyang offer it, but it's not the main item served.)

The menu isn't very extensive with tofu bowls + various ingredients/combinations including: seafood, dumpling, mushrooms, etc. Also included with each bowl is a raw egg comes with the bubbling bowl so that it can cook in the broth AND purple rice. You can choose your level of spiciness.

As with all Korean restaurants, side dishes were also complimentary and included: kimchee, pickled radish, sweet soybeans, & beansprouts.

At $7.08/bowl, it's a lot of food! Great deal and healthy, as nothing is fried or fattening.

I tried to ask the waitress if the tofu was made in-house, but she said, in broken English that she assumes so. In any event, it tasted fresh. My side dishes were replenished without asking with is a total bonus!

Aside from the tofu bowls, there's also bimbimbab and some bulgogi option. Both in or around the same price.

This particular location was a former Thai restaurant, but I hope it's here to stay...especially come Winter time!

Overall I would rate this place a 90% as the price is fantastic, the food is great, and service is kind! 10$ for all of this is a big hit! This restaurant is always full of koreans too! so you know its good!

Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu is a very budget friendly Korean restaurant. Their menu is limited with only 10 dishes and 6 of them are variations of soon tofu which they specialize in. We were greeted by a friendly waitress, and given the menu. We both knew what we wanted, so we got our order in pretty quickly. Before our meal arrived, we were given four small dishes of bachan (kimchi, bean sprout, radish kimchi and beans). Instead of soon tofu, I opted for the broiled BBQ (beef) with hot stone pot rice ($10.62). The dish arrived on a sizzling hot plate, and accompanied with a bowl of freshly made purple rice. This was a solid dish as the portion was generous, and I really enjoyed the flavorful beef. John got the kimchi soon tofu (pork) with hot stone pot rice ($7.97). You get to choose the spice level for the soon tofu from the following selection: extra spicy, regular spicy, medium, mild and white. Overall, this is good comfort food for the cold weather that we're currently experiencing. Address: 3085 Hurontario St, Mississauga, ON, L5A 4K9

The only thing you need to know about kimchee is it is awesome and if you have not tried it then you should drop everything, take the subway and get off at Christie Station and walk down Bloor. Kimchee can actually be made with anything from Radish to cucumber and is a major staple in Korean food. It also happens to be a major staple in my diet also...cause it rocks.

--> Nelson @ Hurontario & Dundas: Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu is a Korean place that serves (almost exclusively) inexpensive Tofu stews. And when I say inexpensive, I mean $7 an order! First come the appetizers, a kimchi, a kimchi flavoured root vegetable?, sprouts and these strong tastes seeds, not sure what they are called. I had to order the restaurant's namesake, the Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu. Yes they named their restaurant after this dish. It comes out in a piping hot pot full of ingredients. Later in the meal I had the sense to lift some of the ingredients out to see what was inside. Mine was spicy (you can request your desired level of spiciness) and although there are quite a few ingredients, there isn't a lot of food, but what was there is tasty. It is served with some purple rice, and later in the meal they bring out the pot the rice was baked in, filled with water to soften it. With the leftover soup from the stew, it's like a whole bonus meal! Kitty had the Stone pot bibimbab.
