Review Oshima Sushi - Milton

Simon Pellegrino
This place isn't what it use to be. The food itself is okay, though I have begun to find a blandness to some items. If you order a large amount of Sashimi, they will skimp you on the size of it. The more you order to your table, the less the staff stops by to check on you. It feels like they are avoiding us on purpose.

We went for an afternoon AYCE but the food was not so fresh even at an early time. We tried to finish the food but some rolls we couldn't even taste the rice, could only take what's inside. It could have been better but the service was bad. It could be an excuse that because it was the end of her shift and that, but her attitude was not cool. She let us waited for a good 10 minutes even though the restaurant had many spots for 3 people. Then she greeted us with an I-don't-give-a-... face, and led us to our table without a word, and till the rest of our meal. Just come and go. I really hope the place could get better, because the restaurant itself is neat and cosy. I don't want it to be a waste. Looking forward for the changes if I come back here again.

Rolls are very basic, they typically use more filler then fish in them. Sashimi for dinner is pathetic. They slice pieces as small as possible. Often bring less shashimi to the table then you order or bring it out so late your almost full.

It's not the best but it's not the worst either. Came in maybe an hour after opening and ordered the usual sushi items. Honestly the sushi didnt stand out for me, it's like buying those cooled sushi boxes you get at the local grocery store/mall. I got the teriyaki chicken and the chicken was pretty dry, I liked the sauce tho. So my first experience at this place was just fine.

The food is cheap, but the quality of food is less than desirable. The menu is as sparse as the fish, and believe me, the fish is sparse. Many items you order conveniently don't show up until you ask wait staff about them. The missing item trick is pretty common at GTA AYCE sushi joints, except that your fish is missing in your sushi rolls. For $14.99 you can get full at lunch for cheap IF you order lots of meat side dishes and stick to sashimi orders for your fish.

I did a review a few weeks ago and I gave them 4 star because the food quality was good and I didn't mind having subpar service. But I'm just grabbing lunch here and I took out the extra rice they rolled on the maki roles. The server came and told me that I have to eat the rice or they will charge us for it. I asked her how much she will charge she said 3 dollars... I took a few pictures on how they are increasing the size of the fillers and decreasing the amount of pricier raw ingredients. It's a business I understand but I think we won't be coming back as often. Pictures are of shrimp tempura with all the fried breading, its bad for your health too.

Enough is enough! Living in Milton for over 3 years and loving sushi, every 6 months I forget just how bad Oshima is and convince my wife to give them another chance. The service here is horrible, In 3 years I haven't seen a smile and the workers seem to absolutely hate their jobs. One plus is they have a good selection on rolls, but the sushi and sashimi need significant work. The fish to rice ratio in sushi is roughly 10/90; the fish is so thin that it melts in the soy sauce before even approaching your mouth. The sashimi can be likened to 1x1inch pieces of parchment paper in thickness and overall size, an order of 10 pieces is about equivalent to 1 normal piece at another establishment. The best part of all is how the staff seem to play games with your orders by consistently giving you less pieces than you order. I have attached a picture of my order of 20 salmon sashimi, the result: 8 pieces that if combined could fit comfortably into a tic-tac box. If you are in Milton and crave sushi save the frustration and go to Aji Sai.

Good sushi place located in Milton. The food is nice and the servers are pleasant enough. The pricing is reasonable as well. Have been more than once with the same friend and we both had an enjoyable time each trip. I especially like the calamari as it wasn't rubbery

The service is not good in general. Today I had the worst experience at this restaurant ever. I walked into the restaurant by myself while a waitress named Tina was busy closing the bills in front of the POS. She gave me a very DIRTY look (maybe because the way I dressed) without saying anything to me. She continued closing her bills for another 15 secs. All of the sudden, she turned to me and told me to have a seat with a very RUDE tone of voice. I then told her that it was ok for me to wait. She then gave me another DIRTY look from head to toes. I was so embarrassed and upset. I decided not to stay, but before I left I asked her if I could talk to the manager. She said there was no manager. I told her how I felt about her attitude. She said "It doesn't matter" without saying "Sorry". This waitress gave me bad service many times before. I will never go back. I hope the owner sees this review.

Service is slow, not very friendly and you don’t always get what you have ordered from the menu. Sometimes you feel rushed as well. The sushi itself is average. Some AYCE sushi restaurants seems to be going down hill these days and this restaurant is one of them.

I agree with most of the reviews of this place- sushi portions were very tiny ,and even the specialty rolls were a disappointment. There was no flavour in any of the other dishes, like the chicken teriyaki and the curry shrimp. It's way too expensive for the quality of food that is served ,and customer service was ok, but slow- will not return.

Service is slow and rude, and the restaurant wasn't even full nor busy (as seen in pictures). The sushi rolls were poorly done - a lot of rice and very little filling. Small tiny sashimi pieces on top of the sushi rolls also... This place is OK if you're REALLY craving AYCE

Terrible food. Sashi is so thin that they have to put it on rice for you to find it on your plate.
Veery slow service. Disrespectful waitress.

I think some of these reviews could be unduly harsh if my experience is any indication. The food was fresh and good. Service was prompt and not unreasonably attentive. The variety of dishes available is in line with some of the best all-you-can-eat sushi places we frequent.

All in all, I'd go back to Oshima Sushi and didn't experience any indication of some of the harsh negatives reported by others.

facebook.com/groups/rvrestaurantreviews

As far as all you can eat this place is pretty decent. I've had both much better and worse sushi so definitely middle of the road here. I've had a few incidents of issues with the service but overall it's a good cheap date night.

I really enjoy how quick the service is.
Sushi always come out quickly and is always good, price is pretty decent for all you can eat.
Staff gets all jobs done quickly and are pleasant

Very good AYCE food. Good food and prices. I'm not disappointed. ..

Nothing To Rave About. We had come here on a Monday afternoon at around 4:30 pm for a late lunch/early dinner. When we arrived, we were the only patrons in the restaurant. We walked into the foyer, and noticed that a lady came out to walk us to a table.

We had asked if we could have a larger table in order to fit all of the food on it, however, she walked us over to small table for two (as there were only two of us). We found the table to be quite small but we were able to manage throughout the meal.

The lady whom seated us, handed us menus as we sat down. She didn’t seem too friendly, and didn’t introduce herself or smile during the entire time that we were dining. She also hardly said a word to us, only brought the food out, and took away the dishes once we were finished. We found it a bit uncomfortable as it seemed like she was uninterested in serving us.

As we browsed the menu (which wasn’t too visually appealing), we wrote down the items that we wanted on a sheet, placing the quantity for each item. We had chosen the AYCE option, which cost $18.95 per person on a Monday after 4:00 pm.

We filled out our entire sheet, then waved it in the air in order to get the lady’s attention. We had settled on Calamari, Mushroom Beef Roll, Cheese Wonton, Miso Soup, Seaweed Salad, Shrimp Tempura, Beef Teriyaki, Chicken Teriyaki, Salmon Teriyaki, Spicy Crispy Salmon Hand Roll, Philadelphia Roll, Green Dragon Roll, and Salmon Sushi Pizza.

After we had handed the paper to the lady, we noticed that a few more people were starting to trickle into the restaurant. The restaurant itself was medium-sized, however, the décor wasn’t too chic, it seemed to be quite plain-looking, nothing that really ‘stuck-out’ at us as impressive.

After about five minutes of us having had placed our order, the items began to arrive. The Miso Soup and Seaweed Salad arrived first; the Seaweed Salad had a bit of a different taste to it, not like the one that we are usually used to at other establishments. It was also quite small compared to other establishments.

After we had finished our Miso Soup and Seaweed Salad, the other items began arriving one-by-one within about ten minutes. The Cheese Wontons were good however, they weren’t too hot (temperature wise). The Chicken Teriyaki was horrible, tasting stale and burnt on the bottom; we attributed this to having been warmed-up in the microwave (especially since we had heard the microwave dinging in the back).

The Beef Teriyaki was sliced much too small, with many pieces difficult to pick-up. The Salmon Sushi Pizza was actually quite good, and hot (temperature-wise), which made it taste even better. All of the sushi rolls that we had ordered were nicely-made however, they tasted warm, and also were quite small.

Once we had finished our main items, we settled on dessert, which was Mango Ice Cream, Green Tea Ice Cream, Vanilla Ice Cream, and Deep-Fried Banana. Before our dessert had arrived, both my husband and I had to excuse ourselves as we had stomach pains that we were experiencing. Once we had arrived back to the table, our desserts were there waiting for us. All of the items that we had ordered were good however, they were typically standard for dessert, nothing different from other establishments that we had visited.

We then asked for the bill, which came out to around $42 for the two of us (with tax included). We found this to be a tad pricey, but somewhat reasonable considering the higher costs of AYCE establishments elsewhere. In conclusion, we won’t be returning to this restaurant anytime in the future. We found the food to be subpar, the service to be lousy, and the atmosphere to be boring.

Will not go back. Wanted to try a variety of dishes as we typically do at AYCE Japanese restaurants. The rolls were decent (but falling apart) and the rest of the meal was awful including miso soup, edamame (how do you screw that up?!?), a thai dish and a chinese dish.

Great Sushi. Loved the whole experience. Go hungry and not in a rush. It was a very relaxing atmosphere where your food is made to order; you can share plates, relax and enjoy conversation between servings. Will definitely return SOON!

Service is horrible but the food is good. My wife and me have dined here on several occasions and we cannot return because of the service. The first time we came it was at lunchtime and received excellent service because it was not busy. A few weeks later we came for supper and that's when we realized this place is too busy. We like to order seaweed salad at the beginning of our order and both times it did not arrive. We have waited for over 1 hr for our order and walked out only to receive our food as we were putting on our jackets. I have asked for extra wasabi and tea from GH servers and they do not bring it. There takeout is way to busy to seat customers or to clean tables. This has happened many times and we have given up with the restaurant. Too is to bad because they have a good menu.

I think its the best sushi in milton. I Go all the time. It is really good.

Not good at all!!! Never again

Horrible!. There is horrible just awful customer service... The foods okay but the service is slow and takes so long to cook steamed rice!
Jadeelicious
Rude ignorant servers. So disorganized giving orders to wrong tables and not giving you what you order. Seems like they like to be mean and nasty on purpose. I hope this restaurant leaves Milton and a nice restaurant takes its place

No MSG. I recently had a bad reaction to MSG in a Japanese restaurant in Georgetown,Since that I check restaurants carefully for MSG. Oshima Sushi in Milton is MSG free, the food is very good and the price is certainly reasonable. Not enough people are aware of the dangers of MSG

Not as bad as these reviews make it out to be. I love Oshima sushi, I've never had a bad experience here. The fish is fresh tasting, the food comes out hot. Pretty affordable. The service could use some work, but I get that feeling from a lot of AYCE sushi restaurants.

The Japanese food was average; however had more shrimp on the menu than usual. Worst Thai I've ever had in my life. Service was horrible.

Stay AWAY. It was literally the worst ayce sushi restaurant I've ever been to in my life. The food was NOT fresh. The only thing we ordered that actually tasted normal was the water. Even the ice cream tasted strange. The service was also pretty bad; the servers looked like they hated their job and were pretty rude. Safe to say, I will not be going back there again!

Terrible. Went to Oshima Sushi for lunch when it first open. Service and menu were both horrible. Staff was rude. AYCE lunch menu was small and expensive. The food was awful. Will never go back.

Amazing food, Terrible service. I just called to place an order for delivery at 6pm on Mother's Day. I was told by the rude woman who answered the phone that the delivery guy was busy at the moment and I would have to come pick my food up if I wanted to place an order. She explained that the dining area was crowded with people so they were not doing any deliveries. She laughed and giggled at me the entire time I questioned her about not using a delivery guy on staff for his actual job. Terrible attitude. We decided to order from the Ivy Arms instead. I will never order from this place again after this interaction.

This is actually my second negative experience with this restaurant. I have previously ordered from this restaurant twice before deciding to sit in for the first time on my birthday March 29th. The wait staff hurried around and did not appear very interested in answering any questions or having any interactions with us at all really. After placing our first order, I requested a water as the woman walked away, she nodded and said yes, but then never brought it the entire time we were there. Food sporadically showed up at our table and was never identified for us. My son was 2 at the time and the apple juice they brought for him was given to us in a soup container that had a hole punched into the top for the straw. It was heavy for him to handle and awkward for him to drink out of. Overall, the atmosphere was very hurried and though we were greeted with a smile, it felt more like they were just waiting for us to leave from the moment we sat down.

-----11 May, 2014-----

Amazing food, Terrible service. Finally a good sushi place in milton. This place is fantastic! Staff is friendly and sushi is fresh. Which is a big deal to us, since we are very picky with our sushi. Enjoyed the selection and will be back again!

This place is great. The staff are very friendly and food comes at a good pace. I love the fact that Oshima delivers and always throws in some treats.

Shameful. I've been enjoying the food here weekly and sometimes up to 3 times per week. I've introduced friends and clients. The food is great and service for the most part is pleasant. Recently they added a new server. She is the least friendly which is surprising because the rest of the staff are wonderful. Tonight I went for dinner with my daughters ages 8 and 15. I asked the not so friendly server what the price of a green tea, edamame beans and 1 scoop of ice cream was to determine if the buffet price of $13.95 plus tax and tip would be comparable to just paying for these items separately. She snapped back some senseless response and walked away. There goes the first rudeness flag. We proceeded to order our food and then as she picked up the second order I asked if my youngest could get her tea and her beans. They came back a while later and took the 3rd order and again I asked where the beans were. They filled up the tea and we waited again. My older daughter and I finished our meals and then the beans finally came out along with the ice cream. I told the server that the 8 yr old did not eat anything and that I expected a charge for the tea, bean and 1 scoop of ice cream. Her response was "NO! You said she 8 she pay buffet price!" Wish I could add sound here so e true effect of her rudeness would be heard. Then she stormed off into the back and started bitching about us. NOT IMPRESSED!!!!

Hopefully the manager reads this and makes it right. She didn't eat from the buffet and I advised that she would order these 3 specific items. It would not have been much of an effort at all for them to have rectified the bill!! I will revert my clients and friends back to Hanayana which is unfortunate. Oshima - do the right and honorable thing. Karma awaits

Like a lot of the reviews above the service and atmosphere make it stand out over the other sushi places in Milton and has delicious food and options!

Fantastic food! Great selection! My only complaint is that they sit customers way too close together! There will be like 2 or 3 tables taken, and they all be seated at adjacent tables, with the other 20 tables left empty. People don't want to sit RIGHT beside people at another table. Spread out your customers!

Just normal. The food is no as good ,didnt wow me,,

I have had sushi from many places and Oshima is consistently delicious! Their servers are excellent and speak English very well (in comparison to other sushi joints). The food is all very fresh and well priced. My new favourite sushi spot

One of the better sushi restaurants in Milton. We used to go to Japan buffet and aji sai a lot. Japan buffet is dirty. And aji sai has great food but their service is lacking. Oshima is the place for sushi. Good service, great food, awesome atmosphere too!
