Review Gold City Restaurant - Milton

Naushin Amin
Worst Chinese food ever! Please go to the best Chinese in Milton, that's " Royal Garden"! Gold city food is so bad and bland. No salt, no spice. #1.The chowmein was just saltless boiled noodles and boiled vegetables full of hugely cut bell peppers. #2. The fried rice was tasteless#3. Beef was edible but loaded with hugely chopped bland bell peppers.#4. Orange chicken ( or whatever it was) was rubbery and bland. One of the worst Chinese food we ever tasted and didn't serve plain steamed rice with entrees as promised and paid. Never ever try again or recommend anyone!

I cannot believe all the raving reviews! It seems to me an average person has no idea what a decent westernized Chinese food take out tastes like! This restaurant offers friendly service, timely and hot meals but the food has no taste or flavour; you are essentially getting an average quality Chinese food you’d get in any food court.

The price of this shop is much more expensive than that in the same district, the taste is also average, it is not worth the high score, and the service attitude is not good...

Yesterday I ate my modest dinner meal at Gold City Chinese Restaurant. It was possibly the most fulfilling experience I've had my entire life. I had the sauteed beef and it caused an explosion of flavour in my taste buds as I chewed the tender, savoury meat and drool openly spilled out of my mouth. I then ate a spoon of the perfectly cooked rice to complement the salty beef and a harmonious balance of flavour was created. I quickly wolfed down the rest of my meal joyfully and then called for my bill. The host that came up to me was the kindest, most handsome, muscular, and smart young man that I've ever seen in my life. He smelled lightly of a floral perfume and I was invigorated as he bent down to give me the payment machine. I'm sure that his memory will linger with me for many moons to come. 10/10 would recommend.

Love this place. Its our "Go To" spot for Chinese food in Milton. The food is consistently good, portion sizes are generous and the service is great. For one reason or another we have tried other Chinese food places around town but always end up coming back to Gold City. Nobody else compares to their quality and service. We only ever had one issue in all the times we have ordered there. We once got pork in our Shanghai Noodles after asking for none. When we called back the restaurant the problem was resolved without and hassle. Without question they replaced the dish. Before we knew it we were enjoying the same great tasting food we've come to know and love over the past 10 years. Can't wait for our next visit!

Of all the Chinese restaurants in Milton, it's Gold City that I enjoy the most. Everytime I try others and I find myself wishing I had ordered from Gold City.

Family owned and run restaurant with great food. Once, our whole family dropped in and the owners were just sitting down to eat before they closed. They got up and fed us all before they got their meal. They always remember how my nephew likes his favourite dish prepared and are happy to accommodate our preferences. They remember us by name and are the nicest people.

Service is horrible, and food is horrible. Do not go here!!!! The try to charge you extra for everything very disappointing considering the food is not very good.
Very disappointed with their delivery service after being told they would take an hour to an hour and a half they were still an extra half hour later then they said they would be. I understand being busy but as a customer you shouldn't have to call to make sure your order is still coming. Although they were polite it's bad customer service to take two hours to deliver anything. I suggest hiring more drivers so you can keep up with the backlog

Have been ordering for years but after last nights sweet and sour scallops, that made me ill, I can never order from them again. The worse Chinese food I have ever ate (or unable to eat). I'll have to look for a new place in town. Did you get a new cook or just had a horrible night... i'll never know.

Last night I ordered some chicken balls from Gold City location in Milton at 425 Main Street. Today after finishing my left overs i noticed that there was a bug, that looks like a fly, cooked into my chicken balls. I called the store owner, Mike, and told him i was coming in to show him what i found. When going into Gold City the dining area was filthy. Food on the floors, staining on the walls, water stained roof tiles and bottles of liquor with layers of caked on dust. Very unsanitary conditions. After the manager, who was very hesitant, to give me my money back took down my number and told my wife to go by food somewhere else from now on; why because I reported a problem. Not even once did he even apologize, not even once, while being very rude and disrespectful Avoid eating here at all costs.

I haven't written a review in a while but tonight's experience deserves some words.
We placed an order at 5:30 pm. We were told eta would be about 45 minutes. At 7:05 we called the restaurant to see where the food was. We were told that the driver had left some time ago and to call back if she hadn't arrived in 15 minutes. At 7:14 the doorbell rang. I answered the door and asked the driver what had happened as we had ordered almost 2 hours ago. The very young lady( I use lady generously) said nothing. She said she'd just gotten the call. I told her we'd called and were told she'd left quite a while ago. She denied it. I checked the food and found it was still warm so I paid without leaving a tip. We were starving and it was too late to place another order elsewhere.
While I was at the door, someone else had called to inform that the delivery person had arrived and if anything would be done for the inconvenience. They said the girl who delivered the food was the manager and they'd have her call when she returned. She had already left during the call.
She called when she returned to the restaurant and before my friend could get a proper word in the girl ripped into her about how she was treated at the door, that the staff never told her she'd left a long time ago, and that we should have checked the food because she was sure it was hot. There was no apology or acknowledgement that she had been horribly late, in fact, she tried to imply we hadn't ordered at 5:30 but later. I guess she forgot that the time of our order was printed on the credit slip. She was rude and abrasive and made my friend feel like it was our fault she was late. She said she thought it had been my friend at the door. My friend is amazingly patient with fools so she was able to eloquently explain that in this instance, customer service was sorely lacking. She pointed out that had we been told about the delay or at the very least received an apology, all would have been well. But considering we were (emphasis on were) frequent and loyal customers (our whole family spread around Milton orders from here, 4 households with orders over $70 each time) we were amazed at the attitude. Gold City is a small business, you'd think customer service would be paramount. The girl is apparently the owners' daughter. I wonder if they know how atrocious her behaviour is when she makes a mistake. As my friend tried to explain, it's ok to mess up if you make it right. Her attitude didn't make it right. Further, as a business owner, there is no excuse for her tone and language when speaking to customers.
My friend was able to negotiate a $20 credit for the food that was actually cold when we opened it up.
Sadly, our family won't be calling Gold City again. Too bad because we all thought it was the best Chinese food in Milton (which isn't saying much). I don't want to pay to be treated poorly.
They shouldn't call themselves a Chinese restaurant. This is certainly not a Chinese Restaurant! Every single Chinese knows without a doubt that in Chinese "Chow mein" literally means fried noodle, but the "pork Chow Mein" we ordered has no noodle in it at all.

We thought it was a mistake at first, but their employee explained that that's what it suppose to be, pork chow mein is pork with bean sprout, the dry noodle is actually the craker on the side.

I lost words to respond after hearing this, all I can do is laughing like I just heard a joke. They really shouldn't call themselves Chinese restaurant without basic Chinese knowledge.

Begging For Tips and Poor Customer Service. Why they lost my business:
- The delivery driver begged for a tip at my door, implying that the tip wasn't big enough. Nothing was done about it upon complaint.
- They offer delivery service ($4), but require you to give them directions in the age of the GPS/Google Maps.

Milton has, perhaps, some of the most lackluster take-out and dine-in choices I've experienced in a city. I've only lived in Milton for a year, but I've yet to find many places I feel comfortable eating at or ordering from thus far. Out of the Chinese restaurants, Gold City's food was the best, BUT it's the most generic, "from frozen" Chinese food you can get. There's absolutely nothing special about what they offer - it's very run-of-the-mill.

My issue isn’t really with the food, however, it’s with the service. My fiancé placed her order and asked what their delivery fee is ($4). We only live five kilometres away from Gold City, but we were both too lazy/busy to pick it up - first mistake. The person taking her order asked for street-by-street directions. My fiancé questioned if they had a GPS or access to Google Maps, to which the response was “No”. If you’re a business offering paid delivery, in absolutely no way should the onus be placed on your customer to get you to their house. That’s just ridiculous.

Our order came to roughly $31 including the $4 delivery charge (amounting to $24 worth of food before taxes). The delivery driver arrived, and I placed the money and a small tip into his open hand. He uses his finger to wade through the change and looks back up at me in disbelief. I told him it’s all there. He says, “Usually you give a bigger tip.” My response was that we’re already paying $4 for delivery, which should be going to you. He says it doesn’t, which made me ask what the $4 charge goes toward – putting things in a paper bag? Giving him a tip meant we would be paying around $7 just to have the food brought to the door. Some people would argue that I’m being ignorant, but it doesn’t cost me $7 to drive five kilometres. So there he was, the delivery driver, standing at my door on a rainy day asking for more money with an open palm. Never has anyone ever asked me for a bigger tip.

Instantly infuriated, I gave him $3 more and slammed the door. I immediately called Gold City to recount what had just happened. Gold City’s response was that they don’t beg for tips. Uh, it just happened and why would anyone even have such a policy? That's not the issue here. I asked where the delivery charge ends up and they said part of it goes to the driver. I asked what was to be done about my experience and they said he would speak to the driver. I rephrased the question and asked what they were going to do for me personally, a disgruntled, first-time customer... nothing, but they had parting words.

Gold City proceeded to tell me that the next time I ordered, I should order at least $27 dollars’ worth of food to be eligible for free delivery and that I only ordered $24 worth. Hold on, why wasn’t that mentioned on the phone when we asked about the delivery charge? I promptly replied that there wouldn’t be a next time and I feel taken by the whole experience. Nothing was said in return, not even an apology. My phone was hung up.

Like I said, the food is fine, nothing to write home about, but their stance and attitude has lost them a customer and, perhaps, more customers out of principal if my story has changed your mind. I don't tolerate this type of behaviour when I'm paying for a service. Nobody should.

Loved this place. Good quality food with nice flavor. We had the hot and sour soup, Cantonese chow mein, sweet and sour spare ribs, breaded chicken, and general Tao chicken. All tasted great! Finally found a good Chinese restaurant in Milton.

We are looking for a Chinese restaurant in Milton. We've been using Mr. Dumpling since we moved here, it's great but doesn't have chow mien or bbq pork slices.

So, we decided to try Gold City as they offer these items.

Ordered egg rolls, spring rolls, bbq pork slices, pork fried rice, sweet & sour chicken balls, jag doo wings, almond soo guy, Cantonese chow mien and beef tenderloin with onions/black pepper.

The Good:
- Sweet & sour chicken balls were a good size with lots of chicken.
- Pork fried rice was tasty
- Cantonese chow mien was very good
- Almond soo guy was excellent. Really nice thin batter.

The Bad:
-Egg rolls were over cooked, almost burnt
- Spring rolls were huge. Probably good for some people but my wife prefers smaller spring rolls
- Beef tenderloin wasn't as tender as other places. Doubt it was actually made with tenderloin.

The Ugly:
- Bbq pork slices were most disgusting. So much fat in the slices, couldn't eat more than a few after dissecting them. Weird thing is that the Cantonese chow mien has pork slices and they were fat free.
- I didn't have any if the wings but my wife said they gave her a stomach ache.

The Uglier:
Put all the leftovers in the fridge overnight. When we decided what to keep and what to toss this morning, I found the foam container of BBQ pork slices was now half filled with congealed fat/oils from the pork.

WH-H-ELL!. Well I guess the person who dumped on these guys 03/13/12 has just parachuted into the West GTA from Spadina Avenue, and is not familiar with the state of Chinese cuisine found outside of districts that exist to serve mostly first-gen Chinese immigrants. While the food at Gold City can be described as being of the kind most often found in areas not dominated by Chinese first-gen immigrants, it is the best Chinese food in Milton. If the critic wants to find REALLY offensive Chinese food in the ex-burbs, there are franchised joints around that would make his/her head spin! So go to Gold City, and enjoy. They are very nice people who do not deserve this kind of criticism.

DISGRACE TO CHINESE FOOD & CULTURE. I'm new to Milton having lived downtown Toronto all my life, and I'm Chinese as well, so I would say by virtue of culture, I have a fairly decent handle on Chinese food.

Gold City is a little hole in the wall... and these are usually the best Chinese food places - run by families. But not this place. Food was far from authentic. And when I ordered a very typical rice noodle dish, the girl taking my order went on to tell me I had to pay additional for bean sprouts! WTF?! A noodle dish that calls for bean sprouts in the recipe.... you're going to charge me?!!! I laughed... and actually told her, you know as well as I do the receipt calls for it. She laughed back and said, this isn't Toronto, and these people pay so why shouldn't you!?

So I guess she figures Miltonian's are uncultured enough that she can get away with it.

So on behalf of the Chinese community, I sincerely apologize for these FAKES not only serving you horrible non-authentic Chinese food... but also over charging you because they believe you don't know better!

I wouldn't dine there if the meal were free and the girl who insulted me and all the people of Milton served me on her hands and knees.

What a disgrace to my culture!!!

HORRIBLE!!!!!. Hands down, worst asian food I have ever eaten, even Manchuwok is better than this garbage, , and this is coming from an asian person. Ordered Chow Mein, noodles were pale and soggy, not yellow and crispy. Fried rice it looks like they just threw in some soy sauce and called it a day.

I don't know who is eating here, but people who are giving this place glowing reviews have obviously never eaten real chinese food before lol
