Review Gal's Sushi - Markham

Julie Li
Pretty solid spot for sushi and Korean food. It can be a little hard to find surface parking during prime lunch & dinner times but there's a (dimly lit) underground parking. Service is usually good. The quality is consistent and prices are very reasonable. The Spicy Scallop roll is a must! It has great flavour and texture.

This place was amazing. Ordered only 2 special rolls and was very filling. Size of the sushi were fairly big pieces and makes it worth the price. The fish tasted so fresh, all you can eat sushi places are great but this definitely does not compare! The staff were very nice and approachable. We also had free appetizers like salad and potatoes, and tried sashimi of sea urchin. Such great flavours , definitely worth a visit!

One of my family's fave places to get Japanese and Korean food. We've been going here for probably almost 10 years and we still consider it when we decide we want sushi for dinner. I remember one time we were eating, a server came by and gave us the Cloud Roll for free because they were testing it out in the kitchen and wanted us to try (it was amazing; I highly recommend it still). The only thing I miss is that they used to offer complimentary desserts, such as red bean jelly or cut oranges. We used to eat in but since the pandemic we've just been getting take out. Even the take out is high quality and their sushi/sashimi platters are beautifully arranged. We've never had a bad experience and the food is always delicious.

Always amazing food and service. One of the few sushi joints that open relatively late. Lots of delivery app options. 5% cash discount. Full bar. Underground parking also available.

No matter how many bad reviews this place gets, it will continue to be packed with customers; but I have had too many intolerable and annoying experiences with this place that it has accumulated up to a point where I am writing this review. Service: mediocre at best, the staff don’t have an attitude but are not nice and courteous either. When it gets busy, they are extremely ignorant. One time I called to place an order, I didn’t even finish my order yet and the waitress just gave me a number and hung up… like seriously? The only thing good about this place is that they are very lenient on substitutions. If you wanted to change all your sashimi to salmon sashimi in your bento, you can do that for an up charge. Food: I thought I was the only one who got extremely bloated from eating here, but after I came here with friends, it wasn’t just me. I don’t know what they add to their sushi that made my friends and I this way (we only ordered sushi and rolls) but also I don’t want to accuse them of using MSG as I don’t have clear cut evidence. The only thing that has kept me coming here in the past is their spicy salmon rolls and their combination platters which were tasty but I just kept getting so thirsty after eating it. Also, the rolls and the sushi have gotten smaller ever since COVID-19, before they were small but now they’re even smaller. Overall, I wouldn’t go back again after discovering new sushi places. The quality of fish they use is mediocre and the portions have gotten smaller. However, the lunch boxes are not bad since they are pretty inexpensive. Also, parking is a pain in this area.

Gal’s has been around for a long time and is a classic markham establishment for sushi. They have been around for awhile and for good reason, they always satisfy the sushi cravings and are always consistent with the taste and quality. Service was good and never any issues whenever I have gone and good service goes a long way. Definitely recommend going to them! The parking lot can get quite full fast, and where the restaurant is located, with a full parking lot, it could be best to go along if you’re doing takeout. Great job overall! Follow me on IG @thirst_and_taste for better pics and more amazing content!

I came here for the first time on a Friday night to pick up takeout. I decided to go with the following: T1 4 rolls (24pc) 2 spicy salmon rolls 1 yam roll ( sub for the crab roll $1 extra ) 1 dynamite roll plus 3 yam rolls for my sister as well as some spicy mayo. My bill was about $53, since I was paying cash, I got a 10% off discount. Overall, I really like the quality of food here, it tastes so fresh and delicious! The service was also really great! I met the owner charlie who was so friendly and funny. If I'm in Markham again, I think I'll definitely be back!

No better sushi in Ontario. The sashimi is so fresh! Everything is amazing and clean, the staff is friendly. Highly recommend. Great prices too!

Delicious sushi, delightful and freshly made. The service is quick and prompt, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the hygiene is optimal too.

THIS PLACE Gals Sushi & ITS PARTNER IN Thornhill serve LIVE Octopus and Flounder ! Along with Marado Sushi Restaurant ! This is against the Law and these restaurants have been warned by the Government to stop this practice ! They are not listening and continue on serving , an Octopus is a very intelligent and sensitive creature , it feels EVERY Knife Hack that is inflicted on it , just because it does not cry out in Pain , it is very much feeling that Pain , as does the Flounder they serve Live ! If you condone this cruelty you are breaking the Law as well as being an Animal Abuser ! Please Boycott these Restaurants until they stop this horrendous cruel practice ! Thank You !!

The male waiter provided extremely poor customer service during my last dinner at the Gal's sushi on Highway 7 in Markham. This male waiter usually works at the cashier and was extremely rude. He provided very bad customer service. His behaviour is unacceptable. It was a very frustrating and upsetting experience.

Cheapest lunch sushi meals! If you want VERY affordable, low quality, sushi, then Gal's Sushi will fit the bill. It's very busy at lunch because of the nearby offices during the week, but it might be worth the wait and slow service for the ridiculously low prices. The decor is relatively nice and it's a large restaurant. You can call ahead to make reservations. But note that service will be very slow, inaccurate, and full of poor attitude as well.
Korean Food Monster
The food here is always fresh and always packed. It is run by koreans which is a bonus and the food is always consistent. Besides their sushi platters, their yaki udon is really delicious!! And you can ask them to make it spicy! Their korean food is decent, we order the kangpunki (sweet and spicy pork) and it's pretty good. They give 10% off take out orders if you use cash. One of the things I really like about this place is that they give you a wide variety of fish with their sushi trays compared to other places and their menu has pictures of every dish so you know what to expect!

Horrible experience. I was craving something and it just ruined my night when I did not get it.

Ordered rolls with the rest of our dinner. Our food arrived, but no rolls. Waited for 20 mins to ask about them and was told "Sorry, I forgot to order them"... fine... mistakes happen. Was told they would be right out. 15 mins later, we asked again if they were ready. Was then told "Sorry, they were not ordered". The waitress then offered to order them now and get them to go for us. What kind of solution is that? I don't know about you, but I like to eat all of my dinner at once.

Will never be going back.

Food is good and service is quick. The staffs are not always the friendliest but never rude. Food presentation is always nicely done. The lunch special is a great deal. Been here many times and will continue to come. Thanks Gal's sushi! Great establishment! Keep it going!

I get take-out from Gal's all the time, typically to bring back to the office for lunch with colleagues. The sushi is decently priced, and you do get the quality you pay for. We usually get an assorted sushi platter to share, and then tempura and seaweed salad on the side. The crab salad roll is really yummy and is usually one of the first ones to disappear from our platter. It usually takes them ~40 min to put our order together.

I have been going to Gal's since they opened, and the quality, service, and food still has not changed. The servers are really attentive and you are able to press the bell when you require help. When you come in the staff greet you. The restaurant is always pretty busy. During the weekend it's packed. Night time is packed. Lunch time is also packed. Lunch time is the only time I've ever seen a line out the door though.
The best deal is the lunch bento box. It comes with a ton of food. I always order the bulgogi sushi bento. A standard box comes with bulgogi, rice, six rolls (two california, two spicy salmon, two deep fried yam or crab rolls), assorted sushi, and either potatoes or jap chae. For ~$12 you can't go wrong.
Dinner is a bit pricier ~$20, but you get a lot of food. The standard miso and salad, then all the appetizers, then your box with sashimi if you want, sushi, and rolls. I've never left this place hungry.
The sushi always tastes fresh and I find the quality to be good compared to other places I have gone to in Markham.
I would definitely recommend this place for lunch/dinner with friends.

If you want amazing sushi then this is NOT the place to go! I've been here mistakenly 3 times hoping it would improve...nope and nope. Warm sashimi, dirty plates and cups, and bad service. All the things you wished for in a restaurant are not here. There are much better places for sushi in Markham. Trust me!
Rebeccafeng.blue
Mediocre. Slow service, almost none. Over priced.
Karen Ng
Horrible service, but great food.. Came here for the lunch special (L4 is the best bang for your buck). It comes with 6 maki rolls (3 different kinds, 2 pieces each), 4 assorted sushi pieces, 7-8 assorted pieces of sashimi, rice, glass noodles, salad and miso soup. All that for only $8.99! The sushi consistently tastes great here, but another thing that is also consistent is the horrible service.

Poor Service!!!. I went there for lunch today with my daughter and sister. We ordered Shrimp Tempura appetizer, A2. Assorted Sushi, and an Avocado Roll. The server was quick to drop off tea, soup, free noodle app, and free sweet potato app. Shortly afterwards, she brought over the dip for the Shrimp Tempura appetizer. About 15-20 minutes later, she brought the Assorted Sushi and the Avocado Roll, but no Shrimp Tempura. After finishing the rolls and sitting around for a chat, we looked at the time and realized we had to go for our appointment, but still no Shrimp Tempura. I asked the server for the bill and she was quick to point out that our Shrimp Tempura has not arrived. I told her we had to go because we had an appointment. She insisted that I take it with me but since it's deep-fried, it would be soft and soggy once it cools. I asked her to cancel it for that reason. She said she'll go and check. Within seconds, she came back with the Shrimp Tempura appetizer!!! upon dropping it off, she said, "They made it already." I went on telling her that I have to go because I have an appointment. She insisted I take it with me and I had to explain to her again why I don't want it. She repeated, "They made it already." She should've told me that it would take over half an hour to deep-fry less than 10 pieces of veggies and shrimp. If I knew that the Shrimp Tempura appetizer was suppose to come at the end of my meal, like a dessert, I wouldn't have ordered it. In terms of food, it tasted good. However, I'm the type of person who cares more about the service and the experience. There are plenty of sushi restaurants along Hwy 7 and I'm sure they're comparable for food. However, not everyone can provide good service and good experience. Depending on location, I feel that I get better service from McDonald's than Gal's Sushi and there's no need to tip at McDonald's. For that reason, I will not be returning.

The food is good but the service is terrible. I went to Gal's Sushi for the first time to get a take out dinner. The sushi combo was good but the server, Charlie, was incredibly rude. While looking through the menu, I asked him what type of rolls were included in one of the dinner specials. The picture of the combo was small and there was no description. He laughed at me and said, "What do you think?" He then pointed at the individual rolls and tried to give me a "pop quiz" on sushi. I went to Gal's Sushi to quickly pick up my dinner, not to be mocked by an idiot server. I'm definitely not coming back to this restaurant.

New Mgr Killing Service. Used to be my favorite sushi resto in the GTA. I was a regular customer for 2 years. Now with the new mgr I'm treated like someone who's never been there before. Food is still v.good, but new Mgr is WAY less than adequate. Previous guy was amazing... No request was too difficult... He was polite, super quick, and made you feel special. This guy is the complete opposite. Too bad, used to be a nice place. Hope this isn't the beginning of the end for Gals...
Kittenie
On the decline. I used to like this place. My most recent visit has left me not wanting to come back anymore. The food is ok, service was terrible. The server even had the audacity of not giving any change back as she automatically assumed I was going to leave her more than 20% tip.

They have good lunch special deals. The food is pretty good. Not super authentic but I still enjoy my food every time I go here.

DISAPPOINTED. Gal's used to be a go-to place for friends and I, whether for sushi or Korean food. Quality was always consistent. Tonight, on Mother's day of all days, was a HUGE disappointment.

Ordered the Dinner bento box with sashimi, rolls and bulgogi for $16.99, and another box with Tempura. Bulgogi was full of tough tendons, Tempura Shrimp was not de-veined, Tempura bits in the sushi rolls were stale and hard, and the worst part is, ALL the Salmon sashimi had the dark part of the flesh plus the skin attached. They plated it face down as if we wouldn't notice.

I like salmon sashimi but has always found the dark flesh and skin too chewy and fishy. Specifically asked the server if the salmon has skin and she insisted no. Imagine our disappointment when our sashimi arrived.

Another person at the table ordered Steak teriyaki also for 16.99. It's just a piece of steak with a side of rice. The steak was very chewy (even though at medium rare) and fibrous.

Though flavours are still good, the quality of the ingredients was a huge DISAPPOINTMENT. Will not return.

Simply the best.. This is the first restaurant review that I have ever written. That is how good Gal's Sushi is. The special rolls are creative and presented impeccably. The fish is consistently fresh. And the wait staff is kind and attentive. I can without a doubt say that Gal's is the best (and most consistent) sushi around. It is worth the slightly higher prices. If you're on the fence, try it -- it will quickly become one of your favorite restaurants.

First time. Wasn't expecting much so was a bit surprised. Ordered sashimi and a fried appetizer. Service was prompt and decor was nice. Price was ok. Place was busy. Would try again. 70%

If you're looking for an authentic sushi experience, this is it! We decided I try it out because of the great ratings and reviews and we're sure glad we did! The atmosphere and decor was great, very cozy and inviting. It was fully staffed and everyone was really friendly. We ordered Gals platter which consisted of a mix of sushi, sashimi and rolls. We also ordered a side of vegetable tempura (cuz I can't go without it). Starters were delivered shortly after we ordered: miso soup, salad, cold noodle salad and potatoes in a sweet sauce. Great soup! The tempura was perfect and we absolutely do not have any complaints about our platter! Everything was so fresh and delicious! From the sashimi to the sushi down to the pickled ginger. At other sushi restaurants, sushi and rolls are filled with rice but Gals had the perfect amount to ensure every bite was perfectly balanced. The sashimi wasn't fishy or slimey it was as fresh as you can get. The only roll we didn't like was the one with uni (but that comes down to personal preference I think, it was a bit too strong of a flavour for us). It's a busy restaurant for takeout, at one point there was a lineup of cars outside from people coming in to pick up their orders. There was a lineup to be seated at around 6:30p so if you don't want to wait, get there early! The prices are great and as long as you don't mind ordering their variety platters, the cost is great (ours came to basically $1 per piece of sushi/sashimi) which is much cheaper than any other sushi restaurant I've been to! Definitely a new favourite!!

Always Busy During Lunch Time. I love coming back here for the sushi bento boxes and the side dishes that accompanies the bulgogi. However, this place is always packed during lunch hours, so you will have to wait a short while before you can get a table.

Sushi is not particularly good nor bad, but the size of the dishes will certainly make you extremely full! I always need to takeout my leftovers since I can never finish it!
Katrina
Found a better place. I used to come here a lot with my friends until we discovered Sushi Sushi. Comparing the two, Gal Sushi is overpriced and you often have to wait for a spot. They aren't as generous with the sushi eggs and ice cream only comes with one scoop (Sushi Sushi gives you two!). Not my go-to place anymore
Alice
Decent not great- will not return. Main reason I came here was or their Japanese food. The sushi was mediocre/average. It's very obvious this is not ran by Japanese people and the food is not authentic. The table service was ran in a korean-style with call bells and rushed environment with little attention to customers. The seats were uncomfortable and the surrounding environment was loud like a Chinese dim sum restaurant loud. In terms of unique food I did enjoy their special rolls menu as they were quite unique. In terms of food display I can't give it any points as it was not very creative. I prefer Hana Bi Sushi restaurant that is also in the area.

I love it ! Best restaurant for some drop in sushi !!

Party of 3. Loved the food! Been here multiple times. Tried the mentor, pork bone soup, and a couple others.

I absolutely love this!! No other place makes it and I always always order this every time I go!!!

Pretty good. Been here for take-out a couple of times and was never disappointed. You'll get 10% off your bill if you pay in cash (in house or take-out). Take-out was ready in 15 minutes! Shrimp tempura was pretty good. I've never been here to eat-in, but I'm still a loyal customer to Hana Bi at First Markham Place.

Funny how everytime ive been to this restaurant its always with my gal pals :p but we certainly enjoy food and service. Plus im a huge germaphobic and attention to tidiness as well so this place is quite maintained. Its not all-you-can-eat but a lot of selections to choose from their menu. There is not a lot of parking space esp on the weekends so would require some wait time. And not like you can park anywhere else since thats the only parking lot close to the restaurant.
Perfect_man
I feel is not what it was. They used to be much better before they moved to this location. It's just not the same anymore. For sushi try many other places. For rolls or bento tempura they still do a good job and lunch prices are respectable. For Ramen just drive to Jyuban.

Great food + Service. Came here for the first time with Bf, got the lobster salad sushi and boyy was it amazing! Service was excellent too (even though we came in at 10pm..hr before closing)

10/10 tummy points!

USED...to be great. First time I went was couple years ago and the food was great, everything was fresh and the quantity they served was usually more than enough.
After a few years, i went back again..wow the quality downgraded so much..the soup that were served in bowls were half full...the sushi was mediocre...
I was very disappointed.

FRESH. Fresh sushi straight from Japan. The most fantastic and authentic sushi for sushi monsters. I have taken at least 2 girls here and they have both been very very impressed if ya know what I mean. The waitress looks like SoNyeoSiDae. $40 for 2 for dinner.

Used to be good. I used to love going to Gal's sushi. Their lunch specials are resonably priced, including their a la cart items. However, I've found that in the past year or so, the quality and quantity is just not the same as it use to be. I understand that the restaurant is a lot more popular now than it was before, but still, no escuse. I would still go to Gal sushi now, but only just for convenience.
Alison
Was great before, now not good. Been to Gal Sushi numerous times as it is located close to my office. It used to be really good, really fresh. You could tell from the line up during both lunch (all 7 days) and dinner (weekend). Now, it has gone worse. The sushi and sashimi are not that good anymore. And you could tell from the shorten line up during weekend and non-existing line up during weekday lunch now. :P

So whoever is writing blog to promote it, the line up does not lie.

Go-to place. Gal's has been my go-to place whenever I'm feeling like sushi. It's the ONLY place uptown where I find myself coming back repeatedly for its quality and service.

I never have Korean food here so I can't vouch for it...
Jojochiu
Good. The quality of the food is considerably good and fresh..the prices are reasonable but sometimes when it gets busy, the service is kinda slow but thats ok at least they don't forget about us at the end. I'd always go back.
XcanadaSUSHI
Gals is decent. Have eaten here many times... never disappointed in food/ quality of food.... service is sometimes slow when it gets real busy, but that's the norm anywhere you go

ambiance feels really nice !

although sashimi is sometimes cut to thick! also wished they used real crab meat in their menu items.

one time me and my partner went we ordered a roll, it arrived at our table, before we could even dig in the waiter came, looked at the roll, said there was something missing, took it away, came back with newly made rolls with the "missing ingredient" i was so impressed because a lot of places would have let it slide rather than wasting rolls.

It's been a while since i've gone but i remember their tempura UDON noodles being very tasteful with a nice texture on the noodles. perhaps if you never went, I highly recommend the bulgogi box (you get to sample a bit of everything)

PHOTOS WILL BE TAKEN NEXT TIME I GO BACK TO TORONTO
Unagi
Korean fare good. sushi used to be good. It seems the dine in fares are better than take out.
Staff/service not so good.
Nelson Lau
Used to be good, but the portions have been reduced significantly (by slicing fish thinner) and the quality of the sashimi is not as good. Instead, try Kaori near Highway 7 and Yonge St in Richmond Hill for its specialty rolls.
Isabel
Great lunch specials. Went for lunch today at Gal's. The lunch special sushi and sashimi boxes are really cheap and come with lots of variety (mine had sushi, sashimi, three kinds of rolls, jap chae, and rice), and came with salad and soup. Was pretty tasty other than one type of fish being overly fishy. It was pretty packed at 12:30, so service was a bit rushed.
Sara Watson
Gal sushi has the best lunch specials ever!
Kal
Fresh fish, very clean place, great ambiance ... It's pricey but you will definately get what you pay for

Gal’s Sushi is another family favourite restaurant that serves both Korean and Japanese food at reasonable prices. I am a big uni (sea urchin) fan and know that I can get my fix here. They have an awesome special running right now where you can get 2 uni’s for $5.99.
The place is always buzzin’ and busy, even with reservations. The space has many long tables which are great for families and large parties. Having been to the restaurant since this location opened years ago, I have tried countless number of dishes. I prefer the Japanese food over the Korean dishes here. Although each table is given a serving of glazed honey potatoes and glass noodles (japchae) on the house, the restaurant only provides a dish of kimchi if you order Korean food. Sometimes, they don’t bring the kimchi unless you ask them. The pork bone soup broth does not have a strong developed flavour which I assume the bones need more time to simmer in the broth.

One of the things I like about Gal’s is that their sushi rolls are consistently good and tasty. Like Jessica mentioned, their sushi standard is good enough to be delicious but it’s not superior sushi either.
Katcanrawr
Overall, don't eat Korean food here - go one block West and there's a Nak Won conveniently located in FMP. Better food for a lower price. If you want sushi, I would much rather save up and go to Cafe Michi's or Zen's. There's no reason why I would want to go back here again.

Got the Gal’s Special roll – shrimp, salmon, avocado, fish roe & philadelphia cheese wrapped with soybean paper and topped with potato bits. Honestly when I saw that it looked like it was wrapped with a lettuce like thing I was not loving it, but it actually tastes really good. It’s savoury from all the ingredients like cheese and avocado yet still really fresh tasting. Definitely try this one out if you want to try one of their special rolls.
Peachgirl
Gal's Sushi is a Korean and Japanese restaurant located at Warden and Highway 7 and of the food I tried, I thought they did Korean food better than Japanese. The prices were reasonable and the service was fast.
Mary
I have never been disappointed. Each time they have served consistently fresh fish, great service, and attention to presentation. Definitely a go-to place for me!
Manley H
This is my delicious Roll Box and I thought it was so tasty. The ingredients seemed fresh and had a good rice-to-fish ratio. I know japchae and potatoes are probably the most popular side dishes of all time but to have them again in the bento box seems a little repetitive.

Nelson @ Markham: Judging from the lineups this place is really popular, so we opted for takeout. This tray include sushi and rolls with a great variety because it included octopus, shrimp in addition to the regular fish, clam, eels. Some pieces of salmon had skin and there were the pieces of yellow egg that I had only seen previously in Taiwan. Even the rolls were interesting with lettuce, red roe, cheese, mayo all contributing as ingredients here and there. But perhaps the most interesting thing is the yellow roe wrapped in some seafood container. It was similar to the pieces next to it, but the outside was chewier. Never seen that before. The fish was fresh, everything was well prepared and they had a welcome creative twist so I would definitely come back here. My parents brought back some Turkish Delight (Smyrna brand) from Turkey. I always wanted to try it considering it was so heavily featured in the Narnia books. But it turns out that it isn't amazing or anything, but still

Another quick-order sushi joint loacted in York Region, except I found the ambiance a bit better, with nice furnishings and a modern vibe. Not the cheapest prices, but for what you get its worth it.

Dining in is slightly noisy, depending on the hour of the day, however the dining area is very large and can accommodate many patrons.

I typically order sushi platters; they go the extra distance by having Uni (sea urchin), which is sort of a step-up from other similar establishments.

When my criteria is a) I want sushi and b)I'm in York Region, I go here.

Their menu is well organized and has tons of pictures which makes it easy to navigate through.

My recommendation for the best items to order based on value and taste are:

1. The takoyaki balls- For $4.99, this is a great deal for the delicious Octopus filled balls. At Kenzo Ramen, I recall they were $8 for the dish.

2. The 72 piece “SIL platter” platter ($69.99) which is great for 3 to 4 adults to share and it comes with a variety of specialty sashimi and sushi including hamachi, amaebi (sweet shrimp), spicy scallops and my favourite…uni.

3. The best deal is the bento box which comes with a choice of bulgogi, chicken or salmon teriyaki, or shrimp tempura with a combination of maki rolls, sashimi and or sushi. The box is only $16.99 before tax and the portions are generous.

As for the service, you can expect to flag your server down multiple times during their peak times, even with a bell at most tables to call the server. With the long line ups at times, the hostess are normally quick to get customers seated.

Overall:

With the extensive menu, you will be sure to find delicious eats at Gal’s Sushi. The Japanese fare is what keeps me going back to the restaurant. The specialty sushi and sashimi consistently tastes fresh and delicious. Happy eating and remember to make reservations! The restaurant also does take out.
