Review Merla-mae Ice Cream - London

My family has been getting our ice cream cakes from here for decades. I still have very fond memories of a particular Winnie the Pooh one for my 8th birthday.. it was spectacular! Best ice cream cakes in town (highly recommended the skor flavour).

Very cute restaurant. I love that it's open year-round. Huge selection of ice cream treats (almost overwhelming!). My sundae was good but, at over $8 for a small, maybe a bit too pricey to go here super regularly

Went here on a date on Tuesday. I had the Sundae with Hot Fudge and Crunch pieces (7.8/10) and my date had a mint ice cream cone. I'd come back and try the other sundaes. The Crunch had a little too much of the Crunch pieces. Would like to try the Cadbury one with hot fudge or the turtle one.

Ice cream is a treat, you may want to give yourself a little bit of extra time to chose what you want to enjoy. I had hot fudge sundae and it was good not too sweet or syrupy and just the right amount of ice cream. My partner had the strawberry yogurt parfait and he said it was very good and worth the price. Plenty of places to sit and good tunes are played. Colourful ambiance in the eating area. Sometimes they have outdoor entertainment. All in all a good place to treat yourself to dessert.

It's like a walk back in time, the signage, the jukebox, the garage door...all brings a cool vibe during your visit. First time experiencing Merla Mae's, we really enjoyed it. We got there just in time as the line up built up significantly behind us-definitely a population spot with the locals! The variety is really good, so much on the menu to give you the hints you need to pick the right one for your tastebuds! The quality of our orders were good, even if the pricing was a bit steep. It is a great locale to try and enjoy with your date or your family! A super treat on a 'Sundae' afternoon!

Great staff and customer service, also dog friendly which is amazing. They have picnic tables to sit at. I got the Shaggy Dog sundae, which was okay but not worth it for the price: $10 for soft serve vanilla topped with whipped cream, caramel syrup, and shredded coconut? Better off just getting the cones!

Best ice cream place in the galaxy. It's like stepping back in time for great ice cream, at a great 50's ice cream place. Marla-Mae Ice cream has bean around since 1951. The place still has it's 50's vibe. With it's unique exterior, and interior design. They have a huge menu selection, with an ice cream flavor for everyone. The employees are friendly. The service is awesome. The place has a fun atmosphere, with music playing, and an outdoor patio. I highly recommend Marla-Mae Icel Cream.

We had a wonderful time on Sunday at Merla Mae's parking lot concert. The band Screeched Inn was a lot of fun. Of course the ice cream is always amazing. I have been enjoying ice cream from the Merla Mae since 1986 and it has never disappointed.

Love the variety of flavours and types of ice cream. You can choose anywhere from a simple cone, sundaes to cookie sandwiches. The prices are fair and the place is super cute!

This ice cream was amazing!! Cookies & cream and cherry cheesecake 10/10

Fantastic ice cream and a ton of choices! I'm pretty sure you could get something new every time and never run out! I'm loving just exploring all the sundae options, but there's a ton of soft serve dips and milkshakes I need to try too! I'll be back every time I'm in London.

Stopped by for some evening ice cream. Patio was clean despite the traffic of people! Ordered a scoop of strawberry which tasted delicious - classic old school tasting ice cream. There's a surprising variety of flavours and desserts tucked into this little venue, ranging from milkshakes to banana splits to yogurt berry cups. I was told that very little about the establishment has changed since it's opening, which is very apparent as you approach the store. Lots to admire while you wait in line (this is one of the few places worth lining up for during reopening!). Nothing beats supporting a local business and an ice cream on a hot day!

A bit pricey as other reviews say, but amazing customer service and so happy with the cake ordered for my friend's birthday! Love the base ice cream variety! Would have liked a little more crunch layer and the coloured border icing flavour isn't too special, but I'll just be sure to get the chocolate border next time!

Just like I remember. From years ago. still excellent. I understand the prices need to go up, but some items were expensive, compared to a tub of ice-cream at the grocery store.

I’m blow away but all the great reviews, honestly it’s crazy. This is not ice cream, their soft serve is something that tastes like frozen whipped cream. On top of that my turtle parfait was almost $12!!!!!!!! And it most certainly did not taste like real ice cream. Again, shocked people rave about this place, worst ice cream ever and a steep price tag on top of if.

Stopped by last week for a late night treat and we were not disappointed! Got a fools gold and decadent chocolate sundae - both recommended to us by staff. Each sundae was delicious! The atmosphere of the restaurant is a fun retro vibe and they had the garage door open in the warm weather. Only drawback is make sure you have time as you could end up waiting awhile for your ice cream- but very much worth the wait! As well, prices are just a tad high- we paid $16 for the two sundaes.

It's like stepping back into another time. With the 50s feel and a huge menu, Merla Mae is a delightful ice cream shop. Everything I've tried on the menu is delicious and I still have so many items to try. I always look forward to going to Merla Mae!

Great treat for once in a while. What can I say that others haven't ? Expensive but superb selection, just something for the rare occasion it's hot enough to deserve ice cream. I go infrequently, maybe a couple times in the summer throughout the year.
Fine Diner
Dropped by last week to satisfy an ice cream craving and ordered the strawberry sundae and half and half soft ice cream cone. Both were tasty and appreciated as a winter treat.
This shop started out over 30 years ago as a small concrete block structure serving cones and has progressed to the neat ice cream diner that is open all year round. Still not the best ice cream place in the city. That honour belongs to the London Ice Cream Company on Baseline and Wharncliffe.

If they dropped the prices about 20% it would be a 5/5. If you're coming here to eat with a family of 4 then expect to pay $20-40. The iced cream and selection are phenomenal. The service is good.
Rebecca
You can dip and roll.

On line chef. Amazing icecream parlour! My friends and I go every few weeks even through the winter. I've alnost tried everything you can imagine . I work in the food industry and I know when restaurants are clean and food is up to par, well Merla Mae is right up my alley. Fantastic place, friendly service. The employees are super sweet and very good looking. They definitely know how to please. Best icecream in the city of London, that's for sure!!!

Awful Oreo Cream Shake Flurry. I had an Oreo Cream Shake Flurry and it had a very awful flavour to it. The cookies seemed fine, but something was wrong with the ice cream. The ice cream had a very strange taste. I don't think the ice cream was rotten, but I suspect my flurry was mixed using a machine that was just used to mix another flavour of ice cream. I thought I detected the taste of licorice, but I can't be sure. I had to throw out the ice cream, and this is coming from a person who will eat almost anything. My wife had a scoop of ice cream that she said was ok, but her first two flavour choices were sold out. My flurry was priced well, but my wife's single-scoop sugar cone ice cream was around $4.50; that's a bit steep in my opinion. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this establishment.

Horrible. Went here to get a sundae and took a photo of wife at order window for Instagram. In a panicked high voice the elderly woman at the counter aggressively told me that I had to delete the photo and that they have signs saying no pictures. I guess they think their signage is something so amazing and unique that everyone wants to copy them (yeah right). They happen to have many signs for their menus so forgive me if I missed the no photo one. Needless to say we didn't order. The place was already dead with no customers so you think they'd be happy to see us. In an age of social media this reaction is completely mind blowing. They lost a life long customer and everyone gets to read why.

Poor customer service and ridiculously stingy.... They only give you one napkin per order and when we asked for extra napkins (eating ice cream could get quite sticky and messy obviously) they gave us another 4 napkins... I also asked for 8 cups of water on our $54 order she said she'd have to charge us at least $0.50 for the cups. Now 50 cents is nothing when your order is about 55 bucks, but considering the cups cost them a meagre 2 cents (Costco sells 1000 pack styrofoam cups for 20.79), you can see how ridiculous her request was. Actually ended up buying bottles of water from the adjacent Mr Sub. It wasn't about the money... It was about customer service and lack thereof!

Overpriced. Bad customer service. My rum and butter ice cream didn't stand up to its name.

Love it. A quaint little place off of Highbury, Merla Mae Ice Cream is one place I can consistently count on to supply me with excellent soft serve ice cream.

I ordered the "Beam Me Up Scotty" (pictured). It's vanilla soft serve with Irish cream (think Bailey's), bananas, whipped cream, and a waffle wafer. The combination was great and it's definitely worth the try if you love Bailey's and bananas. My girlfriend purchased the half-and-half cone, which is solid if you're in the mood just for a basic cone. I'd recommend trying out one of their many sundaes, which can be quite extravagant. My personal favourites, besides this one, are the NY Cheesecake and Avalanche (my go-to).

The ice cream is fantastic. Since it's soft serve, it kind of reminds me of a denser whipped cream. It's rich, soft, and has a fantastic mouth feel. I much prefer softer ice cream, so I am partial to what is served here.

Great service! After the ni.... Great service!
After the nightmare of dealing with Dairy Queen and horrendous customer service, Merla Mae went above and beyond getting a cake done for my daughters birthday! Awesome, will never go back to dq again

I'm not a soft ice cream fan and I love Merla Mae! It's an institution. Loved the hot fudge sundae with malt powder. Strawberry sundae tastes fresh all winter long.

Soft serve ice cream. I love the soft serve ice cream, reminds one of an old 50's drive-in style. Bit pricey but good quality.
