Review Sakata Bar & Grill - London

The Crispy Spicy Salmon Roll here is an absolute revelation. As is their Spicy Ramen, which I've enjoyed more times than I care to admit. After living here for 12 years I can confidently say that this is my favorite restaurant in London Ontario.

The food was absolutely delicious. It's a small place so we had to wait about half an hour for a table but it was worth it.

Disgusting!!! The only thing that was "okay" was their pork ramen. I ordered delivery. From Just eat. I've eaten there before. It was not this bad!! Holy jumping everything we ordered, we spit out. It smelt bad too. Trying to give it another try was the worst! Also they over price. 6 different sushi (6 piece each for three of the orders). We love love sushi, I was sad we spent so much for something that wasn't worth the money by far!!! Just horried!!!😝 very disappointed. I will make sure all my friends & family know!

Unfortunately I no longer enjoy this restaurant. I'm going to say this was the worst experience I've had at any restaurant. Two groups of people arrived after us. One was served all of their food before we even got our appetizers. The other group was being served before our most simplest dish arrived. And by simplest I mean it was a California roll. The water I was served smelt like lemon and fish. She not once asked if we needed anything or if we were enjoying our food. Which I would have told her, no, we weren't. Just to sum it up: I couldn't finish eating. The rest of the food was for my boyfriend to take home and we were given half of the food we had left in our bowls. We went in smiling and ready for a great meal. We came out unhappy and unsatisfied. I'll give the benefit of the doubt and say the other location has higher standards. Will not return to this location.

I come here pretty often when I'm in London as I like the food here. Foodwise - Very good. Some of the sushi has a strong fishy smell, even for me, but they are still enjoyable. The ramen and udon are really good too! Service - It's ok. A few times, I've gone here, the service wasn't that great. When we didn't tip (because of the poor service), they said we should tip.... The food makes up for it.

Little gem in the middle of chaotic downtown. Lots of options to try out especially ramens and curry rice. Haven’t tried the sushi so I wont comment on that. We are always greeted and served in a timely manner. They close later than most restaurants so that’s another bonus points. Parking is free on the side street where Chil (frozen yogurt) is. 10/10 must try when you’re in downtown London!

Been here twice in the past month. Food is very fresh and unique. They have ipads for ordering and service take out orders. They don't take reservations and it is very small. They have a couple tables outside on the patio also. The octopus is delicious, salmon sashimi is amazing and shrimp tempura is fabulous, I also really enjoy the salmon tartar.

Great ambience.
Good food.
Would recommend all those japanese food lovers to go here and try it out.
I ordered the tonkatsu ramen and the chicken gyoza , both were lip-smacking.

One of the few good places in London for somewhat authentic Asian food. Sakata offers everything from sushi, to ramen, and curry. Would definitely recommend the latter two as I've had them several times and never been disappointed.

First time I tasted black sesame seed ice cream and it was as close to the authentic Japanese flavour in Canada!
The sushi itself is fantastic itself. We had a good experience and didn't receive leftovers with a bland taste. Loved the presentation style as well.

I came here for dinner for a friend's birthday and it was good but not terribly great. I am a vegetarian so I would have liked to see a few more options in the ramen selection for vegetarians. I had the veggie platter which was pretty great value for money however.

The food is better than any other Japanese restaurants in London. Standard menu is fairly priced and nicely portioned. For the foodies you can ask the owner to provide you with a selection of the catch of the day that might not be on the menu or mentioned. Of course you might be paying a lot extra but it usually is worth it. Music sucks sometimes.

We had a really nice dinner here - the service was prompt and the food was delicious. We came for the ramen, but the sushi and Japanese cheesecake were definite highlights as well. Decently priced - would definitely recommend!

Came here on a Sunday night before returning to school. Initially, we had planned to go to Mongolian Grill, but as they didn't accept the Western One Card and we didn't feel paying the full price for stir-fried food, we moved here.
All of us ordered ramen (three original Tonkotsu, one miso Tonkotsu). The service was average, but the food was really good! My egg was quite disappointing, as it was cold and hardboiled; however, the broth, bamboo shoots, and noodles were very delicious! We left extraordinarily satisfied.

I've had rather polarizing experiences dining at Sakata Ramen and Sakata Bar & Grill.

The bar and grill location seems to have their shit together. I have been thrice, each time the food was good. In particular my last visit stands out as it was easily one of the best meals I've ever had at a restaurant. The oysters and clams were fresh and well dressed. The teppanyaki is always cooked to perfection, the sushi and sashimi, of which there is a rich variety, is fresh and well assembled. If you haven't tried the seared monkfish liver, it's a definite must. The takoyaki is always piping hot and perfectly cooked. Octopus with some bite but not too chewy.
The service was also great. Basically every experience I've had at the bar and grill location has been great.

Sakata Ramen, on the other hand, despite having an identical menu and being operated by the same people, is a different story. I've been twice. The first time I had tonkotsu miso ramen, which I had already tasted at the Bar & Grill location, and as expected it was quite good. Rich sticky broth, great chashu, well seasoned egg, the works. The one complaint I have about my first visit would be the service. A male server, whose name I do not know, decided it would be appropriate to loom in our periphery whilst he waited for us to order. This made the experience feel rushed and uncomfortable, as this server was ever present, twiddling his thumbs in quiet anticipation and watching us as we studied the menu. He warned us about our order, asserting that white people generally have difficulty with some of the toppings we had selected, In particular soft boiled eggs, which are sure to confound and disgust the average Caucasian. Even after our repeated insistence that we were familiar with and indeed enjoyed the hanjuku eggs, he elected to present them to us in a separate dish. (which I understand is now common practice at Sakata but at the time was presented to us as a sort of compromise)

I visited the establishment again this past Monday and had a different experience. Excited for a bowl of rich, flavourful broth, I was met with an obscene concoction that would be best described as salty water with butter. I hesitate even to use the term 'salty', as it was poorly seasoned. The noodles were not boiled in salted water, which I'm not sure is common practice where ramen is concerned, but would have helped compensate for the fact that they were suspended in a mostly flavourless liquid. The egg was perfectly cooked but poorly seasoned, the chashu was thankfully good as always. After eating the BBQ meat I promptly paid for my meal and left, disgusted, with most of my order untouched. The waiter loomed, ever vigilant...

I'm just very unsure now, I will definitely be avoiding the Queens & Richmond location in the future.

TL;DR:--Sakata Bar and Grill is awesome in every conceivable way. Sakata Ramen seems comparable but has a very annoying wait staff and jarringly inconsistent levels of quality. I hope someone from the restaurant reads this and talks to the servers about that looming business. Majorly unprofessional.

I'm sad to say that as an Asian I have never tried ramen until now, but this is some next level noodle soup. I ordered the spicy ramen (so hot and so delicious), the yam fries (basically seasoned sweet potato fries, they were really good) the pork belly skewers (OMG YOU HAVE TO ORDER THESE. They're worth the $5 and oh so juicy). I also tried a few of their sushi rolls, better than your average AYCE but not the best I've ever had. The service was also very diligent... Almost to the point when they were awkwardly interrupting conversation just to refill my water for the 5th time but better than not refilling it at all! Overall I would say that ramen from this place has made me a ramen lover for life and I will definitely be back to try their other noodle soups!

Great food, horrible personal relations.. Ordered here many times, food is great. Won't order again though, they brought the wrong food and literally told me to f*uck off when I said they should deliver the wrong food and I either wanted my money back or the correct food delivered

One of the best sushi and ramen places in London. My friend and I tried ramen here for the first time and loved it! Definitely a go to spot and will recommend this place to anybody!

RUDE Waiter at Sakata Bar & Grill on the corner of Queen and Clarence St.. This is a review on my experience of Sakata Bar & Grill located on the corner of Queen and Clarence St. It was my first time at this restaurant, as well as the first time I have ever ate Ramen in a restaurant. My sister, cousin and I arrive at the restaurant and are immediately greeted and seated in the middle of two groups of other customers. Our first impression of the waiter was good, as he asks if we had ever been there before and is knowledgeable and helpful explaining any questions we have about the menu and how to fill out the order sheet. We started off by asking if they had a drink menu and if they have beer available. The waiter explains that they do not have any as they don't currently have a licence to serve alcohol. No big deal, I order a soft drink and he brings over cups of water aswell. My cousin disappointed about alcohol not being served, decides to leave and go down the street for a pint. My sister and I stay however, as alcohol is not a deal breaker since we mainly just went in to grab a bite to eat and experience this new restaurant. We look through the menu and order some food. The food is quick to be served and was indeed good and tasty. Here is where everything starts to go down hill... While eating we notice that the waiter had been keeping an unusually sharp eye on us. He would constantly go up and down the isles and what looked like at times, stare at us and our bowls. At first we thought nothing of it as he was also waiting on other tables and could have possibly been mentally checking if we needed anything. (even though he never asked us if we needed anything) So we continued to eat and were finished within 10-15 minutes MAX. As soon as our plates were almost finished the waiter comes over and asked us if we wanted our bills. Aren't the customers supposed to ask for their bills when they're ready to leave?.. We found it a little strange that he asked us as there were people in front of us who we saw finish before us and he did not go up to them right away and ask them for their bills. So we again tried to think nothing of it and agreed to have the bills brought to us. The waiter then brought our bill with the debit machine in hand. I paid and chose not to tip as we had only been there for 15 minutes, and did not feel like the waiter deserved the tip because he had not been waiting on us for very long. I then continued my conversation with my sister. Literately 1 minute later the waiter comes back to our table (receipt in hand) and tells us that we did not tip, and continues to explain how they don't automatically include tips in their bills, basically asking why we didn't leave a tip. THAT IS VERY RUDE! A waiter should NEVER ask for a tip! Me and my sister looked at each other and then back at him with a very surprised look on our faces and replied with "okay, thanks for letting us know?" At that point we began to feel very uncomfortable and no longer wanted to sit there continuing our conversation. A minute later he came back and asked us if we were having any bad experience with service. (I thought to myself, 1st you stare at us like we're aliens from another planet, 2nd you try to rush us out of the restaurant when we're not ready to leave, and 3rd you bring back our bill and have the nerve to ask us why we didn't tip. WE'RE HAVE A HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE THANKS TO YOU BUDDY.) Although I was thinking that I replied "no every things okay." and he leaves our receipt on table and walks away.. We then put on our coats and leave feeling really uncomfortable. First and LAST time I go to this restaurant at this location. HOPE THE OWNER AND WAITER WHO SERVED US SEES THIS.

Can't Get Enough Of It!. Last night, my wife and myself went to Sakata with some friends. We had an urge for ramen and saw this place had some good reviews! SAKATA DOES NOT DISAPPOINT. For starters we tried the spider sushi roll. The flavors were spot on. The textures magnificent. I would have ordered more had I not been craving the covetous ramen bowl. My wife ordered the tonkatsu bowl, I ordered it spicy. What we got were big, hot, steamy, delicious bowls of genuine love! My bowl actually had a kick to it being spicy and all! We finished the night with some squid that was impeccably cooked. Seriously, I can't believe we even finished all this food as their servings sizes are quite liberal!
This is the place to go for Japanese cuisine!

Real ramen in London. Me and my boyfriend came here on a whim when we realized Kawa Sushi (our go-to place for real ramen) was closed due to it being a monday. It was pretty busy and they had the patio open. Which was pretty impressive, the wall opens for the patio, probably like a garage door. We both ordered tonkotsu ramen. I went upstairs to use the bathroom I was surprised to find a whole separate bar up there! Although the stairs were veery steep. (I can't help but think putting the bar up there would lead to a bunch of drunks falling down the steps.) Anyways! They've done a beautiful job decorating with the little space they have.
On to the food! My boyfriend got the regular tonkotsu, and I asked for mine without the black fungus (don't panic I know it sounds weird, but remember mushrooms are fungi too). It was delicious. Only $10 for a bowl bigger than your head. It's the usual price for ramen, but ramen is a big bang for your buck, especially if it's tasty. This was a pleasant surprise. The service wasn't especially quick, but it wasn't slow either. Seeing as they had only had one server, they handled the lunch rush very well.

This place is an amazing addition to London. We tried the ramen and some
Sushi, both were EXCELLENT. Super friendly staff and nice location. Food was so fresh and tasty, I'll definitely go back to try the other menu items. So happy to see more quality intl cuisine restaurants in London.

Only place left in London that serves tonkotsu ramen, so we tried it. EXCELLENT! Absolutely delicious, flavourful, and the broth was definitely homemade. The pork was melt-in-your-mouth tender and the seasoned eggs were delicious and slightly sweet. Service was impeccable--servers were polite, prompt, very friendly without being invasive. Even the cook said hello and goodbye to us!

I liked the ramen so much I ordered another to take home. I'm not a seafood person so I can't speak for their sushi quality, but the ramen was top notch.

Decor was lovely, too--very small place, but very pretty. Clean bathrooms. The music was romantic jazz at a nice, quiet volume.

No complaints. I'll be coming back soon!

The Ramen they have is the best in town but their sushi is really expensive. It's about 7$ for 2 pieces!

We had Toronto, Crispy Spicy Salmon and Philadelphia rolls. The food service was fast and our tea cups were refilled promptly too. The rolls were fresh and the server remembered we inquired about the spiciness of the dish. She came back and offered to remove the spicy ingredient from the roll. The avocado inside our rolls was perfectly ripe. The only issue problem we had is that I we asked for grilled salmon on Philadelphia but got fresh instead. We did not actually realize it until half way through the meal so left it as-is. An interesting detail about this place is that one can actually order their meal on a tablet instead of scrolling through a traditional menu. The thing lacking through was an actual description of the dish. Our waitress was quick to correct it and supplement us with the list of ingredients on demand.
