Review Byron Freehouse - London

Rebecca Sim
Top notch experience! From the friendly phone call to the customer services while we settled my gift cards. Kim went above and beyond to personalize our order and ensure we had everything we needed (including cake;). The food was really flavourful and well presented. I would definitely recommend the crab cakes! Thanks again

Really nice place with good atmosphere. The food was good and Thursday night is acoustic music night. Maybe the only improvement needed is to add a big... big tv to watch the hockey game... they have 2 regular size right now. Guys... good job.

Great dinner out with family. Place wasn’t busy so server let us chose table. Sever was very friendly and knowledgeable. Everyone in my family was happy with the food they ordered. My burger was cooked really well and the Mac and cheese side was good. My sister’s salmon was cooked right, same with my mom’s fish and chips, my bother really liked the amount of meat on his turkey sandwich and my dad’s steak was cooked exactly to how he likes it. We’ve been here a few times and will definitely continue to come here!! Great job kitchen staff. :)

Hadn't eaten here for close to 2 years due to some bad service and food quality we were seeing being repeated. About a month ago we were in a jam late on a Saturday night and since they are local (which we try to support), and we had heard some good things from friends recently, we decided to give them a shot. Homerun. Menu had altered since our last visit and price was great, portions were great, it was made on time (we ordered ahead), and most of all it was Delicious. I had the Chicken Parm Sandwich and it was by far the best chicken parm I'd ever had! Decided to give them another go last night and got the same results! Friendly staff, great pricing and phenomenal food! I again had the best and tastiest Chicken Parm Sandwich ever. Freehouse if your reading this, your chef is doing a fantastic job. Glad to have this great local place back in our regular list of great places to eat!

I love this place! I’ve been a number of times and always want to go back. They have a great patio in the warm weather and a modern interior for the colder weather. Great food, great drinks. It’s a great spot in the heart of Byron.

Wow, what can I say that encapsulates the full ambience and positive vibration of this lovely establishment? Words will not do this review justice, but I will try. First, as you walk in from the patio you are instantly taken in by the amount of positive energy being given off by both the amazing staff and the patrons sitting enjoying their food/drinks. Everyone just seemed so happy! I've only been a handful of times but with every encounter I'm pleasantly surprised with every member of the staff and I've never had a poor dish served to me. My favourite server, Chelsea, brings with her a lovely and positive presence/demeanor. This indicates to me that the owners must be a good bunch. The menu has some great offerings and served with a smile in a timely manner. I love this place! Byron has a special gem with this establishment! Great job folks, keep spreading the love and light.

Wonderful pub. If you have mobility challenges, you need to climb 4 stairs to enter and the washrooms are in the basement down a flight of stairs. Otherwise, we enjoyed your evening. It is clean, the staff is friendly and the Jalapeno Burger was amazing!

Freehouse Pub has a good selection of draft beer. The Cajun dry wings and the Habanero dry wings are awesome. Kim the waitress is so friendly, she is worth the drive to Byron. The beer can nachos are a good dish for sharing. Try the AK-47 light beer or the many beers on tap.

Quite a nice place..lots of selections for foods and drinks cocktails but way too much expensive as you would expected to any other fancy restaurants..wait is too long..but the service is okey they will always check you hows everything..

Amazing wings, try the beef ribs, they’re out of control. Cold beer, lots of selection. Went with a group of 4, everyone enjoyed their app and meal. Zero complaints.

The restaurant was very busy when we arrived. That said, the food did take a very long time and a couple of tables that arrived after we did, received their orders before us. We would have given 5/5 had the pace been quicker. When the food did arrive we were very happy with what we had ordered. Everything was prepared with care and you could tell the chef takes pride in what they are making. Our server made sure we were well taken care of and checked in with updates about our food regularly. The new ownership is definitely making a difference. We will definitely be back!!

Third time there. First two were unmemorable but today was horrible. Waiter was very nice but not on the ball at all. After ordering, came back and told me they were out of clams (which was my entire appy). Then came back again to tell my mom b/c they were out of clams, did she want to switch her dish from the seafood pasta. Argh. Brought appy of shrimp - totally cold, overbattered, super small pieces of 8 shrimp for $14! Way overpriced for what it was. Was served in an icecream dish with kale slaw underneath. Whole thing was overcovered in sauces and dressings. Ew. I ordered the fish tacos. Totally yucky. Basic overbattered fish atop of waaaay over mayo'd slaw, then more spicy may to top the fish. I could only eat one and felt sick after - so fatty. My toddler ordered the hamburger. Was asked after it came if he'd like cheese on it after the waiter watched me look under the bun. Nothing. Nothing on the bun but a way overdone piece of unedible meat. Fries were hot and fresh. That was the best part of both our meals. Then they brought the bill (no asking how we'd liek the bills?) and never brought my son his ice cream. Had to ask for it. Won't be back no matter how nice the patio or how convenient the location.

Went there for lunch today. This was my fourth time here but my first time eating. If you are going there for food...don't. If you are going there for drinks, do it. I had the Philly Cheesesteak and by far it was the worst mess of food I had ever had. Due to the fact that someone else was paying for my lunch, I politely ate it but could only choke down half of the sandwich. I won't eat there ever again, but I will certainly go in for drinks as they have probably one of the best beer lists in the West end of London.

Went for my bday dinner tonight. Will not be back. Fish tacos were terrible - slaw with 2 tiny pieces of dried out fish. Cabbage rolls filled with mushy rice. Chicken quesadillas terrible.
Only went once... I do really want to go again to give a second shot. Food was good but price was more then comparable places... What saves it tho is the service those guys were great right on top of it!

Been to the Byron Freehouse about a dozen times and will keep going back.

Excellent service. Premium pub food, they actually cook there, not just reheat or deepfry only!!

And the beer selection is wonderful, lots of standards always something new.
Kyle
Premium prices for ordinary pub food. Good selection of craft beers but the food is not what you'd expect for the price. $18 salad and $18 chicken pie. Add in a couple of beer and you wouldn't really expect it to come to just shy of $75 for two people.
We got an appetizer to share and our main course was on the table before we got half way through. The waitress liked the baseball team a table away from us a lot more than just a couple out for dinner. She knows where the money is. The restaurant was almost empty, so I'm not sure why we all had to sit together. Noisy swearing sweaty guys are not the right answer for dinner neighbors.
I wouldn't go back or recommend it to anyone. Unless of course you like that sort of thing.

We stopped in for an early dinner, the staff was very friendly, food was delicious, the restaurant was clean and inviting. We loved the mussels and deep fried pickles! Overall great experience!
Courtney
This place was great!!!!.... Went to dinner last Saturday day portions were perfect size didn't feel over full but just right... The food was amazing not one person I was with was disappointed and the service was amazing very friendly, relaxed, new what he was talking about
Overall would def go back new hot spot when I'm in london
Mike
I love this place... Michael Johns. Although the menu is relatively small, in numerous visits, I’ve never had a disappointing meal. Even if the soup du jure isn’t your favourite, get it. It’s always great. A good selection of beers on tap as well as a friendly staff who remembers you on your second visit round out this excellent local bistro. Another mark of a good watering hole, there always seems to be one of the owners on sight.

Great food and service...needs better ventilation. We enjoyed a great lunch there. All of our meals were excellent and the service was great! Only issue was the slight haze walking in, strong smell of fried food, and then our clothing having a strong smell of fried food when we left. I think they need to sort out the ventilation in the kitchen. Otherwise it was a great food experience.

Premium pub food and terrific service. Excellent food and attentive service make the Byron Freehouse a cut above the average neighborhood pub. Their chicken wings--a longtime pub-food staple--have a nice, crispy exterior and are well-paired with the honey & rosemary or Korean BBQ sauces. Highly recommended.

Bossy22. Have not had a bad meal at the Byron Freehouse. The wait for the food is sometimes long but really where isn't? Maybe McDonald's lol. It's all about the food and good service at the Byron Freehouse. I highly recommend it for any occasion. Just call ahead so they don't get slammed and no one gets there meal in a timely fashion.

I had the fish tacos, and they were great!
Megan Van Der Burg
Great food! Nice patio, fantastic service, and an overall good experience.
Tommy Grande
Great location but way overpriced & no atmosphere. Really expensive... Slow service... Small portions...

In all fairness it was really tasty but the overall experience was lacking any kind of wow factor that would warrant multiply visits. A solid "once in a while" joint... But designed for a quick in and out. Not welcoming enough to want to stay for very long... despite such a great location.

Great lunch with my son great food and service

Amazing good and service! Definitely a must if you're around Byron!
Meg
First time visiting and not the last. Amazing food and service. Probably the best Caesar salad I've ever had.
Judysherritt
First time but not the last. Party of 4 and we were not disappointed. The food was looked delicious and tasted even better. The service was fast and courteous, and the atmosphere was comfortable. It was a little noisy but that is what I would expect when people are having a good time! Thanks for a great night out!

The meal I had with my mom and sister was incredible. I ordered the fish and chips and it tasted great. The salmon my sister ordered was also very well made. My mom also thoroughly enjoyed her meal. The best part had to be the cheesecake dessert! Very delicious! Highly recommend this restaurant.

The BF impressed me. Fish tacos, wedge salad, Thai beef salad all very good. My girlfriend had the spring rolls and they were also surprisingly good.

What a hidden gem! My boyfriend and I often dine out and we were so (happily) surprised by the elevated menu here at the Freehouse. We have enjoyed our meals both times we've been there. Friendly staff and a cozy atmosphere. We will definitely be back! :)

Not worth the drive to Byron. Enough said!

Delicious home style cooking. I came for a weekday lunch on the recommendation of a friend. I had the nachos and added in some of their homemade jalapeno peach sauce into the sour cream that came with the nachos for a spicy/sweet kick. The FreeHouse "Ice Tea" was also good!

Recommended. We have eaten here three times. Great service and even better food. We'll be back again.

Great place!. I have dined here a number of times, a few with my boyfriend, once with a friend. Love it. Relaxed atmosphere, food is excellent, staff friendly and attentive. There's something for everyone here.

Great new place. We had lunch here last week and the food and service were great!

I had the fish tacos which had nice pieces of mahi mahi (not flakes) and the soup of the day was clam chowder and I have never seen that much clam in soup.

Great job. We will be back!
Purtl66
We had the lunch special yesterday, chicken pot pie. Excellent!
Definitely will be back.

Terribly bland. Get a new chef or fail.. I was initially looking forward to eating here - the menu looked okay (for London) and had some nice-sounding culinary twists - a good addition to Byron, right? Unfortunately not... Service was okay (aside from the young lady who insisted on calling me "hon'" - I've probably been called worse, though). This restaurant's failure lies in its extraordinarily BLAND food. My table sampled a few dishes - Korean BBQ and Bourbon Molasses wings (the latter tasted like burnt molasses), spring rolls (EW soggy EW), Caesar salad, flatbread, the burger (how do you mess up a burger?!). I would not re-order anything. Don't waste your money. Sorry Byron - this place won't last long until they hire a chef with tastebuds. Wish I had've gone next door to the Legion for $4 pints and entered the meat draw...

Great Choice. Excellent meal - the waldorf salad is amazing!
Siobhan
Great food and atmosphere! LOVED The meatloaf and gruyere mashed potatoes! Such a delicious twist on comfort food. Will be back soon!

Great Food and Great Staff. I went here for lunch after my family and i found out that Waldo's in Byron is closed on sundays. The food here is great and fresh and they make stuff in house which is cool and the staff here was great and knowledgeable about things on the menu and the atmosphere is great. The only down side is that i wish we could have seen the whole menu they have instead of this half menu we got to look at.
Food Goes In Here
Had the lunch special and soup of the day, it was awesome! Staff we're amazing and service was speedy! Will be back for sure!

Mikew@xplornetaustin. My wife and I, have now been to this restaurnat 4 times, and have never been disappointed. The previous restaurant(s) in this location have not done well. Problems with parking, pricing, lack of consistency, poor staff etc. Well I am pleased to say that The Byron Freehouse has corrected 3 out of the 4 major problems with this location. The menu is varied from Burgers to Ribeye steaks, We've had the Ribeye twice now, and highly recommend it..... In fact we fought over the leftovers this morning. When you order a steak medium rare, you want your steak medium rare..... As we have ordered this twice each time the steak was exactly medium rare, tender and deliously seasoned. No need to reach for the salt and pepper here. The beans and baby squash were crisped and perfectly done..... the whole meal was delicous and from a consistency point of view that's 2 for 2 or if one is doing the math, thats 4 ribeyes perfectly cooked on 2 separte occasions. The staff was friendly and attentive and the owner (Cathy) reconginzed our reservation from previous visits and came and greeted us personally at our table..... Now that's what I call proactive service... The menu is interesting from finger foods to steaks, and the quality of the food is A+, well aged beef, delious butter milk chicken, spicy korean wings etc. and of course the standards, burgers, fries, pasta etc. The portions are large and the pricing is reasonable to high end depending on what your tastes are...... My wife and I have shared desserts twice and I have to say the Banana Bread Pudding is something you should share or you'd better be really hungry because it was a meal in it's own right. The Pecan pie tart was okay but I thought the crust could have been better..... This is something I shared with the waiter (Mark) so hopefully it is something they tweak in the future.....So parking aside, if you want to catch a burger and some beers with the boys or have a lovely sit down dinner with that someone special in your life, I recommend you give The Bryon Freehouse a try.....

Big Fan!!. Our family has been numerous times because we like it so much! There is an eclectic menu to cater to everyone. The food is excellent! The staff is friendly and personable! We will be back again and again.
Neil VanderSmoot
Terrible. Ridiculously overpriced for poor food, an exceptionally tacky interior and miserable staff. The only benefit to eating here is having a selection of restaurants in the area to choose from once you leave.

My husband and I went for our Anniversary and they made it amazing. The food was delectable and the service was par for the course. The owner even brought us drinks soooo nice.
LoganPhiveChive
Surprisingly low 62% rating for an awesomely unique place in this area, I'm dissappointed with the urbanspooners. Well thought out menu with a good beer selection, what more can you want?
Linda Rice
Byron Freehouse has an eclectic menu sure to please every foodie out there. Great service, love the staff and urban decor...luv it
Mr_sturmy
I seriously don't know what the people who have a problem with this place are talking about. The decor is not dark or uninviting, the staff are friendly as heck and knowledgeable and the portions for the price are decent. The roasted red pepper soup was the best I've ever had period.(and yes I have been outside of London) And the p hilly beef was tasty. If you haven't been by you should make an effort to experience this little gem of a place

Hit the spot for sure!. I loved the variety that the freehouse has on their menu, they really do have something for everyone. The staff was very welcoming, food was delicious, great atmosphere. We will definitely be going back soon! Well done guys!
Meranda_norris
Hit the spot!. We were impressed with the selection of appetizers and had a hard time before we decided on the grilled vegetarian flatbread & korean wings with the help of our friendly and knowledgable server, quite possibly the best wings in town! Afterwards, we split the Roasted Pear salad and finished with mason jar key lime pie & Blueberry Tea. Before we left, we were already planning our next visit. Great new place! Best of luck guys!
Chris
Amazing burgers, fries and caesar salad!. Great food!!! been before and will be back again!... big sizes, great service..good atmosphere!
Megan
Good enough, but not great. The menu is all over the place, from hot dogs to carpaccio.
The food was good, but I had expected more - in serving size and in quality.
Service was good, but I found the atmosphere uninspiring.
Best of luck guys, but I wont be back.
Jrow
Great food, great atmosphere, great people! Best place to eat in Byron

Absolutely incredible food, the treehouse Philly is one of my favorite items in London. The staff are super friendly, I would recommend the Byron freehouse to everyone in London!
Elaine
We'll be back!. Eight of us went for dinner Sunday night, first time. The food was great, service fabulous. We will all be back and will tell all our friends. Keep up the good work.

We'll be back!!!!. Had a great time on Saturday night. Food and service was excellent. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable about menu, As an appetizer we shared the Korean Wings... they were fantastic! My boyfriend had the fish tacos and he's still raving about how great they were. I ordered and thoroughly enjoyed the chili. We were in no hurray and our server was more then happy to let us set the pace. The food presentation was excellent, it arrived hot and everything was very tasty. This restaurant has only been open a short time and I am thoroughly impressed. We can't wait until our next visit!

RIP. This place will follow down the path of every other restaurant that's tried to make it at this location - out of business. Crappy food, boring atmosphere and grumpy staff.
Liz Spruyt
We do not like it. My husband and I have went three times now. We really wanted to give it a chance because it is a local place. We both love the patio, and of course they serve the steigl raddled on tap. But that's where the good points end. We tried the three different dips with naan breads. It lacked any flavour. It felt like eating pablum. The second time we ordered the ground brisket burger. One with fries the other Mac and cheese. The waitress assured us that it would be done to medium rare. It came very well done and very dry. The Mac and cheese had no cheese taste and really dry. The third time we order the fish tacos. The flavour was good, but on a six inch taco you got a pice of fish one inch. What's up with that. I had the fish and chips. The fish tastes like it had been dunked a couple times in grease. It came with a limp salad that tasted three days old and was warm. Also the fries are not crisp and taste like they are done in an oven and not deep fried. Overall we decided that we will not be going back a fourth time. The service was good. The food was horrible. It was almost like they pulled cooks off the street with no knowledge of working in a res't.
Chris
Not impressed. I ordered the gnocci and while it was tastey, the portion size was very small. The atmosphere/ambience could be greatly improved (lacks character). I would not go back given the prices are high considering the weak menu, service, and ambience.
