Review Los Comales - London

Derick Ebbinghaus
Great service and the food was amazing. I recommend the beef empanadas for an appetizer they were delicious. I ordered the Tonga Poblana tacos with rice and beans and would rate it a 10/10. The dark beans were some of the best I have ever had.

Food was amazing. All home-made and so fresh. They even had tamales! Very friendly staff, service was very fast. Small and cozy place. I love that they have combo plates so you can try a bit of everything. I found the prices were more than fair especially for the amazing quality of food.

We ordered here for the first time last night, it’s now our go-to for authentic Latin eats! Absolutely everything was delicious and very reasonably priced. We HIGHLY recommend the mole enchiladas. We were so in love with our dinner I forget to get a picture of them! And those pupusas. AMAZING. The combo for two is a perfect way to try a bit of almost everything.

Wonderful food. Amazing service. We stumbled upon this place last week and we can't wait to go back again! Sooo many tasty vegan options (I was very impressed). The restaurant style is simple (def down to earth), but so cozy. Loved it. Thank you!!!!

Food was absolutely delicious. Great service. Will definitely return

food was delicious, although it could be a bit spiced or salty. its not overpriced i d say considering the authentic taste that they are trying to provide.

Fresh, hot and delicious!! We enjoyed pupusas, enchiladas and rice and beans. The attendant in the restaurant was pleasant and attentive and I received my made for me order (takeout) in under 15 mins. Parking is plentiful and free and overall a pleasant experience. Def a must-try. We will be back again!! Maybe we will dine in next time. ✌

Authentic food was wonderful and made vegan! Friendly service and charming cozy spot. Will go back for more enchiladas! Took the empanadas and homemade hot sauce to go - devoured in 5 minutes.

Amazing authentic Latin food in the heart of London. Not many tables so reserve or arrive early.

Took my daughter here to eat after a particularly grueling day where she basically volunteered her time without complaint. She'd never been here before and fell in love with the food. Haven't seen her smile like that in a while. Thanks Los Comales. You got 2 customers for life!

Was my first time ordering from here and definitely will not be my last! They offer lots of vegetarian options which initially drew me to this restaurant. My order was ready to go when I got there to pick it up! I ordered the jalapeño cheddar soup and the tostadas with eggplant. Both were delicious and tasted very authentic! Prices were reasonable and the service was great! Will definitely be recommending this place to others!
Cindy
Great food and nice people. Horchata, fajitas, chimichangas, and churros were amazing. The jalepeno cheese soup is to die for!

This place is amazing!! Best Latin food I've ever had! I would recommend this place to anyone! This is the Chimichanga I had.

Lady there was helpful to get us vegetarian meal suggestions. The combo had more than I would usually eat so I passed on dessert. We both really enjoyed our meals and look forward to going again.

This is a very quaint little restaurant. You certainly wouldn’t go here for the ambiance. I really wanted to love this place because of its great reviews and it being family owned (I assume), unfortunately I wasn’t that impressed. I ordered a taco salad, tamale and an appetizer with fried yuca. The appetizer was so greasy there was a pool of grease on the bottom of the plate. The taco salad was by far the best part of the meal (the homemade dressing was amazing). I love love love tamales so I really wanted to find a great spot for them in London, unfortunately that wasn’t the case mine was completely bland. It was missing that sweet corn flavour that I love from tamales. I may go back and give it another try for a burrito or something.

My guest and I got chicken Pupusas, beef tacos, and the chimichanga. Everything was fresh, homemade, and flavourful. I don't know enough about Latin food to comment on it more than that.<br/>The server was very friendly, if slightly inattentive, but this is often the case with ethnic restaurants. The decor is basic, but the prices are very fair so I have no complaints there either.<br/><br/>I would definitely recommend it!
Rachel
Food is tasty, portions are big (I ordered lunch sized at dinner) but it took a long time for our food to come out and the servers were not attentive at all but they were very friendly. I would return to try other menu items and I do recommend you try this place out.
Cristina
A small restaurant featuring complex flavours and many delightful dishes. The location isn't the greatest but I highly recommend this restaurant!
Ashley A
Great food and service! The food all tastes like a great home cooked meal. The restaurant is a bit smaller, so it's probably safe to make reservations for dinner time

Took my youngest daughter out the other night. Wanting her to try new things, decided to try here.<br/><br/>First impression was good on this Quant 10 table restaurant. Greeted by a nice smile by Lady working the dining room. <br/><br/>Having appetizers and soup to try new things. The cheddar jalapeños soup was hot and delicious. Even my 9 year old loved it. <br/><br/>The empanadas and pupusas were so good. Not what you get in the frozen section at grocery store. This was unique and fresh. Good size for the price of an appetizer.

Some of the best Mexican/Salvadorian food in the city! We both had combo platters that came with a pupusa, rice and beans, empanada, chimichanga and a cabbage salad. The churros and ice cream for dessert were fantastic! Everything tasted fresh and homemade, and we had delicious margaritas to wash it all down. Very friendly atmosphere. We will definitely return.

Had an awesome experience here three of us went there for dinner we got the two combos and nachos to eat also got the Mexican Hot chocolate the waitress was very nice very helpful knew the menu perfectly. Changed. This was our go to restaurant in London, we raved to friends and family about the food, the service and the atmosphere; we tried out their new location last night and found that it wasn't just the locale that had changed. The restaurant was more of a diner - not very good service, freezing dining room, odd atmosphere, and lower quality food all at the same prices that they charged at their last location with their higher quality food. We were extremely disappointed and will not be going back.

To: Elizabeth M. Spruyt. For a restaurant to be officially closed on Urbanspoon, there has to be an updated request sent to them and then they have to confirm the closing. <br/>It will usually take between a day to about half a week or so. <br/><br/>And sorry to hear that you had to pay for the parking. <br/>But perhaps just try and remember to doublecheck <br/>your sources (social media, phone, email) if the place is open for business <br/>or not. I know I have made my fair share of trips to a place and then it is disappointingly closed.
Elizabeth M. Spruyt
Closed. We went for lunch, paid $2.00 for parking only to find the place had closed three months ago. Thanks for updating urbanspoon.
Joe Hunt
Amazing , I haven't had such a well prepared meal at such a low cost in a long time
Paul Mick
Very good meal. Went for lunch with 3 friends and had the Chimichanga and it was great. Friends had the Quesadilla and Burrito and noted they were great as well.<br/><br/>Would recommend to others for sure.
Jane Quackenbush
Food was fantastic Great music. Authentic experience. Will definitely go back
Nan
The food was so good! I had a pork pupusa, and the Mexican Enchilada and my best friend had a bean pupusa and a chicken Chimichanga! Great dinner! The bean pupusa was my fav. Service was a little slow (gave us time to catch up), one waitress (and exam week) All and all, great food, great music and the waitress was very knowledgable and very pleasent! We will be going back very soon!
Big Daddy
Very authentic! Chimichanga was "off the hook"- guy fiery....- and the jalapeño soup was luxurious.

Cute Place. The place was small and there was a big party the night we went. The food was ok but our server seemed new. She messed a lot of our meal up but was very accommodating when asked to fix it. I expected more from the food but again, they had a big party in so maybe the chef was overwhelmed. Will definitely be back again to try the food when they don't have a big party. The other reviews seem great so I am excited to go back.
Jenn C
Cute little true authentic Latin restaurant. Food was fantastic w/ big portions. It's not a very big restaurant so the service isn't the fastest but you really don't wait that long. Our server was a cute and sweet Latin lady. Definitely eating there again
Kmac
Love this Restaurant. Everything's fresh and authentic. A must go !

Based On Food. When I write a review I concentrate on food. I got chicken tacos and guacamole. The food is good. It's not great. Not a lot of flavour in the tacos. Guacamole was quite good. If you want better, fresher and cheaper food go to or order from True Taco.

Absolutley Amazing!!. I've been to Los Comales 3 times now and it gets better and better everytime!! The lady who works there is so kind and I just appreciate how hard of a worker she is. Also, the Food is out of this world! It's not a long wait at all and its fresh and delicious! The pupusas and chimichangas are to die for! Its usually not very busy when we go and I am shocked at this everytime because its the best food I have ever had! Me and my friend tell everyone about this place as a MUST to try.
Foodie5
Authentic!. Loved the food and the quantity!

My favourite restaurant in London. I go to this restaurant almost everytime I go out to eat. I have never written a restaurant review before but I had to add my voice to all of these negative posts! When you try this restaurant (and you should) please take a moment to chat with the owner or one of the servers. It has been the same owner since they opened. She is possibly the BEST cook ever! Obviously there was a bad server there for about a month (when many of the negative posts are dated) but she is gone now! I have had nothing but great service there! Since it is a small restaurant it is difficult for them to determine when it is going to be busy. When they get busy things do slow down but I am happy to wait since all of the food is so fresh and obviously made when you order it. A great way around this is to make a reservation so they can call in an extra server!<br/><br/>Here are some of my favourite dishes (Latin American NOT necessarily Mexican)...<br/>Guacamole is the BEST but sometimes needs more chips<br/>Chile Relleno (Stuffed pepper) which comes in a beef or vegetarian option <br/>Burrito which comes in beef/pork or chicken or vegetarian<br/>Chimichanga which is chicken or beef or seafood or vegetarian<br/>Deep friend ice cream is a MUST<br/>Churros are also awesome<br/><br/>I am a vegetarian so I pay attention to the "options" I have never had a problem with any animals arriving in my food. I have even gone with friends who are vegan and gluten free as well as carnivores and we have all received what we ordered. The owner is very accomodating and as long as the place isn't full I've never had a mix up.<br/><br/>Give this restaurant a try! And when you love it (and you will) come back and write a review!
Kanika Suri
Excellent!. Its a totaly whole in the wall but the food is so fresh it mels in your mouth. if you wnt good latin food and dont want to spend a fortune at under th valcno- the most terribe retaurant in town- come here. super quality guaranteed

Incredible. I'm actually surprised to see such negative responses below. Los Comales is absolutely one of my favourite restaurants. The food is consistently excellent, the staff as so friendly and charming, and you can tell that the food is fresh and made with passion. <br/><br/>When I go with friends, we often order several appetizers and share them. We aways get the guacamole, chicken flautus, and the plantainos fritos; sometimes we get soup or empanadas as well. Everything is ALWAYS delicious and full of flavour. Los Comales, hands-down, has the best guacamole that I've ever had. <br/><br/>To those who have had bad experiences, I'm sorry. But I urge you to give the restaurant and second chance so you can see just how incredible this restaurant is.
Melissa
Delicious every time!. I have never written a review before but I felt the need to stress that I am completely baffled by the negative comments on this website for Los Comales. I have been going to this restaurant about once a month since they opened and the food is always delicious (or else why would I go back?!). The owner is an absolute sweetheart and a wonderful cook. Although I always get the same thing (you simply can't go wrong with the chicken flautas and the pupusas - delicious every time!!) my boyfriend tries something new as often as he can and is always pleased with his meal. Anyone on here who is complaining about service has probably had the bad luck of being there when they are training a new server, because the owner is attentive quick and friendly! Anyone who is reading these reviews and is debating whether or not to check this place out, you should definitely go and fall in love with this place like I did, trust me! :)

It was an awful night. I was with a group of about 8 friends. They forgot 2 of our orders and the waitress didn't even notice for an hour and a half. When the food did come, it was not very tastey but, to be fair, by that point I was not in the mood to enjoy my meal - I just wanted to be out of there. There was meat in the vegetarian dishes but the waitress still charged us for that meal. Two of us paid with a groupon and at the end of the meal, the waitress brought us a receipt but then charged us a different amount. She was not able to provide us with a detailed receipt though so it was difficult to assess what we were being charged for. I'm pretty sympathetic towards staff and servers usually but it wasn't even busy when we were there - only us and one or two other tables the whole time.
No Critic
Bad experience overall, then food poisoning.. I love Latin food and have had many positive experiences with Latin restaurants in London. I was excited to try Los Comales as I had heard good things from friends, and when they offered a Groupon discount I decided it would be an excellent opportunity to try this restaurant. The Groupon was $20 and offered two drinks (juice or pop) and any two menu entrees up to $16.95 value each. That seemed like a great deal! I went to Los Comales the other day to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. We had made a reservation, but when we arrived, all the tables were dirty and it took 5 minutes for the server to seat us. We were seated at a dirty table, which was cleaned after a few minutes. The server asked if we had a Groupon, and demanded that we hand it over right away. She then indicated the special Groupon menu on a hand-written piece of paper stuck to the menu. Burritos or Chimichangas only, and pop - no juice. So they changed the Groupon specifications, which I found distasteful. I'm vegetarian, so I asked if I could order the Chili Rellenos instead of the burrito or chimichanga. The server said yes, and I clearly articulated that I wanted the vegetarian version. Our meals arrived, and when I cut into my chili there were giant chunks of meat. I sat there for 10 minutes before the server reappeared. I told her about the problem and she took the plate away. By the time my replacement arrived, my boyfriend was done his dinner and he sat there with an empty plate while I ate my meal. It tasted good enough, but toward the end of the chili, I noticed the inside was still frozen in some parts. Annoyed and frustrated with the whole situation, we left a measly tip and paid our bill for the HST (even though the Groupon specified HST was included!!). We left, and 3 hours late the food poisoning kicked in; awesome. We're never going back, and reserving our Latin dining experiences for great restaurants like True Taco and El Ranchito!

Stay away!!. We went to this restaurant recently, about half of the group had been before. It may have been the worst restaurant experience of my life. We arrived at the restaurant at 7:00 pm. It was busy at that time but we waited for about 5-10 minutes and then we were seated. We then waited for about ten minutes to obtain menus and then a further twenty minutes for someone to come and speak to us. By this time we had our orders ready. We all ordered the combo platters, half of us ordered beers and the other half ordered a mixed drink. The beers came in about ten minutes and the appetizers (guacamole with tortilla chips) came about twenty minutes after that. The guacamole was good but there were only about five chips along side it, which makes no sense as the guacamole is clearly the more expensive item. For the next hour we sat there as the waitress, who seemed very nice but clearly had no idea what she was doing, ran around from table to table and literally ran in and out of the bar pulling her hair out and speaking to everyone about how crazy busy she was (there were only about five tables for the majority of the time we were there). The table beside ours was a group of about six people. They slowly each received their dinners one at a time, so that the people who received theirs first had to either eat a stone cold dinner or finish their dinner in front of those who had no food, and then wait another hour while the last person at their table received their dinner. We had been there for about two hours at this point and we were very seriously contemplating leaving the restaurant, but now it was 9:00 pm. We still had not received our mixed drinks despite asking on three occasions. Finally at about 9:30 our food arrived. I asked the poor woman who was clearly cooking all the food on a back stove, by herself, and delivering all the meals, if she knew anything about the drinks we had ordered over an hour and a half earlier. She then went into the bar and made them so we finally received our drinks when we were three quarters of the way through our dinner. The waitress then came up to our table and muttered about how the chef makes better drinks anyway. We ate our food, elements of which were good but not the best latin food I had ever had. It was a bit bland, even with the 'hot' salsa. Finally three hours after we had been seated we asked for the bill (and it came quickly!). We were shocked when our waitress had charged us for the drinks which took over 1.5 hours to make and which were requested four times prior to being received. This isn't the way you run a restaurant. We will never be back.

Friendly and Amazing!!!. Went in for a quick lunch - only other person in there aside from another couple, the lady serving me was very friendly and sweet. I had the most delicious tortilla soup, piping hot and loaded with chicken, avocado and chips, so good I nearly licked the bowl clean! Followed up steaming hot, fresh pork and cheese pupusas that blew my mind! Served fresh off the griddle with curtido and a delicious tomato sauce, unbelievable!!!<br/><br/>Not a single complaint about either the service or the food, what a lovely place to have lunch, I will be back!!!

Not an improvemant. My friend and I went for dinner last night and we were disappointed with the changes to Los Comales.<br/><br/>Neither of us had been to Los Comales since the change but every time we had been there before, both the food and service had been great. The family that ran the restaurant were attentive and friendly, everything came out quickly and the food was delicious and authentic.<br/><br/>Last night was not the case.<br/><br/>When we were greeted we noticed that it was not the same Spanish family as before; instead it was a very nervous looking man who asked us repeatedly if it was just us two or if we had a group.<br/><br/>Then the waitress, who seemed pretty unsure with herself, took our drink orders; my iced tea came first, as it was in a can, but my friend's Pina Colada took around 10 to 15 minutes. When asked why, the waitress said because it "had to be put into a blender and uh, blended." We then watched the man who had greeted us struggle to work the blender. When the drink finally arrived, it had seeds in it which my friend picked out.<br/><br/>The small restaurant, which was never very full in the past, was maybe half full but it still took the waitress quite a while to get back to us to take our order. When my friend ordered the burrito, she asked, "With what in it?" even though it wasn't a dish that had choices. I asked what came in the tacos other then the meat, she replied with "Oh... I guess maybe some lettuce..." before trailing off. It was clear she did not know the menu at all.<br/><br/>After waiting for our food for a good while we asked how much longer it would take since we had a previous engagement to get to. We overheard from the kitchen that our order had not been put in. When the waitress returned she said that they could get us our food "lickity-split."<br/><br/>After the food arrived, it was clear the food was not authentic Latin food. The rice was clumpy and clearly had been done in a microwave, and the salad dressing looked like it came from Kraft. The burrito and enchilada, however, were very good. We quickly finished and asked for our bill. It's a shame that this once wonderful restaurant is no longer what it used to be.

Where do I begin?. Quite frankly, I'm surprised to see all of the positive reviews below for this restaurant. Perhaps they were having an off night. I did overhear the owner saying that they were "swamped" -- which is interesting because there was *maybe* a dozen people in the entire restaurant at one time in the 2 1/2 hours we were there. <br/><br/>My biggest complaint pertains to the "vegetarian" section on their menu. I put the word vegetarian in quotations simply because, if you are a vegetarian, you might end up eating some type of animal if you order in this restaurant. We ordered the eggplant lasagna, which was thankfully free of meat (I think), but it appears that the rice it came with contained chicken. That's just the beginning. We also ordered the stuffed green pepper from the vegetarian section, which was supposed to include rice, but we were extremely surprised when we found ground beef mixed in with the rice and more chicken in the other side of rice. <br/><br/>I'm not sure if the waitress was recently hired, so I am extremely hesitant to put any of the blame on her. She was clearly overwhelmed with the situation, and it's more than likely that there was a mixup in the kitchen. However, when an individual specifically orders a meal from your restaurant and they are presented with something they did not order, it's probably a good idea to offer to take that food away and prepare something they will actually eat. It is especially not okay to make an individual pay for a meal that they did not eat. <br/><br/>Perhaps all of these other positive reviews are coming from the omnivore patrons, but for future vegetarian patrons, when you order something from the "vegetarian" section on their menu, make sure that you remind them that cows and chickens are not vegetables.

SUCH an awesome restaurant! You can tell it's owner operated, and they bring such authenticity to the place. I love Mexican food, but have always been disappointed in places like under the volcano, or the fast food options. I have finally found my new Mexican haven, and will be back regularly. It's too bad the location sucks, or it'd be packed day and night. I hope people discover this gem the way I did, donut never closes.
JK
Horrible. Well for someone who loves mexican food and frequents restaurants in London I was baffled to read how highly rated this place was. I am not one to write reviews but Los Comales was hands down the worst restaurant experience to date. We were a party of 6 and it took over 3 hours to get our main course. Not sure why we waited as long as we did, I think we thought the food was going to be amazing. It was the worst mexican food I have ever had to date. Nothing authentic about it, very tex mex style and came out stark cold. Not to mention it took ages to get our drinks and appetizers. It was the most frustrating restaurant experience and it baffles me to think that people actually enjoy this place. El Ranchito far exceeds the food here. we had a variety of items on the menu and empanades were the only thing I would recommend. But the slow service and quality of other food would never make it worth anyones while to eat here. All I have to say is, dont waste your time or your money!

Los Comales carry-out. Hi, spooners - I am at this moment savoring perhaps the most delicious chile relleno I've ever had outside of Mexico. The addition of peas is a surprise, but fine. The beef is savory, the chile mild but cooked just right. Guacamole and chips are also delicious! Go for lunch or get carry-out like I did, the price is right and it's something different AND delicious for lunch!
Dr. Dave
Not bad. Service was good, food was pretty good, fried plantains were greasy, but tasty, homemade sour cream is good, so is the salsa, mole sauce is not great which is too bad because that's what I was looking forward to the most. We'll probably go back but we won't rush to be there.
Jenn
Love it!. My boyfriend and I trusted the reviews here on Urban Spoon and decided to give this place a chance. We went in and although the restaurant is not fancy, it is very welcoming. Our server was very welcoming and friendly and our orders were fresh, hot and delicious. The only complaint I have was parking. Due to the location parking is difficult to find.
Jdouth02
Quick Service, Great Food. I went here with family for a birthday dinner. The server was very polite and funny. The food was wonderful. Each person ordered a different dish, and everyone agreed the food was delicious. It came out really quickly, very fresh and very hot. We will definitely be returning!!
Jen
Loved the food! Buckets of beer are fantastic! Authentic and delicious.
Louis
Los Comales has the best Latin (Mexican) food I have ever had. It is ALL homemade and excellent. Go there, you'll love it.
Chris Pinnegar
Decent food. Service very slow. Do not go here if you are on a tight schedule.
Kittenje
Excellent!! Really authentic!!. We got the fried plantains, combo dos, combo uno and the horchato to drink. All the food was fresh made and very authentic (real Latin food not Tex-Mex). The server was friendly as well and seems to take pride in the food. Good portion sizes for a reasonable price. We did not have room for dessert but are eager to go back as the table next to us ordered dessert and it looked delicious. Will definitely be going back!
Kirk
Walked in on a Monday night after seeing the rating on here and we were literally the only people there but we decided to trust the urbanspoon-ers and give it a try. Had the cheddar jalapeño soup, combo a dos and the churros. All hand-made and very good! Authentic flavours, good service...a little lacking in atmosphere but we were there for the food.
Charles
Disappointed. The service was slow. We sat there for 20 minutes waiting for our order to be taken. Then it took another 50 minutes for our food to arrive. The food was awful. Everything was fried. Most of it was tasteless. All of it was like chewing on leather. Not worth the time or the money.
Jeffrey Cooper
Wow. London finally has a great latin restauant to rival the big city ones.
Rob Dunford
The food was excellent! The owner is very friendly! This should be a top spot for Londoners to eat!!!
Millers
Try it! You'll love it!. We tried this place because of the reviews on Urbanspoon, and were not dissapointed. It's run by an immigrant family from El Salvador, and all the foodr is authentic. In fact, the family cooks it for you themselves. The waiter was attentive and helped us choose items as we were unfimiliar with some of the food. We had the combos to sample different things, and everything was FANTASTIC! We will return!
Scott
The food was amazing and authentic. All meals but 2 under $13. Can't ask for more from this place. Will be back soon.

My boyfriend and I went tonight , we just shared a bunch of appetizers to scope the place out. We had guacamole , flautos, and chimichangas. Everything was delicious! Loved the atmoshpere as well! Definitely will be going back many times!!!

Fiesta!. I first tried out Los Comales with the Combo Dos, having been hankering for Latin food and not being able to make up my mind. My experience was excellent!<br/><br/>I got some complementary nachos and salsa (home made and you can tell) and was very satisfied with the experience. Can't really describe the flavour other than it's everything I like in Latin food.<br/><br/>I've also had the amazing chimichanga and the fried ice cream is something else! (in an edible bowl, no less)<br/><br/>High recommended.
RB
Had the yuca frita, tacos el pastor and the combo dos. All we excellent, but the tradional El Salvadoran papusas really stood out (with the pork and cheese filling). And the margaritas were on sale! Seriously, why isn't this place packed? We didn't have any trouble finding a seat - but we should have! London, you don't seem to realize how lucky you are to have a place like this selling fresh, authentic food at such reasonable prices!
Mayflo
Jaz Hair. This is a unique and delicious latin restaurant. Aromas from latin america that are worth trying. Highly recommend this restaurant. Our team has been very impressed with the service and the flavours that this 'feels like you are in their home' restaurant has put together for their customers.
Julian Sonik
This restaurant is truly something special! Nicaraguan, Chilean and a wide array of other Latin foods makes this gem a keeper. Not spicy unless you ask for it, the food is served by the owner or her brother as though you are dining in their home. I reccommend this lovely restaurant without hesitation.
Eken
Great food!. If you like authentic mexican food, you should try it, the food is excellent, reasonable price. Good beer.
Taryn
We left the restaurant happily full, some of us with leftovers in tow that we figured would be perfect late-night nosh after the Said the Whale concert that had turned our feet towards London in the first place. (We also left feeling sad that we'd discovered a great place that was too far away to return to regularly - fortunately, it sounds like London has a solid music/concert scene...)
