Review The Black Trumpet - London

The jerk hen was really good. The only feedback is you should ask for the pricing on items that are not ok menu first to avoid surprise. We order a cauliflower crust pizza and a kids pasta which is just penna cheese and tomato sauce. The pizza was only 10 dollars but the pasta was 16.

Cozy and elegant place, friendly service and yummy food. Me and my date ordered The stuffed jalapenos for appetizers, then I ordered The duck breast for entree and we shared the dessert, which was The dark chocolate truffle brownie with home made icecream. The jalapenos were extremely delicious!! The duck breast was a little bit undercooked and I requested to get it cooked more, I got another piece of the meat with no fuss! And the dessert excellent. 😊

The cosy rustic atmosphere is charming especially the lovely fireplace that divides the room. I wanted to try the restaurant through londionlicious thinking it would be a good opportunity with some price break. After comparing the londionlicious menu with the regular menu I discovered that there wasn't much of a break. Luckily the londionlicious options were off their regular menu so in that regard it was a good way to try their regular menu but at this price, might as well do it without the special event. As for the meal, my husband had the sushi tampura, which was mostly rice and barely there filling, and the falafel, which was flavorful. I had the butternut squash soup, which I found to be very filling and tasty and enjoyable. I also had the Seafood Linguine which was very flavorful and found the sauce to be light and complimentary to the seafood. Overall good experience but I did expect the food to be flavorful throughout as per the previous reviews.

Great place to celebrate a special occasion or just a night out. I took my wife here on our first date and now we keep on coming back. Good food but the ambiance could be improved. Interior and decor feels a bit dated. Every time we’ve been here the service has consistently been slow. Slow-ish service doesn’t really bother me that much it just gives us more time to talk but I’m sure this would bother others.

Service is amazing and the staff is very knowledgeable. The wine selection was fantastic which we selected from BC. The wild mushroom and black truffle pasta was impeccable. We highly recommend this restaurant for a beautiful date night.

My first time here and I loved their Jerk Hen dish! Their stuffed jalepeños are a must try! The service is attentive and friendly. The atmosphere is cozy and elegant. I plan to return. Be prepared to spend $$$

My single favourite restaurant in the city. Consistently great food, very nice ambiance. I've shared some wonderful memories with my partner and family here and I look forward to the next time I can return!

The Black Trumpet restaurant in London, Ontario, has the most wonderful, Indonesian teak inspired, interior decor found anywhere. The name, seemingly, inspired by the black trumpet (black chanterelle) edible mushroom. The whole area is divided into a number of comfortable and varied sections permitting both individual and group settings. I ordered an entree of Seafood Linguine comprising; sautéed shrimp, scallops, overrated mussels (Please chef, study the long list of ingredients found on a list of sea food), spinach, and cherry tomatoes, in white wine dill cream sauce, which had signs of prior preparation, confirmed towards the end by a complete loss of temperature. Nevertheless, the dish was saved by a very palatable glass of sauvignon blanc (Map Maker, New Zealand). The chosen dessert was, truly, a wonderful surprise; Black Chocolate Brownie with caramel sauce, fragments of fruit, and ice cream. This was absolutely delicious and deserves a Gâteau du Grand Prix. During the summer, meals (or an afternoon glass of wine coupled with a slice of Black Chocolate Brownie, ‘smile’) may be enjoyed on the patio of a beautiful private Zen-inspired garden. A couple of McDonald’s inspired reviewers who, obviously, prefer plastic chairs, have ignorantly, and incorrectly, complained of expensive dishes, which should not influence your choice for a visit.

Highly recommend!! The food was totally amazing. We got the special for the night which was lamb and it had to be one of the best dishes I've ever had. Service was super great as well!

I’ve been to the Black Trumpet about five or six times over the last few years, including last week. This is one of London’s better restaurants, especially if you’re looking for a more upscale experience. The ambience is business casual, tablecloth and candles. The food is similar to most higher end restaurants. There isn’t a particular style or theme of food - expect to see familiar plates like prime rib, rack of lamb, chicken supreme, etc. Appetizers are excellent. Personally, I’ve had the butternut squash soup and maki rolls - the rolls are a big favourite of many people. The mains are smaller to medium fair but very good. I had the lamb rack and it was excellent. Dessert is average. I had a very good cheese cake before but have also had an average brownie. Servers are good, pretty knowledgeable about the meals. Wine list is average. There’s a prix-fix menu during London-licious for those who want to try a few different smaller items at a discount, which I’d recommend for people on a budget. The price is a little high for the food but you’re paying for ambience. This place is suited best for fancy business dinner and anniversaries. Parking is limited to street parking, which can be tricky on busier nights. Probably best to uber. Overall, relatively reliably more upscale restaurant in London. I’ll be back.

I went here with a few colleagues to celebrate a one year anniversary and the food was great, service fantastic and atmosphere perfect. Our serving staff was kind enough to answer our questions about the menu and shared album and song information with my co-worker who loved the music. Looking forward to going back!

Never disappoints, service and food is always top notch! Pictured: Smoked Beef Shortribs over Mexican rice.

You will not be disappointed by this restaurant. It's one of those places that will bring you a decent enough meal each time. Though there has been fluctuation in their quality of food. Their fried sushi roll is a crowd pleaser. I'm sad they discontinued the bow tie. Portion is very generous, and the atmosphere is amazing. I love their decor, it's darker, subtle and makes it very comfortable to sit and chat at the table. Their patio at the back is cozy yet comfortable.

Very nice restaurant. The service was nothing special but the food I recieved was great (Salmon) and the general ambience was very nice. We were there for lunch, and after being impressed by outdoor entrance and the table area, the negative thing that was hard to ignore was the dirty menu. We ordered and my food was great although I would have liked a menu that offered a few non standard meals. A great example of this would be the cheesecake or brownie offered as dessert, I would have preferred something a little more special. All in all, the cost was about right.

A most pleasant dining experience overall. Fried Brie and Mussels appetizers were outstanding. Service was excellent. Main course for both of us was the seafood pasta. Mine was delicious.lots of seafood. A very tasty sauce and pasta perfectly done. Sadly my wife's pasta arrived without any sauce making it dry and pretty tasteless. Server was quick to take it back once we got her attention and had 'some' sauce added. This improved her dish, but by that time I was nearly finished. Too bad this happened, did not expect such a faux pas at the BT. Also if you sit at the back near the patio in winter, wear a jacket- very cool.

We sat on the patio for lunch. It is far enough away from the front of the restaurant that it seems like it is a private enclave in the middle of the city. The Londonliscious menu allows patrons to try a 2 course or 3 course meal at a reasonable price. We sampled the mussels, maki rolls, Caesar salad and spinach salad for our apps. The entrees were plentiful, well presented and delicious. thanks to our server Melissa and chef Scott for another great dining experience.

This was my first visit to The Black Trumpet. We were greeted very nicely and seated promptly. The service was attentive but not rushed. The food was also quite good, with appropriate pricing. I am likely to return my next time in London.
Fine Diner
Went to this place before attending the North American preview of Chariots of Fire at the Grand
Theatre. Absolutely phenomenal performance.
Good meal too. Partner started with a beet and arugula salad to compliment the chicken focaccia and home made fries. I had the bison burger with home made fries and complimented it with a squash soup. Everything was cooked and presented well, although a number of fries were cooked to the burn mode. Am sure if I pointed it out they would have rectified it. It's a little pricey but has good quality to make it worth it. Would have no problem returning.

A perfectly quiet and elegant place for a few friends to lunch and chat on a Saturday. So many interesting and healthy choices on the menu. The other three opted for the veggie burger and raved, though one was a little charred. I had the shrimp tempura with radish and cabbage slaw. They were done just right, plump and juicy inside, crispy light coating outside. The service was friendly and prompt but not intrusive. I can't wait for the patio to open!

I’ve been to the Black Trumpet a few times and really enjoyed he food. Excellent flavours and the portions were surprisingly decent. It’s a tad expensive but it’s one of the nicer restaurants in London. I’d definitely recommend.

Food is good and the quality is mostly consistent. Service is pretty good. When i say mostly consistent because I've gone to this restaurant and received some clearly sub par dishes. All in all, most of the time, you know you are getting some good food that'll satisfy your belly. The space is definitely a highlight of the restaurant, very calm and comfortable.

Only have been there one time for a birthday dinner and I have to say that it was excellent. Great wine list and seasonal menu that was truly amazing. Everyone in our party left full and happy and we will definitely be back soon!

I simply love this restaurant , wine selections very good. I had the butternut squash ravioli with toasted sage , soooo good ! Really well made food here

For Londonlicious 2015 lunch;

Grilled calamari was delightful - not too chewy and not mushy, flavours were vibrant; the tempura sushi was a little gimicky - the veggies inside were so-so and the batter was crisp and light but the rice was way too wet; the seafood linguine was probably one of the best I've ever had (and the portion was generous). Scallops and shrimps perfectly cooked and the pasta was al dente with lots of butter.
The best thing about the restaurant was the ambience. Sit on the patio if you can - it's a small shaded courtyard that's secluded and away from the busy street!

Dining here was an amazing experience! The service was impeccable. Our server was delightful. The chef prepared our meals to perfection.

Best restaurant. Always the best service and best food. My favorite restaurant in London.

Pleasantly Surprised!!!. After not being able to get into the Icarus Resto. Bar, as we had originally hoped to try, we were steered to the Black Trumpet.. What a bit a serendipitous good luck!! We did not have reservations ( and they were packed ), but the fine gentleman named Kapitan made sure we were seated promptly ( at the bar ) and served expediently. The appetizers were delicious and the entrees were prepared perfectly, beautifully presented, and were of large portion size. Unfortunately, we didn't have room for desert.. maybe next time. Thanks for a wonderful meal and experience!!!

Good service, OK food, overpriced.. We came for the londonlicious menu, which was a good deal at $30 for three courses.
Had the bt bowties and seafood linguine (we shared both), and maybe we ordered wrong but they were nothing amazing. I didn't realise the bowties were referring to pasta, which I thought was a bit odd with tenderloin steak pieces. It wasn't bad, but tasted like something you could make yourself at home with a decent recipe.
Overall, I probably wouldn't go back and pay full price, but it wasn't a bad evening. We were disappointed because from what we had heard we thought it would be much better.

Ordered the same dishes, had two different experiences. Mixed reviews here, largely because my five-spiced duck confit was absolutely amazing, and my husband's was bland, tough and dry. Overall, it was an odd experience.

I called to make reservations for 7:00 on a Saturday evening. I was told they couldn't possibly give me a table at that time, but if I could come earlier, they could squeeze me in. 6:30 wasn't what I wanted, but it was Saturday night, and I was only calling two days ahead, so I understood. A few minutes later, the restaurant called back and asked if we could make it 6:15. Okay. Now, I understand you have to stagger the seatings, because you can't have every table in the restaurant ordering at once and overwhelming the kitchen, so I wasn't surprised when we arrived and there were lots of open tables. However, at no point in the entire evening was the restaurant more than half full. I can see one or two groups cancelling or not showing up, but half the restaurant? I was annoyed at whatever game they were playing by not giving me the reservation I wanted. (Yes I know it's only 3/4 hour difference. But why the shenanigan?)

The bottle of wine we chose would have been great, in about four hours. We asked to have it decanted, and were pleased that the server knew what we meant and how to do it, however, the wine really needed much more time. I was surprised that a restaurant would have a wine on their list that needed to breathe for so long before it was drinkable.

We loved our appetizers. The squid was perfectly cooked, the most tender I've ever had. The charcuterie plate was so good, I almost wanted to cancel my main course and have the charcuterie plate again! The mains were, as I said, remarkably different from one another. Dessert was fine and good quality, but nothing I'd go out of my way for again.

There was gum under my side of the table. People still do that???

We will probably go back. Food was excellent quality, (the reviewer who said it was only a couple of steps above Moxie's must not know the different between pre-fab and house made-pretty sure Moxie's doesn't make their own ice cream or elk sausage) and there was attention to detail, for sure, so we're guessing the problem with the duck was just a misfire. Next time I'll insist on the reservation time I want, and ask more questions about the wine.

Great food with attentive service. Went to dinner there tonight to enjoy the Londonlicious menu. We sat on the patio and enjoyed the ambiance. the food was excellent and the service was very good. We were offered suggestions for drinks and plates cleared away quickly when finished. I would recommend this restaurant..

Slow but okay. Slow service, but okay place. The food is a bit overpriced, considering it's only a few steps above chain restaurants, like moxies and such.

Julia P. I decided to take my husband out for his big promotion at work. I has reservations made.
The service was very slow, with a flare of them doing us a huge favor. The food was terrible: extremely over seasoned and over salted (this is coming from a salt lover). I am not sure if my husband and I were not to the liking of the owner/ host/ waitress, but the overall experience has left us extremely disappointed.
We had been to the restaurant a number of times in the past and back in the days the food was delicious and the service was prompt. These days, I would not recommend this restaurant for any occasion, especially if one considers the price.
Also, the seating was very uncomfortable and the washrooms were very, very cold.
The restaurant is definitely not what it used to be.

Got the prix fix Londonlicious menu items. Unfortunately either due to the fact that the restaurant was busy, or the fact that we didn't get additional drinks, the service was extremely poor. We literally saw our waitress three times: once to ask for drinks, once to order, and once for the bill. We were there for possibly an hour to an hour and half.
The main entree I got was salmon, which was dry. Especially compared to the char fillet I got from Blackfriars a couple days ago, this was very disappointing. My creme brûlée was under flamed as well. Overall unsatisfactory visit for the price.

Had good lunch today...beautiful patio.
Food n service were good but could have been better for this calibre of restaurant, e.g., Ceasar salad had real bacon but not Romaine hearts.

Last year I went for my birthday, twice! I loved the food so much great experience although we ordered the same things twice ( we loved it that much) a year later my birthday again my boyfriend surprised me with reservations... First of all we couldn't sit out side patio was closed, second we couldn't sit by the fire because there was a meeting, third we are not allowed to sit upstairs because its only reserved for large party's. I ask if there's any large party reservations this evening, no. So we sit down and are not happy with where were sitting, menu is the exact same as a year ago!! Nothing new and seasonal? So we decided to leave not giving a chance to effect my night any further! Got up noone asked why we were leaving or had came to offer drinks, went to Waldo on king! Amazing in every way.... Will never spend another dime at black trumpet!

Romantic environment. You pay for the environment and food.
Service is good.
Food can be expensive, but there are other options on the menu that won't break the bank.

Its food! But its food served on a fancier plate!. Eating in a high budget establishment with a personal low budget had me choosing between the pasta's, but I was not let down. You could tell why the Black Trumpet has been able to continually charge the prices they do; the better quality ingredients, soft atmosphere, and on point staff.

Tasteful and elegant. The new-age, exotic decor is elegant and comfortable - we had a street-side window seat that made for a romantic setting. The menu options didn't reflect the decor so much - we enjoyed the chicken and steak. The steak was cooked appropriately to order, the chicken was a generous portion in a tasty cream sauce. The food quality is very good, the service professional and the decor is elegant. We will be back.

On point. Took my girlfriend here for her birthday and got the total VIP experience. Food and service were both top notch.

Completely Ignored. I made a reservation at the Black Trumpet at the end of January, it was my husband's birthday and I wanted to take him somewhere he had never been before but I had tried and enjoyed.

We arrived at 6:55 and were seated in the front room with 2 other tables. Ice water and menus were provided. We were not asked for a drink order, we were not asked if we had any questions, we were not ever acknowledged by the waitress after we were seated. This waitress was in and out of the room on at least 5 separate occasions and we could not so much as catch her eye.

At 7:25, 25 minutes after being seated I told my husband we were leaving. On our way out I explained to a waiter who was in the service room that we had been sitting for 25 minutes and had not even had a drink order taken, and that we were leaving.

I gave my phone number with the reservation and as such I expected some kind of follow up to this unfortunate experience - no call was received. I sent an email - no response was received. We are busy professionals and I consider my time a valuable resource, I will always read up on a restaurant before deciding to spend an evening there. Now it is my turn to provide some feedback that may save someone else from terrible service. This experience was more than disappointing.

Membership Strongly Suggested. Anyone walking on London's Richmond Street in the vicinity of St. Peter's Cathedral will hardly notice an old building on the west side of the street. There is little colour to attract one's attention, other than black, and no advertisement other than a small sign mounted high on the wall. Upon closer inspection, the dark black facade reveals a wide opening ... with a rarely used seat for you to rest your tired feet - only then, will you notice a door at the side.

Venturing inside, one is presented with a very dark lobby area reminiscent of a gentleman's club. But this is the Black Trumpet restaurant.

There is not always a maitre'd, but an attentive waiter will soon offer a variety of seating choices: A front room that seems quite dark but is, in fact, sufficiently well lit; other areas, on two levels are also available; An area with a brighter ambience offers, through a glass wall, a view of the kitchen, enabling one to watch the chef play with his flambe recipes - but this could be a distraction.

On a warm summer day, one should be led to a wonderful garden at the rear of the restaurant. It is astonishing to walk through the restaurant into the brightness and shade of an Asian-accented garden - the colours of teak wood, artfully placed bamboo, stone carving, and waterfalls providing a welcome bathing place for the local birds. I had a strong wish to buy the place, convert it into a home, and spend the rest of my life in the garden ... in the summer, of course.

For lunch, our appetizers were pan-seared calamari, lemon dill beurre blanc, and roasted garlic potato soup, herb oil and crispy frittes. Our entrees were a New York steak, frittes, buttered asparagus, exotic mushroom bourbon demi sauce, and a seafood linguine comprising baby clams, shrimps and scallops, spinach, tomato, in a white wine cream sauce. I searched my mind for something to criticize - everything was cooked perfectly and presented expertly. Perhaps the decaffeinated coffee could be improved, but that may be like complaining about the ticking of the clock in a Rolls-Royce.

I suggest that membership of this 'club' will be rewarding.

Wonderful experience. The food was great, the atmosphere was beautiful, and the service was great.

Very nice restaurant. Dependable. Great place to entertain friends.

For appys, we all shared the seafood sausage. This was aiiiiight…nothing special. It was a bit salty, and in the end, I think I ate more of the onions that came with appetizer than the appetizer itself. It was still early on in the meal, so I decided to w
