I really enjoyed my experience here a few weeks ago! I'm from New Zealand and Fish and Chips is a staple so was very excited to find an authentic fish and chip shop here. The English owner was super friendly and helped us figure out how much to purchase for the number of people we had. He asked if we'd ever had curry with our chips. I said it's not something that we do in New Zealand. He popped some curry in a small separate container for us to try for free - we found it when we arrived home and thought it was a really thoughtful touch. We really enjoyed our meal, and pretty good price too. We will DEFINITELY be going back. :)
Whitbies is the Westside's little slice of the UK 🇬🇧. Their fish and chips are as authentic as you are going to find in beef country. They're a fish and chips shop and don't pretend to be anything else. The bonus is the selection of UK imports...the packaging even has the pound sterling price printed on it so you know it's the real deal.
Almost everyone in the region has heard of this little fish & chip shop, after it made it into the news saved just in the nick of time from having to close down, I'd even heard of it out in BC but had never had a chance to try it. We were going on a vacation out of town and decided to stop here for lunch, for a nice hearty fish n chip basket in the first leg of what would end up being a 13 hr drive.
It's a cute little shop, clean and bright. You walk in and are hit with the smell of fresh fish & chips (clean and tasty, no stale old over-used oil smell like you get in a lot of places). Derek had the 2pc Cod and I had the 2pc Haddock lunch special. There are only a handful of tables but we had the place to ourselves since it was still early. We picked a table along the wall where we could look at the neat treats and souvenirs they have on display. It didn't take long to get the fish and chips even though they're all cooked per order.
They arrived crispy but not overcooked and had a nice golden colour to the batter (always a concern - nobody likes rock-hard batter). Both types of fish inside their batter shells were juicy and tender, falling apart easily. The tartar sauce was delicious and uniquely spiced with a freshness that makes me think it was made in-house.
All in all, it's a tad out of the way for us here in Calgary but I'd eat there again if we're in the area for sure!
Very tasty fish & chips! The wait time is a little long due to the large spike in popularity, however, that's the price of delicious local food made in front of you. Support local!

We went here on Good Friday - apparently it is a Newfie tradition. They had a sign up that only cod and haddock was available that day given the high demands of the day. Totally fine with us! We ordered the family pack and ate in with our three young children. They were very accommodating with finding us seating, the food came out so quickly and I felt the service was wonderful!
The fish and chips were delicious, albeit not something I would eat everyday but not super greasy and very good hot. It comes with sides and we picked one of each - the coleslaw was pretty good, the kids went crazy for the beans, I'm not big on mushed peas, but I could see how it might be tasty to some.
The only thing I wished they had was lemon slices. While I'm sure the vinegar is more traditional, I thought some lemon wedges would have been a good option.
Overall, a nice experience and great food, highly recommended!
Yum!. Better and better every time I come! The food has reached perfection.
Love Whitbies!. Best fish and chips in town! Good price. Fast, friendly service! We would highly recommend them!
Perfect food. Great people working.
Coming from England this is the best fish and chips I have ever eaten, I might even go as far as saying it's better than the fish and chips from the old country ... Service was great food was exceptional I will definately recommend it to all my friends, family and people who are just looking for a great hot delicious plate of fresh fish and chips.. Home made batter, tartar, coleslaw, mushy peas, all the great flavors and more! Great atmosphere and the owner is a GREAT old fella, he let me sample all the foods I miss from England... Definately come check this place out ... You won't be disappointed
.. Whaddya waitin for???
A little pricey. The battered fish is delicious. A little greasy, but they're deep fried so what do you expect? Lol. The tar tar was good. Deep fried mushrooms are very much over priced for how little you get.. But they tasted good. The fries, I'm not a fan of at all. I eat only a couple and toss them. I like the variety of drinks you can choose from. As this is the only exclusive 'fish and chips' place I've gone to in leth, I can't compare it to anywhere else. However - I like Moxies fish and chips more lol. But this place is good :) very friendly, family run. Have only eaten here a handful of times bc it's very fattening/greasy lol.
Amazing!. Love the fish, and the service! I have eaten here a handful of times, and each time is delicious. The couple that own the place are very warm and friendly. I feel like I'm eating at my grandparents house! Negative reviews must be oddities, because this is one of the best places I have ever eaten!
Very good fish. The Lady is always friendly and happy and the fish is the closest you'll get to real UK fried fish. Fries are fries what can be said about that. I always get the cod & it's moist not greasy like you'd think since it's deep fried and the batter is crispy. I don't mind that the price is a bit high but the quality of the fish is what you're paying for. I hope they stay in business a long time!
