Review Mandarin Restaurant - Kingston

Ruth S.
I was actually surprised of how the restaurant has improved. The staff is friendly, the food tastes better than when I first visited. The potions are alright for the price. Our May 2022 visit was a bit on the disappointing side. It was a buffet. However, some of the dishes were not tasting fresh. They seemed to have been leftovers from the previous night. I know this because we were among the first batch of Sunday morning.

Food quality was really good, worth the price. Very nice staff and environment was so welcoming. We took our toddler and she was so excited to see the fishes in the aquarium and the little fountain.

Very clean and the decor was fabulous. The server Jackie that took care of our table was very attentive to us and every table she was serving as well as her support staff were very helpful. They took extra precautions when it came to the buffet and everyone had to wear disposable, one time use gloves before approaching the very well stocked and very varied buffet tables and once back at our table there was always someone nearby to take away the gloves as soon as we took them off to eat. No masks are required, although some patrons did have them on and the tables are fairly spaced apart so as to not feel crowded. I highly recommend this restaurant and will be returning to dine there in the near future

We have been getting takeout from Mandarin every couple of months for the last few years, and sadly the quality has been going downhill to the point where we had to simply discard a large portion of the family dinner we got. What we hoped were isolated incidents are now a confirmed trend and we will no longer patronize this establishment. Lately the eggrolls have consistently been just a soggy mess, the chow mein was severely overcooked to the point the bean sprouts were mushy and no longer white, and it tasted objectionable. The spare ribs tasted old, the chicken balls were stale and the fried rice was overcooked and mushy. If they can't get fried rice right, we no longer have any hopes of taking out a decent meal from here, especially for the price.

We went to Mandarin this past Sunday Night. Very disappointed with the buffet. I feel the quality of the food has gone down. The prime rib was rare, almost blue. The guy said he could cook it on the charbroiler, however if they just cooked it until medium rare it would be enjoyable. The deep fried items on the buffet had an appearance of being cooked in old oil, and tasted like it too. For the price 35.99 per adult we will order takeout somewhere else and get fresh hot food. You have lost us as customers.

It was good but feel it was better before the pandemic. Used to cut a larger slice of Prime Rib then they did this time around. I realize price of everything has gone up so I'm sure it's effecting them too. To go again I'd go during the normal week as cheaper than the weekend.

Great service. Glad to have the Buffet open again. Very attentive staff. Very clean. Great selection of food. Great quality food from Carving Station to regular Chinese food items to large salad bar to large dessert table 14 different types of ice cream a number of seafood items on the buffet as well.

For a Chinese buffet place, this place is great. The vsriety of food is anazing, from the choices of main dishes, salads, soup s, fruits and desserts. The price is on a high side. $27 before tax and tips. The service was great.

I don't usually give buffet restaurants high ratings but the staff at Mandarin are superb. After being seated, we were handed warm towels and were told about the special dishes of the day on the buffet islands.

Our waiter was super nice and the waitresses who'd clear our plates were also polite and always smiling.

The food is good too considering it is buffet food but one of the better quality buffets!

I'd recommend this place!
No vegan options. Veg options extremely limited make this not worth the money for those who choose not to eat animals. Decor was nicely done but will not be back.

This was the first time I been to the Kingston location. The place is clean. But the food was dry especially the salmon and chicken, I was there around 7pm, maybe they didn't want to make more cause they close at 9:30pm. Even the mango pudding was dry. Staff is great. I'd still come back but at an earlier time.

Ordered honey garlic chicken wing but got ribs. Ordered black pepper steak Ho-Fen, but the rice noodle all stick together. Well, the taste is OK, but they should be able to do it better. Also the mandarin combination fried rice seems pretty plain.

Food: Being a chain buffet restaurant, the food is actually decent. There's a wide assortment of items to fit most tastes, though I wouldn't be upset to see more vegan options--especially sushi and desserts.
Value: Very reasonable.
Service: The service at this location is excellent! The servers are extremely polite and attentive. You will also be thanked for your patronage numerous times by the hosts and manager.
Décor: The décor is very fun, vibrant, new, and well maintained. Of particular note, the restaurant is extremely clean! The washrooms are immaculate and there is always staff cleaning and maintaining the premises.

Bottom line: Decent for what it is.

We have been fans of this restaurant chain for awhile , but had to travel to Toronto area to visit before. Was not disappointed, very clean and although it was very busy -it is large enough as to not have huge lineups at the different stations. We will definitely go back , in the fall there is one opening up in Ottawa 😃
