Review Tango Nuevo - Kingston

Jessica Haddad
My husband and I went for an East Coast Rd. trip for our honeymoon and on the way back before heading back to Ontario we decided to make it 2 night stop at Kingston. We saw that tango Nuevo had really good reviews and I honestly love Mexican cuisine! I will tell you this was not what I expected! The menu was tapas but the variety of the food (around the world, not Mexican) is just amazing! Trying so many restaurants this was by far our most favorite! We talk about it to this day! The spices that they use in their dishes is a Pleasant explosion to your taste buds and everything just melts in your mouth. Let’s not forget the alcohol that espresso martini is just delicious! Highly highly recommended if you’re ever in Kingston to book a place there. The staff was even so nice to give us a call the day of to let us know that we were coming in an hour before the last call that we were more than welcome to come in earlier so that we can benefit from the whole experience! Wonderful service, delicious food and the most romantic, rustic and peaceful environment

Nice ambience and flavourful food but it's expensive. Tapas are usually small portion size dishes so you might have to order 2-3 dishes to make a meal and a better option would be to share. The service and server were great. One of the few restaurants where I found the server was honest and really knew about the menu and cocktails. Overall a good place to try not much for vegetarians there though.

I got everything I was hoping for from my Saturday night dinner here. An authentic tapas experience, great service, and a great atmosphere. If you want the recommended 2-3 tapas per person you'll be paying $20-30 for each one. Get only 2 if you want dessert, I was really full after 3. Also be prepared to tip, the staff was outstanding in everyway and seemed genuinely enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We were lucky enough to get David who is definitely a fan of the menu himself and just nailed it with his recommendations for both the food and drink.

Absolutely outstanding! This is now one of our very favourite restos. The food is to die for - amazing! The service was also top notch. I only wish I were dining here again tonight ;)

Unique and delicious tapas on the downtown main street patio. Went on the weekend for a family birthday because it's a family favourite location. As before, it lived up to our high expectations. Lots of variety and unique choices. Prices are higher than average for tapas, but maybe not surprising given the quality and location. Expect to order 2 dishes per person. Patio seating is covered with clear plastic roofing and also has side curtains. It's a busy location but service was great, being quick and polite. TIP: Make reservations. Parking lots around the area and also on the street a short walk away.

Really enjoyed this spot. They have both indoor and outdoor seating which are modern and nicely designed. Our server was very friendly and sparked up a lot of conversation. She also explained the menu to us and gave us quite a few recommendations. The menu is all shared tapas with a fusion of Arabic and Latin foods. Between 3 people we got 6 tapas and 2 desserts and were full by the end. Our favourite tapas were the lamb and the kibbeh- definitely must tries! We will most likely return here on our next visit to Kingston.

OVERVIEW: Fantastic! It's worth the money, service is great, and many options for various dietary restrictions. I can feel confident about giving Tango Nuevo a five-star as they exceed my expectations by a lot. AMBIANCE: Dimly lit chill vibes, some classy music selections. Would have loved a table, but the bar area is nice as well. SERVICE: Quick and respectful. The bartender talked to me for a bit about some of their selections and we discussed scotch and Mézcal. SELECTION: There's a great food selection. I'm used to only eating 1 or 2 things on a menu due to restrictions, but they provide vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options with a well-marked menu. I always appreciate this from restaurants! For drinks they do lots of cocktail / mix drinks. I tried my fiancee's drink and it was fantastic. If you're looking for a wide array of spirits, they don't have too much here, however what they do have is top-notch. They had some hard to find Lagavulin and Profesor Mézcal when I went. TASTE: Wonderful, we loved everything we ordered and even ordered more. I'm not a food critic, but the taste of the dishes are worth going back for, and worth making a reservation here.

Delicious tapas and excellent service. The lavender lemonade was very floral and refreshing. My favorite dish was the avocado tartare which had a nice fresh zing from the lime & jalapeño vinaigrette. It paired well with the salty Queso Y Chorizo, and the spiciness of the Tuna Poke Nachos (slight heat from the Sambal aioli). The wonton crisps that came with the Tuna and the Avocado tapas were perfectly crisp and were a great vehicle for toppings. Thanks to the team for making our visit a very enjoyable experience!

The portion sizes were perfect for me, however some may find the cost of 'dinner' a bit pricey. Avg plate price =~$10 Recommended # of plates = 2-3 / person + drinks, coffee/tea, dessert. The food was excellent in my opinion! Wonderful flavours! The noise-level was quite high, unfortunately. The ambiance was wonderful otherwise.

I wanted to do this a few months ago but totally forgot... Tango Nuevo is an amazing establishment with an incredible menu and world class staff. We made reservations to have our wedding reception there and they went far above and beyond our expectations. Everything was served in a timely manner, and everyone was so impressed by the exquisiteness of the meal. They definitely have my recommendation for best restaurant in Kingston and will definitely be in again soon. Thank you so much to the owner and staff! You made our reception go off without a hitch :)

Food was amazing (as always!). Our server went above and beyond to guide myself through the menu providing me with vegan options/accommodations. The atmosphere and music were on point, adding to the whole experience. One of our favourite spots, we will always return.

Classy atmosphere, warm welcome, interesting & thoughtful menus. We shared a few dishes starting with a charcuterie board which was a lovely presentation. The stand outs were carne picante, scallops & patatas bravas. I really enjoyed my sweet basil lemonade & my party loved their wine. Considering the quality, everything was priced well. Will absolutely return!

This is definitely not a tapas restaurant. It serves appetizer-size and "small plate" size dishes. Only 3 or 4 of these dishes are Spanish. These 4 dishes are all deep-fried, so they don't adequately represent real Spanish tapas or Basque pinxtos. The 3 we had were: patates bravas with garlicky mayo (not as good as most we've had and some of the potato pieces were undercooked in the middle), breaded calamari with garlicky mayo (pretty good), and really delicious deep-fried chevre balls with honeyed fig compote.

We thought the food was somewhat over-priced for what we got. The most egregious was the 4-to-a-plate deep-fried chevre balls, which were the size of grapes (i.e., they weren't croquettes as advertised). Delicious, yes, but expensive.

My husband's rioja was fine, price-wise, but I felt seriously ripped off by my 2 one-ounce glasses of sherry. I checked the LCBO website the next day, and the more expensive of my sherries - for which I had paid $6 for a one ounce glass - costs $26 for a 750-ml bottle at the LCBO. I'll do the arithmetic for you. That works out to about $1/fluid ounce at the LCBO. If we assume a 150% to 200% mark-up on alcohol in a restaurant, then the most I should have been charged was $2. But I was charged $6! And frankly, I've never had a restaurant serve me a single ounce of sherry before; usually they serve 2 or 3 ounces. As I say, I felt ripped off.

Pricey, but worth it. Between two people we had 5 different menu items, all of which we both enjoyed. I highly recommend the Persian Lamb BBQ tacos - I'd have it without the pickles, but they are fabulous either way!! The lamb is nice and tender , I ate the extra bits by itself. Sauce is not heavy on the garlic (wish it had a bit more). Mekong spring rolls are a must try, the sauce definitely compliments the spring rolls very well. As a fan of spicy foods I did enjoy the kick to it. Other items we had were the pan seared scallops ( good but nothing special), fish tacos, and meatballs. Also had their Berry cheesecake, which was yummy but not very different from others.

We were 4 of us which is perfect for tapas and sharing. We tried several dished and all of them were super flavourful and satisfying. We tried the calamari, spring roles, sambal shrimp, shrimp & Muskie green curry, short ribs and we ended with the charcuterie plate. Everything was delicious!! We washed it down with a couple bottles of red wine and had a great evening. The atmosphere and staff are equal fantastic. Can't wait to go back!!

Great drinks and great atmosphere. Did not try the food. Sat at the bar both nights to enjoy some great drinks. Bartenders (different both nights) were big great. Great selection of drinks, and food looked great. The bathrooms were beautiful and clean.

The different apprtizers they offer are delicious! Their sangrias are my favourite. I had scallops last time I went and they were amazing. Will be returning.

Super yummy food and great atmosphere! It's on the pricier end for a reason! Their Sangria is yummy and I recommend it! I really liked the scallops and the mussels. They are usually always busy so I recommend getting a reservation or going a bit early!

Food was delicious from start to finish. Fresh. Excellent presentation. Busy spot but relaxed atmosphere. Our waitress Maggie was attentive and friendly without overdoing it. We'll be back for sure.

The lighting can make it difficult to see at times, as it is typically quite dark. The ingredients are bought local, and the food is high quality. It is a bit on the pricier side, especially considering the portion sizes, but worth it. I don't find the staff are always the friendliest, it can be hit or miss.

The sangria is very good!

great patio and ambiance for the summer time to catch up over drinks and some light dishes. interesting tapas, a bit pricy, but loved the avocado fries!

Love tapas, love this place. I like how I get to try many things here. There are so many good dishes that it's hard to choose my favorite, although some stand outs are the eggplant tapenade (so tasty), duck confit flat bread and the lamb tacos. The place is classy, dimly lit, and is a perfect place for a date. One thing to note is that it is quite pricey for the amount of food.

Visiting in Kingston and my daughter recommended this tapas restaurant for lunch. It was wonderful. The ambiance is dark and quiet. 1:30 on a Tuesday there was lots of seating and we had a wonderfully friendly server who treated us like queens. Wish we had asked his name as he deserves the extra mention. We both started with a glass of white wine - Pinot Grigio- and then each selected 2 tapas. I chose Aguacates Fritos (crispy avocado fingers with Tomato-Orange relish) and Chorizo Patata Bravas (Crispy potatoes with chorizo, roasted red pepper & aged Cheddar cheese, served with a spicy Piri Piri aioli). My daughter chose Portobello Mushroom V (roasted Portobello on flatbread with sun-dried tomato pesto, roasted cherry tomatoes, basil & a balsamic glaze, topped with goat cheese) and Asian Spare Ribs (Tender pork ribs with a ginger, soy, honey & anise glaze). All were wonderful, but I voted the chorizo as my favourite all around, but the ribs the most unique and unexpected. The strong anise flavoured glaze gave these ribs a totally different flavour note that made my taste buds stand up and take notice. A definite must eat here if you're in town. Forgot my phone to take pics, but snagged a few on the internet. Only one missing is the Avocado fingers.

Great food. Mussels were awesome. The only big problem I have with this place is that after spending the same amount I would on any nice meal, I wasn't even full and my fiance was practically still starving. Very delicious, but too expensive for such small portions. It's just not practical.

Had heard great things - atmosphere is great. Server was good. Bartender was rude - the bar was NOT busy and when we asked him for a drink at the bar (a shot that my friend and I traditionally do on our rare nights out together), he RUDELY stated "Are you at that table? I'll send it over there, I'm busy making these cocktails." Never have I had any bartender tell me this - if there are two people at the bar or fifty. Not impressed.

Excellent food! Very yummy and tasty tapas. A nice evening out with good food and atmosphere. Pricy but worth it. Make a reservation as they are busy!

The best? - It could be..... Went there in September and was so darned good we went both nights.....

Staff - excellent, accommodating, friendly.
Food - perfect portions, delicious, perfectly spiced. Very reasonable for the quality and size.
Atmosphere - very cool old vibe, loved the old movies playing.
Drinks - great selection of drinks and beers, good wines at all price points.

Overall a 5 star rating. We were very well received and had a wonderful time. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a higher scale dining experience in downtown Kingston. Whether for a gnosh or a full meal, do not miss this gem just off Market Square.

The atmosphere , staff , music, decor and FOOD were all Excellent. I spend 150 + nights a year on the road and rarely do I find a restaurant as perfect as Tango Nuevo.....nice job ! I 'll be back!

Delicious food, cool atmosphere!. Hard to choose there are so many interesting dishes. The food was amazing and the service as well. The owner is a great guy! You must eat here if you come to Kingston.

What a lively spot for great drinks and a tapas style meal with lots of variety. Just a word to the wise - don't sit in the back corner as it can get pretty stuffy. Martini portions could have been more generous. We enjoyed shrimp fritters, ceviche (very light and fresh), calamari, Asian ribs, lemon shrimp, mini empanadas (nice flaky pastry) and they were all served with side dips and sauces. Would return again but sit kn the patio!

Beautiful place. The drinks are awesome, a lot of variety. Great atmosphere an friendly staff. Highly recommended from a tourists point of view. My husband and I went there on a late Friday night for drinks, loved it!

Without a doubt...my new favourite restaurant!. Incredible! Delicious food, fantastic service, and great wine.
The food was fresh, flavourful and beautifully presented. We had a relaxing evening, enjoying the atmosphere and service.
We will be back - and often!

A bit pricey!. Took my SO here last night for his b-day after reading the fantastic reviews. This was our first visit here and sad to say I was a bit disappointed. Service itself was very good as well as the wait time, and we never felt rushed. However the tapas are overpriced and not as tasty as I had hoped. There was a limited selection of full meals as they were out of a few things. I ended up have the turkish ravioli and the stuffed chicken rolls. Both were very small portions considering they cost me $11 and $13. I really couldn't believe how little there was! My SO's had the Swedish Burger with Caesar Salad and Sweet Potato Fries. The burger and the salad were smaller than we expected. I ended up eating some of his fries as the two tapas just wasn't enough for a meal. This was the only food item that I thought was perfectly done. The tapas were disappointing in taste and quality.

However, the ambiance was perfect and romantic with the soft lighting and the wonderful spanish style music that wasn't too loud. It was also tastefully decorated and comfortable. Based on these few good points I will not be returning!

I visited Kingston recently and ended up eating at Tango Nuevo. What a great find! The atmosphere and design were stylish and cool and reminded me of NYC. Our server, a red-headed French girl was professional and fun and had great recommendations for food and wine. And the tapas were fantastic! I am a Turk living and working in New York and Tango Nuevo's Turkish Ravioli (mantı in Turkish) was as good as I've had in any Turkish restaurants there. Other favourites were the Carne Piquante and the Zesty Lemon Shrimp. Presentation, decor and music were all excellent-- I wish I were in Kingston more often so that I could frequent this gem of a restaurant!

Muy Bien!!. I've travelled to many places during my younger years and have been looking for something that reminds me anything near Latin food. The typical, mexican restaurants just dont cut it for me.....yes, I'm picky, however, this place when I went in with some friends we tried several dishes on the menu and with the selection of wine, it brought back great memories. Thank you for great food, but also having a great atmosphere and bringing back the taste that I've craved for some time. Hope to stop in when passing by Kingston.

Excelente experiencia!. What an excellent and amazing place! We dined with bunch of friends recently and enjoyed every minute of it. Myself travelling from Europe and to find this marvelous restaurant with delicious meal and great service and vibe was fantastic!!!! Keep up a great job!

This could be a great restaurant but the price of the items for the quantity of food served is outrageous. As an example, we ordered the guacamole, for $9 we got about half a cup of of it with about 8 taco chips. The picante beef, at $11 was quite tasty, but in total there were about 6 - 1" square bits. The chicken empanadillas were awful, 4 tiny deep fried but soggy things with a tiny bit of chicken (and nothing else) inside. I think they were around $10. I don't mind paying for well prepared food but paying $50 for 2 coffees and food that would barely cover 1/4 of a dinner plate is ridiculous.

We WILL be returning here - and often!. For an impromptu meal, this turned out to be a marvelous experience. Four of us ordered a large number of different plates of tapas and other offerings, and shared them. Each was outstanding. In fact, one of them, a sandwich, was rated 'the best I've ever eaten'. Delighted to find Tango Nuevo and have a feeling we'll become 'regulars'.

Awesome new tapas restaurant. Kingston now has a world class tapas restaurant. My family and guests dined there last week and we tried out approximately 15 menu items, and truth be told we had a hard time deciding our favorites, as they were all excellent. Since we had 5 repeat orders for the Carne Picante, I would have to say that was the favorite, although some in group raved about the mussels. Great ambience and terrific service from our waitress, Melissa, who enthusiastically recommended her favorites. Pitchers of sangria were perfect.

A New Groove in Downtown Kingston.... Kingston's newest restaurant is amazing! The tapas are fresh and delicious (we tried and loved nearly everything on the menu-- but the ceviche and guacamole are especially good), the wine selection is great, the service is excellent and the decor is gorgeous. It is a fantastic spot for a night out... and I can't wait to go back for lunch on the patio! Tango Nuevo is my new favourite restaurant!

We held a family get together at Tango Nuevo last week, and were blown away by the vibe, the service, the decor, the food (mushrooms for me, please! Also, the churros - mmm!) and the creative cocktails. A great debut for a terrific new spot. GO AT ONCE!

Compared to the scallops, for $1 more – why not get the Biftec a la Plancha ($14)? Not only was the presentation amazing, this steak cooked to medium-rare was delicious because it was so thinly and evenly sliced. Not only that, the Espagnole sauce is way better than any other steak sauce.
