Review Yamato Asian Dining - Kelowna

Ryan L
Had some delicious sushi and a chicken rice bowl. Dinner was fabulous as usual. Update: We had Yamato cater for a large group. Excellent experience!

Yamato has had the best dim sum in Kelowna for years and my last visit it had only gotten better! Great portions, lots of variety, and delicious green tea to finish it off. Not to mention their regular sushi menu is also amazing - and their red curry! Quick friendly service make it really an amazing place to eat with something that will satisfy everyone!

^value for money and generous portion the best Yang Chow fried rice i've ever had in Canada^

definitely the best asian food in Kelowna. Lived here for 10 years, finally ordered delivery today, very impressed. not usually a review guy but needed to help bump them up closer to 5-stars because this is the best option in Kelowna for sure. all the sushi was great, wor wonton soup was so good. Everything seemed really fresh and prepared very well

The food was excellent. We are new to Kelowna and we have now found our favourite sushi restaurant. Fresh, great portions. Recommend 100%

I stopped by for lunch and was surprised. The ice coffee was great and I believe they use Vietnamese coffee and the salt and pepper squid was excellent. I will return.

The food is good, but not outstanding and fairly expensive. The service was definitely good, but again, not great. The atmosphere is pretty generic, but decent. I do eat here fairly often with my pops as we both like Asian food and Yamato has a good selection of foods from across Asia. I do struggle with the pricing though, $18 for a rice noodle dish with tofu and some shredded veg is very high - I would say this would be okay if it was presented beautifully or the atmosphere was unique or the service was absolutely top notch, but I'm afraid not. I can make this same dish at home for $4 or less in 15 minutes so it's hard to spend $18 plus tax plus tip which comes to about $25. When minimum wage is $15 per hour this is almost 2 hours of work to pay this off!!!

We enjoyed the food here ever since we were introduced by my husband! The teppanyaki is always awesome and the sushi?!? OMG! I love those!! Always!!

So far the best Malaysian curry I have tasted. Serving is huge and at a reasonable price!!

I came in t close to closing. It must be close to authentic. I could not read the menu. The server helped me choose my meal and it was good. I chopsticked the appetizer but brought me, a requested fork, for the main course.

First time trying Yamato and will definitely be coming back !! Excellent menu selections, lots of vegetarian choices, something for everyone !! Friendly staff, great service 😊

We go with the family, food is good, if you know what you want. Hard to understand, so getting a good information, is hard.
El B
Great selection of food, pretty much any Asian cuisine is found here. Vietnamese, Japanese, Malaysian etc. even Indian food. The place was clean and the people working there welcoming.

Service was good, I really enjoyed their laksa soup and dynamite rolls. Prices are very reasonable. Very friendly staff.

Can't go wrong coming to Yamato, from the staff to the food they have it all and the quality is like no other if your looking for a place to eat this is it!
Try the chicken wings or pad thai (that's what i usually get) but really everything is good!
On weekends they have great Dim-sum which is a must go just for the experience!

OMG! We moved from Vancouver to Salmon Arm and haven't found a really good Asian restaurant. This place is freakin' great. This atmosphere is good and the food is great! We will definitely travel from Salmon Arm to Kelowna to visit here again. We love it.

Came here to fill our dimsum cravings. The food tastes OK but the portion and prices aren't very good. Comparing it to the dim sum we normally have, it is very small. What usually comes as three to four pieces, only comes as two here. There is a cart that goes around that mainly has the steamed items. It came around a few times, but had the same things which I guess are the most popular ones. There is also a tray of the deep fried foods that goes around as well. You can also order off the menu if the items you want aren't there. There were a few things we wanted to order, but they didn't have, which was kind of disappointing.

We tried quite a few dishes. We tried the beancurd, sticky rice, eggplant and shrimp, pan fried prawn and chive dumpling, beef shortrib, and beef tendon and tripe. They all actually tasted alright. The beef shortrib was disappointing though because it really was just two pieces, with one piece barely having any meat on it. The beef tendon and tripe was an OK size, but it needed more flavour. The beancurd was probably my favourite and was a decent size.

Honestly, I don't think I'd come back unless I really wanted dimsum. At least this place offers it and has some choice in the items. But for the amount of money I paid, I'd rather eat somewhere else.

Poor service, extremely rude waitress. She got our bills wrong, and they didn't even give my friend the salad she ordered it never came, yet still charged her for it. Kept trying to rush us out. The food was horrible chicken in sweet slimy sauce, pink looking and nasty. My friend said her sushi smelled like the fish was off. And to top it all off I now have food poisoning from that lunch, and I just had the chicken teriyaki rice box. Horrible place.
El Guapo
Awesome dim sum (with an actual cart going around), fantastic sushi (try the exotic roll) and Vietnamese (such good spring rolls) all under the same roof with a clean and inviting decor! What's not to love about this place? You can eat several different types of well prepared and delicious Asian food at once. I wish I could eat here everyday!
Boston Cream Pie
Excellent Dim Sum. We have been searching for a Dim Sum Restaurant that is as good as the ones found in Edmonton and now we have found it!
The food was excellent!
The only thing is that the lady behind the till (may be the owner?) could be a little nicer when you enter and maybe try a proper greeting and seem happy that you chose to come to her restaurant. The servers were very nice and polite though.
I hope this restaurant lasts on its good food because it would be sad to have it disappear due to impoliteness.

Unreliable service. When we called three days before our wedding to confirm our catering, the owner "Don" said he did not have our order. He said he just got home from vacation in Hawaii so he forgot. Even though we sat down in his restaurant and talked about the meal plan three weeks prior to this call. He ensured us he did this all the time for the local schools and it would be no problem. The food we have tried there (only as takeout though, we have never eaten in the dining room) was really good so this was disappointing.

Horrible, over priced bad sushi. Terrible service, I was treated with incredible disrespect. The server got my order wrong and then over charged me for my meal. I got up to check on the other items I had ordered to find out the server had not put them through. (I had ordered a combination) Instead of saying sorry or not saying anything, she blamed me for ordering wrong and then over charged me. I looked at the menu after and realized that the combination I had ordered did indeed come with a miso soup and there for I should not have had to pay for it. I have been many times as it was the only restaurant near my house that served sushi. I no longer go to this sushi place and now bus or walk more then three times the distance to get sushi because Yamato was so terrible.

Middle. Not great not bad somewhere in the middle. With tough competition across the road I don't think I will come back.
Didn't try but it was nice to see selection of desserts.....

Dim Sum disaster. My husband and I have been there many times for weekend Dim Sum. The last five times, the service has gone from bad to worse. We decided to go there Sunday and thought if we got there early we might get better service. We arrived just before noon, and it took 20 minutes for the cart to finally come around. By the time it reached our table it was pretty depleted. The one server went around with a tray of deep fired items but kept going to the same sectiion over and over so no one on the other half saw any of these items. After 30 minutes and 1 item we finally just put in an order with the server for some rice noodle rolls. He came back 15 mins later to say they had run out. We left after 45 minutes, disappointed and hungry. We noticed quite a few talbles doing the same. it's a shame as the food is quite good, and they recently remodelled and the place looks much better. We will not be going back.

Good food, horrible service. Rude, un helpful and un organized when dealing with customers

The food was average but the service was TERRIBLE. My friend had GLASS in her food and the waitress didn't even apologize, just asked if she wanted any more. Never coming back here again.
APMS
Amazing food, good portions, consistent taste, however the service is never the same and borders on terrible, I have been to Yamato more than 25 times and have sworn to never go back due to the service 3 times, but like a GF I always end up back in the door.
Kayme
Good Sushi!. Good for Maki Rolls! Westside experience was way better then Kelowna. Westside has friendlier staff and a better atmosphere! :) Good place to get together with friends and share!

Jack of all Asian foods expert at none (West Kelowna location). Not sure why a restaurant serves Japanese, Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese if none of them are going to be prepared well....maybe if they just focused on one type of food it could be prepared carefully and taste delicious.
Vietnamese crepe was doughy and wet
Vietnamese bowls for $14.50 were not worth it...the pork is spam like with no flavours, the beef was dry and tough (fortunately it had flavour)....but way too pricey for rice noodles 1 spring roll and some cheap quality meat
The coconut red curry was just okay same with the sushi...
I won't go back for over priced mediocre food
Pho soc tran in town is way better for Vietnamese and there are tones of better sushi and Thai spots in town too
Kelowna Food
Food good, Service..well kinda crappy. I frequent this restaurant once a week. It is one of the best Japanese food restaurants in town. The service however is hit and miss usually a miss. The food is always fresh unlike some such as gengi and Ozeki. Best for lunch’ many business people know this.

Yamato Restaurant Kelowna. Crappy Service!!!!
Food was just alright - ordered drinks (never received them) along with appetizers + 2 soups - we were handed the bill after the appetizers! I had notified them about our missing soups - waited 20-25 min. Then I had to ask for the drinks to be removed off of the bill, to which she had to confirm this by looking at the table. NOT IMPRESSED!! They've lost my business forever.

I liked the variety. The sushi I had was good, but the dim sum was ok but not all dishes had same quality. The steamed shrimp dumplings were huge but the spicy squid wasn't fried long enough or the deep fryer wasn't set at the right temp since it was soggy not crispy. The Siew Mai dumplings were tasty and large. The sticky rice in the lily leaf was on the bland side. Chicken feet were flavorful & tender. I'd go again because there's many things on the menu I haven't tried.

Needs to step up. I've given this restaurant so many chances over the years and while it's just good enough to keep me trying it again, it really is only good due to it's convenience to the asian food store. There is really nothing done right here... the restaurant isn't spotlessly clean, it doesn't have fantastic hours, the service is mostly downright horrible and they try to cover so many cuisines that they rarely get anything just right. That might sound a little condemning but if you're looking for just-below average Kelowna quality in pan-Asian food you've come to the right spot!

My last two visits involved a substandard Pad Thai and a dim sum with a poor selection (brought around and around and around...seriously put something else out) and consisting mostly of items that one can purchase right next door for a quarter of the price and steam at home. Sure, there's value in going out for dim sum or a meal and having someone else prepare, serve and tidy up but there are so many better choices locally that deserve yours and my patronage.

Took the family for dinner last Saturday read some reviews but wanted to see for myself... And I am glad I gave it a chance! My family had sushi and a teriyaki dish while I had the red curry chicken!! I think it was the best curry I've ever had in Kelowna! And it came with yummy coconut rice :) servers were great, very helpful, and not too fancy. Will be back for sure!

Not authentic. Didn't like it...may be I will give it another chance.

Unhappy Customers. We had dinner at the West Kelowna location this past weekend. When we arrived we were told to seat ourselves. We waited 10 minutes and still no menus were brought to us. My friend grabbed the menus for the two of us and we proceeded to look through them. Another 10 minutes went by and still no waitress came to see us. Finally one of the waitresses walked up and asked if we would like to order. No one had even taken a drink order at this point. We ordered our drinks and asked her to come back in a minute. She did and we placed our order. When the food was dropped off the waitress left us without chopsticks. We waited for 5 minutes or so but no one walked anywhere near our section so we couldnt ask for service. My friend then got up and grabbed chopsticks from the front counter for us. Eventually another waitress came by to ask how we were doing. We said fine, even though we were incredibly unahhpy at this point. 30 seconds later our original waitress came by to see how we were doing. We started off with no waitresses and now we had two. After we finished eating we waited for our bill but, again, no one served us. We went to the front counter to pay and the lady there was incredibly irritable and rude. We were inconveniencing her by wanting to split the bill btw debit and cash. We paid and left incredibly unhappy!

Worst service ive ever experienced we were seated then waited 10 while the 2 others behind us were served first and had drinks on their table. We got our food and nothing we ordered was correct. The two tables around us were left dirty. We got up and left and all waitress said was have a good day with a glare. Left with empty stomachs and.unhappy. Good job yamato.

Very nice sushi rolls for a quite reasonably priced and light lunch.

Not worth the money. Have visited the Yamato restaurants in both Kelowna and West Kelowna. Have found at both restaurants that their rice is always under or overcooked for the sushi rolls and simply falls off of the seaweed paper while you are trying to eat it. For the price, it's not worth the money- there are better Asian/Japanese restaurants out there with better food. Can't complain about the service, although I have only gone at typically "slow" hours. I would eat there again, if there was no other sushi restaurant open, but I prefer to take my business elsewhere.

Great food but always understaffed. I love the food, the bubble tea, the monks curry. I am never disappointed but we have been going since the beginning and they are always understaffed. We get our food fast enough but I always feel bad because the waitresses are always working at capacity. I wish they would just add an extra person on to make the whole place run smoother.

Tasty and unique food.
JJ
Highly disappointed!. I ordered take out and I mentioned many times that I'm a vegetarian. I asked if the deep fried spring rolls had no meat in them and they confirmed. Once I got home, I took a bite of the spring roll and it had MEAT! I have been a vegetarian for a long time so you can imagine how furious I was! I called them up and the lady (I think the manager) kept saying it's 100% tofu (LIE!). My friends looked at the spring roll and can confirm that it's meat.

Because of this incident I will not return to this restaurant nor will I ever recommend it.

Definitely RECOMMENDED!!. Great Asian place in Kelowna! Beautiful atmosphere, fast service, decent prices, good food! I've lived and travelled in Asia and I definitely recommend this place! For something fun and delicious, try the Vietnamese Crepes!

First timer. Haven't tried visiting the restaurant, but tried the take-out yesterday. It was tasty, as arrived earlier than they said. The food quality was great, it was hot, fresh, and delicious. We will try them again, but I'm not so sure we'll visit, reviews in house are not inviting.

Just ate there earlier this afternoon and it was the worst service I've ever had at a restaurant. I've eaten there before with family and I don't remember the service being that horrible. First, we were seated by an older man but he brought no menus and told us our server would be there soon. So, we waited and waited. Then a guy came around with dim sum and we decided to get a couple of those but we didn't have any utensils so he grabbed us some. Then we told we also wanted to order and he told us we'd have to wait for our server who was still nowhere in sight. Long story short, everyone around us were getting their food ordered and drinks delivered EXCEPT US. When our server finally came she seemed confused and took a long time getting our tea and completely forgot about the water we also asked for. She also forgot to bring us our food. Another server had to ASK us if we still wanted our sushi!!! Are you kidding me?!?!? When the 2nd server (who was more professional and helpful) finally brought our food I discovered that the dynamite sushi I ordered had a bristle from a scrubbing pad for washing dishes. I was already angry about the lack of service before that but the bristle in the sushi took me over the edge. I told the owner about the bad service and she took off the sushi from the bill but the damage was done. Worst service ever and I won't be going back. The food wasn't worth the high price either. Major fail from beginning to end. I was so disappointed.

Amazing. A regular customer and will continue to be! Every time I go whether for dim sum or lunch, the food is amazing as well as the service.
Maela Bru
They have got to be the best option for dim sum in the city! With a traditional dim sum cart serving delicious steamed goodness every Saturday and Sunday from 11-2 get there early and expect a wait this place is popular for a reason! Yum!!

So me and my roommate ordered in from Yamato and we called at 3 pm and got our food at 4:15, and we were at the university, a 10 minute drive TOPS. Not only did it take forever but I asked for wild salmon and got regular salmon, my roommate got teriyaki chicken and basically it was just chicken fat and skin, and we also got salad rolls and the sauce tasted like expired nastiness and one of the salad rolls was broken open. Not recommended on my behalf.
Pac
My friend recommend me this restaurant, he said it was good food and fast service. so I come and try with my family last friday the food was good, but the service was horrible! after they give you a table you have to wait 15min. before they give you a menu. there not even ask you if you want something to drink. So we orderd sushi. The sushi was great, but again we have to wait about half hour before we get our food. So if you have a an hour or hour in half lunch break this is not the restaurant you should be, you don't have time to enjoy your food. the service was horrible!
Amanda
Great for take-out!. I highly recommend this restaurant, for take out. The rolls are huge, and the food is delicious. Since moving to Kelowna 4 months ago, we've had take-out from Yamato at least 5 times, and dined in once. The in-restaurant service is pretty terrible, but the food really is amazing, so we keep going back for take-out.

I highly recommend the Sumo maki roll, and the Pad Thai Curry is the best dish on the menu!

If you don't mind having slow, unfriendly service, by all means eat-in, but I prefer to enjoy the good food at home without snobby servers.
Brett
Gross!. First of all, the service was horrible! The server was very unfriendly and unprofessional. The food was way overpriced, and it was disgusting. I couldn't eat more than about 4 bites of it. What I ordered was the "chef's recommendation" (Birds nest). My girlfriend was unhappy with her meal as well. We felt like we were robbed it was so bad.
Dfamily7
Pho was ok. Sushi is alright. Atmosphere lacks, as it is located in a warehouse. A passable choice for a diverse Asian menu.
Holliewood
I visited Yamato for the first time over the weekend. The food was good, and the selection of dim sum was more than I expected to see. The service however was unfriendly and slow. The price was good - $4.50 for each dim sum item, not as cheap as you will find in Vancouver but I no longer have to drive to the coast for dim sum :)
Josh
Really good food for price. Tried sushi and also Tia food both awesome. Good work yamato. Will be back soon.

I'm rescinding my Like vote. Last time I went we received a dopey waitress who brought dirty cups and forgot my order completely.

-----09 Apr, 2011-----

A bit of Vancouver dining in Kelowna. Good quality sushi and modern fun interior. Polite swift service.
Demian Carson
Poor service. While I agree with the posts that the food is good, not great but good, the service leaves a lot to be desired. Me and my wife use to eat here, either in the restaurant or take out on a regular basis. However, since they got a new manager the service has gone downhill they constantly screw up our orders then the manager blames us for the mistake. If they forgot things for takeout the best they offer is to give us a free one next time we order. The final straw was after we ordered lunch my wife's meal came out first, after she had finished her meal, my meal arrived and it was cold and looked like it had been sitting for a while. When I mentioned this to the manager he said that sushi always comes out before the rest of the food, and when I mentioned that it was cold and had been sitting for a while he told us that he had just watched the chef just fry it up. They did not bother to discount any of our bill. We will never eat at this place again, and there is better sushi in Kelowna anyway. Try Mabui better sushi and service
Strattc
Best sushi in Kelowna!. Delicious, fresh, reliable and friendly, efficient service too! One of our favourite places for a quick lunch or dinner.
Jon
Went for dimsum. Good food, only issue would have to be the carts didn't go around often enough
Mo
Always good, all the time. The service is friendly and efficient; gone there 10 minutes before close and they are happy to still serve you. Cheap especially for portion size
HappyFish
One of My Lunch Favs!. This has to be one of my favourite places for Asian food, although I go mainly for the sushi.
It is reasonably priced and has a very diverse menu. It is also one of the few places in Kelowna to serve real Dim Sum (although only on Saturdays so far). The service is usually quite good, but I have found it inconsistent depending on your particular server. All in all -a great little spot that can meet the taste of a wide variety of people!
Steve K
The take out rolls I ordered were very tasty except the smoked salmon maki. Not fresh and I am pretty sure it was the flakes salmon in the can you buy at the grocery store.
David J
B - List. Good food, service and interesting decor with a very high ceiling. Ordered a sushi boat and soup for 4. Soup was very good. The boat was very good with enough variety. However, the sushi appeared to be rather small in size and kept coming apart. The service is good. They do try. The person at another table, however, returned a bottle of beer saying it was only half full. The server was at a loss to explain the difference. Strange but true. This would not be my first choice as a stop over for sushi. However, if you are hungry, this may just fill the void. Of note, the center of the floor space has a rug covering up a series of tiles that are missing making traversing this area potentially problematic. If you have elderly parents visiting beware of the hazard.
Steph
I disagree with cody... I have to say its about blood time we finally saw puch cart dim sum in KELOWNA, and for a sushi bar to bring it wonderful. if you would prefer to go to dinking old kens gross dim sum go for it... but yamato has good dim sum.. they charge more cause they can, cause they are th only ones with puch carts the real authentic way. So just cause you read one review on it dont dismiss yamato for dim sum. As i am going right now for dim sum!!!!
great place!!!!
Cody
Worst dim sum ive ever had, if you can call it that. almost inedible aside from the squid. Over priced under portioned, not too sure where these recipes came from. Great sushi on the other hand, they should stick to what they know
Kitty Lau
Yamato is advertised as an Asian restaurant. No specifics, like Chinese, Vietnamese, etc.. just Asian. This was evident as I glanced over the menu. There was everything from laksa, to dim sum, to Vietnamese salad rolls, to sushi. Whenever a restaurant has such a large variety like this, I'm immediately a bit skeptical of how they are able to pull everything off.
