Review Woodfire Bakery - Kelowna

BC Field Technician
Ate here more than a "few" times picked up a stack of subs for our staff a few times a year, they were always tasty. The service... well it's always been less than stellar, you ignore it because of the food. That hasn't changed, it's like they think any question is beneath them and you should consider yourself lucky to be there 😐 Definitely recommend the Chicken Cordon Sub! I took a skeptic with me and turned him into a believer! It's so busy for a reason 😉 Take out is better atmosphere

It took me years to get back here but this place continues to be amazing... Even with a lineup out the door they move you through efficiently without ever skipping on quality. Enjoyed a half-n-half on Kaiser (Chicken and Roast Beef) and it was absolutely delicious and filling. Without a doubt a must stop place for anyone in Kelowna.

Fantastic place to eat, authentic home style cuisine a must if you enjoy German Cooking 😋

The food was amazing. I had the half and half which was so good. I got it to go. They gave me more than enough. The staff was perfect. If I had a business I'd hire them all. The broccoli cheddar soup was the best I've ever had as well.

It is rare to find good food nowadays and by good I mean real, homemade, quality, local! Everywhere you go is generic Sysco garbage. We absolutely loved our meal at the wood fired bakery: a Torpedo and a Ruben sub with tomato beef soups. Really satisfying, tasty and warmed us up good…. You know it’s good when you fell happy as you eat. I also want to shout out to the staff for the excellent service, everyone was very kind and friendly and cared about their guests. Thank you!

We've been wanting to try this place since moving to Kelowna a few months back but with our work schedules and being closed on our days off made it impossible to give this spot the greenlight. Finally yesterday was the perfect opportunity for us to try it. The Wife had the Ham & cheese quiche w/ their cream of chicken soup and I got the smoked meat on Kaiser and they were both very good. The portions are pretty generous especially for the price. We'll definitely go back here again and try the rest of the menu.

The food is absolutely incredible here, they have two fresh soups every day that are always delicious! They pair nicely with any sub on their menu!

soup amazing along with a great staff but the smoked beef was a bit disappointing. the meat was doused with mustard, its all i could taste. no toasted bun, nothing else on the sandwich to add texture. no smokiness or sweetness to balance the flavour of the mustard. i'd go back to try another sandwich

Small, busy place but very unique. Excellent Cordon Bleu sub. Didn't get a chance to check out anything else, next time. Definitely worth checking it out for lunch.

Cash or debit only 😮. Thankfully they are very kind and generous about how they handle it if you have ordered but have only non-accepted credit cards. Between driving back a second time to pay, and a third time to pick up buns that didn’t quite make it into our bag 😜, (for which they kindly offered a few extras), my rout there and the very friendly staff became familiar quite quickly. Unfortunately by the time we actually got to eat our food was cold 😟. The flavour however was amazing 👌, and I look forward to going back to try it fresh and warm next time I’m in town - better prepared of corse 😜.

One of my favourite European restaurants. I love the borscht and usually will have it with a torpedo sub. Fantastic flavours and amazing customer service. If you have the chance to eat at this gem, do it.

Great little sandwich spot. Get in line, order at the til, they’ll yell out your sandwich order and you go pick it up. You also put your dishes and tray away once you’re done. The soups are very flavourful and what I find to be the star of the show. The reuben is tasty although I don’t think it looks appetizing.

One of our go-to places whenever I’m in town, Woodfire Bakery’s Chicken on a Kaiser never fails to satisfy my cravings. Generous portions and ever so tasty, after 20+ yrs, it remains one of Kelowna’s little gems.

I ordered Half and half, you will have to eat this with cutlery if you need to take out. But a second bun with it, one bun is not enough for two people. The guy helped me ordered the food is really nice. It is good for canadian or most of people, but not for me.

Quite possibly one of the best eateries around. I don't know if I would want to call it Bavarian or German, just delicious. I used to live in Kelowna and go all the time, now only when were passing through. We always get Torpedo subs (ham, swiss, tomatoes), Half&Half (smoked beef and chicken), & check out the soup of the day. There are more delicious dishes, just go and eat yummy food.

this place is awesome- been going here for years and it never misses ‼️chicken is amazing, garlic bread amazing, best caesar salad ever

Our absolute favourite lunch restaurant in Kelowna is Woodfire Bakery! The Chicken Cordon Blue sandwich is the bomb! We also love Chicken Veloute on a Kaiser and the side Caesar Salad. It's all delicious!
Jessica Hong
Absolutely delicious sandwiches at this spot. Very well priced with large portions. Ordered the Cordon Bleu and the Beef Tomato Soup. The soup was a little bit too salty for my taste but the sandwich was fantastic. The chicken wasn't dry and they were quite generous with the cheese. If you are stopping by, grab one if you're on the go or sit in. Highly recommended!

Oh my! That was one of the best sandwiches and soup I’ve ever eaten! I had the smoked beef w chicken soup and both were absolutely amazing! About 80% of people seem to be ordering the cordon Bleu, so very interested to try that next time! Atmosphere and service were awesome!! Highly recommend!!
FrenchFry?
Wood Fire Bakery serves good homemade food at a good price. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming. I recommend this place to all and I will definitely be back.

We went there for lunch March 8, 2018. I had the sausage with sauerkraut. It was great, but I wish I had ordered the Pork Hock with Sauerkraut. I saw it too late. We were four people in our party. The others had burgers and a chicken sandwich. Everything was good. The place was busy, but we managed to get a table. They don't take credit cards, only cash or interac. Good food. Wish I could go back.

Great place for sandwich lovers! We ordered their chicken cordon blue sandwich and definitely loved it! Look forward to coming back to this place to try different sandwiches. Till next time!
Faith
Ordered the Roast Beef and Smoked Meat sandwiches. Both simple and great in their own way. Staff were friendly and pleasant, even though we came right before closing! Looking forward to going back!

Food is delicious but the service is quite rude. One simple question about what is in the hot plate seem to aggrevate the server. Bummer cause the food was excellent.

Customer service. Standing in a line up waiting for a yummy lunch, i was surprised to see how patient and courteous the staff were with how many stupid questions they are asked and how simple it is, as a customer, to read the menu. That aside, i was more shocked at how the owner (later find out his name is Mike) was talking to his staff in such a horrible easy that I'm surpassed the big guy there didn't knock him out. Now, the big guy has got to have the patience of a saint because he keeps his cool when everyone else is running around like a headless chicken and he's worked there for years. Mad props to that guy. .he seems to be the glue in that place. Hate to see what would happen if he was to say "screw it" and leave.

Foods good though!

Lunch will never be the same. A delicious, not so hidden gem of a lunch spot in kelowna. Roast beef on kaiser is a dream, and the cordon blue sub is spectacular! This place is a not miss while visiting kelowna. Go early to avoid the rush!

Fantastic. Best food in town. You want a great 9$ lunch this is the place to go. Limited menu, no need for a large menu here. Smoked meat on a Kaiser is my favorite. The daily soups ore amazing. Come before 11:30 am or it lined up outside the door even in winter. Family and I go everytime we come to Kelowna. One of our must do's.
Fizzy
Good Ruben. Had the chicken sandwich (the velute maybe?) and the Ruben. Good value for your money. Come early though, the sub breads were gone as was the ham hock sandwich we wanted to try. Overall cute place and good food.
Johnny
Amazing Cordon Bleu sub. Great soups.. Anyone who has anything bad to say is lying, this place is awesome.
Looovefood
Amazing!. I have been to woodfire a few times and love the food! Last time I was there about a week ago my soup took ten mins to finish cooking to be served and I was ok to wait. When I went to get my soup I was told that the entire meal I orderd ( for two ) was "on the house" that level of customer service matched with wonderful food and prices will keep me coming back for years!
Sofia Li
Great food, poor service!. I have to admit the food is remarkable and great value, but the service I had today was just terrible!
There is one item on the menu as "soup and sandwich", so when I ordered I assumed I'd got what said on the menu. Clearly there is a misunderstanding with cashier when I was only charged for the soup among with all other food I've ordered with my husband. When I went back to cashier to double check, she explained to me like I was some sort of idiot. I didn't argue any further since English is not my first language, so I assumed the problem was on me. What makes it worse is that when I go back the bakery today with my friends (who really like the food), the staff made fun of me. When I tried to get my sub from the guy, he held my food and asked me to repeat what I ha ordered today, not in a kind way. I feel seriously offended, and I do know this is not right way to treat a customer, since I've worked as a server in restaurant business for 7 years. Please improve your service, for the sake of your delicious food.

I'm disappointed. I've been going to this place for years whenever I am in town (we have a vacation home in Kelowna) and I also drag whomever happens to be with my family and I. But the quality and portion size have been gradually getting worst and worst. My last trip there will be just that...my last. I guess you gotta fall outta love once in a while.
Laughingman
Ja, Bitte!. This place is seriously the S#$%T! How can you argue with Ham Hocks and Sauerkraut? It appeals on all levels to my inner German. The entire selection is exceptionally done. As you would expect with German food, it is filling so come hungry.

I only have one small complaint. This establishment needs to be licensed. How can you eat these brilliant creations without a nice cold beer to wash it down. Really, the Bakery could be a separate operation and this place could be a great German Bistro. Not that this should deter you though. If you're in Kelowna, this is a must try. it's as essential as a vineyard visit.

Carol. Been going there regularly for years, but it been going downhill recently,
dirty empty cake display.
Coffee is not hot enough and isnt nearly as good as it used to be.
The atmosphere seems tense these days.
The hot food remains excellent value for money and taste.
The decor is old and dingy.
We had decided three weeks ago to stop going there, but my son wanted a Cordon blue so we popped in and I see its finally being spruced up.

Born and raised in Kelowna, my first time there, absolutely delicious, if you don't mind waiting you will be thoroughly pleased with your meal, this won't be my last visit, thanks Mike!! :)

Yummy food!. It was my first time there last week when I went to Kelowna for a short vacation. The staff was really friendly and recommended us some of his favorites. We ended up getting the Ham Hock with Sauerkraut, Smoked beef on Kaiser and Chicken on Kaiser. Price was reasonable and portions were big. The Ham Hock was really good with well balanced flavors. The Smoked beef on Kaiser was a little too salty for my preference. We ordered way too much so we had to pack it to go. There's a corner where they have boxes for you to pack leftovers. Drinks are refillable too. I will definitely visit again!

Power was out when we arrived and we were warned on arrival by staff. Even though the power was out, the staff and owner managed the hurdle well and continued to serve excellent food. Recommend this to anyone for a nice and flavourful lunch.
CrazyEater
Still Great!. I first visited the Wood Fire Bakery about 10 years ago, and I am pleased to say that it is as good as ever. The price is still reasonable and the portions of hearty German food are huge. They should, however, consider opening a second location or moving to a larger one because it is often so busy that one has to wait in line for a while and may not find a place to sit.
EE
Very good food, huge portions, easy to share:) would come here again!
Haim G.
Good German food at its best. Ate lunch there several times. Their soups are great, kaisers are fresh, portions are big and overall it's German simple food at its best. Wish they were serving beer there too :-)

Slowly getting dissapointed. I have been going to this place for quite sometime off and on throughout the years and have noticed a difference in atmosphere...not a jovial and happy as it once was. At one time there was music playing...Now it seems they just rush you through like cattle. Granted they are very busy at lunch hour as this is thier main thing they do but it just is not as super great as it once was. The staff is not as experienced as they were at one time and are downright rude, at times. I find the portions of food not consistant each time we go,and can be dissapointing too, especially when we bring new friends there or friends from out of town after we have been talking so highly of it ....time to switch it up I think as there are just soo many other places in town to chose from. I really hope the owner and manager reads these.

Um. Yes. Please.. Holy crap. This place is fabulous! Went there yesterday for my first time... I had the smoked beef on a kaiser and the tomato soup. Best soup I think I have had. Ever. Period. I want more! Definitely recommend this place! Go EAT HERE the next time you want lunch in Kelowna!

Always have, Always will. I remember going here as a child and splitting the chicken breast on kaiser with my mother. It was always exciting, with the authentic music and free-spirited workers who seem to have constant smiles and up-beat attitudes.

And the food... my god the food. HUGE portions, hot servings, and always cooked to perfection. Real Europian cuisine, hearty and warming, and great leftovers for dinner too. The kaiser buns are delicious, and their Caesar salad is generously dressed and very garlic-y (never can have too much!). If I have company from out of town I always take them to Wood Fire Bakery, and I always will.

(Imagine if they delivered!!!)

UP - I very rarely ever give a solid 5.0. This place is absolutely awesome. SO MUCH flavour, and the best staff. Chicken cordon bleu is the best.

DOWN - From what i remember, they don't take credit.

OUT - As I said above, I don't think they take credit, however, the one time I went in with only my card, they gave me a free lunch. I was absolutely blown away and returned a few times later while in town and tipped handsomely.

Wowsers. The best, I have been going here for years. My favorite cup of coffee ever and I always get the veggie torpedo and I love it!

So good. So busy at lunch.

Needed a good cleaning. I thought the place could stand a good cleaning. Food was so...so!
PopnROFL
Now THAT's a meal!. First off, I wouldn't call this a "bakery" per-se... there are baked items in a display at the end of the counter, but that's not why you come here. It's more of a "Sit-down deli", and oh what a deli it is!

Ordered the "ham-hock and sauerkraut", and was expecting a submarine bun with some slices of ham from the hock, and some sauerkraut on top... Nope, what I got for my 10 whole dollars (tax included) was an ENTIRE ham-hock, with an equivalent amount of home-made sauerkraut next to it! Add on some home-made spicy mustard of awesome, and you've got enough food to feed a small family!

FANTASTIC food, but come a bit early, the place was packed up by 11:30, and was loaded to the hilt with people the entire time we were there. Finding a table (there are many) can be a bit tricky after it starts getting more full.

The atmosphere was friendly and warm, the dude behind the counter yelling out "Rueben Sub is rea-dy!" in a singing tone was awesome. Everyone sharing tables together, and enjoying a good meal gave a genial feel.

*DrooOOools*...... Chicken Cordon Bleu Sub. That's all I need to say. Along with mmMmm.....

Recommended To Everyone. If you haven't had a chance to eat here you are missing out. The portions are huge and the food tastes great.

Simply the best. This is some of the best food I've ever had in my life. I dream about this place, it's so good. There is nothing phony about this establishment - it's all homemade. Every soup I've tried is to die for, as are their specialty sandwiches. My favorite is the beef sand covered in gravy on a freshly backed sub bun. OMG in 48 pitch font.

If I had my choice of any place in Kelowna I'd rather eat, it would be THIS PLACE. Again, 48 pitch font, exclamation point .
Izzy
Always a great choice. I love this place the food is fresh and so good. The staff are super helpful and enjoyable to be around.
Crystal
Great food, friendly staff and nice atmosphere. I'll be coming back here for sure.

This place makes me drool.. Everytime I drive through Kelowna I always stop to have
the chicken sub or the rueben. An equally hard decision considering how different they wonderful they both are.

The Germans Definitely Know How To Eat!. This place is amazing from the second you walk in the door as you're greeted by wonderfully fresh smelling stews, baked goods and bread all making you drool like crazy before you even glance at the menu!
The portions may indeed look small but they ALWAYS fill me up, my personal favorite (as most people here have said) is the half and half which is a rich and creamy chicken pasta on one half of a bun with the smooth and delicious smoked beef and drippings on the other which almost require a fork to eat they're so messy! Woodfire is always busy but always has prompt service and friendly staff that are willing to give suggestions on what to try! My only suggestion is if you're on a diet, come back after you've finished it since alot of the stuff is somewhat fattening heh.

Kelowna's jewel.. If I have people coming to town and want to take them somewhere unique to eat, my go-to place is always Wood Fire! This place is almost a Kelowna icon that's been around as long as i can remember, and the food has always been good. I took a friend here who was once stationed in Germany with the military. He said the sauerkraut at Wood Fire is the best he's ever had outside of Germany!

Don't let what you get vs. the price deceive you. Sometimes, it looks overpriced for the portion size, but this is good and dense German cooking! I'm a big guy, and I have yet to ever leave here hungry! Personal favourite is the "Half and Half" roast beef and smoked meat, but I've never been disappointed with anything I've had there.

Highly recommend trying out this place if you haven't yet!
Eatinginkelowna
Simply Awsome Food. The portions are huge, the food is great. Don't stop here if your on a diet. I always grab the garlic keiser with half chicken half smoked beef then a side caeser and a coke.

I wish the place was open on a Sunday. Get there right when they open or seating in side can get very tight. This place could triple in size and still fill the place easy. Tons of seating out side on a nice warm day in the Okanagan.

I'm Polish/German and this is the way I like to eat.
Aelle
Huge portions of tasty food!. Such fantastic comfort food! The beef on a bun is my boyfriend's favourite and the bratwurst and sauerkraut is my favourite item on the menu. The soups are always very hearty and loaded with ingredients! The borsht is delicious...very creamy and unlike any other borsht I have tried. There has never been a time where we visit Kelowna and do not stop at Woodfire.
BecofSunnybrookfarm
Predictable in that good way.. This is one of those lunch places that deserves its local reputation and patronage. Basic food, served hot and fresh in a timely manner. While your menu options are somewhat limited, the (real) chicken-breast sandwich and goulash-style beef noodle soup ($9 with tax) I tried were hearty, filling and properly seasoned. My regular dining companion returns here frequently for the succulent pork hock and sauerkraut which has typical, rustic-style preparation and is hard to find in today's market.

Good value, good food.
Ncm2
Abundant German food. Freshly prepared no frills good German food served in humongous portions that will leave no one hungry.

The kind of place that fast food companies do not want you to find because this is so much better.
Sabbijay
Love the chicken cordon blue! Great lunch, yummy coffee and soup. A staple in kelowna.

Urban Legend. Woodfire bakery is one of those places you just keep returning to because of the food. The owner a once friendly individual used to add to the appeal. He seems now to no longer enjoy his business. You need to be sure you order what you want before arriving at the till. No after thoughts they are NOT tolerated, you will be sent to the back of the line if you decide to still want the addition! In the end I have to say this did save me additional calories & $5.00 left in my pocket instead of his.
Kent B
First time and it was amazing. Clam chowder was not too creamy and not too hardy. The 'Half and Half' is the optimal lunch that fills you up just right. A+ food for the price.
Cody
BEST LUNCH. Huge portions, super nice staff, and amazing fresh food.
George S
The best sandwichs in Kelowna. Try the Ruben or chicken cordon blue subs... Best bang for your buck.

Can anyone say no to Schweinshaxe? Clearly, I can not. The Wood Fire Bakery is conveniently located on the main throughway in Kelowna, on the corner of Harvey Avenue and Barlee Road.

On a road trip to Kelowna, I passed by this little bakery and decided to give it a try. We were welcomed into the store by a mannequin baker that kids probably love but I kind of felt uncomfortable with. There were unique European paraphenelia, including
