Reviews Born And Raised

Impressive to see Chef Vittorio himself at the helm of the wood-fired pizza oven. He was knocking out pies with the deft hand of a true pizzaiolo. Born and Raised offers a succinct and carefully curated menu of hipster-friendly classic Italian flavours seen through a modern chef's lens. An exceptional experience from start to finish. Sophisticated, yet playful space. Discreet, yet attentive service. Bold, yet familiar flavours. Standouts were Nonna's meatballs, the burrata, the pizza Margherita, the squash agnolotti, and Susan's torte. I get the distinct impression, however, that there's no such thing as a bad choice on this menu. To me, the whole thing resonated more as a bucket list than as a menu. Challenge accepted. Without a doubt one of the top 5 on my list of best recent additions to the Hamilton dining scene. And, for the love of Pete, make reservations.

Since this review. We've been here over 5 times since and Born and Raised has really impressed. Service is great and food like always is delicious. Hate only giving this restaurant 3 stars but it only deserves 3 for my last two visits. Been here 5-6 times and have thoroughly enjoyed the first 4. Place looks amazing, food is delicious and love how the owner is involved, usually making the pizza's. But the last two times we have been served by the same waiter and he has made both visits unpleasant. First visit, my girlfriend inquired about purchasing a painting on the wall and he looked and responded to her like she was an idiot. Second visit, we brought my kids and ordered their food right away so they can eat quickly (it was the meatballs) after waiting over 15 mins for him to come back, he walked passed me, I said "excuse me" and he rolled his eyes. I said, sorry, am I bothering you?. He then took our order and took a change for the better. Less than 10 mins later they served the pizza that I ordered, we waited to eat until the kids meatballs arrived which took an addition 10-15 mins. They then brought my girlfriends food, she ordered four scallops and he brought us two. I told him it was incorrect, he acknowledged it was his fault and asked if we wanted the other two but we declined because we didn't want to wait an addition 20-25 mins for them. A few mins later he brought us a pasta dish, said "fortunately for us, there was an extra one made" like he was doing us a favor. No body at the table ate it because it had mushrooms and none of us like mushrooms. All said and done, I wasn't looking for free food or a discount except maybe they should've charged us half price for the 4 scallops instead of the full price for the two they brought us. The food we did receive was amazing, the wine was delicious (horseshoes and hand grenades). We 100% will return but I refuse to be served by that waiter again.

We were able to book a reservation for Valentine’s Day through Open Table and were so pleased we were able to get in! The Fix Prix menu was simple but varied enough to please anyone. We loved our cocktails and the pace of service was perfect! The food was great (the mushroom ravioli need to become a staple... covet worthy). But the staff really sealed the deal. Our waiter (missed his name ) and the sommelier were helpful and knowledgeable without being overbearing. The wine pairing was spot on and well informed. We’re looking forward to a return trip to try their “regular menu”.

This was our fist visit to Born and Raised and my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. After being seated and drink orders taken, we asked our server if we could change seats, because at the table right behind us were some very loud patrons. We were accommodated immediately. My wife ordered the Monte Pollino and absolutely loved it. I had the Calabrese and it was probably one of the best pizzas I've ever tasted. Great service from Eric and Alicia and especially our server Jeremy!! Kudos to Chef Sanchez for the great pies!! We will definitely be back really soon!

My girlfriend and I live right around the corner, we've been to BnR several times. It's become our "dive" place for a bite and drink. Definitely delicious food, friendly staff and great wine. Can't wait for our next visit. PS if you guys ever need some professional photography done. I'm your guy! ;)

Great experience at Born and Raised on James North. Have visited on several occasions. Warm decor, great staff, interesting and delicious food. Seriously, how do you beat the smell of a wood-fired oven? Love that they use local ingredients, and serve local beer (Collective Arts, Innocente). Cheers!

So first time at born and raised. Had been meaning to go for a while and never had time. But made time on Sunday. First off was half price bottles of wine tonight (which I didn't know going there) which is always a good rhing. had a great red wine recommended by our server. Good choice. We started off with the sea bream ceviche which had a perfect balance of cooling avocado and heat from the chilis. Tasted like a traditional ceviche and didn't feel like it had been overdone sitting in a marinade all night. The bream was very fresh and a very good start to the meal. I happened to mention to the server that I am a cook and asked what the chefs favourite dish was to cook. To be fair I think that's a tough question to ask but she suggested several items and in the end I told her to surprise me. She ended up bringing us the squash soup for my friend and the spicy sopressata pizza for me. I'm told the soup was amazing and the pizza had an amazing dough cooked in the wood oven. Nicely charred. The pizza was delicious. The evening was topped of with a fantastic dessert selection and chef vittorio had a moment to come over and chat. Very nice to meet vittorio and glad he took the time to talk to another (if definitely outclassed and not at all top chef league) cook. Will definitely be back.

We had oysters (PEI & NB) and they were delicious! The Caesar salad was the best we have ever had, the wood fired Margarita pizza's crust was perfect and just the perfect amount of toppings....and the dirty burgers--THE BEST. The servers were attentive and phenomenal! Thanks for such an awesome experience- see you soon!!!

The BEST Calabrese pizza I have ever had!!! This place has fantastic food. We stopped in randomly looking for a bite to eat and so happy that we did. The owner found us a table even thought it was pretty packed on a Friday night. The owner was extremely friendly and service was quick. I will definitely be back to have the Calabrese and other items from the menu.

Freaking delicious place to dine - don't be fooled by the online table booking app, there's also seating available at the bar, so they may be able to squeeze you in without a reservation. It was also a little tricky to find the right entrance - it's through the patio and not very obvious. Food was definitely worth persisting. The steak on a bed of broccolini was huge and probably meant for two people to share, but I ate it all. Prepared with more salt and rub than I'm used to, but still enjoyed it. Thr bartender mixed up a tasty mocktail for me with an orange juice base and it was very tasty.

Came here on a last minute reservation at 9pm and the place was still full of energy! I heard this was one of the best restaurants in hamilton and it did not let down! The prices are fair for the size and quality of the dishes. We tried the mushroom gnocchi and seared scallops which melted in my mouth, will definitely be coming back just for these plates!

I am really picky about Italian food, but this place really checked all the boxes! We came in for a late dinner on the way home, and we had the Burratta (absolutely delicious, creamy, served with a tomato and rocket salad, and toasted sourdough), the obviously home-made gnocchi with mushrooms (they were amazing, I tried them!), and my partner had Tiramisu -it was really good, although arguably mine... well....-, and a tub of "Dulce de Leche" ice cream, which does not have my endorsement, but was good as well. The staff was friendly, and attentive, and the setting is fantastic: outside, but under a roof, so you do not need the vaccination certificate, but are still sheltered. We will certainly come back!

Had a great night here. Sat at the bar and the bartender was attentive and fun to chat with. The food was absolutely delicious, rose pasta was one of the best I have ever had and the arugula and beet salad was excellent. Great atmosphere, I will definitely be coming back next time I am in Hamilton

Ive been looking forward to coming here for ages and overall the food was really good! The gnocchi was amazing! I found the vibe a little off.. some of the staff seemed.. a little preoccupied or something. I’m not sure what was going on but it wasn’t exactly comfortable. I’ll probably give it another chance but I didn’t love it as much as I was hoping

This place is one on my new favourites!! An absolute beautiful old building turned into a modern restaurant/bar. I got the rigatoni rose and it was so flavorful. The sauce was thick and a little spicy it was delish. Noodles were some of the best ive ever had. We will be back soon thank you so much!
