Review Schoolhouse Restaurant - Grand Bend

Keri Hyde
An adorable little restaurant in a converted schoolhouse just north of the Main st drag (turn right on Sauble River Rd and left on 81st St - it’s on the left side across from the post office, if you get to the TD Canada Trust you have gone too far), about a 10-15 min walk. Lots of parking available, I think (although we walked). This is a nicer restaurant (beach attire not appropriate) with a small, but relaxing, patio, several tables on the main floor and a bar area downstairs. Everyone is super friendly! They get busy so reservations are highly recommended. The food was good (we had homemade burgers and fries) although the menu is fairly restrictive as they don’t serve breakfast, smoothies or sandwiches after 4pm. Although the menu had lots of options, for a picky eater, this presented a bit of an issue. The restaurant is on a main toad but surrounded by big trees giving the impression of a nature oasis within the town. The backyard has a river, benches and area for kids to run around. Very zen. Very beautiful. There is a park further north on 81st for the kids to release any additional energy. Well worth a visit!

After a long day at the beach, my friend suggested we go to the Schoolhouse. This was my first time. It's a cute little restaurant with friendly staff! We enjoyed our starter (Garlic Pita Toast) and meals (Club House Sandwich and Roasted Beet Salad)! Edit: I came back after another day at the beach, this time around I got the Dutch Oven Pot Roast (it was super good), for my side I got the Mac and cheese & it was like nothing I’ve tasted before, my friend got The Ratatouille. And for dessert we split a carrot cake, which we enjoyed - it was perfection!

Excellent food at excellent prices. I'd highly recommend checking them out for breakfast. And I love the decor, pictures and signs they have around the place. The staff are also wonderful people.

Great food and desserts!! Decoration and historical building both were amazing!! I would suggest to make a reservation in advance to secure your table! This place is the best restaurant you can relax and enjoy their made from scratch dishes! If there was a 10 star option I would definetely give more stars!! Chicken pot pie, ratatouille and biscuit were heavenly! Loved every bit of it!

Stopped for lunch on the way to camping at Pinery! Although we went by the high ratings on google, this place still exceeded all my expectations. Service was great. The food was excellent. Ordered a chicken pot pie. It was probably one of the best pot pies I've tasted. It went down well with a cold beer and good company. I would definitely stop by here again whenever I'm in Grand Bend next. 😀

Great food. Very unique place to eat. The combinations are creative and delicious. Slow service but friendly staff. Expect a wait on busy weekends.

First, the positives. We were seated immediately. Our server was very friendly. The food was delicious! Now, the negatives. We waited 17 minutes for our server to attend our table. She apologized for the wait upon her arrival. We placed our order (as we had plenty of time to decide what we wanted!): a bottle of wine and two entrees. We waited another 9 minutes before having ask again for the bottle of wine. It was brought to us, and again she apologized for the wait. While waiting for our meals (the wait time on this was not an issue), we read the note on the table. We found it to be inappropriate. All in all, would we go back? Yes, as the food was fantastic, but at least now we know not to have high expectations on quality of service. UPDATE: We gave it a second chance and went for breakfast. Outside stood a sign that read "we are at capacity" but we saw empty tables on the patio so we thought we'd take our chances. From the entrance, including the two empty tables outside, we saw 6 empty tables but were told "it'll be about an hour wait" (keep in mind we were the only people there waiting). Never again. Service here needs a severe upgrade.

Service was great. Heather (our server) was very accommodating. We had breakfast and it was very nicely cooked with fresh ingredients like their homemade sausage patties. Really cool decor. It was an actual school house before confederation.
