My partner and I loved it! Delicious food, and the server was warm and took the time to explain the menu and make recommendations. It was my first time trying pupusa, and I think I'm hooked! We will definitely be back.

Can't really think of one negative thing to say about this restaurant. A friend of mine brought me here as he is from El Salvador and he knows his El Salvadorian food of course.

He recommended the papusas and plantains. I was definitely not dissapointed. I've never had them from anywhere else so I don't really have anything to compare it too but they were delicious. Pretty much a corn flour bread pocket filled with cheese and beans... Pretty much my two favorite things. Then you top them off with pickled cabbage and salsa which was bomb. I also ordered tofu tacos. I was pretty surprised they even had that as a option. I was pretty full after eating the papusas so I kinda just picked at my tacos. I pretty much only ordered them cause I thought it was cool that they had that as a vegetarian option.

Service was also very good. Fast and friendly. And overall everything was decently priced. Around 30 bucks for the two of us. Love this place!

Amazing, authentic food and very quiet atmosphere perfect for relaxing and socialising with friends. Service was amazing the server was polite and confident in recommending dishes. Great music and great food. My fiancé and I will definitely be coming back and we'll be bringing friends.

Went here on reccomendation of  Salvadorian & Purto Rican friends to try the pupusas. I am a celiac and they offer "celiac friendly" options and I have not had a reaction. We have now gone 3 times because they are fantastic. We had the mix pupusas, the 2 amigos platter, and flautas the first time we were there and we loved everything. We continue to go for the pupusas though. The pickled cabbage and tomato sauce make them to die for. We are very pleased.

Arrived in the restaurant at around 1. Host/waiter's got his back facing us as he's doing something. Barely turns around to greet us with so little energy that it makes me want to leave.

including my party there was a total of 4 people in the restaurant. The other party was already finished eating, but it still took around 25 minutes to come out with 2 appetizers and 1 entree - and it all came out at once.

The food was very good. The quesadilla was very fluffy, the salad was very fresh, the chicken thighs were very juicy, and the sauce on the chicken complimented the rice amazingly.

It's been 10 minutes since I've finished eating, and I'm still waiting for the waiter to grab my bill. - napkins over the plate and plates off to the side.

15-20 minutes, I've even stacked all my plates for him. And still waiting.

Finally get the bill, been waiting 1-2 minutes to be asked for change or credit machine. Left because didn't want to waste another 15 minutes just to give him a better tip.

Tldr: food is great, service is very lacking.

Oh My God! We went on a Friday and I am still dreaming about the food on the Monday. What a great place. Nice ambiance, leather chairs, feels a little cramped, but it fits more customers. You know they make everything fresh to order when they tell you the soup might take a little longer to prepare.

I cannot wait to go back. Mmmmmm

The pupasas here are quite delicious! I also ordered the pescado Fritas, but I felt that the fish had been overly deep-fried. I also tried the enchiladas and that was better but couldn't compare to the pupasas. The staff were quite friendly but I thought it took a bit long to get the food. It was quite a pleasant atmosphere and music was not overly loud. I will come here again to explore other items on their menu.

We had dinner during their 13th anniversary. It felt like we were crashing a family party. They had a band come in a play some awesome songs including some gypsy kings. The pupusas are awesome.
My only complaint is we had to ask for more pickled cabbage and they did not have margaritas.

Love this place. Haven't been for years but in the last couple weeks have been there for both lunch and dinner.  I was not aware but on Friday nights they have live music, only makes me like this place more and was perfect for our cheap and cheerful date night. Food is just great, pupusas *drool* tamales, shared the app platter, everything so good. Ordered a ton of food for two plus a couple beers each and our bill is $56 before tip. I mean, come on, that's awesome.
Couldn't get pupusas out of my head so a few days later met a friend for lunch here, lucky for us the daily special was fish and shrimp tacos.  Shared an order of each(4 per order) plus pupusas and tamales, our lunch bill is $32 before tip. Seriously I love it I may as well just give up cooking at home and eat here daily.   I was a little worried about weekday lunch since we only had under an hour before back to work but my worries were for nothing, service was quick.
The other thing I'd like to mention is that this place, unlike acajutla, seems to be open consistently every time I go.
Writing this review is making me want to eat pupusas NOW.

A great little restaurant tucked away on 118th Avenue. The pupusas are always exceptional. Worth visiting, if you haven't yet. The atmosphere is humble but nice.

Hands down some of the best mexican food in the city. Having to visit family in Arizona, I enjoyed so many good mexican cuisine down there. This place by far was as close to eating mexican food when I was in Arizona. Good size portions, good service and not too expensive.

My husband and I have been looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant for a few years and we have found it! The food was amazing! I'm not sure if they hired different staff from when all of other people have went, but the service was great! It's a small quaint little place you go to spend time with the people you are dinning with. If you want fast food go to a fast food joint. This is home made and delicious! We will be back for sure!

Food is good, service is not. Like people are saying, the food there is really great but the service and the atmosphere is abysmal. The bathrooms are right in the dining room, the lights are harsh fluorescents and I was freezing the entire time. Add that to the fact that there was a good half hour wait between appetizer plates leaving the table and entrees coming in and the experience wasn't fantastic. That being said, the food is amazing and, honestly, I would probably just do take-out next time to avoid sitting in the ice-cold dining room with the quaint Spanish music playing faintly in the background.

New adventures. Was looking into date night with my fiance and stumbled upon El Rancho Spanish Restaurant. We were recommended to try the pupusas and they were absolutely delicious. We than continued on to try the Antojitos platter for 2 amigos and that as well was very tasty. The atmosphere was simple but enjoyable. The staff was very friendly, even though they were closing for he night they let us come in and order. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for some great tasting, decently priced mexican food.

My husband and I just got home from El Rancho and can barely move we are so stuffed from the amazing food we had. We both started with two mixed pupusas served with curtido that were to die for. Next my husband had Pollo Encebollado that was cooked so perfectly. The inside of the chicken was moist and tender while the outside had the perfect caramelization and crisp to it. I had the Canasta de Nachos and I have to say hands down they were the best nachos I've ever eaten. The service was friendly and welcoming if a little slow. Definitely worth the wait. We will return.

Slow Service, Great Food.. Pupusas were incredible!! Good luck trying to get to the washrooms without tripping over about 8 chairs on your way, we ordered our meal and didn't get our food until about 20 minutes after the restaurant closed...so we waited for about an an hour and fifteen minutes. That being said...when we got our food, it was AMAZING...authentic and delicious. Even the nachos as an appetizer were delicious. The one poor waitress that was working looked quite flustered and busy, but was very polite and apologetic for our long wait. All that aside, purely for the food...a great contribution to the neighbourhood and to ethic dining in Edmonton. The Best! Will be going back soon...when we have lots of time on our hands!

When we got into the restaurant, there was a male server working. He barely greeted us and did not seem to care to seat us somewhere. When we finally seated he mumbled something that we could not understand. Luckily, when it was time to order, a female server came and she was much more inviting. We ordered a chicken quesadilla and a chicken enchilada mexicana. Both were decent and edible but definitely not anything special.

Great food. A group of 6 of us went here on a thursday and they werent quite prepared for a group so large. Next time we will forsure make reservations. The place is small and in the ghetto, but it is tasty. Everyone of our party enjoyed their food except for our friend who ordered the steak.. but then...who orders a steak at a spanish restaurant? lol
Will forsure go back again.

Go early or make reservations. Went here for an EARLY supper Friday night. When we walked in, there was only one table finishing up. I was suprised, as I had read that this place is very busy on weekends. However, it quickly filled up.

Since we placed our order well before the supper rush, our food came quite quickly, which again, suprised me slightly.

As it was our first time here, we ordered a variety of appetizers to share amongst 3 people. We got the Enchiladas Salvadorenas, mix pupusas, beef tacos, flautas and chicken quesadilla. I loved the pupusas, but my dining companions favoured the enchiladas (these were also very good). We all loved the pickled cabbage that came with both dishes. There was enough food to fill 3 people, and we didn't get dessert.

I would love to go here again to try some of the entrees, and perhaps the deep fried ice cream.

Diamond in the rough!. Went for dinner tonight and everything was awesome. The pupusas and tamales were fantastic and I was so excited to find so many of the items on the menu gluten free! Will definitely go back! As for the slow service people are complaining about, there's one waitress and a small kitchen for heavens sake! Waiting a few extra minutes for amazing food won't kill anyone...

A genuine surprise. This place is terrific. Get the mixed papusas and you will be in heaven. We had one each and oh my gosh are they good. Next we went for the shrimp appetizer (I can't recall the name) and the goodness continued. Mains were a couple of chicken courses and the burritos. Home runs on all. Everything is made from scratch and is authentic. Prices are good and sizes are large. We are definitely going back.

Went for my mom's birthday, wow, so good! We didn't think we would need a reservation for a Wednesday night but almost didn't get in. We had the make your own taco platter for 4 and couldn't finish it, no matter how hard we tried. My extremely fussy 10 year old daughter even had 3 tacos's. They even brought my mom a piece of the most delecious cake we have ever had. I can see us being regulars, great food, good service, a real winner!

Authentic. As a Salvadorean, this place is the best in town. Their food is authentic and priced well. If you are looking for a gluten free or vegetarian dish, the menu will not dissapoint you. I always leave feeling full and satisfied. This is as authentic are you can get. The restaurant is family owned, so is small and cozy, yes the service is slow but worth the wait. I would recommend updating their website and reviewing their hours of operation.

STILL OPEN. This place is not closed. I tried to find a way to change it for the page's description but couldn't. Not sure who made this initial claim or who changed the page description, but hopefully someone can change it back - I imagine it's hurting business for this great place.

Oh, a review: The best Mexican food in Edmonton. Reasonably priced, able to make anything vegetarian, and a great friendly staff. Sometimes it can take a while for the food to come, but if you're patient you'll be rewarded. Would recommend this to anyone.

Friendly and Authentic!. Hands down, El Rancho is the best place for authentic South American food in Edmonton. Incredibly, vegetarians can substitute tofu for meat in almost every dish, and there is plenty to choose from. I found the service friendly and if anything is slow you must understand that this is a little family restaurant with minimal staffing and the food is made from scratch. Well worth it. I even had my wedding dinner here and they were so hospitable - they even included a musician who played us songs on his guitar as we ate. Don't even bother going to Julio's - this place is a 10 out of 10.

El Awesome!. Wow, the food was great! Had the appetizer plate for two (2 flautas, 2 tacos & 2 enchiladas). Comes with a green salad. We also got a side of beans and rice.

The great thing about this place is you can basically get anything as a vegetarian option - by different combos of items or by subbing tofu for meat.

The food was authentic - lots of cilantro, great pico, the only thing i was sad about is there didnt seem to be any red sauce for the enchiladas.

Lots of South Americans seemed to be eating there as well. The Price was right, portions generous, and food was great. I have read in other reviews that the service was slow but in all fairness, there was just one waiter and one cook, so be patient, its worth it. Will return soon.

I’ve heard about El Rancho Spanish restaurant for quite some time now but never had the urge to try it out until recently when I saw Steph’s post on it. Can someone say PUPUSAS? Exterior I went with two other co-workers on a Wednesday for lunch and the place was empty (only one other table was occupied and they were wrapping up when we arrived). Maybe it was because we came during the latter part of lunch (closer to 1pm) but yikes, I hope they are busier during peak times.

The pupusa had a crispy yet soft corn tortilla slathered inside with fried beans and a nicely seasoned pork, which just enough cheese and a tomato sauce on the side that could be added to it to make it the perfect bite. The hit of the night was the platanitos crispy outside, a soft mush inside, and slightly sweet tasting. Yet highly addictive as we each polished off the plate quickly and after leaving the restaurant left us wanting more.

Moo, Adventures of a SK Girl and I have heard much about El Rancho, which is a family-run El Salvadorean restaurant on 118 Avenue. The space is small and dressed in warm colours. Our server turns out to be one of the owners; she normally cooks with her mother in the back. She is incredibly knowledgeable about the menu, naturally; her suggestions for supper are spot-on. She even makes some menu changes for us, such as adding additional items into platters that normally contain two of each item, so that we all can sample everything.
