So glad to see that Sumo Sumo has opened a location in South Edmonton along Calgary trail. I can finally satisfy the sushi craving without having to drive too far now! The menu has a large selection and the service is also friendly and attentive. I think that the sushi itself is flavourful, fresh and decently priced given the portion that you get.
We ordered the deep fried tofu, the volcano roll, the aloha roll and the chop chop cone. All were very tasty and I would definitely consider ordering these dishes again! My only complaint is that the sushi rolls themselves are quite large.. it would be nice if they were cut into smaller sizes.
In terms of restaurant decor/atmosphere, it's pretty spacious and open which is nice. But, I was disappointed to see that it was so dimly lit, with all the curtains closed for dinner service. Nonethless, the pros definitely outweigh the cons in this situation and I'll still be coming back for the good food!
This is a family favourite for us (as you might be able to guess my kids, who can be picky at home, are certainly not picky when it comes to ethnic food). Every time we come we are served quickly and the food is fresh and delicious.
This last time had has opening with some miso soup (lovely and not too salty with perfect little cubes of tofu), avocado and mango spring rolls (so creamy and warm), and gyoza. All hits for us (expect my eldest, who for some reason doesn't care for miso soup).
My youngest has a thing for the volcano roll (with scallop, crabmeat and shrimp plus a tangy sweet chilli sauce and spicy mayo) so we ordered that as per usual. We also tried a new one, the Apprentice roll with salmon, shrimp, crab, mango and avocado and we all really enjoyed that one. This time we tried a different platter...we opted for the Titanic (served on a boat platter of course). It included 6 California rolls, 3 tappamaki, 3 ashinko maki, 4 pieces of teriyaki chicken roll, 4 pieces of beef Thai roll, 2 egg sushi, 2 Ebi sushi, and 2 spicy crab sushi. It was another great meal.
Yummy! If only it wasn't so far I would be here more often. The sushi and sashimi is fresh, delicious and well made. I love the Sunday all you can eat brunch. At $35/pp it's definitely worth it with all the variety and sashimi offerings.
We have been wanting to try Sumo Sumo for their Sunday brunch but we never have the time. Anyway we decided to try it out for dinner last night.
We had the chicken karaage, chirashi set, and aloha roll. The chicken karaage were small strips of deep fried chicken but they gave us a lot so I guess it kinda evened out. The karaage that I'm used to having are bigger pieces of chicken. It was fried really nicely as well. The sauce that it came with was okay. We prefer a more sour sauce but it's a little more on the garlic-y side.. but very subtle. The flavour is hard to explain haha.
Chirashi set came with miso soup and salad. The miso soup had a weird initial flavour but it goes away. The salad had sesame dressing. The chirashi bowl itself had egg, ika, salmon, tuna, surf clam, and a shrimp. It had a lot of sushi rice. This meal alone can make a person full! The sashimi was decent, I found that it didn't melt in my mouth which was disappointing... I'm a big fan of tuna sashimi that just melts.. I found that theirs didn't. OH well.
The aloha roll was interesting. I can't remember exactly what was in the roll but it had mango and shredded coconut and tuna I believe. It's not the prettiest roll I've seen but it tasted great. It came with a sauce ... It's almost like spicy mayo? But not spicy at all. The roll is of decent size and it was rolled well too.
Service was good. Food came out at a reasonable time. The pricing is the same as any sushi restaurant. From my experience, I'd say it's a decent Japanese restaurant but it's not the best especially considering how far it is from me. I doubt I'll be back anytime soon.
Sumo sumo was my first experience with Japanese food. I am not proud to say I was in my 20s. FOR SHAME! But after trying it here I have been all over trying it where ever I can. I'm just going to start by saying that the spicy tuna tempura maki should be a controlled substance. They are delicious and addictive. Other than that they have many of the rolls you would expect from a sushi place and they are all good quality, and a fair size as well. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is very nice. This won't be the fanciest place you've ever had sushi, but it is a great place to visit for a casual, consistent, sushi (especially rolls) fix.
We were here to celebrate a birthday a couple of weeks ago. Overall it was a good experience. The food is a bit pricy and service was a bit slow, but likely due to our large party. We would still happily come back.
Great vibe and atmosphere. Portions are very small for the price you are paying. Sushi was good though. Lot's of variety and selection. Service was very good as well.
I used to be a regular for their sunday brunch buffet, but it has gone downhill since... They had their 20 sashimi limit, but you were not limited on scallops or tuna, just the toro. As well as their chopchop sushi were unlimited. Now most items which kept me a regular are limited(actually all) no longer worth the 42$ per head pricetag. Better off at watari where you can order toro or scallops at a 2$ per order extra. Even ontop of the 27$ they charge per person its cheaper.
This being said, the food here is still good, atmosphere is nice and semi classy. Their chopchops are the best ive tried in town so far, food overall better than your average Japanese restaurant.
Remains as one of my dad's favourite sushi places. The sashimi here always tastes fresh and appealing. However, it gets very pricey. Not sure if eating here is worth it unless you're looking to impress or something is calling for a celebration. However, if money isn't an issue then this is one of the best sushi joints in Edmonton. Make sure to. Make a reservation just in case!
Nice place, good food and the price was good compared to most places these days. Service was slow, once we received our food we didn't see the server again till the end.
Food was excellent. We went for the buffet. Service was as slow as a turtle. Had to wait 30 minutes for sashimi. Still the best ayce sushi place in edmonton.
I was there for their Sunday ayce. But be warned it $35 + 15% (tip) + tax
I knew about this going in so I didn't eat or drink anything all morning. I even decided to work out to burn off some calories to maximize my sumo sumo intake
This is the best damn ayce sushi place around. There is food every where. U order from a menu and there is a help yourself buffet. Grant ayce Sundays don't offer their full menu but there is lots to chose from
menu - sushi,tempura,rolls,comes,sashimi etc
Buffet - too much to list
The sashimi is impressive. Thick quality slices. None of that garbage 3 little pieces which is normally 1 sized piece
It was a marathon meal of a solid 2 hours. Didn't even eat anything until the next day
Definitely would go back. Might even do a harder workout to burn more calories before I go
I really enjoyed this place. The beef tataki was pretty good a little too much sauce on it. The rolls were really big and thick which was hard to eat. I did like the real crab in the rolls. The only unfortunate thing was it was a bit pricey, almost $200 for four of us and we didn't order that much. Impressed with the service as well, very nice serve staff.
Looooove this place! I have a shellfish and crustacean allergy and it is the only place I trust to eat sushi. The staff are knowledgable about allergies and take extra effort to my meal safe AND enjoyable. Tonight I had the tofu, philly roll, beef Thai and avocado roll. My hubby had the gyzo dumplings, apprentice roll, samurai roll and spicy crab cone. We typically take part in the saki cart and the lychee saki is outstanding . If you haven't been here you HAVE to check it out! Can't say enough about this place!
We came for lunch a few weeks ago. We were craving some sushi and we live in the area so its not my first visit nor will it not be my last. We ordered the sashimi and maki love boat along with beef tataki and mussels in ponzu. The love boat is a pretty big undertaking for 2 people, But with a little effort we made it through. Nothing really bad to say about this place, When I'm craving sushi and don't feel like driving too far, its always good to me. There are a few better spots in the city if you truly want the best but this will do in a pinch. The service is good as well, no real shinning points here, but there's not much for them to do. They ring in your order and bring it out promptly. No complaints. The décor in the new building, is quite Japanese to say the least. I've never been to japan, but I bet japan looks less Japanese than this place. But its cool, I like the bamboo and the feudal harp music. Glad they didn't make me take my shoes off.Overall its a good spot, one I wouldn't hesitate to recommend and frequent on occasion myself. I've only tried the sushi but if everything else is made with the same care and attention, then I'm sure its good as well. Keep doing what you're doing guys.
Great Food , Exceptional Service. Highly recommend it, recently celebrated a special occasion, the staff and management went out their way to ensure the evening was a success.
Stopped in at Sumo Sumo for impromptu dinner on a Friday night.
No reservation had us relegated to the "patio"...
Well...patio has a roof, windows and heaters. Impressed allready. Haven't even been seated yet.
Impressive menu.
Settled on seafood bento box. Substituted yakiskoba for rice. Cost an extra dollar.
Delicious!
Crab and cucumber salad.
Chicken spring rolls.
Gyoza.
Salad, soup and ice cream also included.
$60 bill for myself and wife with one beer and an iced tea.
Only minor complaint is that each component of the bento "box" was served seperately, and it was slightly confusing.
Great value.
So full!
We will most deffinitely be back!
Been here for years. Favourite sushi place. Looks amazing and taste even better. Always busy there. But worth the wait. Not your typical fast food sushi place. Friendly staffs
Super overpriced but undeniably delicious. This is a great sushi place. I've been going here for years and I have never had a bad meal. I wish they would lower their prices a bit. They would get a lot more money from me in the long run if they would price their food more reasonably.
You eat with your eyes first, and the food here is certainly visually appealing. And when the artful presentations hit your palate the flavours do not disappoint. I resolve to try eating one of everything from the large menu in the next year or more.
Busy sushi restaurant in Sherwood park. Service is good and the sushi is always fresh and the tempura is made to order. I also enjoy the enclosed patio And they have take out too. I will be back even though the prices are premium.
So a couple friends and I headed to Sumo Sumo to try their all you can eat Sunday brunch. At the price point of $42/person ($35+GTS+Mandatory 15% Gratuity) there are many other choice for all you can eat. That being said I was very surprised by the food they offer, the sashimi (20 pieces per person) was a much larger cut than any other AYCE restaurants you can find in Edmonton, the sushi and maki rolls tasted great as well. My personal favorite would have to be the chop chop (for anyone thats not a regular sushi goer its chopped scallops mixed with mayo and tobiko)!! Besides the food off the AYCE menu there was also a self serve cooked food area, serving muscles, seaweed, salads, chicken skewers, spring rolls, deep fried salmon, noodles, and some maki rolls. With the meal it came with a drink as well, we opted in for tea, the tea wasn’t watered down like some other places which was nice and refreshing!
The only down side I had with Sumo Sumo was that unlike other all you can eat places where you don’t check off what you want and hand it off to the waitress/waiters, instead you have to flag them down and remember exactly what you want to order.
If you don’t mind spending $42/person on a meal then I would definitely recommend you to give Sumo Sumo a try!
4/5, would definitely go back! But maybe try their regular menu instead of the AYCE one!
Consistent Food, Random Service. Sumo Sumo has this going for it: it's food is good. It's not amazing, but it's one of the better sushi places in the greater Edmonton area and it's food quality hasn't wavered since I started eating here years ago. It has our favourite variety of maki (Spicy Tuna Tempura Maki is amazing!), and it's drink selection includes above-average bubble tea.
The service is very hit-or-miss, even when the place is less than half-full, but we're more focused on our great food that we don't let that deter us. The patio is fairly new; we've been out there a couple times and both have been a bit noisy. The place is on the edge of a commercial / industrial area, and the patio is between the building and where two main roads intersect. If they planted some trees or put a sound barrier up, it would make a world of difference.
That said, the quality of the takeout food is terrible. It may just be that having good sushi sit in styrofoam packing kills the texture and flavour, but I couldn't tell the difference between our favourites from Sumo Sumo and the Tokyo Express stuff sitting in grocery store delis.
Solid sushi in the park. A regular spot for my family and friends; We dine at Sumo at least once a month.
While there are certainly better spots in Edmonton for sushi and Japanese in general this is the spot for Sherwood Park.
Sushi is consistent and usually quite fresh despite our landlocked location - One of the few places I'll eat Sashimi in Alberta.
A hidden treat is to ask for Kani Maki with Tempura; Creamy and crunchy it's not traditional in the slightest.
Udon soups are amazing and come with extremely large portions.
Tempura is light and crunchy and the teriyaki dishes are quite delicious as well.
The lunch special is a solid deal;
Worth checking out for anybody in the area.
The food is delicious, they have a lot of variety. Servers are generally friendly and the atmosphere is nice. HOWEVER, the service is terribly lacking. For our last 2 visits, today for lunch and in June for dinner, we have waited far too long for first beverages and then for food to come out. We waited 25 minutes for our rolls and 40 minutes for our sashimi because apparently "sashimi take longer than roll". I'm not sure how that makes sense, that slicing some fish takes 40 minutes. I will probably go back because I really like one server and the variety but my boyfriend has no desire to return.
Sumo Sumo ='s Yummy Yummy. If you like maki, you will love Sumo Sumo
Good quality sashimi. Sashimi - great. fresh. slices are big..... almost too big! we had the tuna and the salmon.
sushi - we had the yellowtail, it was decent.
rolls - we had the chop chop, it was not good, too bland, rice was mushy. we also had a couple of the fruit rolls from the buffet, they were fun and tasty.
from the buffet - grilled gyoza, whats not to like; teriyaki beef was tasty, deep fried tofu "salad" is definitely not salad like but it was yummy.
service - decent, i appreciated the server letting us know that the service gratuity was already applied when we paid instead of just trying to see if people would tip on top of that.
restaurant and facilities - cool decor, probably why prices are so high, seating is awkward, our table was freezing cold, bathrooms very clean.
all in all i will return here, but i will eat my entire sashimi allotment of 20 pieces instead of getting sidetracked by the deepfried westernized buffet choices which were good but the sashimi is better.
Thumbs up. Great place. I liked the food, flavor and décor. Sashimi tastes fresh. Definitely be back.
Not super good, not super bad. Decent!
Ordered: maki maki, rock n roll maki, passion maki, rainbow, dragon I.
The dragon I is not as good as the other sushi restaurants for sure.
Their rainbow, maki maki and other tuna variations are pretty decent.
The quantity seemed pretty good, I didn't feel like I was being gipped.
Mostly just crunchy, fried stuff, fresh fish, and rice!
Not cheap so go there with an open wallet :D
Good was very good. However disliked the atmosphere, impersonal and busy. Staff were distracted and not attentive. The enormous TV screens detracted from what little ambience the place had.
Fresh fish. Overly priced but fish was fresh.
A bit pricey, but worth it. I tried out their Sunday lunch buffet
Pros:
Sashimi quality could match up with Vancouver's
Varies choices of Sashimi & reasonable size.
Menu & Food table/bar are both awesome.
Cons:
Rolls are so-so and lack of picture (blind pick unless you ask)
Service charge is fixed.
Today we went to Sumo Sumo for dinner and we wanted to try some new things. My mom and I don't know much about sushi and what tastes good, so we asked our server, Madra, if she could make some suggestions. Not only did she make lots of suggestions with amazing detail but she was also incredibly friendly, helpful, and she made us feel comfortable and cared for. Madra is amazing at her job and because of her, and the ridiculously good food, we will be back again and again! Keep up the amazing work Madra!!! Thanks for an amazing dinner experience!
EatWithYourEyesFirst. You can't go wrong with anything you order here. Once we had ordered to go but decided to stay instead and the service was phenominal I swear they re-made everything just so it would be hot and fresh. Unbelievable service A++
Very good sushi, on the expensive side. Decent service. Miso soup was watery and lacked flavour, easily the worst I've had. Good experience overall though.
Huge fan!!! Never been disappointed. Chieashi set is my favourite. Sunday brunch is a bit higher in price but great food.
My brother and I wanted shushi one day, this hole in the wall (before they moved) came up on our radar. Looking at the place we though we didn't want to risk it. We went in anyway and never regretted it. Little more expensive but worth it.
Amazing. Best sushi in the park
Love this place. We have been going there for 4 years now and since they moved got even better. Sunday brunch is a steal- their sashimi pieces althought limited to 20 are served bigger than most places at regular price! The Joe's roll with fresh salmon instead of smoked, and sumo roll are my favorites. Uni is always very fresh. The only downside is they don't offer any white tuna, only Maguro tuna! I always make the drive to Sherwood Park just for this. Well worth the drive!
Nice atmosphere, new facility, very good sushi and sashimi - great spirits - I'm definitely going back. If you go on a Friday evening consider making reservations. The place filled up fast when we were there.
Great place for Sushi. Very fast service and food is great.
Had awesome sushi! I dont even like sushi but i ordered the California rolls. It was warm and delicious. 6 decent sized sushi rolls. Went during happy hour. 5 bucks! Couldnt get better than that with that good of sushi. Will definitely be going back :)
Great food decent prices for the quality and friendly service every time I come here big fan nice Decore and glad they Sapporo on tap!
Excellent Service, Excellent Food Every time.. I love this place. Can't say one negative thing about it. The servers are always around to give you a refill, food is always stunning and delicious and the place is just beautiful to sit in and enjoy a romantic dinner for two.
FABULOUS FIND in Sherwood Park. Went to Sumo Sumo last night for the first time-- It's located about 3 blocks from Millenium Place next to the new Best Western Hotel in Sherwood Park. Decor was fabulous: crystal light fixtures, bamboo booths, cozy white leather chairs. Looking through the HUGE menu (including noodle dishes, stir frys too) we were torn between the Titanic boat or the Shogun Bridge, went with Shogun, and was blown away. The Shogun sushi selection included california, spider, tuna, salmon, cucumber, and an assortment of raw: ALL fresh, and the ones I had were delcious. There were 26+ peices of sushi and the bill came to $40.00.
Check this place out if you love sushi, especially right now when the place is new, clean, and sparkly.
Nice reno, good sushi.. Service was awful. Host walked us around the resto about twice before finding our table, WTF, that place is not that big. Server started to walk away before I was done ordering. When she brought out the food, she tossed the plates on the table and turned to walk away asap. Had to chase her down to get a water refill.
Room looks nice and classy. I used to go to SumoSumo at the old place so this was a huge upgrade.
Fried tofu and tempura was good, nice and light with out being greasy. Beef Tataki was really tender, there was lots of meat but at $14 for an app, there should be lots.
The sushi platter was really good. everything was super fresh, meat was thick, everything was well balanced.
I'm temped to come back to try out the $35 brunch.
Such delicious sushi!. This place is really good and definitely worth the drive out. A bit hard to find. Apple Maps directs you to the wrong place >=(
I was with a dinner party for around 15, and it was a birthday party for a Friday night. Not only did they do reservations on a Friday, us being all asian were about 30 minutes late. I felt kind of bad for the server.
Anyways, the restaurant was quite packed when we went. But despite all our large orders of sushi and food: the quality doesn't degrade! They do any excellent job and even from our room you can see the open kitchen/ sushi bar. There was a lot of food for each plate and soon we had a bunch of take overs.
I highly recommend the Lovers' boat and Samurai sushi and this spicy tuna one. They are very very good :)
The sumomono salad is quite different than what you expect.
Was hoping to see a sumo as my server Food really good service was quick, owners came by to say hi super friendly and great to put a face to the owner of an establishment. Salmon titaki by far my favorite from all sushi restaurants. Back soon that's for sure.
Love th different kinds of sushi they have. I'm an addict for sushi and I would recommend this place. They also give a good proportion of beef tataki and seaweed salad even for 2 people
Super fresh sashimi! The color of the tuna was beautiful and very flavorful! Maki was also good, had a soft shell crab cone and though it took a while to arrive, it was the best one I've ever had. Nice ambiance, good staff.
I went there with my sister and we both loved it, well presented and really fresh. We took 5 different kinds of rolls and they were all good. Service was good amd the restaurant is really nice. A little pricy but definatly worth it!
Highly Recomend ... if you can find it!. I was introduced to this place through teambuy, and have bene back 3 times!
Sushi is delicious and portions are genourous (Favoruties are samuri and volcano!)
Kebabs are delicious as well. Had chicken and Salmon, both tasted very good and vegetables were very nice.
Went one time for lunch, had the Teriaki bento box ( comes with 2 cali rolls, 1 salmon roll, miso soup, salad and teriaki chicken with rice). GREAT VALUE, just the right amount of food and for a great price.
This is probably one of my favourite restuarants in the greater Edmonton area. HIGHLY Recomend.
Decor is nice, newly renovated and clean.
Only downside is that it took me forever to find the place..
Love it. Food is always delisious. I am never dissapointed. Love their new building. I live in edmonton and make the drive just to obtian the Sumo Sumo.
Excellent food and service. We stopped in to satisfy a sushi craving and were pleasantly surprised. Nicely decorated, and very attentive service. The server was knowledgeable on menu and was easily able to assist with selections for a vegan diet, despite limited selections, to build a delicious meal. More than just sushi is available with various styles of Japanese food. Somewhat pricey for special rolls, but not more than you would pay anywhere else in Alberta. Overall impression was very positive.
I'm from Vancouver & I travel around for work & have been to numerous restaurants accross Canada & this is hands down my favourite Japanese restaurant! I've been addicted for years & have coming here since their old place by Joey Tomatoes. They have such a great menu & while i try to try new things, I always have to have a Samurai roll (best roll I've ever had, but hardest to eat) & a kabob. They also have a very different, but very good sunomono salad. I don't understand why they didn't come up for a local restaurant search here in Urban Spoon for Sherwood Park? WTF Urban Spoon??!!
Had a great experience here on our first visit, and every intention of coming back with friends. Sushi was prepared well, fresh and did not disappoint. Extensive menu made it hard to choose, so looking forward to trying some of their other dishes. Staff were friendly and attentive. Definitely recommend!
I've been here twice and have had absolutely amazing experiences both times! The first time I was with a friend who doesn't eat a lot of sushi and the sushi she ordered was not what she expected, she asked to switch for another roll and they were more than happy to accommodate!! The staff are so polite, we were seated right away, everything is extremely clean and inviting, and the food is AMAZING! Would definitely recommend to anyone!!
The staff were some of the nicest people we've encountered! We had the buffet and it was pretty good compared to other sushi buffets near by/in Edmonton. For the most part, the fish was fairly fresh; however, the tuna was slightly off that day. Other than that, recommended.
When in for brunch buffet. A bit expensive for the given choices of food but sushi option is fresh and sashimi is in good cut-size. Limit 15 sashimi per person.

Soooooooo good! The dinner bowls with rice and beef are delicious. Not a big fan of sushi but it's great quality! They have nice outdoor seating and indoor seating. Waiters are always nice and energetic! Ten outta ten would recommend!
