I was pretty impressed with Buddy. The service was very fast. Our waitress literally stood at our table until we were ready to order which was not necessary and awkward but was ready when we were. The food came very fast and was fresh but it didn't come all at the same time. We for vegetarian spring rolls, chicken chow mein, ginger and green onion beef, and almond chicken. Just a note that the ginger chicken is not fried as well, the almond chicken was bland - but other than that it was good! I will be going back and would recommend it.
Good place for Chinese food. Ridiculously fast and receptive service. Food quality is very good. The Seafood Chow Mein has a good balance of seafood to vegetables. The noodles are crisp on the edges and are good quality. Other Chinese restaurants in the city make their chow mein too drenched in sauce or fall short of providing a good balance of seafood to vegetables. Personally, I like my dishes packed with fresh ingredients but in balance with the dish. The Ginger Chicken is also very good here. It is presented nicely and you can see the quality. The chicken is crispy and the sauce is very complementing and tasty. Every dish comes out lightning fast and is hot to serve. Interior could be better but otherwise, service is phenomenal and food is very good.
New Budddddy!. Everything they make is delicious and full of flavors! From sweet and sour pork chop to fried taro w/duck. Taste so dam good writing this review. Hella tasty!
Some Guy. We pass by this place very often, and for over two years keep saying "we should try that place." Well, today we did, and we were not disappointed.
I can see why people say that the service isn't great, because it wasn't. Was it BAD, no. It just wasn't the greatest. Most of the menu seemed to be a fairly bog standard Canadian Chinese, but we wanted something a bit more authentic. As such, we decided to put the restaurant's name to the test and order the Seafood Bird's nest. . . and it was DELICIOUS! I don't care how authentic it is (or isn't), it was well worth the $22.50 as we didn't get all the way through it before we were filled up and happy. Their smoothies are also quite passable and refreshing. I'd definitely go back, if only for the duck which people were eating at the next table and it looked delicious.
Make sure to get black pepper beef chow mein!
Buddy is good. I've been here a few times and think the food is good, authentic Chinese, good prices, nothing fancy.
Super clean, friendly fast service. Waitress gave perfect recommendations. Food was great! 1/2 fried chicken with garlic soya sauce was excellent!! Fried rice was good as was the ginger beef. I have no complaints and will be back.
Our Go To for Great Chinese Food. This is a place that we have been going to since it opened. It quickly became a favorite of ours and we have been there hundreds of times and have taken friends and family there to introduce them to some fantastic meals.
This restaurant has consistency down to a science. The food is always hot and delicious and comes out of that kitchen so fast that you'll think that you must have called ahead with your order!
Service has always been quick and helpful and polite. No complaints there.
We like to order off the Chinese-Chinese Food Menu, not the Canadian-Chinese food one. If you venture away from your Chicken Chow Mein and your Pineapple Chicken Balls for a moment, there is a whole world of deliciousness waiting to be tasted. This is definitely the place to try some new things. I can honestly say that I have never had a dish here that I didn't enjoy, but some of our favorites are:
Black Pepper Beef (Hot)
Tofu w/ Chinese Mushrooms & Suey Choy
Crispy Chicken with Garlic Sauce
No Name Ribs
Peking Style Ribs
Beef Brisket Noodle Soup
Rice Noodle w/ Beef & Bean Sprouts
Don't be afraid to look around at other tables and see what other dishes appeal to you, and ask your server if you are looking for a new suggestion. They may steer you towards your next favorite dish!
This is a place that I would recommend without hesitation. Give it a try and I'm sure that you will be very happy with your choice.
Good food and price. I ordered their sweet and sour pork on rice. I asked for no vegetables and they complied! even the waitress spoke english very well. brother had bbq duck and we split some chicken wings. price was very reasonable and it was clean. they even have some fresh seafood but we didn't go for that. I would come back. Parking was plentiful but watch for blind motorists who go the wrong way on the one way streets
Their pork belly with preservatives vegetable is really good , similar to the one that I used to have in Hong Kong! Great service.:) garlic chicken is also really good to compare ble to some places in Hong Kong:)
Definitely one of the best places in Edmonton to order Chinese food from.
Good chinese. Good food+clean nice place+good prices+good service= Good place to eat
My friend took me there and we had the curry beef brisket. It was delicious and you get a huge serving for $9. I have been back twice since and had the brisket both times. Still my favorite!! But then again I haven't tried any of the other dishes. 2 thumbs up for Buddies!!
Mom and pop establishment. Decent food- and not nearly as greasy as downtown establishments. Service is lacking, but this is the norm at Chinese restaurants.
Go for the traditional dishes. I've strolled by this place a number of times and today I finally made time to go in. I've been told by a number of Chinese friends of mine over the years to look to the clientele of an ethnic restaurant to determine the quality and authenticity of the cuisine. This place checked out just fine.
Ignore the decor and be patient with the service. Our server was brutally sharp and almost rude but efficient while two others in close proximity to our table were incredibly friendly and polite. The tea came out fast and the food wasn't far behind. It was piping hot and clearly fresh. The rice was just okay; the texture was a bit grainy and dry. The spring rolls were lacking; half filled and pretty tasteless. The BBQ duck was succulent and tender and the BBQ Pork Chop Suey was great. Both sauces were delicate and distinct and definitely helped the rice (as they usually do).
My eyes skimmed the crowd and I noted what the rest of the tables were dining on. The Canadian-Chinese cuisine here looks pretty standard and from what I had sampled it was alright. The ethnic dishes however looked superb and from what I tried they were as good as what I've had in Chinatown here as well as the Chinatowns in Toronto and Ottawa. Next time through I'm going to do a bit more research and make sure I'm getting the good stuff.
Take out good.. Can't get into too much more detail besides what's already been said. The take out was really good. Nothing to complain about.
Good, if you know how to order. This resturant has a lot of great authentic dishes with great flavor and ingredients. Do not be deterred from this place because someone ordered chicken fried rice or sweet sour pork here, didn't like it, and wrote a review saying how bad it was. The waiters here are pretty hectic, they do rush to get your order, rush to get you out when you're done and some don't speak english very well; be wary of that. But do not judge this resturant because of these traits since they are trivial compared to the pros it brings. Look around and get recommendations on what to order because the right dishes here is what really makes it. Food always comes out fast, fresh and hot; no problems there. This place fills up pretty quickly at nights and on weekends, so make sure to make reservations. Also, if you ever come here in the morning or for lunch always get the congee (avoid the "lunch specials"). Overall, this place is great; fast service (wether you like it or not), fast bringing orders out, fast paced resturant with authentic food.
tl;dr: get congee in mornings, when ordering dishes get recommendations and look around you, authentic dishes
10/5 Stars.. This place is close to my church. EVERY Sunday after church me and my family order take out, and time to time we dine in.
My reviews are somewhat long, and sometimes odd so I won't say much but:
This place is THE BEST Chinese restaurant ever. I lived in Toronto, Vancouver and in Miami and been to many, many restaurants but this one stands tall well over the rest.
Forget the decor (its perfectly fine but plain)
Forget the service (again its perfectly fine)
The food is amazingly epic and delicious. I been going here almost three to four years, and I ordered basically everything from going with family, friends, or my paintball team.
You.Will.Not.Regret.It!
GREAT MEAL. We ate too much and too fast--that's because the food was delicious! A busy restaurant is always a good sign, and Buddy's was packed and noisy with happy people clearly enjoying their meal. Prices are very reasonable, service was fast and friendly. A definite thumbs-up from us!
Chinese food is chinese food. As far as more authentic type of chinese food goes, this is one of the better ones. alot of times i want real chinese food but dont want to go all the way to china town, well this place is on the southside and it as good as anything you will find in china town.
i have been here multiple times and would visit again.
BIG portions, reasonable prices, family owned.. This is pretty good value. I’ve certainly had much better chinese food at better prices in the US, but in Edmonton, this is a regular stop of mine now.
