This place has been one of my favourites for years, great food, great people, great atmosphere.
Today I was there and they really tipped over the scale with their amazingness!
A gentleman in the booth behind mine had a seizure. His friends were all calm and stated how he has had them and he will be okay.
The wait staff were unbelievably amazing at handling the situation and were wonderful. Everyone was calm and respectful.
AMAZING!
This place is such a gem. Amazing food, kind staff and a huge menu! Can't wait to eat here again!!
Thank-you for everything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Absolute BEST!! Thank you for absolutely everything!
A small store, don't expect the best quality service but for the prices they have their food is good! Stopping by with a friend around 5pm, the restaurant was very empty and only had a couple other customers. We were told to sit wherever we wanted to, and were promptly served water and the menu by our waiter. I ordered their tofu curry noodle while my friend ordered one of their beef pho dishes. The food was good, I chose the dish based on the reviews i read on here about the vegetarian food being good and I tend to agree! It was a pleasant surprise, and I enjoyed my noodles on a chilly Edmonton evening.
However, something I was very disappointed with was the service after being served water. Very often we were left wondering where our server was to take our order, give us our bill, etc. We weren't the only ones in the restaurant wondering since there were others wondering the same thing too who went up to the counter and asked for their bill personally. On top of that, the waiter was new and didn't even know that their specialty menu existed! It was really awkward explaining to him how much my item cost while paying for the bill after he told me that he didn't know how much it cost since he was new. I felt bad for him, but I'm not sure what miscommunication there was when training him as a waiter, either from him or staff. How do you not train your waiters to know half of their menu? That left a poor impression in my mind.
In the end, I feel that it's still a good solid place for affordable pho and noodles on Whyte Ave and near enough to University. I'd come back, but I'd be hoping for better (or at least more experienced) people serving me. Recommended.
After a day of labour, go to Friends and Neighbors. Huge selection of food as it shares a kitchen with the breakfast place next door (you can ask for the menu for next door). The pho is what I usually get. Everything I tried seem to be solid and reliable. Lots of good experiences here
Not too shabby. Friendly staff. Good portions of yummy breakfast grub. Decor is dated.
Classic Diner Experience.. A great place for breakfast, attentive and friendly staff, clean but dated decor. Owned and connected to the Pho place next door you can order from either menu in either restaurant. Simple and reasonable breakfast options... you have to try the homemade ice tea!
I've been coming here since somewhere around 1986 and it's still one of my favorites. Great food, comfy, friendly, and reasonable prices.
Varied and authentic food from several different menus! Very friendly service.
Can't complain!. We came here for breakfast... it was pretty decent. I actually prefer it over Artisan Resto-Cafe, as they actually properly poach their eggs here. The prices are excellent, and I might want to go back to try the pho.
Anyway, if you want a cheap breakfast place, with your standard breakfast items, this place is great! Although it's small, so avoid prime time.
Great atmosphere, great service, extensive menu (hard to decide what to order, everything looks good), delicious large portions. I had the west coast bennie, really great flavour. Will come back for sure, there are more types of bennies to try ;)
Absolutely delicious!! Wasn't sure what to expect from this hole in the wall. Great coffee, great menu. I had a breakfast pita with tomatoes cucumbers bacon onions avocado and a red pepper spread. Amazing taste. Service was great too. I will be returning here :)
Breakfast of Champions. Friends & Neighbours is very reminiscent of a small town diner, homey, and familiar. It's a breakfast, brunch, lunch menu with both american (burgers, and sandwiches) and chinese foods. They do cater to vegetarians and even have a few vegan items. My recommendation would be breakfast. Best french toast out of all of Edmonton, and their vegan and vegetarian options are awesome. Tofu eggs, and tofu bacon will definitely leave you craving more. Great staff, and always makes for a good place to go on a weekend morning.
Great greasy spoon. This cafe is not high class and doesn't have fancy service, but it's a great, chill place to go have food and a coffee. The food has always been great in my experience and there is something for everyone.
To those of you saying that they should move to an "industrial area and not take up space on Whyte Avenue", you should probably go find somewhere else to frequent, and stop complaining.
Whyte ave started as a run down artists area with cool little funky diners all over the place. Yuppies and stuck up folk have taken it over now, and apparently have issues with the things that made it so cool.
calm yourselves.
To everyone else, if you want a relaxed laid back greasy spoon, I highly recommend friends and neighbours.
Long have I searched for Edmonton's best Eggs Benedict, long have I bleed, long have the nights been left sleepless and alone. But now. Now I have found it. And it is this place! This holy land which you could pass in the blink of an eye. Behold Edmonton, for your city may triumph in the utter bliss of Friends and neighbors. 10/10 would bang.
Yumm. I really enjoy their vegetarian options and their Vietnamese coffee is to die for :) The atmosphere is really fun too
Biggest menu ever and best service! The Edmonton bagel is sooo good. Avocados are always fresh! Try The strawberry rhubarb pie if it's available!!!
Very good food! Had the eggs Benedict and it was DELICIOUS! Also enjoyed their Viet coffee. Service was mediocre though, server never even asked me how my meal was.
Seinfeld-esque. Everyone needs a diner like the one in 'Seinfeld.' A diner without pretense. I found one at Friends & Neighbours Cafe. The decor is garishly dated in a fun way, the cinnamon buns are devilishly good, and the omelettes are perfect. Decent (but not spectacular) coffee. It feels a bit like a sideways slide back in time, but in a kitschy and delicious way.
Best breakfast on whyte ave! Great staff gives you the comfort of being at home on the couch while being served delicious diverse food off the HUGE menu. If I move away from Edmonton I'm bringing friends and neighbors with me.
Great menu! Vegetarian friendly, too.. I just went there today with my mother. She had the sizzling mango apple tofu, and I had the sizzling black bean tofu.. both delicious! We then had peanut butter pie made by our server, which was a sweet way to end the meal.
I've been to F&N half a dozen times now, and they've never disappointed me. The service is great and they have a wide menu selection, ranging from meaty or vegetarian breakfasts to sizzling fusion dinners. They serve breakfast all day, which is awesome when you don't want Denny's.
If it's your first time trying it, I'd ignore the negative reviews and give this place a fair chance to judge for yourself! It's a chill and affordable way to spend your breakfast/brunch/lunch or dinner.
Good For Breakfast. Nothing fancy here just plain good diner food. Breakfast is especially good. Good coffee and decent portions. Really enjoyed the eggs benedict.
very speedy service if you are in a rush.
Ignore the negative reviews!!. Totally honest, there isn't much reason not to try this place. It has all day breakfasts, a large menu, and a great Vietnamese section and alternatives. Not once has the food come to me bad; the timing is always good, and the hot food comes hot. They use good ingredients too, such as tasty, TOTALLY NORMAL potatoes for their delicious hash browns. The owners and staff are pleasant people, and are always ready to fix any mistakes. Great for all meals, family/friend get-togethers, and those looking for some greasy food to kill a hangover.
Great Pho & Bun Bo Hue. Good soup broth, good portion size, and good price.
