Shogun Japanese Restaurant has been in the same location as when it opened in 1983. It has one of the oldest pedigrees when it comes to serving Japanese cuisine in Edmonton, including being the first sushi bar in the city. And while I love sushi, we go to Shogun for teppanyaki.
Inside the restaurant you will find several tatami rooms, intimate tables and of course the teppan grills. There is a positive vibe throughout the restaurant.
They offer a full drink menu. We opted for a bottle a bottle of warm Sake to share for the table. The teppanyaki menu is pretty straight forward. The dishes are made with fresh and flavourful ingredients and light seasoning. You can choose from chicken, steak or shrimp, or go for a bigger combo that includes things like sukiyaki beef, lobster and scallops. The meal comes with a myriad of vegetables (i.e.: zucchini, mushrooms, bean sprouts), that are cooked alongside your main dish. It also comes with soup and salad to start, rice and two sauces.
My favourite item on the menu is the 8 oz. Shogun Steak, which is a New York cut that is grilled to perfection. I am also a big fan of the sauces that come with the meal and usually put them on everything.
The average price per person ranges from $25 for basic entrees, to just over $40 for the Shogun specials. Our bill for four people, including a bottle of Sake was about $130, which is very reasonable when compared to other teppanyaki restaurants.
The restaurant is open for lunch on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and daily for dinner until 9:30 on weekdays, 10:30 Friday and Saturday, and 8:30 Sunday. I recommend making a reservation since it is a popular spot for birthdays and other special occasions and usually fills up fast. There is a small parking lot and street parking available but might be limited given the location.
My dad has been taking me to Shogun since I was a young girl. I have a weird attachment to the miso that is always brought to you. This restaurant has never disappointed me. The food has always been fresh and the service prompt. My favourite item from the menu is the spicy tuna maki cone. The most recent time we had a very lovely male server. The only thing that is a little annoying is that to park in the underground parking lot, you can't be driving a tall SUV or truck. You will be too tall for the ceiling down there and have to park on the street. This isn't really a complaint, just a warning.
excellent service, experience and food. Enjoyed the shrimp teppan and fried squid the ginger sauce was a nice touch. overall a great celebratory dinner
Shogun is tucked away just near the end of Jasper Ave and parking can be a little finicky to find. Once inside you will find a long narrow walkway leading to the restaurant itself. It has a pretty big floor plan with lots of private rooms and cozy sections for privacy. Not to mention they also have their live cooking tables for spectating galore.
Anyways to start I ordered salmon sashimi to start, nice generous sized pieces. And some delicious and tender chicken yakitori. All with some green tea to wash down. My girlfriend ordered Chirashi and the assortment of fish/seafood was very nice. The rainbow roll she ordered tasted good, but I felt like it could have been rolled better. Same with our 2 pieces of Toro nigiri, could have been formed better. I really wanted Uni, but they didn't have it. I myself ordered Soba Zaru (comes with assorted tempura). And you get a rather generous serving of Soba. Cooked perfectly along with the tempura. By far the best I've had in a long time at any place. Perfectly cooked tempura, nice and crunchy yet just slightly soft with the veggies. Overall the restaurant is a tad dim which doesn't compliment the dark wood interior but likely I would come back!
Shogun's beef tataki is the best in the city, in my opinion. I've tried it at just about every good Japanese restaurant in Edmonton and nothing comes close! Sushi is quite good also.
Always enjoy coming here for the Beef sashimi. I've tried many diff restaurant's beef sashimi and no where is comparable. The sauce is sooo good. It's still the best in the city.
The salmon sashimi' are fresh and melts in your mouth. Can't get enough. The chicken karage came out fresh and so tender. Not a fan of the sauce that came with it tho.
The yakisoba's (noodles) are not bad. But the sukiyaki beef Don (rice) was really tasty with the soup in it. It tastes exactly like the bugogi soup from wing chicx.
The restaurant isn't as busy as in the past. Prob due to so many Japanese restaurant choices in the city. The beef sashimi is what makes me go back
Found out Tuesdays get 10% off your bill
WOW noodles taste homemade and the fried oysters are NOM NOM NOMM. Explanation needed?
AMAZING! Chef was pleasant and funny, so was the waiter. Very nice and very funny! Food was FANTASTIC!! Overall was a very good experience and would recommend the restaurant to anyone!!
Good lunch. Have been here for lunch once. It seems that they are getting pretty busy at lunch hour so we got there a little earlier. The decoration is good and the staffs are friendly. We all got the lunch box and it was tasty.
Great service, great food, great staff and great value. Truly one of my favourite restaurants! If you haven't tried it you should!
Always enjoy going to Shogun teppan cooking. The steak and shrimp is great. Ask for Buddy he makes the evening fun. My family have been going to Shogun for more then 10 years and always enjoy
Love everything about this restaurant! Great food, great sauces!
Had my valentines dinner here and was slightly disappointed by the variety in fish at first for both the sashimi and sushi. Sushi was somewhat loose and would need more improvement on for sure. But overall it was still quite a good experience, I would definitely give it another shot.
Best Tuna Tataki. I love Japanese food, this place nails it!
They have really good sushi, fresh and tasty. The teppan grill is amazing. They also happen to have the best tuna tetaki in the city based on the huge variety of places I have tried. Go try it!
Amazing!. I love this place. I go here for lunch and usually get the bento box and it is awesome. Cheap and really good. Also did diner here a few time. Food was great and average price. Would love to come back again soon!
Trying to write a review without being biased from all the other negative ones.... I was looking forward to try this place out. But then I saw the abhor reviews and I was like: you can't be serious...
While I didn't pay special attention to the service and the server did everything a server would normally do - it just felt rather... I don't know... rigid and subdue. Those were the nicest words I can find. But, if you have read my reviews, I go for #1. taste #2 good deal? #3 service...
The sashimi was awesome and I normally don't go out of my way to pay full price for it. Glad I did that night. Very fresh, tender, and supple... The soft shell crab maki's were huge, you need at least 3 bites to eat that thing. The Dragon Eye was piping hot and freshly deep fried and that orange mayo sauce really hit the spot. The yakiudon was also a surprise. Yes it tasted saucy and MSG'ey but the noodle was just at the right firmness level. The beef tataki, another dish that I don't really care for, had everything going right for it. The seaweed, ponzu sauce, and green onions married with the beef wonderfully. The beef slice was not too thin but it was not too thick either, you can feel the weight of each slice of beef in your mouth - never chewy and it just melts in your mouth after a few chews.
Last, but not least, the deep fried salmon fish head.... now, most people make fun of how asian restaurants serve cats and frogs and none of it is true except in very specific parts of mainland china, but, this place serves deep fried salmon fish heads... it really isn't all that scary and if you have asian parents that grew up on this stuff, they'll love it! I couldn't really appreciate it myself but it was nice to try.
I don't know if this is a truly authentic Japanese place because the oil does taste a bit "old", or if this is a good determining factor, but this place tastes a lot better than other Japanese restaurants.
I decided to not "rank" my favorite restaurants per se, but my top 5 in Edmonton are:
Kyoto, I Love Sushi, Mikado, Shogun, and Sakana.
Favorite type of jap restaurant. Much better food, service, and price than Jap Village, who messed up on my bday so we showed up here instead no reservation and accomodated quickly!
Yummy!. Shogun did a great job for a friend's birthday party - the service was great, not to mention entertaining. We all laughed the entire time the chefs were preparing our teppanyaki. Everyone enjoyed their entrees, and the atmosphere was fun. I would definitely return!
With one of the oldest pedigrees when it comes to serving Japanese cuisine in Edmonton (in particular being home to the first real full-fledged sushi bar in the city) and still in the same location when it opened back in 1983, Shogun is one of the real classics that has survived the test of time.
